Symetrix Partners with Attero Tech & Stewart Audio to Speed Dante Design

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 2014: In a significant development for users of Audinate’s Dante audio networking technology, Symetrix has announced that the latest version of its popular SymNet Composer software will support native configuration of select Dante-enabled Attero Tech and Stewart Audio products.

Settings affecting I/O levels, routing, and more may be defined with SymNet Composer 2.0, which gives customers the ability to consolidate design on a single software platform where previously multiple platforms were required.

“As of this release, integrators will no longer need Audinate’s Dante Controller as well as separate software packages for each manufacturer’s products,” comments Trent Wagner, senior product manager at Symetrix. “Supported Attero Tech and Stewart Audio Dante-enabled products can now be configured and managed right along side to SymNet hardware. Integrators who have used Composer before will have no learning curve.”

Stewart Audio has long pursued a focus on making networked A/V affordable and practical, and its current range includes innovative Dante end-points. “Our customers desire solutions that are both compatible and complete in their implementations. The collaboration between Stewart Audio, Symetrix and Attero Tech represents a major step in that direction,” says Stewart Audio’s Chief Marketing Officer, Brian McCormick.

He continues, “By collaborating with Symetrix, we are creating outcomes that align with our customer’s expectations. By carefully analyzing and responding to the challenges consultants and integrators face daily, presenting them with the results they are looking for is what this partnership is really all about.”

Mike Sims, director of marketing and sales at Attero Tech – which produces a trio of Dante interfaces – welcomes the partnership as ‘the next logical step’ in the interoperability of Dante networked audio systems. “Our goal has been to make deployment of these systems as seamless as possible, while allowing consultants and integrators to choose best-of-class products from a variety of manufacturers. This is the future of interoperability,” he declares.

The initial response from the integrator community is also encouraging. Chuck Mitchell, owner of California-based Technology of the Arts, recently undertook a Dante-centric installation involving Symetrix and Attero Tech products. “Dante is rapidly becoming a default choice for all manner of projects in the installed environment,” he says. “The Dante-centric partnership between Symetrix, Attero Tech and Stewart Audio is to be warmly welcomed as it helps to bring every installer’s dream of blanket interoperability that much closer to realization.”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.

Giant Pirates Entertainment Speeds Post-Production of Reality TV Series With Forscene

LONDON — June 11, 2014 – Forbidden Technologies plc (AIM:FBT), the AIM-quoted owner and developer of the market-leading cloud video platform Forscene, announced that Culver City, California-based production company Giant Pirates Entertainment has adopted Forscene into its post-production workflow in order to hasten editing of “The Feed,” a new reality-based television series that will air on the FYI network (formerly Bio). Forscene gives Giant Pirates the ability to start editing field packages immediately via the cloud rather than having to wait for hard drives to ship across the country, eliminating lag time that could throw the multi-site production off schedule.

The production required footage from New York field recordings to be sent to Los Angeles for very quick turnarounds as edited packages for use in studio shoots. Forscene enabled Giant Pirates’ post-production teams to view footage and start creating sequences in Los Angeles within hours of the shoot in New York, helping to keep the production running efficiently.

“Having the ability to work with footage via Forscene so soon after it has been shot is a new and welcome experience for our post team,” said Tracy Tong, supervising producer on “The Feed.” “When QSR Systems, our Avid vendor and rental company for this production, recommended Forscene, we were wary. We had never used any kind of cloud-based workflow before, so we had some concerns about compatibility with the Avid codec, upload times, and ease of use. It turns out we had no reason to worry.”

“Forscene’s cloud-based technology has shortened the cycle from acquisition to post dramatically,” said Rob Cloyd, president of QSR Systems. “In our fast-paced business where production cycles are shortened, Forscene’s technology has delivered.”

“Forscene has saved us the significant time and complexity involved in getting footage across the country to our team, which has made for an incredibly efficient and timely workflow,” added Ross Jacobson, Giant Pirates co-founder.

Forscene allows Giant Pirates’ Los Angeles editors to view footage within hours of the media cards being handed to the New York assistant editor. As soon as the media is saved to Giant Pirate’s media drives, a proxy copy is automatically created and uploaded to the Forscene cloud. At that point, the story team in Los Angeles can watch, log, and string out the footage — days before the shipped media can be ingested and grouped in the Los Angeles post-production offices. Once the story timelines are completed in Forscene, the sequences can be exported and are relinked to the original source for the editors to begin working in Avid.

In terms of ease of use, Giant Pirates users had no problems learning to tap into all of the Forscene functions. “Anyone with a general understanding of Avid or Final Cut can quickly learn how to work with Forscene. Even someone with no experience on Avid could easily pick it up with a quick half-hour training session, or by watching the Forscene YouTube videos,” Tong said. “Forbidden and QSR technical support were nothing short of amazing throughout the process. It was a nice touch to have a support chat built into the program for our AEs and producers if they couldn’t figure something out.”

“With short shooting schedules and the need for carefully packaged stories that convey a sense of things happening in real time, reality TV shows are perfect candidates for Forscene,” said Greg Hirst, business development director, Forbidden Technologies plc. “With Forscene, they now have a new weapon in their arsenal for undertaking these challenging productions.”

Bexel Takes Univision from Burbank to Brazil for 2014 FIFA World Cup

Company Delivers Complete Broadcast Backbone for Network’s Extensive Coverage from Rio de Janeiro

BURBANK, Calif. - Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group's Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, is furnishing a complete production environment for Univision's broadcast of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil(tm). Faced with the largest remote production the network has ever undertaken, Univision turned to Bexel to design the system being used in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To ensure that everything will work seamlessly for the month-long summer event, a senior team of engineers, IT experts, and senior executives travelled from Univision's Miami, Fla., headquarters to Burbank, Calif., to collaborate closely on the process with the team from Bexel.

Bexel began having weekly meetings in November of last year with Univision to review floor plans and technical requirements. Intensive workflow meetings were also held with Univision's production, media management and editing teams, so that Bexel could glean from the different stakeholders what their specific needs were. "Univision had an initial concept of what would be needed for this project," noted Johnny Pastor, director of Technical Services for Bexel. "We then provided our expertise and worked with their teams to help the system evolve and get even stronger. We were with them step by step, ready and willing to accommodate any last minute changes along the way."

From the beginning of the project, it was determined that Bexel would build out the studio at their headquarters in Burbank, break it down, crate it using their proprietary inventory and shipping system, transport it to Brazil via boat, and finally rebuild it on-site in Rio de Janeiro. The window of timing for the project was incredibly tight. Once the cases were removed from the ship, they had to clear Brazilian customs. Then there was just two weeks to reassemble the system, followed by two weeks of rehearsal time before live programming begins.

Collaboratively, a plan was developed for Univision to deploy 18 people from Miami to Burbank in the weeks leading up to the ship date. "The plan of testing the system in Burbank together, before it was shipped, allowed for a lot of preconfiguring," explained Pastor. "It let Univision actually simulate a live-production scenario, using one control room, the editing systems, and the EVS. This was not only cost effective, but it will save Univision a great deal of time in Rio. And time was a critical factor in this project.

"Univision's Enterprise IT Group was also with us in Burbank, setting up connectivity back to Miami. They were able to send files back and forth, confirming the system was operational. All they had to do in Brazil was re-establish the communication and the workflows, and the collaborative environment began again."

Bexel sent approximately 15 engineers to Brazil to reassemble the Univision system. Six members of the Bexel technical team are staying on for the entire run of the World Cup to provide 24/7 coverage and support. The Bexel-designed system consists of two large control rooms with Grass Valley 4 M/E Kayenne switchers and Calrec audio consoles. The file-based workflow consists of 11 Avid editing systems, four EVS XT3s for playback and instant replay, and a robust graphics system including augmented reality. Bexel is also providing Sony HDC-2500 cameras complete with a camera stabilization system and jib for their studio at the IBC.

Univision, which holds the Spanish-language broadcast rights for the event in the U.S. market, plans extensive coverage from Rio de Janeiro in addition to the actual World Cup matches. Univision Sports built a set from which they'll broadcast pre- and post-game coverage, and Univision Entertainment will be broadcasting its morning show, Despierta América, from Copacabana Beach as well as a show for Televisa Deportes from the rooftop of the Atlantico Sul Hotel. In addition, Univision will use two of their flypack systems to shadow Team Mexico and Team USA. The Bexel setup will serve as the hub supporting all of these activities. From the remote setups, everything will come back through the Bexel backbone and then go out to Miami via a fiber uplink and satellite. From there it will be broadcast from Univision master control.

"We wanted to design a production environment for Univision that will have the flexibility to deliver everything they need, yet still have easily recognizable equipment, so their staff can walk in and know exactly what to do and how to use the systems," concluded Pastor. "We relied on our many years of live broadcast experience for large events to deliver the systems necessary for this project. We have really enjoyed working with the team from Univision, and it was an honor to have them out here working with us on site."

In addition to Bexel's work with Univision, Vitec brands supporting various other 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil broadcasts, include Anton/Bauer batteries and chargers, artemis camera stabilization systems and operators, Autoscript teleprompters, Litepanel's LED lights, Sachtler V18 and V20 fluid heads, Vinten Osprey pedestals, Vinten Vector 75 and 750 pan-and-tilt heads, and a Vinten Radamec remote pan and tilt head.

Barix and DMD2 Team for In-Store Radio at Bucherer Retail Stores

Custom solution reliably streams branded content to more than 30 stores in central Europe

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, June 10, 2014 — Leading corporate music provider DMD2 of Switzerland has long trusted Barix IP audio solutions to stream branded audio content to businesses around Europe. The company has again selected Barix for multipoint in-store radio, streaming high-quality custom music programs to 33 Bucherer retail jewelry stores in four countries.

Bucherer was founded in Lucerne Switzerland in 1888, and is today the European retail leader for luxury watches and fine jewelry. The Barix installation marks the first time Bucherer has used a live in-store radio service, with DMD2 crafting a specially branded music stream from a huge music library to match specifically the vibrant and elegant atmosphere of their stores. The service gives the retail chain a high-quality audio program, producing a pleasant and consistent audio experience for customers. The service is now live in stores across Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria.

The Barix IP-based delivery architecture also keeps employees focused on customer service instead of fumbling with CDs and the FM radio dial, removing the role of “in-store DJ” from the sales team’s job description.

“Bucherer have gained exceptional control over this part of their in-store branding with the Barix and DMD2 solution,” said Alexander Dal Farra, owner and president of DMD2. “They are very happy with their choice. The Barix solution also ensures that their existing audio equipment could be used for an overall cost-effective installation. Additionally, the audio service is virtually maintenance free once it is up and running.”

The technical concept of the Barix and DMD2 solution was equally appealing to Bucherer. The solution provides a low-latency, bandwidth-efficient live stream over the retail chain’s existing network, requiring no major updates at the store level. The streams originate from the DMD2 offices in Bern, Switzerland, with direct connection to Barix Exstreamer IP audio decoders inside the stores. The Exstreamers reliably play out AAC+ streams at a bitrate ideal for background music.

The Exstreamer models selected for this installation feature a front-panel display with artist/title and stream information, as well as MicroSD slot with backup music in the event of network failure. That MicroSD slot additionally provides built-in content protection, eliminating the temptation for customers or employees to remove attached USB sticks with DMD2 in-store content. Set up is simple and efficient, and virtually no physical space is required due to the Exstreamer’s compact footprint.

Dal Farra adds that his success with Barix across similar in-store radio installations, including Victorinox retail stores in four countries, gave Bucherer the confidence they needed to modernize their in-store music approach. DMD2 handles all Barix device configuration, service monitoring and music licensing for its in-store radio customers, further simplifying matters for retail customers like Bucherer.

“DMD2 has installed well over 1000 Barix Exstreamers across many businesses, each of which have varying network conditions,” said Dal Farra. “That track record of success made it easy to convince Bucherer that it was smart to build their service on this technology.”

Award-Winning Innovations Move Company Atop Projector Industry Rankings

COSTA MESA, Calif. — June 9, 2014 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of visual display solutions, today announced that the company has become the No. 1-selling DLP(R) (Digital Light Processing) projector brand in North America(1) according to the latest Quarterly Projector Shipment and Forecast Report from PMA Research.
