Event Pro, Inc. Ups The Ante With Second Yamaha CL5

Event Pro CL5 Nbr 2

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The response to their first Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console has been tremendous, so Event Pro, Inc. (Hastings, MN), recently made the decision to purchase a second through Metro Sound & Lighting (St. Paul, MN). Event Pro company owner, Neal Wallace, sights high demand, sound quality, and great support from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, as key reasons for the purchase. Event Pro, Inc. is no stranger to Yamaha having an array of the company’s consoles in its stable.

“The ‘two is better than one’ theory holds true when it comes to the CL5, states Wallace. Having the ability to offer this console to our corporate clients, regional festivals and touring acts, and national acts that come through Minnesota is a huge plus. The CL5s have helped take Event Pro, Inc. to another level.” Wallace said his techs love the CL5 consoles so much that they want to take them out on all of their Event Pro gigs. “They LOVE the SOUND and ease of operation.”

After Event Pro’s first CL purchase, the renowned Minneapolis Orchestra Hall immediately requested the CL5. “Joel Money (Technical Director) told me he wanted absolute top-quality audio for clients and technicians to operate on, and the CL provides that platform.” The Hall has, for some time, had a Yamaha PM5D at the FOH location.

The renowned Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis also uses Event Pro CL consoles upon requests from touring artist engineers, such as Paul Booth (engineer for singer Diane Reeves), and others. The club’s tech director, Craig Eichorn is also involved in Twin Cities Jazz Festival so Event Pro has been fortunate to supply the CL. “As we put our second CL console out on as many summer festivals as possible, and with guest engineers experiencing it, they know they can get a CL from us whenever they return to local venues. Many are carrying USB sticks now which makes supplying a CL a natural.”

An event or corporate budget may not support a CL5 but Wallace says if their clients are looking for great sound, they know they will be happy with the console. “100% of the guest engineers, who use it, love it. And for us, personally, it is the best sounding console in its price range.”

Providing their clients with better sound and a better desk is Event Pro’s ultimate goal. “Of course, Wallace notes, the small size, using less space, less road cases, the on-board Premium Effects, and the pre-amps doesn’t hurt either. The Yamaha Rio input/output box, cat5 cabling, networking system, means for us we can leave the three road cases housing our analog 300 ft. splitter snake off the truck (and, that’s a lot of truck space).

Many of the Event Pro rentals include a split mix/two console shows, and setting up dual CL5s with the Rio boxes is easy. “We use a Duracat cat6E cable, and running that co-ax from the CL consoles to the Rio is a breeze. Stagehands love us for this, especially when flying the cat5 instead of a 2-inch snake.”

Event Pro techs are always exploring networking interface possibilities with other gear like Shure wireless microphones, etc, so the Dante/Rio platform is coming in handy. The company currently has two Rio units totaling 48×24 and often split up the units bringing the 16×8 box to front of house in corporate situations that demand more inputs at that position. Eventually, they would like to have two 48-input systems. With the iPad StageMix App for the CL, the company also sends out a top- level Asus router with the console to support the application.

Wallace said he has even established a good networking relationship among Yamaha CL owners in his area so they can quickly supply any artist, venue, or tour with CL consoles anywhere. “Yes, Event Pro wants these desks to always be out, so they are going to work very hard! Sonically, the desk sounds great, and makes the PA sound better. It’s that simple.”

Martin Audio Offers EASE Sound Design Support For MLA

EASE mlm_test_6300_d2_bal
Martin Audio has announced support for installers and sound designers with the provision of specific GLL files for designs using MLA, MLA Compact or MLA Mini in an EASE model.

Andy Davies, head of the Product Support Group for Martin Audio said, “The increasing demand for Multi-cellular technology in an installation environment has driven this development as an initial in-house solution; however, we are also working towards making this a simple addition to future iterations of our free-to-own Display software.”

For the time being, in order for Martin Audio to supply a GLL file all that is required is an EASE ‘packed’ project file of the venue showing the array location points, together with the appropriate Display2 file for the venue. Davies continues, “We can then extract the necessary data from the Display2 file and, via additional software, generate the specific GLL; this will include the inter-cabinet and array tilt angles, together with all the associated filter coefficients generated within Display2 to meet the set objective targets. It will also incorporate the appropriate Case Data for a visual representation of the proposed array within the EASE model.”

The GLL will then be inserted into the EASE model at the predefined location points and the coverage prediction checked to coincide with the Display2 output. The EASE model will then be ‘packed’ and returned to the installer or designer. Should any anomalies in coverage be discovered, or any circumstances arise where it is felt that improvements to the overall performance of the system could be achieved, then this will be advised when returning the EASE project.

EASE mlm_test_6300_ease_bal

All three MLA models have seen success in permanent installs, from nightclubs, such as the Marquee in Sydney Australia, to theaters like Bochum’s Stadionring in Germany, or auditoriums such as George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, to houses of worship like Redemption Church in Arizona and IDC Church in Chicago, USA. The success has been driven not just from the musicality of the systems, but their ability to better control SPL profile, smoothness of coverage, and provide ‘Hard Avoid’ on stage or problem surfaces.

Summing up, Davies said, “By providing additional support to installers and sound designers we hope it will be possible for them to win more contracts and to further showcase the benefits of our MLA technology.”

Hairel Enterprises Picks Vista Systems’ Spyder for Video Projection System in Faith Bible’s New Sanctuary

Spyder X20 Front Transparent LgWhen Faith Bible Church, a Bible-centered church in The Woodlands, Texas, built a new 900-seat sanctuary, Houston-area AV contractor Hairel Enterprises selected a Vista Systems Spyder X20 0808 as a key component of the new video projection system.

Faith Bible marks the first use of a Vista Spyder by Hairel, which provided full AV and theatrical lighting for the sanctuary. “I knew about Spyder and got in touch with Vista because I thought it would be a perfect fit for this installation,” says systems designer Bruce Simmons. “My cold call to Vista turned into a four-hour conversation. They arranged for a demo, and the church was elated by what they saw.” The video projection system will be operational in late January 2015.

The new sanctuary has a raised platform area at its center. A motorized 25×9-foot screen drops down from the ceiling for use in worship services and special events and productions. Two additional 16×9-foot screens flank the center screen and are permanently affixed to the walls. A two-projector center edge blend and the two outer single-projector images are accomplished with four Barco RLMW8 projectors and a Spyder X20 with 8 inputs and 8 outputs.

“Spyder acts as the worship video switcher,” says Simmons. “It’s integrated with a PC-based still server, which is loaded with background images and rack mounted with Spyder. Spyder controls it pulling up images as needed.”

Two Macintosh computers loaded with Pro Presenter are also sources: one for song lyrics and Bible verses, which are keyed onto the backgrounds, and one for moving video playback. Live cameras for IMAG also feed the system. Faith Bible expects to add environmental projection capabilities, too, enabling the walls and sanctuary architecture to become canvases for still images and video.

“With Spyder the entire video output is treated as one pixel space to give the ability to create a much larger visual impact,” Simmons says. “Spyder can blend the two environmental projectors the church will likely add with the other projectors to create one big image, if desired.”

Spyder also allows Faith Bible to scale productions from the complex to the simple. “The church has a very skilled technical staff, so they are comfortable with a really sophisticated technical system, but they also have the ability to dial things down to a one-operator show for weddings or funerals,” Simmons explains. “That means Spyder can handle completely different services and events week to week.”

He notes that, “very sophisticated technology typically means a system that’s difficult to use. But that’s not true with Spyder. We were able to train Faith Bible’s volunteers on Spyder in just a few hours.”

Simmons reports that, “Vista Systems has been extremely helpful all along the way” of the design and install process. “Spyder is a great product. I recommend it to anyone who wants the best possible video presentation system.”

Russell Hartsfield handled client relations for Hairel Enterprises for the project.
