AGCO Corp. Chooses Christie 4K Projectors for 3D Virtual Reality Powerwall

Agricultural machinery leader AGCO Corporation is using Christie® 4K high frame rate (HFR) projection to light up its 3D virtual reality powerwall at its engineering facilities in Jackson, Minnesota. AGCO installed a Christie-powered virtual reality system at its FENDT Research and Development facility in Germany and, impressed with the system’s results and utility, decided to expand its program to North America. The new powerwall in Jackson utilizes two Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® 4K projectors

The Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® projector features full 4K resolution and 35,000 center lumens running at a high frame rate of 60Hz.

running at 60Hz, with TechViz’ 3D visualization software technology and ART tracking system, to display images of agricultural machine models in stereoscopic 3D onto an 8-feet by 16-feet glass screen. Christie performed the site survey and full design, as well as the integration and installation, providing a “one-stop shopping” solution.

One of the largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery in the world, AGCO is committed to investing in state-of-the-art visualization technology to aid in design and development of farming equipment at its facilities. Using TechViz visualization software brought to life by Christie’s high performance projectors, AGCO engineers can view virtual prototypes of the machines on the wall during the design and development process. This allows them to visualize site lines inside and outside the cabs, take off the hood, analyze HVAC airflow, and carry out overall reviews of the machines. Eventually, they’ll use full automations of running machines to see how they respond to different surfaces and textures.

Improving Product Quality, Reducing Costs, and Encouraging Collaboration
The core functions of the system are to achieve optimal product quality and reduce costs by streamlining product development. AGCO also plans to use the powerwall for manufacturing and assembly training purposes, as well as servicing and marketing, attesting to the versatility and value of the solution.

“The powerwall has become an incredibly instrumental and useful part of our engineering process,” said Joseph Black, senior business analyst, AGCO Corporation. “By reviewing the models virtually we are able to catch interferences, perform clearance checks and fix engineering designs ahead of prototyping, allowing us to create fewer prototypes before the final product is ready. Ultimately, we hope the powerwall will not only help us reduce costs, but build the best farming equipment possible.” The TechViz XL software enables the display of virtual prototypes in real time without data conversion, and the use of a wide range of applications.

AGCO’s new powerwall has also succeeded in encouraging collaboration among employees and divisions by supporting communication through visual presentation. In addition to the individual operating the wall, 3D glasses are available for all of the observers in the room. This allows teams to gather and perform group analysis and work together on innovative new ideas. The powerwall screen, made up of a single sheet of durable glass, provides a much clearer image as compared to soft white screens.

Christie Technology and Service Get the Job Done
“3D visualization technology has proven to be an instrumental tool for engineers and developers, as it allows concepts and designs to be viewed and analyzed like never before. For AGCO, it’s critical for the virtual image to be as representative as possible, optimizing their ability to detect and correct any potential design concerns long before production release,” said Jennifer Smith, executive vice president, Global Market Solutions, Christie. “Offering the highest resolution, highest brightness and highest quality image and video displays available today, the Christie D4K3560 projector is the perfect solution. AGCO can be confident that the powerwall is delivering ultra-realistic images to ensure every detail of the object being displayed can be viewed clearly.”

The Christie D4K3560 3-Chip DLP® projector features full 4K resolution and 35,000 center lumens running at a high frame rate of 60Hz. Built on the Christie TruLife™ electronics platform, it delivers superior brightness, smoother video, and vibrant, life-like images.

“We were so impressed with the Christie D4K35 projectors, running at 30Hz used for the FENDT powerwall in Germany, that when it came time to install the system in Jackson, Christie was once again the clear choice. But with the projectors running at the higher frame rate of 60Hz, we can produce an even better image — a feat that we didn’t think was possible. The visuals look absolutely stunning,” added Black. “The Christie service team did it all for us – not just the overall design, floor plan, and configuration of the powerwall, but also the complete installation.”

Getting crowds closer to the action of ‘Le Tour de France’

Calibre LEDView scalers power big screens for Yorkshire’s fabulous ‘Grand Depart’

While more than 5 million fans lined the roads of Yorkshire for the opening weekend of the 2014 Tour de France, relatively few got close to the action itself. For those who could not, help was at hand in the form of large LED screens powered by LEDView image-scaling technology from Calibre UK.

The key screens were supplied by two companies – Lightmedia and Big TV – both of which specified Calibre’s LEDView530 as their large-display image scaler of choice for the Grand Depart.

Lightmedia supplied 19 LED screens along the route of the two opening stages from Leeds to Harrogate and from York to Sheffield, with many of them acting as the visual centrepiece for official Tour de France fan parks.

Eddie Elliot-Smith, Managing Director at Lightmedia, comments: “We use the Calibre LEDView530s as a key part of our rental-and-staging operation, to scale live broadcast content from TV cameras around the course for display on each and every one of the LED screens we supplied.

“We use Calibre because, quite simply, they are the most reliable solution in the world. Not only have we used them for this year’s Grand Depart, we also relied on them for other high-profile international events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the wedding of Charles and Camilla, the launch of Xbox ONE and, indeed, Calibre’s previous generation of product at the Tour de France the last time it came to Britain in 2007.”

A high-quality LED-optimised scaler-switcher and universal interface for LED screens, the LEDView530 provides best-in-class professional image processing in a compact, affordable 1U format. It features a jog-wheel and LCD display on its for front panel for fast and easy set-up in the field, and boasts a plethora of useful features including colour adjustment of all source types, powerful picture resizing with simple pixel-accurate edge drag-and-drop, and superior scaling, de-interlacing and noise reduction to reduce image flicker and artefacts.

For mixed rental fleet use the scaler also has a Projection mode in which it supports warp mapping and edge blending, as well as geometry correction and general projection scaling functionality as well as a Scaler-Switcher mode for general purpose scaling and scan conversion making it a truly universal device. The LEDView530 also boasts genlock and I/O lock, making it suitable for on-stage or in-camera use at live events.

Pauline Brooksbank, MD at Calibre UK

Pauline Brooksbank, Managing Director, Calibre UK, comments: “As a Yorkshire company ourselves, we were delighted and extremely proud to have supplied LEDView530 units to power so many LED screens along the route of our county’s “Grand Depart”. This unforgettable weekend was not just a celebration of cycling but a unique opportunity for local people to experience a sporting event they had never come so close to before.

“The crowds who lined the route were 20-deep in places but, thanks to Calibre’s Yorkshire-manufactured technology’s ability to take live broadcast feeds and process them for large-screen display simply, reliably and with absolutely no sacrifice in quality, everybody felt that they were part of the action.”

Suburban Community Channels Serves Local Viewers with Tightrope Media Systems

New master control center, production truck benefit from multichannel scheduling and playout, slo-mo instant sports replay

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, July 10, 2014 — Many Community TV broadcasters across the United States rely on Tightrope Media Systems to simplify multichannel scheduling and playout, but one Minneapolis-area broadcaster is leveraging the full Tightrope portfolio to establish meaningful community connections beyond master control.

Suburban Community Channels has been the Community TV and media resource connection for the northeast Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs for more than 30 years, delivering 17 physical channels from its facility. As the local cable franchise authority for Comcast, the PEG broadcaster delivers eight channels of programming across 12 municipalities, including discrete government channels for each community. Suburban Community Channels populates its remaining channels with a variety of imported and locally produced content, the latter of which includes live broadcasts of high school sports.

Suburban Community Channels relies on solutions across Tightrope’s portfolio to manage all content. In master control, Tightrope Cablecast server and automation solutions cost-efficiently deliver high-quality programming to Comcast viewers, simultaneously serving on-demand content to online viewers. Cablecast has played a significant role for the core master control operation, cost-efficiently transitioning Suburban Community Channels from analog to SDI digital while establishing an HD-ready future. On July 16, “On Location TV19” will become the first channel in the cluster to transition to HD.

“It was clear we needed to rebuild master control from the day I was hired,” said Michael Simonds, technical lead for Suburban Community Channels. “We had a 25-year old system based on old analog composite video equipment and relay machine control, along with a massively sized router and automation system. Cablecast quickly and cleanly transitioned us to a digital environment while introducing a large number of operational efficiencies—not to mention returning real estate to our master control center. Tightrope clearly has the community media market in mind for product development, and understands the challenges we face.”

Many of the new operational efficiencies are tied to centralized workflows. Operators can connect to the central Cablecast server from any location with web access, and schedule programming weeks in advance; or make scheduling changes on the fly. Cablecast also allows Suburban Community Channels to quickly add new channels and applications, the most recent of which was a video-on-demand service that offers city council meetings on the website of its member municipalities.

Additionally, Tightrope Carousel digital signage solutions support transitional broadcast feeds, including bulletin boards between programs. The Carousel systems also deliver a bright and lively mix of rotating informational programming for visitors and employees inside its lobby areas, providing an additional public-facing benefit for establishing community connections.

On board its production truck, the broadcaster uses a Tightrope ZEPLAY solution for slo-mo instant replay of highlights from varsity football and other local high school sporting events. ZEPLAY allows production personnel to quickly trigger exciting replays and build highlight packages for viewers who follow local high school sports at home. Adding ZEPLAY to the infrastructure allows the production staff to operate across the workflow with more freedom by eliminating the more labor-intensive replay processes of the past.

“Tightrope makes their equipment very accessible, with no special software or training required to learn their products. The user experience is really much better than competitive products, and that is especially true of ZEPLAY,” said Simonds. “For live sports production, having four inputs and four outputs means that our operators don’t need to do any more intensive switching. We’re no longer doing the old school method of following the puck or the ball and switching angles in real-time. The ZEPLAY records every angle, and we can assemble what we need to enhance our sports programming. It has simplified our live productions dramatically—just as Cablecast has simplified our master control operations.”

StrandVision Digital Signage Enhances Viewers’ Experiences with Signage Content Trivia Facts and Questions

Extends pre-packaged digital signage content offerings that include news, weather, background music…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – June 25, 2014 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced that it is adding a new, no-cost, trivia library to its electronic signage offerings. The trivia is organized by topics, such as sports, food, animals, plants, hobbies – scores of different categories – and randomly presented as either “factoid” statements and/or trivia questions.

“We’re offering hundreds of prepared trivia questions and factoids to help make the wait worthwhile for viewers of our customers’ StrandVision Digital Signage networks,” commented Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “These little mind game diversions engage viewers, draw the StrandVision Digital Signage presentations into conversations of waiting customers or employees and enhance overall message delivery.”

Factoid or Trivia

StrandVision customers can add trivia pages to their electronic signage mix with a few clicks. Administrators simply select the presentation format and topics to display and StrandVision cloud servers handle the rest. The trivia is presented as either a statement or as a multiple choice question that offers the answers and then, every few seconds, removes one of the incorrect answers until only the correct response is ultimately displayed. The trivia pages are interspersed with the regular signage content according to an administrator-defined frequency. Topics and formats can easily be added or changed at any time.

*The correct answer is C.

This free digital signage trivia feature joins a number of StrandVision-provided content streams that add to the digital signage viewing experience. Other content streams include: background music, famous artwork, news and weather with radar, as well as industry-specific feeds, such as banking videos. StrandVision Digital Signage also accepts and processes customer-specified Web pages and RSS feeds to offer virtually unlimited information sources.

“We’re having fun with this one by learning lots of new random things to babble about at the retirement home. We’re sure that our subscribers and their viewers will enjoy it too – although they stand the risk of being the know-it-all at cocktail parties,” joked Strand.

The no-cost trivia pages are available immediately to StrandVision subscribers. The feature has been added as a new page type in the “Modify Pages” section of their Content Management System (CMS) portal.
