Shaping a Better World: Arup Deploys Pexip Globally

Large-scale enterprise-wide videoconferencing connects professionals

Independent professional services firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, Arup have deployed the Pexip® Infinity scalable software platform worldwide. The deployment will enable Arup’s 11,000 staff across 38 countries to use high definition video, voice and data collaboration and will also be used to connect to Arup’s clients.

“In Arup, we aim to introduce new, forward thinking, innovative and simple to operate technologies into our business. The deployment of Pexip Infinity will not only reinvent how our company communicates internally but will also change how we communicate with our external clients,” explained Roy Salfarlie, Head of AV, UKMEA AV Media Services at Arup.

Simen Teigre, CEO at Pexip said: “The way in which Arup have deployed our technology is testament to the simplified, interoperable and virtualized way in which our Infinity software helps people to collaborate. We look forward to enjoying a partnership with Arup for many years to come.”

Pexip ensures simplicity meets functionality

“Initially, within our proof of concept for next generation virtual meeting rooms, we were evaluating bridging solutions from three different vendors. However, we found these to be more complex than needed – they also required proprietary hardware and could not achieve satisfactory interoperability and HD video integration with Microsoft® Lync. Pexip Infinity was brought in through a revised vendor list. It met our requirements for a software-only solution and we had it working globally in less than two hours. We were really impressed,” explained Chris Ellen, Unified Messaging Team Lead at Arup.

Arup were traditionally using Cisco Jabber™ but wanted to extend their mobile video portfolio by introducing Microsoft Lync. “Using Pexip Infinity means you can dial in and use the same PC or device for a video call but at increased quality. We don’t have to license additional software clients either which is an attractive value proposition,” explained Ellen.

Video conferencing for today and beyond

Arup staff are issued with a personal Virtual Meeting Room with a PIN number for security. Individual users can control their conferences and view presentations from their own mobile phone or tablet.

“Our existing video infrastructure was physically restricted by the number of hardware boxes in our network. With Pexip Infinity, there’s no restriction on the number of people that can use the system. The platform is always on and always available, which enables the team to connect instantly whenever collaboration is required in their workflow,” said Ellen.

“Unlike traditional DSP-based MCU’s, Pexip’s conferencing nodes are virtual machines that can sit on either a VMware® or Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure making use of standard server architecture. For Arup, minimal to no investment is required to start deploying the solution as we can utilize existing infrastructure. Being virtual also means conferencing capacity can be increased within minutes and the platform is inherently redundant.”

Arup intend to extend the solution to incorporate client meetings. “We can now use the Pexip WebRTC functionality for external meeting participants. In the past we had to ship a copy of Cisco Jabber™ and provision a user account. This was cumbersome for everyone involved, it introduced a delay and had a cost attached to it. With Pexip Infinity we now just email a URL and external callers can experience professional quality video via their web browser,” explained Ellen.

“As an early adopter of Infinity, we have been involved in beta testing and providing feedback directly to the Pexip development team. The openness we enjoy with Pexip is refreshing and it helps us to plan for the future. Pexip Infinity is a good strategic fit for Arup.”

InfoComm International Teams With AMX Europe to Train 75 AV Networking Pros

Nine Discounted Sessions of InfoComm’s Networked AV Systems Class to be offered

InfoComm International is collaborating with AMX Europe to provide networked audiovisual systems training to AV professionals. At least 75 students will be able to take InfoComm’s highly regarded Networked AV Systems class at a discounted rate in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, dramatically raising the number of trained professionals in the region.

The three-day classes will be offered nine times in AMX Training Centres, and will cost €400/£350+VAT for members, €800/£650+VAT, for non-members.

“The AV world has evolved and if you lack knowledge of IT networks you are creating obstacles to your success,” said David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International. “AV systems increasingly use enterprise IP networks — the same networks that already carry mission-critical voice, data and other information. These networks were never designed with real-time delivery of audiovisual content in mind. Without an in-depth understanding of IP networks and the way AV applications operate within them, customer expectations may not be met. And improperly configured AV devices can create catastrophic network problems. InfoComm thanks AMX for their strong commitment to this program and industry quality.”

”AV and IT convergence is moving ever closer and a lack of Networking and IT knowledge can be a major stumbling block to achieving successful AV installations today,” added Graeme Scott, European Training Manager, AMX Europe. “AMX is committed to empowering its customers with information and training that will keep them ahead of the game. We are delighted to be collaborating with InfoComm to deliver the Networked AV Systems training across Europe. InfoComm believes in promoting knowledge and quality throughout the industry; beliefs that AMX also holds very dear.”

The Networked AV Systems course is built around real-world applications that clients want today, and the way AV and IT technologies must be coordinated to create the best experience. The course follows the process of matching AV and networking technologies to customer needs for digital signage, conferencing, remote monitoring and management, and networked AV security. It goes through the planning for three fictional companies, each with its unique requirements.

Students will learn how to glean customer needs, manage trade-offs between quality and bandwidth, and work through the sometimes conflicting needs of customers and network managers. In the end, through better coordination among clients, IT professionals, and AV designers, network-based AV systems can deliver the kind of communication experience that benefits everyone.

Because many will need more basic education before endeavoring into Networked AV Systems, InfoComm’s Networking Technology Online class, which conveys foundational knowledge, will be a perquisite for enrollment. AMX is generously covering the cost of this class for all who enroll in the Networked AV Systems sessions at their centers. Classes will be offered as follows: 3 – 5 March, London; 6 – 8 March, Netherlands; 10 – 12 March, Sweden; 21 – 23 July, London or York; 24 – 26 July, Belgium; 28 – 30 July, Paris; 13 – 15 October, London; 16 – 18 October, TBD; and 20 – 22 October, Germany.

To register visit InfoComm’s online store at infocomm.org. For direct assistance with UK classes contact InfoComm UK Account Manager Ben Barnard at bbarnard@infocomm.org. For questions about European classes outside of the UK, contact InfoComm Regional Director Godwin Demicoli at gdemicoli@infocomm.org.

HPA Tech Retreat Celebrates 20 Years of Inquiry and Illumination

Industry Thought Leaders and Technology Mavens Head Back to Palm Springs for Thoughtful Exploration of an Industry in Transition

(Los Angeles, CA) For the past twenty years, the Hollywood Post Alliance(r) (HPA) Tech Retreat(r) has gathered a veritable who’s who in engineering, technology, creativity, and strategic business together for a structured yet informal meeting of the minds; where top industry leaders engaged in all aspects of production, distribution, post production, film, television, web and related endeavors, gather in an environment conducive to the exchange of knowledge and information. This year’s 20th Anniversary confab promises all of that and more from February 17-21, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells near Palm Springs, CA.

The Tech Retreat offers attendees the chance to explore the opportunities and the complexities facing an industry in transition, and to investigate new solutions and technologies that impact its many constituents.

The HPA Tech Retreat offers lively conference sessions, networking events and technology demonstrations to an engaged audience of participants and panelists that hail from a pool of the top technical, creative, business and hands-on experts. Topics will take the Tech Retreat audience from the nitty gritty to the very precipice.

For a full schedule, visit http://bit.ly/1cwt7B2. On Monday, February 17th, the event opens for early registration and a pre-Retreat course titled Physics, Psychophysics, and Vision for Advanced Motion Imaging from Charles Poynton and John Watkinson. Tuesday launches the HPA Tech Retreat, with the HPA Supersession: The New Normal is Anything But, focusing on the impact of new distribution platforms in production and post. Wednesday through Friday mornings feature breakfast roundtables where any industry relevant topic goes. The HPA Demo Room opens on Tuesday with demos and cocktails and is a hotbed of new products and technologies that feature curated and expert-demos which illustrate the latest developments. Wednesday focuses on the consumer experience and impact, and Thursday production and post. The Tech Retreat concludes Friday morning, with highlights and an emphasis on engineering. The entire event features many opportunities for one-on-one discussion with industry innovators, technology experts, business executives and other top professionals.

Mark Schubin, Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE Fellow has been working in television since 1967, writing about it since 1972, and chairing the HPA Tech Retreat program since 1997, commented on the engaging presentations set for next month. “We are dealing with fundamental changes in the very nature of our industry, from changing methodologies – broadcast, cable, DVD, DVR, for example- to the previously unthinkable, such as giving fans in a stadium access to their own instant replays, letting social media shape programming, and all of those things that lay beyond. This is a challenging but expansive time. For example, at the Tech Retreat, we’ll feature a presentation that may appear to be purely tech-focused and narrow (i.e., new display connections) but it will show how the consumer technology is powerfully driving the professional world. As always, we’ll be digging into important topics that are thought provoking, but are also important in terms of our businesses and careers, including two of the most critical issues in our industry: the change from video-specific technology to commodity information technology, and the question of what comes next on the screen, and what delivers the biggest bang for the buck?” Schubin notes, “Maybe it’s something a lot simpler than “4K.” He concludes, “And, we’re spending a day with a provocative dive into one of the most important topics there is – color.”

Leon Silverman President of the HPA noted, “This year is a significant milestone for the HPA Tech Retreat as we look back over the incredible effect that technology has had on our industry over the past 20 years. As the world of film and television became increasingly impacted by computer and digital technologies, the HPA Tech Retreat served as an important common ground for our industry to experience and drive transformative change together. Now more than ever, the Tech Retreat serves as an important bridge between so many of the rapidly changing aspects of our industry. As I do every year, I look forward to spending time with the most interesting people I know, and ones I hope to know, at the HPA Tech Retreat.”

Early bird registration pricing will end on January 10 and the Tech Retreat demo room still has a few remaining spaces left. For full information and registration visit www.hpaonline.com or call the HPA office at (213) 614-0860 or email Eileen Kramer – ekramer@hpaonline.com.

PreSonus Ships Innovative StudioLive AI-series Active Integration PA Loudspeakers

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – January 2014…  PreSonus is shipping its new StudioLive™ AI-series Active Integration Loudspeakers, the first active loudspeakers that deliver studio-monitor accuracy onstage. The new line includes the full-range StudioLive 312AI, 315AI, and 328AI and the StudioLive 18sAIsubwoofer. All models are available immediately.

A key component of the StudioLive AI’s design is its use of Active Integration technology. Active Integration combines wireless and wired networking and communications with powerful DSP to create a unified working environment.

StudioLive AI-series speakers incorporate Fulcrum Acoustics’ TQ™ Temporal Equalization algorithms. Taking advantage of Active Integration’s ample DSP, TQ employs multiple, fully addressable Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters to eliminate horn reflections and to correct linear time and amplitude anomalies in coaxial systems. Collaborating with Fulcrum Acoustics’ co-founder, Dave Gunness, PreSonus software designers incorporated custom TQ algorithms with dynamics processing, FFT tools, and performance monitoring into the onboard DSP. The result is a PA system with remarkably clear, coherent, studio-quality sound.

Each full-range, powered, 3-way loudspeaker relies on a custom-designed, CoActual™ 8-inch coaxial speaker with a 1.75-inch titanium compression driver to reproduce the mid and high frequencies. Triamplified, Class D power amplifiers in each model deliver a combined 2,000 watts of power.

The StudioLive 312AI comes equipped with a 12-inch ferrite speaker to handle low-frequency reproduction, while the 315AI employs a 15-inch woofer, and the StudioLive 328AI features dual 8-inch ferrite speakers, enabling it to deliver high-powered performance in a noticeably streamlined and compact enclosure.

Each full-range system has a combo XLR/TRS line input and an XLR microphone input with an XMAX™ Class A mic preamplifier and 12V phantom power, as well as an XLR audio throughput. The full-range speaker systems are pole-mountable and have ergonomic side handles, interlocking stacking, and M10 fly points. All enclosures are of lightweight plywood construction.

Three operation modes allow the user to choose DSP presets for their application, such as MP3 playback, live performance, or stage monitoring. Users can also create a custom preset using SL Room Control and store it onboard for use later.

In addition to the full-range, 3-way systems, PreSonus is offering the StudioLive 18sAI, a powered, 18-inch, ferrite subwoofer designed to complement the full-range StudioLive AI speakers while still being flexible enough to work with other powered loudspeakers. A 1,000W amplifier powers the subwoofer. The StudioLive 18sAI offers stereo line inputs (XLR/¼-inch combo) and full-range stereo line outputs (XLR) with a switchable, low-cut crossover.

All StudioLive AI-series loudspeakers include an Ethernet port and a USB port with a Wi-Fi module to connect to SL Room Control software over a wireless network. Expected to be available in Spring 2014, SL Room Control is a speaker-management application for Mac OS X®, Windows®, and iPad that provides both individual and grouped speaker control and includes a 31-band graphic EQ and an 8-band parametric EQ, muting, soloing, and level control, in addition to performance monitoring (over temperature, click detection, and excursions). A network-setup wizard will be included.

Custom accessories for the AI-series speakers include a mountable Sub Dolly to make hauling the 18sAI subwoofer easy and a pull-tested Sub Pole to mount a full-range system atop the 18sAI. An M10 Kit, which contains four M10 eyebolts, lets you fly any full-range model in a permanent installation. Protective covers for the 312AI, 328AI, 315AI, and 18sAI are also available.

U.S. MAP/street prices are expected to be $1,399.95 for the StudioLive 312AI, $1,499.95 for the StudioLive 328AI, $1,599.95 for the StudioLive 315AI, and $1,299.95 for the StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer. All models are available immediately. For more information visit www.presonus.com/products/live-sound-reinforcement
