Christie Nitro Solutions Add Bite to Discovery Channel’s Shark Week 25th Anniversary Celebration

The Christie® YK200 dual-arm yoke was part of the recent 25th anniversary celebration of Shark Week, the popular Discovery Channel program that details the lives of one of nature’s most intriguing and feared predators. Attended by press, producers and friends of the network from around the world, the festivities took place at the Beverly Hilton hotel poolside.

Part of the Christie Nitro Solutions family of moving digital luminaires, the Christie YK200 featured an installed Christie Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP® projector displaying moving sharks in the pool while six Christie Roadster S+20K 3-chip DLP projectors displayed images of the imposing creatures on a large wall.

“The six Christie Roadster S+20K projectors created a 1:3 blend that was then stacked for double brightness,” said Joel St-Denis, product manager, Christie. “A Christie YK200 yoke with a Christie HD20K-J projector was used to move sharks around the entire pool, achieving with a single projector what would normally require several projectors.”

Designed for staging and event applications, Christie Nitro Solutions offers three yoke models to choose from. Each yoke provides a platform to move and control a variety of Christie video projectors via DMX protocol – allowing integration of lighting equipment and video projectors easily with the same control console. These versatile yokes can be flown, rigged or set up at floor level, according to application needs.

“The reason that I love [Christie] Nitro is because it moves a 20K projector,” said Bart Kresa, principal, BARTKRESA Design. “And in this event … in order to do this across the whole pool, we probably would have had to set up six 20K projectors. With the [Christie] Nitro, we can use one projector and then create an animation. When we move the animation and the projector around, it looks natural. The sharks are moving around the pool but it sort of gives the sense that the whole pool is filled with an image.”

Contributing to the success of the ‘Shark Week’ display provided by Nitro Solutions was the Pandoras Box media manager and server, which, according to Jared Leunis of coolux® Media Systems managed the movement of the Christie YK200 yoke and the sharks’ movement throughout the pool.

“Five years ago, doing something like this was quite a bit more difficult because we had to measure and calculate everything, and everything had to be very, very precise,” concluded Kresa. “The cool thing about the new technology is that working with digital projectors and with digital tools, we can pre-design everything.”

When the management team at Jack Astor’s Bar and Grill was looking to make their new flagship Toronto location stand out completely from any other restaurant around, they did what they’ve done 15 times in the past, and turned to Advanced, Canada’s leading audio-visual presentation products and solutions specialist, and Jack Astor’s go-to provider for all things AV. Advanced equipped the restaurant with a completely original AV solution that enhances the customer experience and includes an impressive 5-display by 5-display video wall, the largest permanent video wall the company has ever installed inside a restaurant.

“We have a longstanding history with the Jack Astor’s chain, so they knew that we would be able take their concepts and turn them into realities,” said Mark Mulford President at Advanced. “The management team at Jack Astor’s wanted the biggest video display possible, so our team of experts created a massive video wall that completely distinguishes this location from any other restaurant around. Advanced provided the restaurant with a 5×5 NEC video wall that is visible from literally anywhere in the restaurant, making an impact on patrons as soon as they walk through the door. The video wall allows customers on both the floor and mezzanine levels of the restaurant to enjoy satellite programming while they dine. Advanced also implemented several strategically placed ‘video wall trees’ throughout the restaurant. These ‘trees’ consist of a metal pipe that goes from the ceiling down to the floor, with each holding two plasma screens, making it so that everybody in the restaurant is able to watch the game at all times.

According to Mark McPherson, Vice President of Sales at Advanced, the key to making the St. Lawrence restaurant stand out was to try something that has never been done before. “Advanced has implemented AV solutions in close to 15 other Jack Astor’s locations, so they knew that we were capable of coming up with a plan that would make their new location completely stand apart from anything done before,” said McPherson. “We not only installed our biggest restaurant video wall ever, but we equipped the restaurant with over 70 LCD displays, designed and constructed the video wall trees, and integrated a full audio solution. Everyone at Jack Astor’s, from the management to the customers, is loving the new setup.”

In fact, the management team at Jack Astor’s is so happy with their new AV system, that they are planning to have Advanced go back to previous Jack Astor’s locations that they’ve worked on, to update those systems with the same innovative technology used in the St. Lawrence restaurant. Advanced is also currently working on integrating a similar AV solution in a Kingston-based Jack Astor’s restaurant.

Adam has over 20 years of experience in Audio, Video, Control, Automation and Lighting for both the Commercial AV and Residential markets. Middle Atlantic Appoints Bromberg As Western Regional Sales Manager

Middle Atlantic Products has appointed David Bromberg as Regional Sales Manager for the Western Region. Bromberg’s territory includes Southern California and Southern Nevada for all market segments and Arizona for Residential, Security and DataComm channels.

Prior to Middle Atlantic, Bromberg was Senior Business Development Manager and Senior Account Manager specializing in local and national Government Sales for TESSCO and Commscope, as well as Global Government Sales Manager at The Siemon Company where he opened up the company’s Federal Division.

A 10-unit wide by 6-unit high Christie MicroTiles array greets guests in the lobby of the new headquarters as they step off the elevator. Powered by Christie Jumpstart, the video wall displays dynamic, rich media content provided by FishNet Security’s in-house Multimedia Group.

“This particular Christie MicroTiles array is flush with the wall and features vibrant graphics, which means people notice the content quickly,” said Justin Copeland, director of Multimedia at FishNet Security. “Guests immediately see their own names or those of the corporations they represent on the MicroTiles.”

In the company’s Security Operations Center (SOC), a 22-unit wide by 7-unit high curved Christie MicroTiles video wall supported by a frame created by RP Visual Solutions displays threat intelligence data, various monitoring tool dashboards, open work tickets, active service calls and other Java-based applications.

“When there is a security concern or other issue, they project and share that information with their colleagues and supervisors,” Dodge added. “Everyone then analyzes it and the appropriate action is taken. There is also a constant security monitor globe displayed on the MicroTiles wall that tracks information security threats from around the world.”

FishNet Security’s Executive Briefing Center (EBC) Viewing Gallery features a custom-built interactive touch screen display provided by Float 4 Interactive. Measuring 33-feet across by 7-feet high, the smart glass technology enables HD presentations to be directed from three Christie DHD800 projectors suspended from the ceiling to avoid interfering with sightlines. A giant “navigation wheel” on the screen enables users to launch applications and display interactive content with the touch of a finger.

“The Christie DHD800 projectors work superbly in the high ambient light, which is both natural and artificial,” Copeland said. “It’s a 5760×1080 resolution picture, and we’re creating videos at this resolution for maximum impact.”

Bridgestone Technical Center Gets Great Sound with Iconyx

Akron, Ohio, September 2012… Akron, Ohio has a long and storied history as the heart of the US tire business. In April of 2012 the city celebrated that proud heritage with the grand opening of Bridgestone Americas’ 260,000-square-foot worldwide technical center. The USD $100m research and development facility was designed by architects Harris/Day to exceed Gold LEED standards, and it shows. The building features wide, open spaces, a “living roof” with gardens and lounge areas, and plenty of natural light thanks to an abundance of glass throughout.

The showcase structure’s east and west wings intersect at a massive three-story atrium area that serves as building’s social nexus. The common space is outfitted with a large video wall, and serves as the hub of the technical center’s communications with the outside world, and with the company’s headquarters in Tennessee.

Of course, three stories of glass, while visually stunning, tends to create a less than optimal acoustical setting. As Gary Matthews of Middleburg Heights, OH-based Audio Video Interiors explains, even with a fair amount of acoustical treatment, the environment was a challenging one.

“It’s a big, open, reverberant space,” he says. “They did a great job in treating the back wall, which helps a lot, but it’s still a large, glassed-in space, with a high level of ambient noise, and intelligibility inevitably suffers.”

The architect’s vision included a desire for low-profile audio and video components, but the design was at odds with that goal. “Their original proposal was for 34 individual loudspeakers hung on walls and on ceilings throughout the area,” says Matthews. “They came to us and asked if there was anything they could do differently, because they didn’t want to see so many speakers.”

AVI’s  recommendation was for three Renkus-Heinz Iconyx steered steered arrays to cover the entire area. “So we got it down from 34 speakers, to three Iconyx ICX7 units built into the video wall, with zero visibility. And the sound coverage is far superior, with no distribution issues and no dead spots.”

With an Ashly Pêma 8×8 amplifier and signal processor already in place, AVI opted for the ICX7 passive system instead of the powered version. “We built pockets for them in the walls, and you can’t even see that they’re there,” says Matthews. A Listen Technologies assistive listening system and a pair of Shure SLX wireless mic systems completes the audio system.

“The Iconyx system was perfect for aiming the sound only at the areas we wanted to cover, and away from the walls and windows,” Matthews concludes.

The event takes place September 17-19 at Grips Local Union Building in Burbank, California.

The latest installment of WATCHOUT from BARTKRESA design

The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week celebrated its 25th anniversary with a poolside event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

WATCHOUT was used to manage video projections of the large predators as they swam across its 120 ft. wide poolside wall.

Bart Kresa, projection designer, BARTKRESA design has provided large-scale projections many times at the Beverly Hilton for HBO’s annual Golden Globes After Party. Those installations were notable for their intensity of colour and bold graphic themes,while this event required an equally complex but more naturalistic approach.

For this Discovery Channel event, Kresa employed eight WATCHOUT servers that blended multiple projectors.

The ability to manage the designs in layers enabled Kresa to present his hip, edgy graphics and animations.

WATCHOUT greets visitors to Alexandria Center for Life Science, NYC

Colossal kinetic art display wows sciences and technology’s elite

Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image presentation software has been used by esteemed Niles Creative Group for a colossal 50 by 5 feet high digital video display in the foyer of The Alexandria Center for Life Science, an international hub for collaboration and innovation located the heart of New York City.

“Niles Creative Group were sought out by Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc to design a colossal kinetic art display that creates a spectacular and unexpected visual experience in the guest lobby,” says David Niles. “We designed the content delivery system and its respective technology to mirror the innovation in science and talent that the center provides.”

The impressive display is made up of 34 seamless LCD panels with content managed by Dataton WATCHOUT and servers supplied by Show Sage. Show control for the system is performed by Medialon.

“Since installation, the intuitive display has worked very well. We’ve designed the system so that it can turn itself on and off and it even changes and selects its own video content. Our expert engineers sometimes log in remotely to change content and even the client is using the system with a custom designed touchscreen interface to add local or staff information on to the WATCHOUT timeline if needed.” The actual marble wall that exists in the lobby was duplicated for the screen, so that when the display is in its passive mode it naturally blends into its surrounding environment. The overall content for the screen is abstract and artistic style and thematically centers on the “life sciences. All content was designed and created by Niles Creative Group.

“To manage the content, we’re using the conditional layer feature of WATCHOUT which allows content on different layers on the timeline to be switched on and off,” adds Niles. “WATCHOUT is packed full of features for multi-image display production and Niles Creative Group really knows how to use its full potential. The Alexandria Center is no exception,” says Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director at Dataton.
