Christie MicroTiles and Christie Spyder X20 Reach the Summit at History Colorado Center

The breathtaking majesty of the Rocky Mountains is featured at the History Colorado Center (HCC) in Denver on a 134-unit Christie® MicroTiles® array designed to emulate the jagged peaks of the famous mountain range, complete with spectacular video footage. The HCC, which celebrated its grand opening recently, wanted a large, expressive statement characterizing the history of the picturesque state while redefining the museum with relevant and engaging content.

“The HCC wanted a dazzling display in their atrium,” said Howard Steele, director, Technology Plus, the project’s consultant. “The atrium is very bright and only a 30K lumen projector would even begin to display images in that strong light, but that created issues with where to place the projector and exhaust.”

Ed Nichols, president and CEO, Colorado History Museum, agreed. “We had a wall in our atrium begging for a major media treatment because there was a visitor orientation problem. We thought of projectors but the architect introduced the museum to the Christie MicroTiles. As our staff contemplated the possibilities with a MicroTiles wall, we were intrigued with the idea of letting the wall tell the museum’s story to its visitors.

“The Museum also liked MicroTiles’ flexibility: they are high resolution, high visibility in bright light at different angles and distances. We wanted rear projection and a product that would be financially sustainable. The tiles have a long lifespan, which means a low cost of ownership.”

Christie MicroTiles are perfect for color matching and self-calibration according to Craig Shonka, project manager for AVI-SPL, project integrator. The first plan for using the MicroTiles was installing three simple, yet attractive ribbons running down the wall.

“It was Randy Pagnan of RP Visuals who made the mounting support brackets for the design we went with– which really made it all come together and align properly,” added Steele.

“The atrium is very big and full of daylight pouring in – especially from the south facing glass wall and the skylights,” said Stephanie Stewart, project manager, Richard Lewis Media Group. “When the museum saw the color saturation of the Christie MicroTiles, they went crazy; they loved how beautifully bright and crisp the images are – and so do we. The MicroTiles fit perfectly with what the museum is trying to say.”

Driving the content is the Christie Spyder X20 video processor. A versatile, hardware-based video processor combined with the flexibility of a universal routing switcher, the Christie Spyder X20’s integrated source monitoring allows for simultaneous, real-time, full-frame-rate monitoring of all inputs.

“We also have the option of reconfiguring the wall if we want to change things up or even growing the wall, and, in the end, we have great products (Christie MicroTiles and Spyder) that are running consistently,” continued Stewart. “This project was huge and both an artistic and technical challenge, but that made it exciting. The team that Kevin Barlow (Senior Director, Control Rooms, Christie) put together did a fantastic job. Ken Hartling (Western Regional Sales Manager, Control Rooms, Christie) was so helpful and it was terrific to work with Christie. The entire Christie team kept the project going smoothly; they were always solid and got us what we needed when we needed it.”

Dan Waltens, director of operations, AVI-SPL, said the project went smoothly. “Having worked with Christie in the past, we had that level of comfort when working on a project of this scope. Christie knew every detail, was involved in the project meetings so they understood what the HCC was trying to accomplish, and gave appropriate advice – that was key. The beauty of Christie MicroTiles is that you can access the power supply from the front as well as the back.”

Hartling said the Christie MicroTiles and Christie Spyder installation is “… one of the most extraordinarily complex projects I’ve ever been a part of and one of the most impressive installations I’ve seen. It’s eye-catching, creative and mind-blowing.”

“What we have is so different because a high-tech array in the atrium is an immediate signal to visitors that this is not a typical state history museum,” concluded Nichols. “The Christie MicroTiles array captures the magnificence of the Colorado landscape and furthers our mission in a financially sustainable manner.”

Adaptive Video Walls and Displays Creates Massive Flown LCD Video Wall for New Surf The Musical Production

Potentially Record-Setting Display Submitted to Guinness World Book of Records

LAS VEGAS, JUNE 14, 2012 — Adaptive Video Walls and Displays (InfoComm Booth C9547), a division of Adaptive Technologies Group and the premier provider of innovative wall mountable, floor standing, interlocking and flyable video wall frames for multiple LCD, LED and plasma monitors, has teamed up with Sharp Electronics and WorldStage to create what may be the world’s largest flown LCD video wall display. The companies built the display for Surf the Musical, a new musical production in Las Vegas featuring the 1960s Songs of the Beach Boys, and it has been submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.

For Surf the Musical, the rigged visuals will take up the entire stage backdrop of the show. Crew members will hoist and lower them with powerful winches up to 41 times over the course of the nearly two-hour show. Adaptive Video Walls and Displays engineered an incredibly precise and load-rated flyable frame for the Sharp PN-V601 60-inch monitors, which make up the massive display.

The Adaptive Video wall LCD frame interlocks into eight-deep columns, in the landscape orientation. Overhead rigging beams accommodate one huge five-wide by eight-deep video wall comprised of 60-inch monitors that are flanked by two (four)-wide by eight-deep video walls, which are surrounded in turn by an additional two (two)–wide by eight-deep video walls, for a total of 136 pcs. monitors. The visual experience is extraordinary and the combined crisp and clear displays, along with the use of some external elements, bring the audience onto the stage and into the show, perhaps more than ever before.

In addition to the frames designed for use in this production, Adaptive Video Walls and Displays provides interlocking load-rated frames for many other LCD and plasma models that are employed in many permanent and rental and stage applications around the world, including narrow bezel models produced by NEC, Orion, Samsung and ViewSonic.

“We’re thrilled to provide the backdrop for such an exciting and innovative musical production as Surf the Musical,” says Paul Allen, president, Adaptive Technologies Group. “It goes to show how our years of engineering expertise in audio and video-wall frame technology can be leveraged for some of the most stunning visual events and productions in the world. We also want to acknowledge Sharp Electronics and WorldStage for working with us to make this record breaking display a reality. We hope that people will see it and realize just how far the technology has come, and how they can use it to truly add dazzle to their events.”

Surf the Musical premieres on June 19, 2012 at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. InfoComm attendees can view components of the Surf the Musical video display at the Adaptive Technologies Group booth (C9547).

MOOVed by video as well as voice – Dataton’s WATCHOUT powers vide for Andrea Bocelli in Poland.

The new DMX capabilities of WATCHOUT version 5.2 are put through their paces.

Through the Polish systems integration and live-events show specialist MOOV working forlocal events production company Prestige MJM, Dataton WATCHOUT was used to sync and drive multi-screen video content for a spectacular concert by the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Staged on 29 April at the impressive new Atlas Arena in the Polish city of Lodz, the Bocelli concert – part of the singer’s ‘Notte Illuminata’ world tour – featured a 160 square metre LED mesh screen as its backdrop, comprising twenty 8-metre strips of Barco’s Mitrix solid-state display wall product. Either side of the LED wall were two 16:9 projection screens measuring 7.45m wide by 4.31m high, each showing images from a Barco FLM series 20,000-lumen projector.

The projection screens were used mainly for showing live IMAG close-ups of Bocelli, the most popular singer in classical music history, and his co-performers – which included a full orchestra and choir. Meanwhile, the LED wall content varied between IMAG and pre-mixed movie clippings and other effects, ranging from archive news footage from before World War II to a vast stained-glass window.

Marek Kurzawa from Prestige MJM explains: “The Atlas Arena is one of the biggest indoor concert venues in Poland and, with more than 10,000 fans inside for the Bocelli event, it wasimportant for the show to contain large-screen visual elements that would keep those toward the rear of the venue on the edge of their seats.”

Piotr Majewski, MD at MOOV adds: “By using two computers installed with WATCHOUT – one for the LED wall and the other with two outputs for the two projectors – we were able to synchronise the pre-recorded video with the live camera feeds for the IMAG content. Thus the audience was treated to a constantly shifting, dynamic video experience to match the excitement and energy of the musical performance itself.”

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director, Dataton, adds: “For almost every genre of music, today’s concert-goers expect to see an impressive show, as well as hear one. WATCHOUT allows multiple video content channels to be combined together into a single timeline with complete reliability, regardless of the size of the screens involved or thetechnology they use.

“To complete the picture, as it were, we are also able to sync pre-recorded audio content via MIDI and lighting-control commands via DMX – effectively making WATCHOUT a ‘one-stop shop’ for show designers all over the world!”

Christie MicroTiles Welcome Dignitaries to the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs

Thirty-six Christie® MicroTiles® are impressing dignitaries and staff with bright and vibrant images at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs. The school is an interdisciplinary academic center focusing on global issues and has hosted prime ministers, cabinet ministers and ambassadors.

Installed in the front wall of the Vivian and David Campbell conference facility, the 6 units wide by 6 units high Christie MicroTiles array displays Blu-ray videos, still images and PowerPoint presentations for foreign and domestic officials who present their research findings at the facility.

“We were upgrading our technology and wanted not only the newest and the best – but also something very functional,” said Sean Willett, IT manager for the school. “We have dignitaries from around the world visit so the technology not only has to be top of the line; it has to look and feel impressive. It made sense to use Christie MicroTiles because they really show off their flexibility and image quality for what we need.”

Willett said the center also wanted an aesthetically pleasing display in the customized architectural space that previously housed an older video wall. Christie MicroTiles complement their environment and are a unique proposition in display technology, offering video and data display building blocks to create presentations of varying size and shape.

“It was an amazing project because we had never worked in a space that is used in so many configurations,” added Bertine Jerry, director of sales, Global Unified Solutions Services, Inc., project integrator. “It worked out incredibly well and the Christie MicroTiles look great.”

Christie MicroTiles Deliver Brilliant Colors in High Ambient Light
“Not only are some of our guests interviewed in front of the MicroTiles under harsh media lights, we have huge windows at the back of the room that sweep around the side and there are also windows right near the MicroTiles wall itself,” explained Willett. “We also have lighting that goes all the way across the top of the room. This, traditionally, makes it very difficult to see the images – but this isn’t the case with the MicroTiles.

“People are stunned by the color, clarity, and vibrancy of the images displayed on the MicroTiles – and how it looks like a seamless wall. Everyone is also very happy with how well the MicroTiles integrated with the stone, wood and paneling of the room. In fact, the Christie MicroTiles are a showpiece.”
