STEWART FILMSCREEN LAUNCHES A NEW WEBSITE AND SOLUTIONS-ORIENTED SALES STRATEGY AIMED AT SIMPLIFYING PROJECTION SCREEN SPECIFICATION AND ORDERING PROCESS

New Stewart Filmscreen website features a more efficient guided selling approach that provides the option to choose from a series of “typical” solutions or build custom screens based on various criteria

TORRANCE, CA and LAS VEGAS, NV – INFOCOMM BOOTH #C6821 – JUNE 17, 2014 – Stewart Filmscreen Corp., the leading international manufacturer of projection screens and specialty optical coatings for commercial and residential applications, today announces the launch of a new website and with it, a new solutions-oriented sales strategy. Aimed at simplifying the specification and ordering process, the new Stewart Filmscreen website features a more efficient guided selling approach that provides the option to choose from a series of “typical” solutions or build custom screens based on various criteria. The new website is driven by a content management system that enables robust backend functionality Stewart Filmscreen customers will immediately see the benefit.

The new Stewart Filmscreen website caters to integrators, designers, consultants and end-users who rely on the Company’s unique custom-engineered projection screen manufacturing capabilities for a variety of applications. In addition to high-resolution photography and videos, the new site provides a useful repository of case studies, white papers, BIM and Revit files, and other details needed by those in the technical trades. Andrew Cox, CTS, ISF-C, has been promoted and now serves as both Web and Technology Manager.

A new website is just the beginning. Stewart’s new streamlined approach to the sales and engineering process has decreased estimate turnaround times. Internal systems have been optimized to accommodate a more rapid delivery of information and product delivery times have also been significantly improved.

To support the dynamic new internal sales structure, Vijita U.G. has been promoted to Marketing Communications Specialist. In this new role, Vijita will be responsible for coordinating the communications output and creating marketing and promotional materials. Assisting Vijita in this new role, Katye (McGregor) Bennett of KMB Communications will spearhead all external PR and media relations and will also work with Stewart Filmscreen customers to curate content.

“Our website, sales, and associated operations needed to be revamped to better help our customers address the needs of their customers, who are every bit as discriminating as ever before, but have far less time and patience,” said Douglas Brashear, President of Stewart Filmscreen. “We needed to adjust not only the way we did business and how our products were specified and sold, but in many ways, how we went to market.”

Instead of focusing only on product, the new Stewart Filmscreen sales approach is now more oriented to the application and solution provided, and all examples provided will be supported by high resolution photography and video whenever possible, including those of installations in process in order to convey valuable information to those who are seeking to specify or acquire similar systems.

Stewart Filmscreen will unveil the new website and sales approach at InfoComm 2014, where the Company will demonstrate a host of innovative 4K solutions engineered specifically for the highly-discerning commercial market. Headlining Stewart’s display will be a massive 165-inch (diagonal) StarGlas 60 rear-projection screen paired with a Christie Mirage 4K25 projector featuring content shot at 120fps. Cyviz multi-channel edge-blended solutions will also be demonstrated in the booth, and attendees will find a variety of typical screen solutions to couple with laser and other cutting edge technologies to produce the most stunning images imaginable. Opticomm-EMCORE Announces the New Genesis XD, a Multimedia Matrix for 4K UHD and Beyond

Alhambra, CA –June 1, 2014 – Opticomm-EMCORE, a leading provider of end-to-end multimedia distribution equipment for 4K UHD and beyond, is launching their new Genesis XD (“GXD”) at InfoComm 2014, an all-in-one multimedia matrix solution that converts, scales, switches and distributes video, audio and data for small-to-large connectivity applications.  A four-panel video wall will be created using Genesis XD and Genesis-compatible multipoint products, including their new GBOX Series of compact, throw-down boxes, Optiva system cards, and the new Eclipse HD system.

Genesis XD accepts and converts both analog and digital signals, including HDMI 1.4b with HDCP (now known as HEAC – HDMI, Ethernet, Audio, Control), Display Port, DVI, VGA, Component and 3G HD-SDI.  GXD’s massive 40 Gbps backplane accommodates uncompressed 4K UHD resolutions now and 8K resolutions later, allowing it to serve as a staple for Installers that want a flexible and reliable connectivity platform.  Remote locations can be connected via singlemode and multimode Fiber up to 10 kilometers (6 miles), as well as CATx/HDBaseT or IP/Ethernet up to 100 meters (300 feet).

A notable feature of Genesis XD is the ability to break-away and switch audio separately for professional audio editing and processing requirements.  GXD also embeds digital S/PDIF or stereo analog audio inputs into HDMI and 3G HD-SDI signals, as well as, de-embeds audio from those same digital signals.  Supported data formats include 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, RS-232, CEC, USB 2.0 (for keyboard, mouse, storage devices etc.), and IR, which provides IR control of the source equipment from the display end of the link.

Genesis XD is a non-blocking, full cross-point matrix switch that allows any source to seamlessly connect to one or all displays for continuous, trouble-free operation in critical applications.  GXD is a modular system, expandable and scalable from 8×8 to 256×256.  Initially, GXD will be launched in a 32×32, 9RU frame, allowing for 16 cards input and 16 cards output, with two channels per card.  It incorporates “intelli-scale” technology to instantly scale a video source to the native resolution of connected displays in less than one second.

The multi-format Genesis XD platform can be utilized in numerous connectivity applications, including but not limited to:

  •  Corporate: One building can distribute multimedia between floors via copper cabling then send the same signals to a second building via fiber cabling, all output from the same switch. For AV/IT integration applications, GXD can bridge both audio/video and data networks over the same IP/Ethernet infrastructure.
  • Education: GXD can utilize existing copper and IP infrastructure for video conferencing in classrooms, then convert these and other signals for long-distance transport over fiber, for distribution of seminars, surveillance video and broadcast journalism programs throughout a campus or regional district.
  • Government and Military: GXD can support all video, audio and data for multi-display, high-security, Command and Control rooms, as well as distribute ultra-high resolution interactive video for simulation/mission control applications.
  • Hospital Operating Room: GXD can be deployed as the central switch for all connectivity applications, including archiving operating procedures, live video feed of procedures for long-distance teaching applications over fiber and IP/Ethernet, as well as distribution of multimedia to digital signage/video walls throughout the building.
  • Security and Surveillance: High-definition HDMI and 3G HD-SDI video may be routed through GXD from multiple sources to a single output using a quad-multiviewer card.
  • Worship: GXD offers seamless switching between video cameras and computer graphics, providing reliable, high-quality signal distribution to multiple projectors and screens.

Genesis XD includes interfaces such as USB 2.0 for remote KVM applications, RS-232 Serial Data and Ethernet for controlling remote devices.  The system can be remotely controlled and monitored through any laptop or tablet to access the web-based GUI.  Other forms of control supported are RS-232 and Ethernet/SNMP commands, allowing third-party control systems to be used. Additionally, it features a front-LCD touch screen for control and to act as a preview screen for any connected video source, eliminating need for a local, dedicated monitor.

TDC provides core video expertise for largest-ever light festival Vivid Sydney

Aquatique Show International, Vivid Aquatique, Darling Harbour, Photography by Rodney Campbell.

TDC – The Technical Direction Company is proud to be deploying the full range of its professional and technical expertise in providing core technology and services to Destination NSW for the sixth annual Vivid Sydney festival running from 23 May to 9 June.

Anthony Bastic, Vivid Light Festival Director said: “Vivid Sydney is a unique celebration of light, music and ideas that will see the centre of New South Wales’ vibrant capital transformed by a series of state-of-the-art visual and creative art installations. There are two components to Vivid Light. The first is the Light Walk, which is the public interface of Vivid Sydney. This includes numerous light installations by artists. Secondly, also forming part of the Light Walk, are projections onto some of Sydney’s most iconic buildings including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House. We are thrilled to work with TDC in bringing the artists’ vision to light.”

“This is our third year of working with Destination NSW on Vivid Sydney, providing a huge range of technologies including 3D media servers, 3D mapping, video projection equipment, projection tower infrastructure and sound installations, not to mention our highly skilled crews to manage the technology,” comments Kain Jones, Special Projects Manager at TDC. “We have used our experience of working on Vivid Sydney for the last three years to apply the insights with have learned to how to adapt and continue to make sure that the elements TDC is involved in are amazing.

“As Vivid Sydney grows, new buildings and locations are added, so initially we spend considerable time analysing which technology is best-aligned to meet the artists’ vision. We get involved from the outset in installation design, mapping the buildings to enable the designers to create content specific to the outline of those buildings. We then work on optimal locations for projector placement, media server selection, lens selection and the number of projectors required to meet specific brightness (lux) output for each installation.”

“Vivid Sydney is a great challenge for our company, the scale of this event is enormous in regard to projection technology required to bring it all together,” comments Michael Hassett, TDC’s Managing Director. “This year over 50 Barco projectors will be deployed in total, ranging from the brightest projector in the world, the HDQ-2K40 (40,000 lumens brightness) along with Barco HDF-W26 (22,000 lumens brightness) and FLM-R22+ (22,000 lumens brightness) projectors. This is a projection technology feat and not something that any company globally could pull together easily. We’re proud to be working with the great team at that Destination NSW again this year, and we look forward to the continued success of Vivid Sydney.”

And the last word goes to Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC who says: “It’s always a joy to work on large format projection projects and Vivid Sydney is no exception. The opportunity to display images on iconic buildings takes months of planning and long nights of alignment. This year we have added several new projects to our list, which we are extremely pleased with. Seeing it all come together, working with world class technicians and seeing the end result of people interacting with the buildings is extremely rewarding.”

World firsts from TDC

This year’s Vivid Sydney programme includes a number of significant technological and creative firsts.

Dichroic Dimensions

Digital Shamans, Dichroic Dimensions, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (Mordant Wing). Photography by Rodney Campbell.

Kain Jones points to one aspect of a unique interactive installation at the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), where artist-in-residence Ross Manning has collaborated with multidisciplinary artistic collective, The Digital Shamans to give visitors the chance to projection-map the façade of the building using only their voice.

“There’ll be two microphones on a slightly raised platform. As the audience uses their voice to interact with the installation, various hidden layers of visuals and soundscapes will be revealed based on pitch,” explains Michael K Chin at The Digital Shamans. “TDC are an amazing company with the technical know how and equipment to cope with the subtleties in our work. Especially with the HD video taken of dichroic filters producing subtle gradients in tones and colour shifts, strong contrast and vivid colour. It’s been a pleasure working with TDC for the first time. They are very professional and their experience with past Vivid Sydney festivals has been invaluable.”

Gamma World

Jess Johnson & Spinifex, Gamma World, Original Façade, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Photography by Rodney Campbell.

Bringing together the worlds of live performance, interaction and visual art onto the original façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art, ‘Gamma World’ combines isometric designs, old school gaming, pop up 3D books and forced perspective using 3D and animation tricks that powerfully takes the viewers on a journey through changing worlds.

Stella Carmody, Producer at Spinifex Group Sydney says: “What makes this projection so special this year is that we were able to combine our love of story-telling with the wonderfully inspiring artwork of Jess Johnson to create an abstract, engaging and playful piece of moving art on this iconic building. Hardware and projection mapping was undertaken by our good friends, large-scale projection experts, TDC.”

Urban Tree Project

Urban Tree Project, Ample Projects – MLC Centre, Martin Place. Photography by Rodney Campbell.

If you ever find yourself wondering what grew in the CBD before monuments of glass and steel, Urban Tree Project in Vivid Sydney 2014 will show you. The CTA building in Martin Place will grow out of the ground to become a magnificent living tree within the surrounding urban environment to celebrate and reflect on Sydney’s original green landscape. Design and animation company, Ample Projects turned to TDC to provide the projection solution.

“This project had unique technical challenges, so the natural choice for us was TDC. Ample designed a complex 3D mapping solution in collaboration with the TDC team. They were highly professional, providing projection design solutions for a cylindrical architecture screen with extreme focal planes. We look forward to working with them again soon,” says Ample Creative Director, Nicholas Tory.

“The shape of the structure was great to work on. We decided that the best solution was to map the projection to the curves of the building using Coolux Pandoras Box Media Servers,” comments Pete Lynn, TDC’s Media Server Specialist. “We’re very happy with the results.”

The projections for the Urban Tree Project are synchronised with a stunning laser lighting show as is the case with TDC’s projections for the Vivid Aquatique Water Theatre installation.

To mark this milestone the company presents its new production at the Sydney Opera House Patyegarang until 5 July and participates for the first time in Vivid Sydney with The spirit of Patyegarang. Projected onto the southern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The spirit of Patyegarang is a video installation marking the first Indigenous contribution to the Vivid Light Walk.

Bangarra’s Executive Director, Philipe Magid, said: “TDC is providing equipment and video expertise enabling our company to project a stunning work of art on to a section of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Through a fusion of dance movements and music soundscape and thanks to video projections supported by TDC, the important story of Patyegarang will awake and inspire with the sensations and emotions of ‘first contact’”.

Play Me

Play Me, Customs House, Photography by Rodney Campbell.

In a poetic explosion of colour, light and sound, ‘Play Me’ will transform the façade of Customs House into a series of massive ‘musical sculptures’ that are individually selected and manipulated by the audience.

“Each of these ‘sculptures’ depicts a family of musical instruments which the audience can ‘play’ in real-time using a touch screen located on a platform in front of Customs House bringing it to life in glorious torrents of ever-changing colour, light form and sound,” says Sergio Carrubba, director and projection designer at Danny Rose, the design team for this project. “We’ve worked with TDC before on the ‘Move Your Building’ exhibit at Vivid Sydney 2013. In all cases, TDC offers exceptional support during planning phases, onsite technical support and the very best in projection equipment to assist with our designs which will all be brought to life at Vivid Sydney.”

Ignatius Jones, Creative Director, Vivid Sydney, comments: “Vivid Sydney is a strange beast: on the one hand it is a major government initiative designed to drive visitation and tourist expenditure during the year’s lowest season, and on the other a celebration of the fusion of Art and Technology that is changing our world forever and for the better. As Creative Director I must split my focus between the exacting contractual and economic demands of government, and the necessity to provide cutting-edge technical solutions to all the issues of larges-scale – or should I say vast-scale – public entertainment.

“TDC has an instinctive and comprehensive understanding of these issues. They are the perfect collaborators: calm, creative and totally competent. I would have no qualms in recommending them to anyone in the tough world of live mass entertainment, and hope to be working with them for a long time to come.”

Christie Technology Takes Visitors on Spectacular Coast to Coast Visual Journey

Christie® technology is taking people on an unforgettable journey across Canada – without flight delays, congested airports or jetlag. A spectacular new flight simulation ride called Fly Over® Canada launches guests into a thrilling immersive experience including the jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies, cosmopolitan cities, the rugged East Coast and more via the Christie D4K35603-chip DLP® projector and images produced by Sherpas Cinema.

Christie Projectors are used in Fly Over Canada

Installed at Canada Place in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Fly Over Canada also features Uplift, a preshow presentation produced by the award winning Montreal-based Moment Factory using eight Christie DWU675-E 1-chip DLP® projectors.

Christie: The Brightest and the Best Choice
“As we built up the company we started talking to Christie about various aspects of this project. Moment Factory then specified Christie for the preshow projectors so that got us hooked up with the (Christie) DWU670-E projectors,” said Eric Sambell, director, construction &technology, Soaring Attractions.

“After considerable research by the technical and creative team at Soaring Attractions, the owner/operator of Fly Over Canada concluded that Christie was also the clear 4K projector choice for the main ride.

“We chose the Christie D4K3560 projector solution because we needed the brightness and intensity to light a 19-meter diameter surface area. Obviously we needed the brightest projector and as much resolution as we could get,” continued Sambell. “That meant a 4K solution but because it’s a motion ride we needed 60 hertz to avoid motion blur – which led us to the D4K3560.”

The Christie D4K3560 projector is part of the Christie TruLife™ electronics platform offering customers superior image and video quality for the most comfortable and realistic viewing experience.

Christie Steps up and does it Right
“The projector sits out on a perch, which made it a bit of challenge but the installation went smoothly and Christie made sure everything was perfect; they came through with everything right when we needed it. Everyone, from the Christie field application engineers to Geoff Chick (central and western regional sales manager, Canada), really stepped up and made things right.”

The show opened last summer and, according to Sambell, ran at capacity on weekends and well-exceeded expectations in the months that followed. He said people have returned up to ten times and the reaction from people of all ages has been overwhelmingly positive.

Christie DWU675-E1-chip DLP® projectors provide trusted performance, reliability and exceptional image quality. Ideal for small auditoriums, boardrooms, classrooms and houses of worship, the Christie DWU675-E delivers image blending and warping, stacking capabilities and precision color matching for use in either fixed or rental staging applications.
