New Christie MicroTiles S310 Screen Featuring 0.7 Millimeter Seams Now Shipping

Four years after initial product launch, Christie® MicroTiles® continue to captivate audiences with high resolution, high brightness displays that bring digital content to life in rich, vivid colors. Now, Christie has taken another step forward in near seamless video walls by offering a new screen option for its multiple award-winning technology: the Christie MicroTiles S310 screen.

Featuring the same optical performance and construction as the S300, the Christie MicroTiles S310 screen is slightly larger and features 0.7-millimeter seams (compared to 1.3-millimeter seams for the S300). The S310 operating temperature range is 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). Just like the S300 screen option, the Christie MicroTiles S310 screen delivers excellent contrast with deeper blacks and image uniformity in even the most demanding indoor high ambient light environments.

Seattle Cinerama Selects Christie for World’s First Permanent Cinema Laser Projection Installation

Purchase follows on heels of US FDA approval of variance for Christie, allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in cinema; notably the first and only such variance approved for a manufacturer of DCI-compliant cinema projectors

Christie®, a global leader in digital cinema projection, is pleased to announce that it has been chosen to supply and install the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution at the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, located at 2100 4th Avenue in Seattle, WA. The purchase order is for a 4K Christie digital laser projector, with scalable light output up to 60,000 lumens.

“When hi-tech visionary Paul G. Allen bought the theater in 1999, he gave Cinerama full rein to innovate in order to provide our community with a cutting-edge movie going experience,” said Cinerama Theatre Manager Greg Wood. “Selecting a laser projection solution – with its ability to render 2D and 3D movies with stunning clarity and brilliant, accurate color rendition – is in keeping with this tradition.

Christie recently received the first US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema, which is the first and only such variance to date approved for a manufacturer of DCI-compliant cinema projectors.

Christie Laser-Projection Timetable Continues Apace
Christie has a history of innovation without equal in the cinema technology world. For example, most recently and for two full weeks beginning March 28, 2013, Christie joined forces with AMC and Paramount Pictures to project G.I. JOE: RETALIATION in the ‘first’ commercial exhibition of a 3D movie at brightness levels of 14 foot lamberts (ft-L) using laser projection. It was the first ever opportunity for the general public to enjoy compelling, immersive 3D images delivered at 2D light levels.

As well, in 2012 Christie showed select exhibitors in Asia how 72,000 lumens could be achieved, in a demonstration of its prototype laser projector in Beijing. That screening followed the September showing at IBC 2012 in Amsterdam of Hugo 3D – the first CPG (Cameron Pace Group) certified movie –introduced by Dr. Shaw, along with noted stereographers, Demetri Portelli and Corey Turner (‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’). The movie was then projected using Christie’s 4K laser projector prototype.

Christie hosted its first laser projector demo for cinema industry luminaries including Douglas Trumbull, Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner, at its High Frame Rate Summit held in its manufacturing and engineering headquarters in Kitchener, Ontario in April 2012.

Christie intends to introduce a wide range of laser projectors building on core technologies and architectures, to power applications for the digital cinema, pro AV, visualization and simulation markets, throughout 2013 and beyond.

About Seattle Cinerama
When Paul G. Allen heard in the mid-1990s that Seattle’s historic Cinerama Theatre might close down to become a rock-climbing club, dinner theater, or even a parking lot, he signed a “Save the Cinerama” petition—and later took it a step further by purchasing the old movie-house himself. Seattle’s Cinerama Theatre was one of many opened in the 1950s and 1960s for Cinerama films, technological marvels of their day which were shown on a curved screen utilizing a three-projector system.

In 1998, Vulcan kicked off a major, multi-million dollar renovation of the theatre, refurbishing the interior and exterior, installing state-of-the-art sound and projector systems, and ensuring maximum accessibility for mobility- and sensory-impaired patrons. Christie Display Technology and Adtech Systems Deliver Lifelike Images and Outstanding Customer Service at Boston College

With a commitment to fostering and imparting knowledge, Boston College has earned its reputation as one of America’s top institutions of higher learning. Therefore, when it was time to upgrade the projection technology at the storied college, Adtech Systems Inc., installed more than 70 Christie® projectors to deliver course material, lectures and presentations in classrooms and auditoriums.

After a successful demonstration, the school is replacing old product with Christie and calling it a great choice. “The (Christie) price point is fantastic compared to any other manufacturer. We had another manufacturer come in – offering all kinds of incentives and programs – and the product just didn’t meet what we wanted and the price point wasn’t right,” said Jim Clements CTS, project manager, Media Technology Services, Boston College. “Nobody comes close to offering what Christie offers. If you can install a Christie projector, why would you buy anything else?”

The seminar rooms are outfitted with Christie LWU420 projectors while a larger, theater-style 80-seat auditorium has a 1-chip DLP® Christie DHD800. Clements confirmed that one Christie LX700 and one Christie DHD675-E are slated for installation in the Fine Arts department.

The 8000 ANSI lumens Christie DHD800 offers full HD and high-brightness in a 1-chip DLP® projector, making it ideally suited for Boston College’s large auditorium. The Christie DHD675-E delivers lifelike color reproduction and its Dynamic Contrast is perfect for the smaller collaborative classrooms and meeting rooms.

“We also have several Christie LWU505 projectors in three different campuses in a number of different buildings including the Arts and Sciences building, which we just built,” said Clements. “The Arts and Sciences building is a 200,000 square foot, gothic-style facility with 54 classrooms using the LWU505 projectors right now.”

More Christie Technology on the Way
“As Bill Copley (Northeast Territory Sales Manager, Christie) and Adtech can see from future projects, we’ve gone out of our comfort zone in model type and we’re starting to incorporate a number of different models. That kind of success just breeds more success for us to go back to the product,” added Clements. “Bill has brought flat panel technologies to my attention. We have a sporting facility that we’re looking at doing some upgrades there – maybe we want to put in some of these environment-safe outdoor panels (Christie FHD551-W). Maybe we want to put in some video walls. Based on our experiences with Christie, it would certainly lead us to follow its product line.

“Bill (Copley) and Matt Fionda of Adtech Systems have been fantastic. Everything that Christie has promised and offered us they have delivered. That says a lot, certainly in this market. A guarantee or warranty is one thing, but to stand behind it and prove it just continues our partnership with Christie and Adtech as long as I’m here.”

Phase Two of the project – which includes an additional 20 projectors – will see a Christie L2K1000 installed in the 200-person capacity auditorium located in the Admissions/Fine Arts building that also hosts general classes and a 20-foot wide screen.

Christie Holostation Combines High Performance with High Resolution for Maximum Visualization

Christie®, a global leader in visual display solutions, announced at SIGGRAPH the launch of its Christie HoloStation™, a fully self-contained, personal visualization system that provides ultra high performance 3D and high resolution display for an immersive experience in small spaces and for “on-the-go.”

Christie Introduces New Matrix WU7K-J 3-Chip DLP® Projector That Delivers Power and Performance For Real World Simulation

Christie® today introduced its new Christie Matrix WU7K-J 3-chip DLP® projector delivering real world simulation to handle the most challenging of today’s display requirements. Featuring 6,300 ANSI lumens, the projector offers exceptional image quality and is packed with standard features that include full scalability, built-in geometric warping and edge blending, and high performance, image processing with 120Hz capability. Christie and Space Shuttle Endeavour Launch Guests into the Cosmos at California Space Center Discovery Ball

Christie® technology and the Space Shuttle Endeavour journeyed to the cosmos in an extraordinary visual display created by BARTKRESA Design at the California Science Center’s annual Discovery Ball charity event. In line with the evening’s theme: ”Space Exploration: Past, Present, Future,” guests dined beneath Endeavour’s enormous wings while nine Christie Roadster S+20K 3-chip DLP® projectors displayed a night sky replete with stars, planets, comets and other galactic matter on the front and two side walls – including one portion of the show displaying a gorgeous multi-hued sunset morphing into a clear, star-filled night sky. The fourth wall contained a starry backdrop using lights.

“This was an exciting project to work on because I am always looking for opportunities to make the most of the architecture I have to work with and even making it part of the display if that is feasible,” said Bart Kresa, founder and projection designer, BARTKRESA Design. “One part of the show using the Christie projectors included both the sky and background looking like you were at Kennedy Space Center. We also showed views as if you were taking off on the shuttle followed by views of both the earth and space from orbit.”

With crossbeams, girders and the shuttle itself overhead in the pavilion hangar, Kresa’s challenge was how to map everything cleanly without breaking up the images.

“I knew that if we just projected over everything it would not look professional, the image would break up because of the beams,” said Kresa.

“We started by creating the design for the background and separated the elements in the show from the construction elements. We ended up projecting at angles. Because the space shuttle took up pretty much the entire hangar, we had to place the gear – including the projectors – in odd spaces. We placed some projectors underneath the trunk of the shuttle and used the Christie projectors’ keystone correction to make it all come together. Everything looked wonderful and it was really something to see.”

“Christie projectors are just great; they provide beautiful images and exceptional color,” he concluded. “They are very durable and the overall performance is excellent. I just love working with Christie projectors.”

Kresa has used Christie on other projects, including Shark Week, and continues to be excited to work with Christie technology.

Christie MicroTiles Illuminate Reception at Opening of Interactive Media Building at the USC School of Cinematic Arts

Christie®, a global leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual display solutions, recently showcased its Christie® MicroTiles® at the opening of the new Interactive Media Building at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts (SCA). Christie is partnering with USC to provide students and faculty with access to the latest in visual technologies.

A gala reception was followed by an open house where attendees, comprised mostly of game and tech-industry executives, as well as faculty of SCA and friends of USC, could observe and interact with different programs and content being developed for new entertainment and educational projects. Content for the 30 Christie MicroTiles was provided by USC School of Cinematic Arts.

The reception was also followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of Entertainment,” featuring George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Don Mattrick of Microsoft, and was moderated by Julia Boorstin of CNBC. The panelists discussed current technology shifts/trends with emerging medias and outlined where they believe the entertainment industry is headed in the future.

The SCA Interactive Media Building will house programs that include the Interactive Media & Games Division, the Media Arts + Practice Bachelor’s and Doctoral Programs, and the Institute for Multimedia. It will also house leading edge R & D labs, such as Game Innovation, Mixed Reality, and Environmental Media Lab. The building features all of the most advanced digital technology including 4K digital projection, game testing rooms, and multitouch screens.

Christie Control Room Technology Selected By American Water for Its New Operations Security Support Center

Christie® technology is supporting an efficient digital operations security support center for American Water, the largest investor-owned water utility company in the United States. Thanks to the Christie® Phoenix™ network-distributed open content management system and a Christie LCD flat-panel video wall display solution, American Water now has the capability to simultaneously monitor its security systems across the U.S., in one centralized location.

American Water provides high-quality water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people in more than 1,500 communities in the U.S and parts of Canada. Working closely with AV integrator ClassCraft Design Associates, American Water developed an IP-based solution using Christie Phoenix, allowing the security management team to efficiently watch, operate, manage, and respond to security alarms and incidents across their operations.

Christie Phoenix nodes are now collecting data from various physical and digital sources throughout American Water’s service areas, including streaming video and audio, desktop captures, online information, local cable television feeds, and facility systems. The captured information is simultaneously being presented onto a display wall. Installed under the guidance of Class Craft Audio Video, the system was designed to be energy and space efficient, have low operating costs, and promote efficient security monitoring operations. From the display wall, information can quickly and easily be integrated, customized, recalled and shared from multiple locations and multiple sources with high accuracy and reliability.

“With several hundred IP-based sources we needed the ability to create custom layouts that could be recalled on-the-fly and quickly, allowing us to respond to alarms and incidents the moment they occur,” explained Nicholas Santillo Jr., CPP, PSP, Director of Operations Security for American Water. “It was important to select the right technology that would give us the best capabilities at the lowest cost of ownership – while allowing us more efficiency, and reliability in the management of our security monitoring operations.”

Simple, Reliable, Flexible, Scalable – Christie Solutions Fit the Bill
American Water and ClassCraft chose the Christie Phoenix solution after reviewing and comparing many other options. According to Michael W. Class of ClassCraft Audio Video, there were several requirements and challenges involved in the project that made Christie Phoenix the perfect solution for the job. Among them, the system needed to be simple, reliable, and easily operated by the security staff.

“Christie control room solutions are consistently reliable and simple to deploy, compared to other products that are out on the market – it’s something a buyer can understand,” said Class. “In addition, the product was the easiest to install and configure making it more cost effective than other solutions. This was a major consideration in my decision to recommend that solution over others that I saw.”

Another factor was the Christie Phoenix’s scalability, which allows American Water the ability to scale that solution up or down, as needed, to meet operational requirements. “It’s a key feature that we wanted in the environment and that the other solution providers did not offer,” noted Santillo.

He continued: “When we compared Christie Phoenix to other products on the market, the decision was clear. Simplicity, reliability, and low total cost of ownership were paramount. Other vendors’ complex solutions with multiple servers and switchers would mean more potential points of failure throughout the system with associated higher costs.
