Christie Digital Projectors Power Immersive MoMA Exhibition

Christie® projectors have been selected by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for their presentation of the exhibition Isaac Julien: Ten Thousand Waves, a moving image installation by the renowned artist and filmmaker on view in the Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium from November 25, 2013 through February 17, 2014. Working with MoMA, Christie partner Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services (MAAVS) selected eight Christie WU14K-M WUXGA DLP® projectors and one Christie HD14K-M 1080 HD DLP® projector to meet the needs of the exhibition and realize the ambitious vision of the artist.

Ten Thousand Waves premiered at the 2010 Sydney Biennial, and has been exhibited internationally to wide acclaim. The original inspiration for the 50-minute presentation was the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004, in which 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned on a flooded sandbank off the coast of northwest England. The Christie projectors will display the installation’s beautifully crafted visuals, which incorporate images of archival footage recorded by a police helicopter the night of the tragedy, accompanied by audio recordings of distress calls from the scene. With this tragedy at the center of the work, Julien poetically interweaves images of contemporary Chinese culture with its ancient myths.

Christie Delivers for MoMA and the Artist
The technology used to present Ten Thousand Waves is essential to its exhibition at MoMA. A total of nine Christie projectors will display the work onto nine doubled-sided screens ranging in sizes from 16 feet wide up to 23 feet wide, all hung at multiple levels and locations throughout the atrium. The exhibition is intended to be viewed not only from ground level, but also from the upper floors, which themselves are at various heights and angles to the display and look down on the space. These multiple perspectives encourage audiences to move through, and interact with, the sights and sounds of the installation from their personal points of view.

Eight Christie WU14K-M projectors light up eight screens of various sizes, while one Christie HD14K-M projector lights up the ninth, and largest, screen. The intricacy of these arrangements required the use of cutting-edge audio-visual display technology to deliver powerful and bright images, as well as crisp and clear sound, to create a large-scale immersive experience. The projectors also had to be exceptionally bright to overcome the challenges of the high ambient light environment.

According to Michael Wright, President of Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services, it was paramount that the state-of-the-art display technology chosen run smoothly and bring all aspects of the installation together to achieve its full visual impact. The Marron Atrium is an expansive, high ceilinged, public space where the museum has less control of ambient light and sound, requiring a technological solution that could overcome these challenges.

“We choose Christie high performance projectors because they offer the most reliability and flexibility, and always deliver the excellence our customers demand in their visual displays,” said Wright. “The installation required full design flexibility, so that they could be arranged to fit the artist’s needs within the atrium space. Since the moving images are projected from challenging angles, the projectors also needed to match the images and colors flawlessly, making the Christie M Series a perfect fit for this project. Working on such a large scale and with so many projectors, the museum used the new Christie InControl™ App to individually control and calibrate every aspect of each projector wirelessly.”

“At Christie, we help our customers create and share the world’s best visual experiences, and we proudly support the works of innovative artists such as Isaac Julien, who are experimenting with unique ways to tell their stories to the world,” said Mike Garrido, senior product manager, Business Products, Christie. “Ten Thousand Waves is a great example of how advanced visual display technology can help facilitate an artist’s creative vision, and we are thrilled to provide Christie projectors for this exciting project at MoMA.”

Part of the Christie M-Series 3-chip DLP® projector platform, the Christie WU14K-M and Christie HD14K-M offer high resolution (1920 x 1200 WUXGA and 1920 x 1080 HD respectively), and feature embedded warping, blending, and color matching capabilities for ultimate design flexibility. Drawing a maximum power of 1500W with two lamps instead of four, they are also highly efficient, with low operating costs.

Christie Lights up “A New York Holiday” at Barneys New York

The “Empire State” meets state-of-the-art display technology from Christie® for a spectacular, fully immersive visitor experience this holiday season at the Barneys New York flagship store in Manhattan. Barneys and Christie have partnered again to bring back the traditional family shopping experience in a “bricks and mortar” setting, creating magical windows and an in-store gallery through the use of visual technologies. Inspired by music icon and native New Yorker Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, visual artist Joanie Lemercier and Barneys’ creative director Dennis Freedman, “A New York Holiday” is a series of unique windows facing Madison Avenue and an interactive in-store gallery brought to life by the latest generation of Christie digital display technologies. “A New York Holiday” experience is the ultimate demonstration of what happens when creative retail merchandising meets Christie displays and the company’s Managed Services’ solutions and technical ingenuity.

“A New York Holiday” will premiere November 20th, benefiting the Shawn Carter Foundation, a New York-based charity which awards post-secondary scholarships to students facing socio-economic hardships. Working with artist Joanie Lemercier and Mr. Carter, Barneys will utilize a wide range of Christie display technology, including projectors, Christie® MicroTiles® and Christie HD flat panel monitors, to create dazzling, multimedia events that completely envelop the customers in one-of-a-kind interactive experiences.

“Barneys New York had an overwhelmingly positive response from customers and designers last year to our holiday windows, which have become known for their innovative use of immersive and interactive narrative with cutting-edge technology that leads people into our store,” said Dennis Freedman, Barneys New York creative director. “Last year, Christie was instrumental in the success of our holiday display. With a musical, fashion and business innovator like Mr. Carter, we were confident that Christie’s superior technology and the expertise of its Managed Services team could help us bring his vision to light, not just to our store in Manhattan, but also to select flagship locations in other major cities.”

Tommy Dobrzynski, vice president of visuals at Barneys New York, added, “Everything that encompasses ‘A New York Holiday’ – the items chosen, the amazing designers that participated, the windows, the design of the BNY SCC Gallery, the Christie technology and their team’s unique ability to help us leverage technology to achieve our creative vision – represents a perfect example of groundbreaking collaboration that I hope will WOW customers and passersby.”

The third floor of the retailers’ Madison Avenue Flagship has been transformed into the BNY SCC Gallery, an immersive 1,200-square-foot space with a seamless 360-degree projection that utilizes projection mapping, exclusive content, lights, and movement, to transport customers into the world of New York. A 70-foot long “hall” with floor projection will guide visitors from the 3rd floor elevator to the Gallery. The BNY SCC Gallery Space will showcase limited edition products designed by Mr. Carter in collaboration with various designers which will be available for purchase.

MADISON AVENUE WINDOWS

Floating City
The retailer’s iconic Madison Avenue windows will mesmerize passersby and customers with moving content that demonstrates how light and shadow are experienced in New York City, incorporating the theme colors of black, white and gold. Among the highlights are a “floating city” projected upon a 16-foot-tall “rock” wall, which houses the viewing area for the projection mapped experience, and includes twinkling stars in a night sky and a slow-moving sunrise revealing the shimmering floating city – enhanced by a visual program that incorporates architectural language, changing geographical landscapes and climate (snow, rain) – all through dazzling 3D mapping technology.

Mirrors, Icicles and 3D lights
A large, abstract hanging resembling a rock or icicle formation will be covered in thousands of fragmented mirrors. With Christie projection mapping washing light over the formation to create a light show on the object itself, it will be reflected into the room as well as onto the window and finally the street.

Among the technologies used will be the Christie HD14K-M projector, Christie LW720, Christie LWU420, and Christie HD flat panel displays, including the new Christie WeatherAll flat panel.

A traditional favorite during the holidays will have a modern new twist, with a window housing the “BNY NYC Sleigh Ride” featuring a rotating cast of improvisational performers from Upright Citizens Brigade outfitted in modern Santa costumes who will take children on a virtual “sleigh ride” through an abstracted New York City. Through the use of experiential screens, the occupants will feel like they are up in the air and flying through New York. Christie WeatherAll flat panels on the outside of the window will show images of the children and “Santa” as they take the Sleigh Ride.

“New York is home to some of the most technologically sophisticated customers in the world, and the holidays are an especially competitive time for retailers to capture their attention and bring them into their stores,” noted Sean James, vice president of Christie’s Managed Services. “We are pleased to again be part of Barneys New York’s holiday display campaign, both in New York and other flagship locations across the country. Through visual technology and collaboration, Christie helped bring the creative vision to life.”

Christie display technologies will be featured in select Barneys regional flagship locations in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, where Christie HD flat panels will greet visitors and provide content to highlight the Shawn “JAY Z” Carter collection within that store.

“Barneys is demonstrating the possibility of taking a creative merchandising concept, marrying it with advanced visual technologies and deploying it on a varying scale in regional stores across the country,” added Sean James, “We were happy to work with the creative team to find solutions that would work in each of their five locations, from the larger Manhattan flagship store, to the smaller locations.”

Christie Facebook contest
To get everyone into the holiday spirit, one lucky Christie Facebook follower will have the opportunity to win a $1,000 Barneys gift card (redeemable online or in-store), courtesy of Christie and Barneys. Visit Christie’s Facebook page November 29-January 3, 2014 for details.

SurgeX Launches Defender Series MultiPak to Safeguard Multi-Panel Digital Displays and Signage

Engineered to address the specific noise interference and power protection needs of video wall arrays, the Defender Series MultiPak offers a compact design that easily integrates with wall and ceiling mounting systems.

Knightdale, NC – November 14, 2013 – ESP/SurgeX, the industry leader in energy intelligence and surge protection, is proud to announce the Defender Series MultiPak™, a Multi-Stage surge protector and power conditioner specifically designed to safeguard digital signage arrays. Available in four (SX-DS-154) and six (SX-DS-156) outlet configurations, the MultiPak provides advanced protection against damaging surges, spikes, over/under voltage, EMI/RFI noise, wiring faults, and other power issues that can degrade video display performance. The unit’s compact design fits behind multi-panel installations and easily integrates with wall and ceiling mount systems.

Developed in direct response to the challenges encountered by digital signage manufacturers, the MultiPak was engineered to keep digital displays running properly without interruption. Digital display systems rely heavily on sensitive integrated circuitry for optimal performance. Superior power protection should be a top priority and the MultiPak answers this need by safeguarding equipment from disturbances on video, data, and power lines that can result in fuzzy images, audio noise, and render equipment inoperable—leading to negative perceptions, reduced lifespan, downtime, and lost income.

From top to bottom, every specification in the MultiPak is geared toward keeping video wall arrays running without disruption. In addition to its Multi-Stage surge protection technology, the MultiPak includes other SurgeX patented technologies that contribute to longer product lifespans and better performance. COUVS® (Catastrophic Over/Under Voltage Shutdown) insures multi-panel displays will not sustain catastrophic damage from having too little or too much power voltage coming from the AC line. SurgeX ICE® (Inrush Current Elimination) technology with zero cross turn-on removes the need for time delay circuit breakers or startup sequencing. This allows displays, amplifiers, and other equipment to be powered all at once without worry of blowing a circuit breaker.

With its compact design, the MultiPak can be concealed from view and will fit naturally within common mounting mechanisms. The 15 Amp load rating is robust enough to handle the power delivery demands of multiple displays, all from a single unit.

“We listened to our customers and came up with a unique solution that offers all the surge protection and noise eliminating features needed to keep multi-panel displays working without disruption”, said Stephen F. Galloway, president and CEO ESP/SurgeX. “We’re confident the MultiPak will exceed the expectations of manufacturers and their customers.”

In addition, the Defender Series MultiPak includes state-of-the-art diagnostic software that enables technicians to easily troubleshoot and diagnose power related disturbances. It offers the ability to customize power protection settings, download time-stamped reports, and diagnose power related service calls proactively.

The all-inclusive MultiPak provides all of the tools needed to protect, manage, and analyze a business’s digital display investments. The SX-DS-154 and SX-DS-156 are currently shipping. To learn more about SurgeX, please visit www.surgex.com.

The E.P.I.C. is a unique all-in-one prompter display and on-air talent monitor that vastly simplifies studio equipment while retaining the advanced features and functions of the Autoscript LED prompter series. The groundbreaking design, which replaces two pieces of equipment with one, features a unique integrated flip-down talent monitor, making the system ideal for both studio and location production. Compared to separate prompter-monitor configurations, this ergonomic system reduces overall weight, increasing its compatibility with robotic/support systems. It also streamlines cable management for video, tally signal and timecode display, and lowers power consumption with the capability to run the entire system via one power cable. E.P.I.C. can also incorporate Autoscript’s WinPlus newsroom software—the most popular prompting application in daily usage around the world. The Windows-based WinPlus adds the ease of point-and-click functionality to an intuitive on-screen edit display.

“E.P.I.C. addresses many major concerns for today’s broadcasters and we are excited to be able to bring it to those in attendance at CCW 2013,” says Robin Brown, product manager, Autoscript. “Displaying our related accessory products alongside E.P.I.C. demonstrates our commitment to making Autoscript the go-to manufacturer for all our customers’ prompting needs.”

Autoscript’s +Clock-Plus+ is an LED SMPTE/EBU timecode display that can change in color from green to red when a suitable tally input is applied. The clock face has 2.25” tall digits that display HH:MM:SS A/P in 12-hour mode or HH:MM:SS in 24-hour mode. The timecode input is taken from either VITC embedded in the video input or from LTC. When a timecode source is connected, the clock will instantly set itself to the input time. If the timecode source is removed, the display will continue to update the time under control of an internal crystal oscillator.

Also at CCW 2013 will be the +TallyPlus+, a unique camera number system that features a large LED indicator. This displays the camera in green while in standby mode, then in red when the camera is live. Switching from green to red is achieved by a photo-electric cell that can be attached to the camera tally light. +TallyPlus+ retrofits to the whole range of Autoscript TFTs and has the unique feature of a second photo-electric cell built into the rear of +TallyPlus+. This docks with the cue light on the TFT.

It’s a first: TDC wraps Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylons in projection for Australian Naval Spectacular

Watch the video at: http://bit.ly/19dRyyn

Achieving the very first projection onto both sides of the epic proportions of Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House as well as onto the pylons of Sydney Harbour Bridge was by no means a small challenge for any technology company.

Australia was celebrating the first entry of the national Australian fleet into Sydney Harbour one hundred years ago and re-telling the story for The Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review. Imagination Australia was the Creative team and Producer of the event, who engaged Technical Direction Company (TDC) as their video technology partner.

An evening spectacular involved video projection that was combined with stunning fireworks launched from seven warships. There was lighting from 28 land and ship locations plus live action on board ships culminating in an aerial fly past from the Royal Australian Air Force that was enjoyed by the millions lining the foreshore.

“The spectacular was created in seven acts, from introducing Australia’s original fleet, through 100 proud years of service to Australia, current capabilities, a moment of reflection for the fallen and a finale to rival Sydney’s New Year’s Eve,” said Heath Campanaro, Project Director at Imagination Australia. “The show was a once in a lifetime project and will go down in history as one of the most inspiring, moving pieces of creativity at this kind of scale.”

We make it happen

Digital video projection onto both sides of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons was a first. To create such a visual spectacular, TDC worked for months of planning and testing with Imagination Australia to design and realise the brightest projection ever delivered.

TDC deployed a total of 56 Barco projectors including models FLM-HD20, HDF-W26 and HDQ-2K40 that were positioned at great distances and angles, including projection towers located up to 700 metres away from across Sydney Harbour. It was vital to that the projection was visible from all sides of the Harbour – which had not been done before.

TDC ensured that the content created by Imagination Australia was managed using Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and display software and 26 computer servers. The entire proceedings were synchronised by timecode and transmitted across Sydney Harbour using Reidel MediorNet fibre optic media signal distribution and processing.

“The project took months of planning and days of painstaking projector alignment and positioning to get every pixel lined up and just right across various projectors,” enthused Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC.

“Rarely does a project of this epic scale take place in Australia. Our team of projection experts did a great job and we’re very proud of what we’ve delivered,” said Michael Hassett, MD at TDC.

The TDC project team for this event were:

Project Manager: Kain Jones
Technical Manager: Olin Winton
Head Technician: Steve Cain
Projectionists: Drew Ferors, Matt Teale, Anthony Pellizzari, Isaac McKenzie
Projectionist Assist: Max Rowen, Gareth Marsh

Matrox Avio to Extend Sharp 4K Display from Remote Workstation

Zero compression, zero latency, Ultra-HD KVM and USB 2.0 extension to be demonstrated by Japan Material at Inter BEE 2013

Matrox® Graphics Inc. today announced that local distributor Japan Material Ltd. will showcase the Matrox Avio™ F125 fiber-optic KVM extension solution along with the Sharp® PN-K321 4K Ultra-HD LCD monitor at Inter BEE 2013 (Tokyo, Nov. 13-15, Hall 8, Booth 8404). Visitors will be treated to a stunning display of 4K footage extended over a fiber-optic cable.

Matrox Avio F125 KVM extender with Sharp 4K monitor

The Matrox Avio F125 KVM extender is designed to extend a workstation’s displays and peripheral devices while maintaining system performance with zero compression and zero latency at the remote user station. With its feature-rich connectivity options, it enables the extension of two HD videos or one 2K/4K video, plus keyboard, mouse, stereo analog audio and USB 2.0 devices over a single duplex LC-LC fiber-optic cable up to 400 meters in multimode and 4 km in single mode. Extension of 4K video at 30Hz is ideal for preview and playback of Ultra-HD video content.

Sharp’s professional-use PN-K321 LCD monitor incorporates Sharp’s cutting-edge IGZO technology offering high resolution and energy efficiency. At 3840 x 2160 pixels (4K Ultra-HD), the PN-K321 boasts four times the resolution of 1080p full HD making it ideal for a wide range of professional applications in settings where detailed information needs to be displayed with tremendous precision such as in post-production, financial services, car dealerships, cosmetics services, video game production and museums.

“The combination of Matrox Avio with the Sharp 4K display provides an ideal solution for remote ultra-high resolution display environments,” said Yoshinori Sakaguchi, Director of Sales, Graphics Solutions Division, Japan Material Co. Ltd. “It gives users the extension performance they needed for their 4K applications while they centralize their computing resources.”

“The scalability provided by Matrox Avio is an important benefit for broadcast and post-production facilities as they begin implementing 4K workflows and installing 4K displays,” said Caroline Injoyan, Business Development Manager, Matrox Graphics Inc. “Avio’s support for extension of single-HD, dual-HD, and 4K video signals with the same product lets customers protect their investments with future-proof technology.”

At Inter BEE 2013, Japan Material will also showcase Matrox Maevex™ video over IP encoders/decoders that enable high-quality, low-bandwidth video and audio distribution over a LAN. In addition, new Matrox Video products will be demonstrated, including the Matrox Monarch™ HD video streaming and recording appliance, a 4K video monitoring card, and live production streaming systems.
