Screen Innovations Black Diamond Motorized is a Unique, Rollable Flat-Panel TV Alternative That Vanishes From Sight When Not in Use; Now Available in 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio up to 138” in Size

Design and décor-friendly flush and external mount options provide integrators the ability to add a large-format television that virtually disappears when not in use to any room, environment or space

AUSTIN, TX and DENVER, CO (CEDIA EXPO booth #3331) September 19, 2013 Screen Innovations (SI), a leading US-based manufacturer of projection screens and associated technologies, announced today that the company’s highly popular and newly-updated Black Diamond™ Motorized screen will be actively displayed for CEDIA EXPO 2013 attendees to witness firsthand. The recent recipient of several new enhancements, Black Diamond Motorized is now available in diagonal screen sizes up to 138” and can also now be configured with either a 16:9 or 2.35:1 aspect ratio with either flush or external mount, allowing integrators to specify the most appropriate screen for the job based on the type of content that will most often be viewed.

Featuring a truly unique motorized design utilizing SI’s proprietary Black Diamond award winning multi-directional ambient light rejection screen technology, Black Diamond Motorized is a sleek and sexy flat panel alternative that delivers stunning images yet disappears when not in use, making it ideal for virtually any environment, aesthetic or application. It has been installed in locations worldwide thus far, serving as a rollable TV that can enter and exit a space with ease. As such, there is no other product like Black Diamond Motorized on the market.

Utilizing one motor, four custom helixes, and a spool of slender aircraft cable, Black Diamond Motorized silently lowers a thin wing containing the rolled Black Diamond screen downward from a recessed ceiling-mounted cassette. The cable-hung wing then stops, and from it, a small tube quickly emerges and lowers itself down to an adjustable, pre-determined image height, leaving only the image space in sight. Because Black Diamond screens do not require masking or any black drop material whatsoever, there is no visible material above, below, or on either side of the screen surface, allowing the images projected on Black Diamond Motorized to appear as though they are suspended in air.

Now available in either 16:9 or 2.35:1 configurations, Black Diamond Motorized screens can be effectively used with ceilings that are up to 11 feet in height. 16:9 versions are available in 80”, 92”, 100”, 106” and 110” diagonal screen sizes, whereas the 2.35:1 versions are available in 110”, 120”, 132” and 138” diagonal sizes. Custom sizes will be made available in the future.

Unlike flat panel TVs, Black Diamond Motorized delivers zero glare and reflection when used in a bright environment, and by virtue of its industry-leading Black Diamond ambient light rejecting screen technology, light scatter is measurably reduced by over 75%. Delivering a next-level entertainment experience while literally disappearing into the room’s existing décor when not in use, Black Diamond Motorized appeals to the senses – and satisfies the needs of - a diverse audience in a variety of Commercial environments. Black Diamond Motorized is the ultimate blend of art + science.

Innovative Christie Line Array Surround Speakers Expand Christie Vive Audio Immersive Sound Solution

Christie®, the world’s dominant brand in the digital cinema projection market, takes cinema audio to the next level of realism with the introduction of the Christie LA3C line array ceiling surround and Christie LA3S line array surround speakers. Another industry first for Christie, the new surround speakers expand the company’s innovative Christie Vive Audio™ cinema sound solution that was announced on July 17. Featuring the pioneering combination of ribbon driver technology and a unique parabolic line array design in a single compact cabinet, the additional speakers deliver exceptionally even coverage throughout the auditorium. As part of the Christie Vive Audio system, they help unleash the potential of the leading immersive audio technologies such as Dolby® Atmos™ and Auro 3D audio formats.

Christie Vive Audio LA3C Speaker

“Immersive audio is the next frontier in digital cinema, allowing the placement of sound anywhere in the theater – even on the ceiling – to perfectly complement the visual elements of the movie in a powerful and dynamic, lifelike way that is unrivaled for its realism,” noted Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “Christie Vive Audio has set the new standard in immersive cinema sound by combining all the benefits of ribbon driver technology in a line array configuration with Class D amplification and putting it all into a cinema environment, while also meeting the performance demands of the DCI specification. With this announcement, we’re expanding our product line with surround speakers that produce unprecedented uniformity of sound throughout the entire audience listening area, without compromising on quality.”

The Christie LA3C line array ceiling surround speaker and Christie LA3S line array surround speakers are premium solutions that also meet Christie’s goal of providing exhibitors with the highest quality cinema system at an attainable price point. Recognized for their exceptional timbre-matching, enhanced voice intelligibility and low distortion, the speakers’ unique parabolic, line array design increases the optimal listening area up to four times that of the standard point source systems. The extremely low mass of the ribbon drivers allows them to respond very quickly to audio signals and eliminates the effects of high frequency breakup and power compression, resulting in the reproduction of the source material with exceptional clarity and accuracy.

“The Christie LA3C and Christie LA3S surround speakers feature dramatically higher RMS to peak max SPL ratio than traditional, compression driver systems. This means that powerful, sudden bursts of sounds, such as explosions, pop through quickly and flawlessly, without the lag that can detract from the purity of the experience,” said Jim Hall, senior product manager, Entertainment Solutions, Christie.

“There is nothing like them in the cinema environment today for immersive auditoriums,” said Patrick Artiaga, director, Business Development, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “The speakers’ unique parabolic line array design ensures a wide, even dispersion of the sound throughout the entire auditorium, so ‘every seat is a good seat.’ As part of the Christie Vive Audio system, they can be easily integrated into any existing or new theater auditorium for a premium immersive listening experience that makes exhibitors stand out from their competition.”

Christie Vive Audio LA3S Speaker

The complete Christie Vive Audio solution includes ceiling surrounds, wall surrounds, screen channel speakers, subwoofers, and Class D amplifiers. The system is ideal for traditional and premium large-format auditoriums, as well as postproduction studios and screening rooms.

Seattle Cinerama Selects Christie for World’s First Permanent Cinema Laser Projection Installation

Purchase follows on heels of US FDA approval of variance for Christie, allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in cinema; notably the first and only such variance approved for a manufacturer of DCI-compliant cinema projectors

Christie®, a global leader in digital cinema projection, is pleased to announce that it has been chosen to supply and install the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution at the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, located at 2100 4th Avenue in Seattle, WA. The purchase order is for a 4K Christie digital laser projector, with scalable light output up to 60,000 lumens.

“When hi-tech visionary Paul G. Allen bought the theater in 1999, he gave Cinerama full rein to innovate in order to provide our community with a cutting-edge movie going experience,” said Cinerama Theatre Manager Greg Wood. “Selecting a laser projection solution – with its ability to render 2D and 3D movies with stunning clarity and brilliant, accurate color rendition – is in keeping with this tradition.

“We were excited by demonstrations of the technology earlier this year by Christie and we are looking forward to welcoming this reliable and brilliant laser projector installation to our space.”

Christie recently received the first US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema, which is the first and only such variance to date approved for a manufacturer of DCI-compliant cinema projectors.

Said Jack Kline, president & COO, Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc., “Cinerama has a long history of innovation and our latest projector will empower the theater to take the audience experience to the next level. A laser projector is a significant investment for any cinema and the fact that the Seattle Cinerama has chosen Christie to help this venue continue in its capacity as one of the world’s premiere movie theaters is a great vote of confidence.”

Site scoping and technical evaluations will begin in August, with an anticipated switch over from conventional digital projection to the latest Christie digital cinema laser projector planned for early next year.

Noted Dr. Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions, “Cinerama’s huge screen requires the best and brightest in digital cinema projection technology, so it can demonstrate how spectacularly a moviemaker’s vision can be realized when shown at high contrast ratios and intense light levels. This in turn will yield an entirely new and naturally immersive experience for the average moviegoer and aficionados alike. We know that Christie laser projection will deliver beyond everyone’s already-high expectations.”

Christie Laser-Projection Timetable Continues Apace
Christie has a history of innovation without equal in the cinema technology world. For example, most recently and for two full weeks beginning March 28, 2013, Christie joined forces with AMC and Paramount Pictures to project G.I. JOE: RETALIATION in the ‘first’ commercial exhibition of a 3D movie at brightness levels of 14 foot lamberts (ft-L) using laser projection. It was the first ever opportunity for the general public to enjoy compelling, immersive 3D images delivered at 2D light levels.

As well, in 2012 Christie showed select exhibitors in Asia how 72,000 lumens could be achieved, in a demonstration of its prototype laser projector in Beijing. That screening followed the September showing at IBC 2012 in Amsterdam of Hugo 3D – the first CPG (Cameron Pace Group) certified movie –introduced by Dr. Shaw, along with noted stereographers, Demetri Portelli and Corey Turner (‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’). The movie was then projected using Christie’s 4K laser projector prototype.

Christie hosted its first laser projector demo for cinema industry luminaries including Douglas Trumbull, Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner, at its High Frame Rate Summit held in its manufacturing and engineering headquarters in Kitchener, Ontario in April 2012.

Christie intends to introduce a wide range of laser projectors building on core technologies and architectures, to power applications for the digital cinema, pro AV, visualization and simulation markets, throughout 2013 and beyond.

About Seattle Cinerama
When Paul G. Allen heard in the mid-1990s that Seattle’s historic Cinerama Theatre might close down to become a rock-climbing club, dinner theater, or even a parking lot, he signed a “Save the Cinerama” petition—and later took it a step further by purchasing the old movie-house himself. Seattle’s Cinerama Theatre was one of many opened in the 1950s and 1960s for Cinerama films, technological marvels of their day which were shown on a curved screen utilizing a three-projector system.

In 1998, Vulcan kicked off a major, multi-million dollar renovation of the theatre, refurbishing the interior and exterior, installing state-of-the-art sound and projector systems, and ensuring maximum accessibility for mobility- and sensory-impaired patrons. A grand re-opening celebration took place on April 22, 1999 to welcome the theatre back into commission. Since then, it has regularly been voted one of Seattle’s “best places to watch a movie” and plays host to various film festivals and blockbuster film premieres each year. See www.cinerama.com for current show times.

Christie Display Technology and Adtech Systems Deliver Lifelike Images and Outstanding Customer Service at Boston College

With a commitment to fostering and imparting knowledge, Boston College has earned its reputation as one of America’s top institutions of higher learning. Therefore, when it was time to upgrade the projection technology at the storied college, Adtech Systems Inc., installed more than 70 Christie® projectors to deliver course material, lectures and presentations in classrooms and auditoriums.

After a successful demonstration, the school is replacing old product with Christie and calling it a great choice. “The (Christie) price point is fantastic compared to any other manufacturer. We had another manufacturer come in – offering all kinds of incentives and programs – and the product just didn’t meet what we wanted and the price point wasn’t right,” said Jim Clements CTS, project manager, Media Technology Services, Boston College. “Nobody comes close to offering what Christie offers. If you can install a Christie projector, why would you buy anything else?”

The seminar rooms are outfitted with Christie LWU420 projectors while a larger, theater-style 80-seat auditorium has a 1-chip DLP® Christie DHD800. Clements confirmed that one Christie LX700 and one Christie DHD675-E are slated for installation in the Fine Arts department.

The 8000 ANSI lumens Christie DHD800 offers full HD and high-brightness in a 1-chip DLP® projector, making it ideally suited for Boston College’s large auditorium. The Christie DHD675-E delivers lifelike color reproduction and its Dynamic Contrast is perfect for the smaller collaborative classrooms and meeting rooms.

“We also have several Christie LWU505 projectors in three different campuses in a number of different buildings including the Arts and Sciences building, which we just built,” said Clements. “The Arts and Sciences building is a 200,000 square foot, gothic-style facility with 54 classrooms using the LWU505 projectors right now.”

More Christie Technology on the Way
“As Bill Copley (Northeast Territory Sales Manager, Christie) and Adtech can see from future projects, we’ve gone out of our comfort zone in model type and we’re starting to incorporate a number of different models. That kind of success just breeds more success for us to go back to the product,” added Clements. “Bill has brought flat panel technologies to my attention. We have a sporting facility that we’re looking at doing some upgrades there – maybe we want to put in some of these environment-safe outdoor panels (Christie FHD551-W). Maybe we want to put in some video walls. Based on our experiences with Christie, it would certainly lead us to follow its product line.

“Bill (Copley) and Matt Fionda of Adtech Systems have been fantastic. Everything that Christie has promised and offered us they have delivered. That says a lot, certainly in this market. A guarantee or warranty is one thing, but to stand behind it and prove it just continues our partnership with Christie and Adtech as long as I’m here.”

Phase Two of the project – which includes an additional 20 projectors – will see a Christie L2K1000 installed in the 200-person capacity auditorium located in the Admissions/Fine Arts building that also hosts general classes and a 20-foot wide screen.
