DPA Microphones and Steinway Pianos in Perfect Harmony for ‘Keyboards at Christmas’ Event

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary teams up with DPA and Steinway for large-scale holiday performance featuring 17 grand pianos

FORT WORTH, DECEMBER 12, 2013 – The School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary recently enlisted the help of DPA Microphones and Steinway Hall of Dallas, Plano and Fort Worth to put on Keyboards at Christmas — a performance of “grand” proportions. With 17 Steinway Grand Pianos on stage, student and professional musicians performed holiday songs for the packed house at the 3,500-seat venue.

Already DPA Microphones enthusiasts for the ability of its mics to reproduce the natural beauty of a Steinway, the music staff at Southwestern Baptist knew it wanted to equip all 17 pianos with three d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Mics each, for a total of 51 mics. A clear, pristine sound was the school’s primary requirement when searching for a mic, and it was obvious that the DPA d:vote was the only choice.

“The Steinway instruments have a very beautiful, very unique sound that other instruments can’t touch, so we didn’t want to recreate the sound, but rather amplify it for the audience to hear in this very large hall,” says Luke Byford, Assistant Director of Musical Productions for the school. “We had experimented for a while with how to mic the piano in this hall and we knew it had to be the DPA d:votes. We previously tried a pickup system, but it just didn’t provide the live sound of the piano. It actually sounded pretty dead. Then we tried a variety of other mics and positions. Nothing seemed right, until our sound techs presented the idea to try the d:votes we had for string instruments in the piano. We were very pleased with the natural reproduction of the DPA mics as they gave us a much more accurate picture of how the pianos sound and the beauty that they put out.”

While this is the second year of the event, the school’s 2012 performance was held in a smaller, more acoustically tuned venue, so the staff did not require microphones. For this year’s Keyboards at Christmas, the school increased the number of pianos. To ensure that audience members had a clear view of every musician, the stage had three elevated platforms, which allowed them to place five pianos at the top, six in the center and six in the front.

“For a great deal of the program, all of the pianos were played at the same time,” says Jerry Aultman, Professor of Music Theory, who worked with Byford on the event. “Sometimes there were two pianists per piano, so a total of 34 pianists playing simultaneously. Bottom line, it was imperative in this hall, as you can imagine with this many instruments and musicians, for the artists to hear each other separately and without delay. From an audience perspective, I noticed that the DPA d:votes just made the Steinways sound the way they are supposed to sound. It was a true representation of the pianos. They don’t need improvement, they’re wonderful the way they are, we just wanted to amplify them and reproduce an accurate sound. With a program of this magnitude, using this many pianos in a hall this large, it is impossible to overemphasize the importance of this requirement.”

It wasn’t just the microphones that drew Byford and Aultman to the DPA d:vote. As the microphone is designed to be heard and not seen, the tiny capsule size enabled the mics to be positioned where the staff wanted them, without any visible signs of a mic being in place.

“We like that you can’t see them,” adds Byford. “They were in the pianos and we ran the lines out of the back, so the audience did not even know they were there. The magnetic piano mounts were great because once they were attached to the brass, they didn’t bounce or rattle. They stayed exactly where we put them, and the fact that they are on goosenecks allowed us to get the mounts in the proper spot on the piano, but then move the microphone to get them in the best position to pick up the exact area of sound we wanted to highlight. They were so hidden and so natural that many of our audience members later told us they didn’t even realize the pianos were being amplified until we mentioned it to them.”

The school had only one day of prep time to mic up the pianos and do an audio run through with students to ensure the EQ was perfect, so the size and maneuverability of the d:votes also afforded the quick setup that was needed. With only a limited in-house supply of d:votes, the school sought to rent an additional 35 microphones to fulfill their need for 51 d:votes. A tall order for any rental house, Byford found himself in direct contact with Eric Mayer, President of DPA Microphones, Inc.

“I think it’s great that a company that makes this kind of product would want to get behind a production like ours and help out the way they did,” adds Byford. “Everyone we worked with at DPA, seemed really excited to help us and support this project.”

In addition to the large supply of d:votes, the company loaned the school two d:facto™ Vocal Microphones for the soloists who accompanied the pianists. DPA’s Sales and Marketing rep, James Capparelle, also attended the event to help with setup and make certain everything ran smoothly.

The Keyboards at Christmas event hosted Southwestern Baptist students and faculty, as well as school-aged children who played three songs, including excerpts from the classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Guest artists Becky Lombard, professor of music at Truett-McConnell College, and T. Bob Davis, a former Southwestern Seminary trustee also performed. In addition to Byford, Aultman and Capparelle, the event was also run by Matthew Bennett, Will Schaefer, Caleb Wallace and Cody Meuer, who are student employees of the school’s A/V Communications department and were key players in making sure the program operated effortlessly.

Extron Introduces Two Input DTP Wallplate Transmitters for HDMI and VGA

AVI Systems and DuPont Choose Christie MicroTiles
The initial idea was to install flat panels but Les Hofland, System Sales Specialist, CTS, AVI Systems, had Christie MicroTiles in mind from the start.

“We showed the 5-high by 1-wide Christie MicroTiles tower we have to some people at the Center about two months before they brought us into this meeting,” said Hofland. “I brought in the DuPont people and one thing they really liked was that on each MicroTiles unit they could pull out the light engine and put a new one in within 15 minutes. They didn’t have to worry about replacing the entire wall.”

Christie and AVI Systems Meet Strict Deadline; Christie MicroTiles Overcome Substantial Ambient Light
Working with McCullough Creative, who produced the corporate videos and other content shown on the Christie MicroTiles, the installation team had a June 22 cutoff date for the opening three days later.

“The room was still under construction so we couldn’t get in there until the last week in May. They wanted the wall up and running a couple weeks ahead of the deadline to give the software designers some play time with the equipment,” said Hofland. “We met the deadline and I was very happy with the information we received for designing the wall. Everything showed up just days after we put the order in; things happened quickly and we were surprised about the fast delivery time. Christie really stepped up to the plate.”

Since they are located against one wall in a large, south facing room with glass windows running almost ceiling to floor, bright sunlight often bathes the Christie MicroTiles.

“Bright, ambient light is a factor but it doesn’t impact the MicroTiles at all,” said Hofland. “The display always looks nice and full without any problems seeing it. Everyone loves the MicroTiles and think it’s the best thing they have ever seen.”

With a much wider color palette than conventional LCD displays, Christie MicroTiles show pure, saturated, accurate colors. The modular display technology can be configured into nearly any shape and size to create a gorgeous digital canvas.

ABS to Design, Integrate AV Systems Throughout New Building for USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced it has been awarded the contract to design, integrate, and deploy expansive video and audio technology solutions for Wallis Annenberg Hall, a new building for the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As part of a multimillion-dollar technology investment, the project includes television and radio broadcast production and post-production systems for a 20,000-square-foot converged newsroom/media center.

The school broke ground for Wallis Annenberg Hall in late 2012. Scheduled to open next fall, the 88,000-square-foot, five-floor building will feature technology-rich classrooms and multi-purpose rooms, as well as an auditorium, ground-level public forum, and research labs. ABS will design and build television, radio, and webcast studios, as well as control rooms and edit bays, to support the newsroom environment. The project will also include the installation of a media asset management system, which will be used by students across the school.

“As a graduate of USC, this is a very personal project for me,” said Mark Siegel, president, ABS. “We are embracing the school’s converged media concept and incorporating technologies that will keep USC on the leading edge of media education.”

ABS is taking a phased approach to the project. Currently in Phase I, the company is evaluating technologies that will maintain the integrity of the school’s converged workflow while remaining sensitive to budgetary restraints. Initial plans include equipment and software from Adobe, Avid, Primestream, and Ross. Phase II, which will include equipment procurement and installation, is expected to be complete by the end of April 2014.

BLACKBIRD STUDIO CHOOSES API 1608 FOR ITS NEWLY CREATED BLACKBIRD ACADEMY

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – DECEMBER 2013: An API 1608 analog console will serve aspiring sound engineers at the newly created Blackbird Academy recording school in Nashville, Tennessee. The school is based at the prestigious Blackbird Studio and will draw on their history, expertise, and industry connections to offer three educational curricula, totaling over 720 hours of horizon-expanding coursework. Class sizes will be small and will feature extensive hands-on lab time, including time in two of Blackbird’s eight recording studios, now reserved exclusively for educational use. The classroom space was created by interior designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz of the HGTV television show, Home by Novogratz.

“We chose the API 1608 for a number of reasons,” said John McBride, who is co-owner and co-operator of Blackbird Studio with his wife, country superstar Martina McBride. “The 1608 is easy to use, it has a great sound, and it’s an excellent tool to teach students signal flow. We already have a couple of 1608s at Blackbird, and we’re very happy with them. Moving forward with the Academy, we wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Mark Rubel and Kevin Becka are co-directing Blackbird Academy, which began with a three-day summer camp designed for high school students. The Academy’s debut Studio Engineering Program kicked off on September 30, 2013 and will run for about 24 weeks.

The DSP ‘Brain’ of Brno: Symetrix Processing Massive Audio Installation at Leading Czech University

Established in 1899, Brno University of Technology has evolved over the ensuing century to become one of the Czech Republic’s leading universities. Staff have consistently sought to match this cutting-edge reputation with high-end technology, and it was in this spirit that distributor Audio Digital and systems integrator APS recently provided the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communications’ new complex with a system that harnesses the power of Symetrix audio processing.
 
The scale of the installation was truly immense and encompassed 12 lecture halls with capacities ranging from 75 to 200 seats, along with many other smaller lecture rooms. But the undoubted centrepiece of the project – and its most challenging aspect in acoustical terms – was a 300-capacity auditorium designed in the shape of a large sphere.
 
“The volume and acoustics of the room are everything but standard, and yet a perfect coverage and intelligibility had to be achieved,” says Michal Zeman of Audio Digital. No small feat – yet Zeman was always aware that a system based around Symetrix SymNet Edge DSP technology could get the job done.
 
Modular in nature, SymNet Edge provides both the 48-channel digital audio matrix required today and the ability to scale up in the future should the need arise. Consisting of three Edge units located around the auditorium and connected over a standard Ethernet network using an Audinate Dante bus, Edge’s decentralised structure allowed Audio Digital and APS to keep analogue cable runs to an absolute minimum.
 
The Symetrix DSP – which is integrated into the auditorium’s overall Cue control system – is also advantageous to the teaching staff, who do not necessarily have extensive operational skills. “The choice of Symetrix really paid off here, too, as on one hand it offers user-friendly features such as automixing, and on the other allows external access to every single parameter needed, so there were no limits in adjusting the Cue’s user interface to the needs of the users,” says Zeman.
 
Carefully finetuning the Symetrix system to optimise the acoustics, Zeman and collaborators deployed AFMG’s EASE software to produce a loudspeaker design based around TOA line arrays and Dynacord subwoofers. Amplification comes from APart Audio amplifiers, while wired and wireless microphones by TOA, Electro-Voice and MIPRO complete the core specification.
 
Symetrix technology is by no means restricted to the main auditorium, however: two of the other lecture rooms feature SymNet Solus 16 standalone DSP units, while audio in ten smaller spaces is driven by Zone Mix 761 devices.
 
Paying tribute to the “feature-richness and competitive price level” of the Symetrix DSP technology, Zeman says that it was “from the very beginning our first and only choice for the DSP ‘brain’. No other brand I have encountered currently comes even close to what Symetrix can offer.”

Christie Brio is straight forward and easy to use, no more passing cables and adapters across meeting room tables, installing additional software, rebooting laptops, and apologizing for delayed or bungled presentations during critical debriefs. Christie Brio is a new meeting presentation and collaboration tool enabling meeting participants to share up to five audio and video presentations from their own devices. DiSTI, at Booth #1281, will show a 3-channel Personal Immersive Environment using portrait-mounted Christie FHD551-X LCD flat panels to demonstrate their virtual maintenance training solutions. Da-Lite Booth #520 will have two blended and warped Christie HD10K-Ms and a Christie Spyder X20. Electrosonic, at Booth #532, will feature the Christie QuadHD84 LCD flat panel and Christie Phoenix in a command and control/situational awareness display; and NDIA SIM TV displays, located in the conference lobby, will use two Christie HD14K-M 3-chip® 1080 HD digital projectors.
