SMPTE 2014 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition Marks Greatest Attendance in Past Decade

HPA Pre-Conference SMPTE Symposium Addressed Creative Challenges; Main Conference Offered More Than 80 Technical Presentations and a Sold-Out Exhibition Hall

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Nov. 19, 2014 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers(R) (SMPTE(R)), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced that the SMPTE 2014 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (SMPTE 2014) concluded successfully with record-setting paid attendance. Through presentations, debates, panel discussions, and technology exhibitions, the three-day event brought attendees an array of expert perspectives on the technologies, formats, and standards on which the industry’s future is being built.

“SMPTE 2014 demonstrated why the Society’s technical conference and exhibition has become the premier annual event for motion-imaging and media technology, production, operations, and the allied arts and sciences,” said Pat Griffis, SMPTE education vice president. “New display and acquisition standards, distribution formats, business models, virtualization models, and ways of moving content over IP are coming to the forefront and having a real impact on the industry. By offering insight into these and related advances, SMPTE 2014 empowers businesses and individuals to take entertainment media to the next level.”

From Oct. 21-23, SMPTE 2014 hosted world-renowned technology thought leaders from motion picture studios, broadcast and distribution networks, production and postproduction communities, software companies, systems integrators, manufacturers, distribution providers, over-the-top providers, and others leading the evolving motion-imaging industry. SMPTE 2014 attracted approximately 2,000 attendees representing 31 countries: the U.K., Japan, Germany, Belgium, China, South Korea, Hungary, and France, as well as the U.S. and Canada. Paid registrations were up 11 percent over 2013.

For the first time, the pre-conference SMPTE Symposium was hosted by the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA). Held at the historic El Capitan Theatre, “Making Do With More” was a day-long event that included creative sessions with renowned filmmakers, cinematographers, visual effects artists, sound specialists, and colorists providing an in-depth discussion on the challenges they face and the expansive opportunities now open to them with new tools to support their vision. The Symposium also included a demonstration area supported by Canon, where Sony Electronics, FilmLight, Dolby Laboratories, Technology Made Simple, and Sundog Media Toolkit conducted demonstrations.

“The Symposium is an example of how HPA and SMPTE can add value to each other,” said Leon Silverman, HPA president. “The Symposium’s focus on creativity as it relates to technology complements SMPTE’s focus on technology and standards.”

The Women in the Technology Workspace Luncheon, produced by SMPTE and HPA Women in Post , featured Michelle Munson, CEO and co-founder of tech firm Aspera; Ron Bailey, vice president, human resources at Warner Bros. Entertainment; and Rob Kaufman, founder and CEO of Divorce Dialogue who specializes in the behavioral differences between men and women. The discussion centered on differences between women and men in the technology workplace and on how women can better position themselves for advancement.

In the SMTPE 2014 opening keynote, Chris Fetner, director of global content partners operations at Netflix, explained that the complicated task of empowering subscribers requires an increasingly higher quality of audio and video assets, more metadata, and localized artwork. In addition to reporting that Netflix was the first to market with the ultra-high-definition TV (UHDTV) streaming series “House of Cards,” Fetner also noted the importance of SMPTE’s Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standard, deeming it the cornerstone of Netflix expansion. The release of original miniseries “Marco Polo” in December 2014 will represent the first Netflix content delivered in the IMF 2+ extended format. Mark A. Aitkin, vice president of advanced technology at Sinclair Broadcasting Group, delivered the Industry Luncheon keynote. Aitkin suggested that broadcasters missed an opportunity by not putting better support behind ATSC mobile television and called for a reinvention of broadcasting as a conveyor of uniquely wireless, unconnected bits to billions of devices. He also noted that the mobile-connected tablet is the consumption device of the future, stating that mobile video consumption will increase to account for two-thirds of all mobile data traffic by 2017.

SMPTE Hollywood Regional Governor, Paul Chapman and SMPTE Fellow, Jim DeFilippis served as program chairs for SMPTE 2014. Over the course of the event, more than 80 presentations were made through technical conference sessions that covered hot-button topics ranging from networked media, file-based workflows, cloud security, asset management, UHDTV, higher frame rate (HFR), and audio technology. This year’s technical papers were drawn from the U.K., Japan, Germany, India, Norway, China, and Canada, as well as the U.S. The sold-out exhibition hall featured displays and demonstrations from more than 80 leading technology and solution providers.

The inaugural SMPTE Student Film Showcase, hosted by Howard Lukk, a SMPTE standards director, was sponsored by Netflix and demonstrated how the technical and artistic talents of young filmmakers can result in meaningful content. The short films presented during the Showcase featured wide-ranging themes, from “Calibration Conundrum,” which discussed display matching and the human visual system, to “Light,” a beautifully photographed ballet sequence. All the movies were screened in the SMPTE-DCP (Digital Cinema Package) format, courtesy of Sundog Media Toolkit. SMPTE Program Committee member Corey Carbonara, professor of film and digital media in the Communication Studies Department at Baylor University, said that using the cloud platform to convert their films to SMPTE-DCP was a great learning experience for students.

At the Annual Membership Meeting, SMPTE 2014 celebrated the establishment of The Next Century Fund. SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange recognized the fund’s three cornerstone sponsors, The Walt Disney Company, Panasonic, and Dolby Laboratories, which brought the fund to the $1 million benchmark.

On the final night of SMPTE 2014, award-winning broadcast journalist Frank Mottek served as master of ceremonies for the Honors & Awards Ceremony, bestowing Honorary Memberships on Leonardo Chiariglione and George Lucas, with John Logie Baird receiving the SMPTE Honor Roll Award (posthumously). University of Sydney Launches “X-Lab” with Dante Media Networking

PORTLAND, OR – November 20, 2014 – The University of Sydney in Australia recently unveiled the X-Lab, a 40×20 meter space that houses up to eight classes using advanced live lecture streaming. Using a multipoint distribution strategy based on a Dante network from Audinate, the IP-based architecture efficiently streams lecture audio to ensure as many as 240 students receive a targeted, immersive, engaging and uninterrupted educational experience.

Similar instructional laboratories previously relied on streaming live lectures to radio headsets, which created usability and safety concerns. The University of Sydney instead chose to use Dante to stream audio to hyper-directional loudspeakers positioned above each student. The Dante network delivers ultra-low latency streams over a standard network infrastructure, maintaining signal integrity and quality across the architecture to guarantee exceptional speech intelligibility at all loudspeakers.

“It was essential to digitize audio as quickly as possible from the source – and keep it digitized all the way to the output, which is the amplifier rack driving the loudspeakers,” said Paul Menon, technical manager, audio visual services, information and communication technology at the University of Sydney. “Dante is providing the scalability and modularity we require to achieve these goals, while playing a major role in the noise immunity across the various student benches.”

The university partnered with Sydney-based systems integration firm Fredon Technology to build out the entire AV system, which also includes key video encoding and streaming systems at each workstation. Both parties agreed that the X-Lab’s success was critically dependent on choosing the right audio technologies, given the complex challenges of managing audio for eight classes in the same lab. For the networking solution, they wanted to move beyond CobraNet, used elsewhere on campus, to a Layer 3 technology like Dante that can seamlessly integrate a variety of products and support future scalability.

“A Layer 2 protocol with networking limitations was not going to work in the X-Lab for a number of reasons, including channel count, latency and future-proofing,” said Nick Orsatti, general manager, Fredon Technology. “We very quickly decided that a Dante network was the right option, especially with the wide variety of Dante-enabled products available.”

A Symetrix Radius AEC was specified for digital signal processing, given its higher channel count capacity and built-in support for local echo cancellation of incoming Dante channels. The Symetrix architecture includes a Radius at eight instructional locations, each feeding to a Radius EDGE that routes Dante audio to a central amplifier rack. The audio is then distributed to 45 loudspeaker zones, reproducing high-quality lecture audio at each student workstation.

The Dante network extends to instructional communications, where Shure Microflex Wireless microphones establish flexible two-way audio paths between an instructor and an assistant, or between instructors and students.

Orsatti notes that the Dante network implementation simplified the overall integration process, reducing costs and eliminating the complexity of running wire and cable throughout the lab. Having worked with the university on many previous projects, the process of integrating Dante for the X-Lab was simple and straightforward.

“Dante enabled the University of Sydney to deliver a unified system that took advantage of the existing network, with an uncomplicated integration based on standard IT principles,” said Orsatti.

“Dante is a Layer 3 system leveraging the existing network infrastructure, which saves on audio-specific cabling,” added Menon. “The installation of the Dante X-Lab network was fast, cost-effective, and more importantly, delivered a very flexible solution. It is a dynamically switchable architecture with highly directional sound immersion, and the user experience blows people away.”

ASHLY AUDIO MULTI-CHANNEL 25-VOLT AMPLIFIERS PROVIDE A COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO A 70-VOLT SYSTEM WITH CONDUIT AT DENISON HIGH SCHOOL

Denison_High_SchoolDENISON, TEXAS: Denison High School in Denison, Texas recently completed a new 300,000 square-foot building to accommodate its 1,250-plus students. Although packed with the latest in academic technology and the sort of architectural features that both provide comfort and encourage learning, the new building faced cost overruns and a budgeting challenge that required creative thinking on the part of its subcontractors. Among them was a plan put forward by local A/V integrator Batts Audio, Video & Lighting to jettison a 70-volt announcement/bell system (and all the expensive conduit it would require!) for a distributed amplifier system running a 25-volt announcement/bell system. Based around eight 8-channel Ashly Audio ne8250.25pe Network Amplifiers with built-in Protea™ DSP processing, Batts AV&L gave Denison a reliable, high-quality system for a fraction of the cost of the proposed 70-volt system.

“The issue was that the new school was coming in way over budget,” explained Jeremy Pilcher, vice president of operations at Batts AVL. “It was recommended to them by the construction manager at risk, as well as by a third-party construction manager, that many items be brought back under the umbrella of the district’s responsibility, such as classroom projectors, cafeteria/gym/video room projectors, auditorium technology, and the announcement system. We have an established relationship with the district, and we became responsible for all of it.”

The most vexing problem was the announcement/bell system, which called for a 70-volt system run through conduit throughout the building. “We ran the costs/benefits on using 25-volt amps distributed throughout the building that could power loudspeakers without necessitating conduit,” Pilcher said. “Sure, we needed more amps, but even after accounting for that, the cost savings was substantial. Ashly Audio is the industry leader in multi-channel 25-volt amplifiers. They are extremely cost-effective, especially with optional on-board processing, and are well-known for their reliability.”

The system begins with a dedicated paging system with analog outputs to trigger different zones. Those triggers and the voice signal travel to the eight Ashly ne8250.25pe amplifiers, which are placed strategically throughout the school. Each amplifier’s eight channels powers delivers 250 watts output to multiple zones of 25-volt Quam-Nichols loudspeakers, and each separate channel can constitute a separate selectable paging zone. District Six Fine Arts Center – Versatile Sound for a Versatile Auditorium

 Roebuck, SC – November 2014…  The newly-built District Six Fine Arts Center in Roebuck, South Carolina is a multi-use auditorium that serves all the schools in the area, as well as the community overall. Located on the Dorman High School Campus, the Center’s 1,500 seat auditorium hosts a diverse roster of events year round, from theatrical productions and concerts, to movies, recitals, lectures, and convocations.

In designing the sound system for the new facility, Raleigh, NC-based Theater Consultants Collaborative specified Renkus-Heinz VARIA modular point source line array loudspeakers. The main front of house system comprises left and right flown arrays of eight VARIA VA101-7 7.5 degree cabinets and one VA101-15 15 degree cabinet.

“VARIA was an ideal choice for this venue because its variable coverage pattern enabled us to use fewer boxes to achieve the same coverage,” explains David Clyburn of Roebuck, SC-based Musicraft, the company handling the installation. “The result was a reduction in both cost and weight, as well as improved sightlines. And the directional capabilities of the VARIA arrays eliminated the need for separate under balcony coverage.”

 VARIA’s modular design enables cabinets to be easily configured as flown vertical arrays, horizontal arrays, or ground stacked. Self-powered and networkable, VARIA’s range of vertical and horizontal dispersion angles and Renkus-Heinz’s unique Transitional Waveguides make it easy to configure systems to cover even the most challenging spaces.

For low frequency reinforcement, six DR18-2 Direct Radiating Subwoofers are ground stacked in concrete reinforced chambers to the left and right of the stage. “The subwoofers are installed three to each side in cardioid configuration, 16 feet above the stage floor,” adds Clyburn.

To address coverage in the balcony, four PN121 two-way Complex Conic systems were installed. Finally, 20 PNX81 two-way systems were installed around the auditorium for surround sound reinforcement, creating a true 7.1 surround sound environment in the auditorium.

Despite a tight timeline and other logistical challenges that accompanied the construction project, Clyburn reports the system has been well received. “The VARIA system is easy to configure, which helped us meet some very short deadlines. Ultimately, the system sounds great, and school and community officials are very pleased with the results.”
