Renewed Vision Drives Interactive Media Exhibit at John C. Maxwell Leadership Center

Velocity Productions integrates interactive video wall, custom iOS app with ProVideoPlayer2 software to maximize playback quality and flexibility

ATLANTA, January 5, 2015 — The John C. Maxwell Leadership Center at 12Stone Church in Atlanta honors the life and impact of John’s global and generational leadership as an internationally recognized leadership speaker, author and pastor. In celebration of his continuing legacy, visitors today enjoy interactive audio-visual presentations of John’s life and achievements across an immersive video wall controllable from several user stations. The engaging video and graphical content is driven exclusively by Renewed Vision’s ProVideoPlayer 2 (PVP2) software, bringing exceptional reliability and quality to a cost-efficient playback infrastructure.

Velocity Productions, an Atlanta-based production and systems integration company, was tasked with building out the video wall on a curved wall, using a custom mounting system to cleanly integrate multiple 46-inch Barco monitors in a four-wide, three-tall configuration. The challenging integration project influenced the Velocity Productions team to evaluate technologies on the playback side that would not only deliver reliability and quality, but also bring balance to equipment and labor costs; and maintain operational simplicity moving forward.

“We primarily selected PVP2 for its low cost and ease of use, ensuring long-term value and a quick return on investment,” said Brian Morrison, director of AV integration, Velocity Productions. “It’s affordable, and straightforward operationally. The layouts are appealing, and the playlists are easy to create and manage. Simply put, we wanted something that works well on a daily basis and provides the quality of other high-end playback systems on the market — without the expense. That said, PVP2 is enabling the center to achieve some very interesting applications.”

The PVP2 software resides on a Mac Pro at the core of the operation, delivering two display port signals to a DVI adapter to transport signals to the video wall. With the video wall arranged in a 4×3 configuration, Velocity Productions programmed the PVP2 software to split the wall into two, 2×3 sections, sending each a 1920×1080 image. The video monitors then break up the video signal across all monitors in each 2×3 section. Next to the video wall, visitors can trigger content using a Savant Systems six-button controller to drive the first level of interactivity.

Velocity Productions also developed a custom Savant Systems iOS app to control the video wall content. PVP2 integrates with a Savant Systems controller via the DMX over Artnet protocol to add a second interactive element to the experience for the staff. This allows staff to scroll through and recall any of eight educational videos produced exclusively for the John C. Maxwell Center from an iPad, iPhone or Apple laptop. The eight videos otherwise rotate across the video wall on a continuous basis, all built around John’s leadership reputation with each video dedicated to a specific time in his life.

“PVP2 really gave us the flexibility to align the layouts and content to the screens, which was not easy given the unusual video wall format,” said Morrison. “The software provides a level of adjustability without complexity. While there is a feature that allows us to add layers for a richer output, we’re outputting a simple setup of layers where we’re matching outputs to signals coming and out. But, we could make every single screen unique, and that ability to adjust moving forward is pertinent to its long-term value.

“Beyond that, the interoperability between PVP2 and Savant Systems was key in really taking the experience to a higher level,” added Morrison. “From an integration perspective, it was easy as bridging the two systems together over the network. Visitors to the center benefit the most, using our custom iOS app to watch and listen to presentations across several personal stations. In the future, we anticipate adding 4K content to the video wall, which PVP2 natively supports. We see many interesting opportunities with this installation moving forward.”

New Innovative Products and More Award-Winning Solutions Will Be Showcased at ShowStoppers @ CES 2015

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., December 29, 2014 – Kensington, a worldwide leader in delivering smart. safe. simple. computing accessories, announced today that it will introduce several innovative new products at ShowStoppers @ CES 2015 on January 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new products augment Kensington’s family of solutions designed to protect ultra-thin computing devices, and deliver greater versatility to mobile users and at the desktop. In addition, Kensington will showcase a variety of its award-winning products at CES ShowStoppers table F15 at The Wynn, as well as the Da Vinci II Ballroom at the Bellagio Hotel, January 6-8.

“We are excited to present these new products at ShowStoppers as they represent both our design engineering expertise and the customer feedback we take into account when developing products,” said Amy Turpie, Marketing Communications Manager, Kensington. “With the new solutions, we’ve addressed the security and data protection concerns for mobile devices as they get smaller and more compact. In addition, the new products give users greater flexibility and increased productivity through power management, and more efficiency when using multiple devices when on the road or in the office.”

The new products will be announced on January 6, 2015: http://www.kensington.com/us/us/3699/news-press-center.

More Kensington products on display at ShowStoppers and The Bellagio include:

  • Trapper Keeper and Pee-Chee Tablet Cases: Kensington has brought these iconic themes back with a modern twist for today’s tablet user. The Mead-inspired cases are designed with the images that are now synonymous with students and academics from the 1980s — from sporty athletic patterns to colorful floral and artistic prints. The universal folio provides overall protection for assorted 7” and 10” tablet models. As students rapidly adopt digital tools to complement the customary pen and paper, these cases make a perfect companion for tablets used in educational environments. Built to keep a slim profile, the case is easy to carry along with school books and slip into a backpack. A secure magnetic flap and versatile 4-corner silicone base keep the tablet snug for protection, but also allow for easy removal if needed.
  • SafeGrip™ Rugged Carry Case and Stand: Wrapping the iPad Air in a tough, padded case complete with screen protection, the SafeGrip Rugged Carry Case and Stand can withstand drops, bumps and scratches, whether being used by kids in the classroom or mobile professional. A thick, sturdy handle is perfect to help prevent drops, and also functions as a two-position stand. The built-in stylus holder means fewer fingers on the iPad Air Retina display, and less chance of spreading germs during the cold and flu season.
  • BlackBelt™ Rugged Case: The Kensington BlackBelt Series of rugged cases offers military-grade tablet protection in three degrees to cover a variety of needs, so the iPad Air or iPad mini can be used in rough environments without fear. Every model features a tough, yet lightweight band that surrounds the tablet and was designed to meet the U.S. military’s MIL-STD-810 testing protocols for all-around defense against drops and scratches. Because the iPad’s curves are particularly vulnerable to damage, the cases offer extra thick corner protection. A raised bezel preserves the iPad screen, and a clear back protector provides additional insurance against scratches. The 1st and 2nd degree cases preserve access to all iPad Air or iPad mini ports, controls and cameras, making charging and syncing easy. The 3rd degree case utilizes port covers to protect the tablet from dust and debris.
  • 48W 4-Port USB Charger: Kensington’s 48W 4-Port USB Charger allows users to power up to four tablets and smartphones on their desk at the same time using PowerWhiz™ Technology. This technology allows almost any device to be plugged into the charger because it automatically recognizes a device and gives it the fastest charge possible while remaining completely circuit safe. Users can mix and match any combination of devices into any of the four USB ports, and each port can carry up to 2.4 AMPs of power to ensure that even tablets get a speedy charge. Additionally, the charger only needs a single wall socket to charge device batteries.

In addition to showcasing its products, Kensington will host a Happy Hour on January 6 and 7 at the Da Vinci II Ballroom, 5-6 p.m. Guests are invited to come by Kensington’s “SecureBack Bar” for a beverage, followed by a swing with a golf club simulator for a chance to win prizes.

Designed specifically for today's digital photographers, BenQ's QHD 2560×1440 SW2401PT professional photography monitor includes a 99-percent Adobe RGB color gamma to provide a greater range of color reproduction for shades of blue and green, while hardware calibration allows users to fine-tune the device's image-processing chip without replacing the graphics card output data — ensuring that every photo is displayed smoothly and consistently, exactly as it was taken. Equipped with two preset calibration modes, the SW2401PT provides a 14-bit 3D Look Up Table (LUT) and DeltaE<2 in both Adobe RGB and sRGB color spaces, enabling a more authentic view of original images. To increase viewer comfort during long periods of computer use, the SW2401PT integrates BenQ's RevolutionEyes(TM) technology. Featuring ZeroFlicker(TM) capabilities, the monitor uses a new direct lighting system engineered to eliminate flicker issues caused by backlight controllers. As a result, the eye-comfort technology enhances productivity and reduces visual fatigue by eliminating monitor flickering at all brightness levels.

University of Utah is Taking Care of Business with Matrox Monarch HD

Matrox_Monarch_HD_UofUtah_student_350pix

Picture this. Salt Lake City. Three feet of snow and wind blowing outside, cold and fever, and to top it off, having a bad hair day. Enough reasons for even the most diligent student to stay in bed! But there is one important class at the David Eccles School of Business that simply can’t be missed. Not to worry, with the new classroom studio enabled by Matrox Monarch HD, all classroom activities, including lectures and white board content are captured and streamed live so students don’t miss a single thing. The classes are made available online on demand as well for future reference.

At the core of the classroom studio is the Matrox Monarch HD streaming and recording appliance. The School of Business was looking for a nice and simple process where they could take the recorded class content and provide it to its video distribution and streaming services with a quick turnaround. Software based applications fell short of expectations. In addition, the school wanted to have high quality recordings that could be edited by non-linear editors and uploaded online as course content that the students could view on demand.

Mark Fowles, AV and Technology Support Specialist at the David Eccles School of Business, summed up the reasons why he homed in on Matrox Monarch HD:

• With software based applications, the computer that the software was running on would lock up in the middle of a recording, and all data was lost. A decision was made to find a product that worked more like an appliance.

• Software based uncompressed video capture produced large sized files – about 500 GB for an hour’s worth of video. With Matrox Monarch HD, a two hour lecture produced compressed files less than 2 GB in size.

• When compression was available with software based applications, the overall quality of the video suffered. With Matrox Monarch HD’s H.264 encoder, pristine quality recordings were produced.

• Other options considered limited the encoding and streaming to be done at the same bit rate only. Matrox Monarch HD was the only option that provided the flexibility to record videos at a much higher quality, independent from the streaming bit rate. One could record at up to 25 Mbps if required and stream at up to 5 Mbps simultaneously.

Fowles states, “With its video recording and streaming capabilities, stability, and competitive price, I am pleased with the Matrox Monarch HD. For us, the biggest criteria were reliability and simplicity – and the Matrox Monarch HD fit both of those very nicely.”

The Set Up
Classrooms where the courses are recorded are fitted with two remote cameras mounted on the wall and another camera on a tripod, all connected to a production switcher placed on a cart. The input to the Matrox Monarch HD appliance is connected to the output of the production switcher. The video recording settings are pre-configured to capture at 1280 x 720 resolution, 4 Mbps bit rate, and 30 frames per second.

In addition, a simpler, more portable solution is also conceived using a second Monarch HD. The HDMI output of a portable JVC camera is connected to the input of the second Monarch HD. A SATA (laptop) hard drive is used to store the recordings and it easily plugs into the output (USB port) of the Matrox Monarch HD appliance.

An AMX control room system is used to remotely control the computer and projectors in the classroom setting. By using the simple Monarch HD Control API, the Monarch HD appliance as well can be controlled by the AMX system.

The Process
Within minutes, a facilitator in the class, usually a Teaching Assistant, can be taught to take on the role of a production crew – to switch cameras, and easily control the recording and streaming by pushing the one touch Stream/Record buttons conveniently located on the front of the Monarch HD.

The classroom recordings are captured as MP4 files. At the end of the class, the SATA drive with the captured video files is simply unplugged, taken to the lecturer’s office, reviewed, edited, and processed with quick turnaround times. The NLE (non-linear editor) of choice is Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. The edited class content files are then uploaded to a video sharing platform called Kaltura which is used to store and stream the video. To build online course content, files from Kaltura are embedded into a course management system called Canvas. The students then get access to the courses through the Canvas system.

Using the RTMP protocol and Matrox Monarch HD, the School of Business is streaming live through YouTube at 1.2 to 1.5 Mbps, and it is working beautifully, “just gorgeous”, according to Fowles. They do this by creating a profile in YouTube and uploading the XML file into the Matrox Monarch HD appliance.

Fowles comments, “Matrox Monarch HD does such a nice job of capturing content at higher compress rates, giving us smaller files, that it really makes our turnaround process for recordings faster, smoother, and that’s why we have gone that way.”

The Results
The School of Business has gone from streaming one or two classes a year to two or three classes a week now! Given the increased interest, over the next year, they see the possibility of two or three classes being streamed simultaneously.

Currently providing online courses, the School of Business is looking to expand into providing an online degree.

Solotech Increases Yamaha NUAGE Awareness In Canada

Solotech NUAGE DEMO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—A recent Yamaha NUAGE demo took place at Solotech in Quebec City, increasing awareness of the new advanced digital audio production system to the Canadian market, and educating its clients about the new system.

Held in October, the “NUAGE Demo Week” included Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems team member Michel Trépanier and Marcel Maurceri and François Thibault, Solotech Studio Specialist, who conducted approximately a dozen of demos and presentations to clients. “The clients really enjoyed the event and were amazed by NUAGE and its impressive possibilities for post-production,” states Fabien Panou, Marketing & Communications for Solotech.

“Mr.Thibault received training from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, and is probably one the most well-trained representatives in Canada on the system, Panou said. He has already sold three NUAGE systems this year, and interest from our clients is continually growing.”

Attendees consisted of studio owners, audio specialists in the video game industry, and educational institutions. “The NUAGE system integrates perfectly with the capacity of Nuendo,” notes Jacques Monminy, Studio TRAM, while Pierre Rousseau owner of Studio SFX said he’s been working in a Pro Tools environment for the last 20 years and was very surprised how the NUAGE system is revolutionary on many aspects. “The system brings creativity and productivity to another level.”
