DANLEY JERICHO HORNS COVER NORTH TO SOUTH AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY’S BEAVER STADIUM

Penn_State_Beaver_StadiumUNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA – SEPTEMBER 2014: The Penn State Nittany Lions play all of their home games at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania. With an astounding capacity of over 106,000, Beaver Stadium is the second largest stadium in the Western hemisphere (after the University of Michigan’s stadium) and the fourth largest in the world. A recent off-season upgrade to high-definition LED scoreboards inspired a parallel upgrade to a new high-definition sound system that relies on Danley Sound Labs Jericho Horns to throw sound from the south end zone clear across to the north end zone – and all areas between – with point-source, horn-loaded fidelity. Coverage is a remarkable ±2dB across that huge expanse, and eight Danley TH-812 subwoofers support the full-range content with honest, musical low end that shakes the stands.

Clair Solutions Senior Systems Designer Jim Devenney (Manheim, Pennsylvania) designed the system with assistance from Chad Edwardson at Danley Sound Labs and Al Harris from Populous Architects (Kansas City, Missouri). Jason Hertz led the installation for Clair Solutions with assistance from Jonathan Hoffman and Forrest Brewer from Barton-Mallow/Alexander, the general contractor. “The new scoreboard would no longer be able to accommodate the old sound system,” said Devenney. “It simply wouldn’t fit. Mike Hedden, Danley president, came up from Georgia to demo a Danley Sound Labs solution, and the school officials liked its full-bandwidth sound, dynamic response, and even coverage.” Importantly, the Danley solution would allow Devenney to cover the entire stadium with a much smaller footprint. Hedden commented, “Our demo was an opportunity to do a side-by-side with a very popular line array. At 800 feet the Jericho Horn was clear and present, like it was fifty feet away. When we switched to the existing line array it was as if the sound stepped backwards three hundred feet. It was a stunning difference. One of the officials asked me how I could explain what everyone was hearing. I replied, to paraphrase the founders, we hold these truths to be self evident, that all loudspeakers are not created equal!”

The system hangs from three levels on the new scoreboard, and each side is a mirror image of the other side. At the top level, two Danley J4 Jericho Horns hit the stands beyond the opposite end zone. Below that level, four Danley J3 Jericho Horns cover the far half of the east and west stands. At the lowest level, two Danley J3 Jericho Horns cover the near half of the east and west stands, and two Danley SH95-HO loudspeakers provide near fill. All told, eight Danley TH-812 subwoofers, four on the top and four on the bottom, provide abundant bass. Devenney left a distributed system of fill speakers under overhangs in place. Lab.gruppen LM26 processors running Lake software provide equalization and protection for the system. Lab.gruppen FP-Series amplifiers with the NLB-60E controller provide system power as well as network control and monitoring.

“Everything worked out very well,” said Devenney. “Coverage is excellent: plus or minus 2dBA throughout the stadium, except in club areas where I intentionally made things quieter. The system has good articulation, nice fullness, great dynamics, and impressive vocal clarity. The J4’s do a great job getting high end to the far side of the stadium, and the efficiency of the Danley components reduced the footprint considerably from where it had been.”

Studio_Prodigy_Session_6_Jim_Scott

The Studio Prodigy Master Class Series continues with Session Six:  Jim Scott | From the Ground Up, on November 8 and 9 at Jim’s notorious personal studio, PLYRZ Studios, in Valencia California.  This is a two-day advanced class encompassing recording, mixing and production techniques, along with special presentations from our sponsors throughout the event.

Renown for clean, vibey and impeccable sounding recordings, Jim Scott has brought his sense of style and his mid-western work ethic into the studio, making memorable records with remarkable artists for over three decades.  His techniques for capturing the essence of a band have been refined through the making of classic albums with the likes of Sting, Tom Petty, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Dixie Chicks, Wilco, and Whiskeytown.  Jim has won 7 Grammy awards, including Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical, for Tom Petty’s Wildflowers.

Just up the freeway from Los Angeles, Jim’s studio is a veritable playground for musicians; an enormous warehouse space full of instruments, clad in tapestries and lights, always ready to rock.  PLYRZ studio is centered around a classic Neve 8048 and two BCM-10 sidecars, augmented by Jim’s collection of vintage outboard gear and sizeable mic collection.

Saturday begins with an overview of Jim’s recording setup at PLYRZ Studios, and a discussion of Jim’s philosophy of making records.  Through the course of the day, we will record a complete song with a fantastic band, and in the process, Jim will show you everything he does to capture a great performance, from micing techniques to production ideas to mentoring the artists and getting the best performances out of them.

Sunday’s session will start with wrapping up overdubs and continue with mixing the track.   Jim will walk you through his mix process, answering questions and demonstrating how he thinks about and feels a mix.  Combining the best of old school technique with a little bit of modern technology, this will prove to be a very hands-on experience for attendees, as Jim mixes everything by hand, with little help from automation!

At the end of day two, Studio Prodigy hosts a Gear and Beer fest in the stunning lounge area of PLYRZ Studios, with a view of the Santa Clarita Valley. Here you will be able to check out the great gear with representatives from our sponsors, and hang with Jim as he relates stories from his lengthy career of making records that we all know and love.

Stewart Audio Launches Low-Power Networked Amplifier Series

Compact, affordable Dante™-enabled amplifiers bring audio networking benefits to installations requiring lower channel counts for local amplification

SONORA, California, September 4, 2014 — The benefits of digital audio networking continue to extend past the mixing board and signal processing racks, bringing simpler connectivity, lighter infrastructure and improved flexibility and control to the amplification stage and beyond. However, most networked amplifiers today specialize in high channel counts for large installations, with amplifiers centralized in densely populated racks to serve global PA systems.

Stewart Audio today introduces a family of four low-wattage, networked amplifiers that address the need for lower channel count support at the local amplification stage. The new series brings the benefits of power-efficient digital audio networking to an underserved customer base, where consultants, systems integrators, dealers and end users require simple, affordable networked amplifier solutions scaled for smaller zones. This provides an affordable and reliable option to the larger, high-wattage amplifiers for high channel counts that permeate the market.

Importantly, the compact footprint of all four products enables simple installation at endpoints, providing networked amplification to smaller zones – whether for standalone needs in small-to-mid-sized installations; or to provide low-power amplification to smaller, distant zones in larger scale projects. Dual inputs in two models (AV25-2 NET+, CVA50-1 NET+) allow customers to serve both local and global PA systems if desired, with the option to target and prioritize pages and other audio events across many zones. This flexibility ensures that Stewart Audio customers can address larger facility needs while filling the void of local amplification requirements.

“To date, the market has lacked an affordable way to position networked amplifiers at endpoints,” said Brian McCormick, chief marketing officer, Stewart Audio. “Our new family of compact amplifiers create a cost-efficient way to run CAT5 or CAT6 cable to local zones, allowing our customers to enjoy the benefits of digital audio networking beyond the central infrastructure. These products give our customers a simple and affordable way to address a broad range of low power, low channel count applications without the expense of larger networked amplifiers, or the complexity of architecting custom solutions with bridge devices and analog amplifiers.”

Stewart Audio incorporates the market-leading Dante™ media networking solution from Audinate into its product architecture to enable many operational benefits. The incorporation of Dante Ultimo technology in all four products specifically addresses the requirement of affordable networking solutions for lower channel counts and lower power consumption. Compatibility with other Dante-enabled products is also ensured for a seamless, high-performance networking architecture across installations of any size.

Installations are further simplified with the presence of Symetrix Composer 2.0 software. Composer 2.0 software natively integrates device discovery and signal routing all four new products through its unique Dante third-party programming environment. This further reduces complexity for the installer, accelerating deployment times and creating a cohesive end-to-end Dante networking solution with local amplification.

The complete range of new Stewart Audio networked amplification solutions include:
• AV25-2 NET+: A 2x25W, 4 or 8 ohm low impedance amplifier with two analog and two Dante inputs, and remote and local volume control. Automated port switching can override audio feeds depending on which Dante or analog feed is set to priority.
AV25-2 NET: A digital-only version of the AV25-2 NET+ with two Dante inputs.
• CVA50-1 NET+: A 50W, 70/100V mono amplifier with one analog and one Dante input, remote and local volume control, and automated priority port switching to insert local audio feeds over main programs.
CVA50-1 NET: A digital-only version of the CVA50-1 NET+ with a single Dante input.

All four compact solutions can be pole mounted or attached to a flat surface near loudspeakers, and are plenum-rated to reduce the installation costs associated with rack-mounted systems. However, the 1/3RU design enables simple integration into central equipment racks if desired.
