Peter Jackson Selects Christie HFR Projection for World Premiere of “The Hobbit”

The technology on display at the premiere of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” presented by Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), and New Line Cinema, represents years of effort and a bold step forward in the ultimate cinema experience. To do justice to Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson’s vision, Christie has been chosen to supply the digital cinema/HFR projection technology for the world premiere, to be held at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington, New Zealand, on November 28, 2012.

Two top-of-the-line Christie Solaria CP2230 series digital projectors will flood the screen for the highly anticipated film premiere with more than 12 foot lamberts (ft-L) brightness, revealing astonishing detail in the scenery, costumes and expressions of the characters. The current standard for 3D light levels on screens is 3 to 4.5 ft-L, while 2D light levels are standardized at 14 ft-L. The Christie Duo integration kit combines the intensity of the dual CP2230 projectors.

“With Christie’s support, our Wellington Premiere will present ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ at its full technical potential – in vibrant, bright High Frame Rate 3-D. I thank Christie for helping us push the boundaries and give audiences a glimpse into the exciting future of cinema presentation,” director Peter Jackson said.

Jack Kline, president and COO, Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc., was equally enthusiastic. “Endorsements from industry leaders like Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. Pictures, MGM and New Line Cinema compliment Christie’s leadership position in the visual technology world, which we’ve achieved by consistently delivering what exhibitors and audiences want.”

Christie’s digital projectors, installed by its Xebex cinema partner, will also play a leading role in the Tokyo premiere of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” taking place at the Toho Cinemas in Roppongi Hills on December 1st, with Mr. Jackson in attendance.

Christie, Park Road See Fruits of Joint Research
Christie signed a technology co-operation agreement with Park Road Post Production Ltd. (“Park Road”) and Weta Digital Ltd. (“Weta”) in April 2012 to work together to advance the state of the art of digital cinema production and projection, with an emphasis on high frame rate (HFR) delivery.

As part of that agreement, Park Road and Weta upgraded their facilities with Christie projectors and provided Christie with review, testing and feedback on new hardware and software developments related to high-bandwidth interfaces and HFR technology, as well as sample movie content (consistent with the content owner’s permission) for Christie to use in testing its projectors and integrated media block (IMB) units.

“The success of our joint research and knowledge exchange has led to the creation of the most reliable high frame rate IMB/projection solution available and this will be evident to all at ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ premiere and beyond,” said Cameron Harland, General Manager, Park Road, “and using the world’s first totally integrated and commercially available dual-projection system, we are anticipating a stunning rendition of the film.”

Park Road
Park Road is a premier post production facility located in Wellington, New Zealand. Visit http://www.parkroadpost.co.nz/.

Christie’s Commitment to HFR
The two main goals of Christie’s HFR activities are to help the industry develop the best HFR content and the best delivery system for HFR content. The first goal involves assisting leading-edge filmmakers and post-production companies in perfecting HFR movie creation, so the industry has the most engaging, entertaining content possible. The second goal is to assist exhibitors in showing these 3D HFR movies in all their glory. To these ends, Christie is helping create the standards for 3D HFR movies through formal and informal technology-development alliances with major producers and directors, post production facilities, studios and technology partners. On the exhibitor’s front, Christie provides one stop shopping for all the hardware, software and services that enable exhibitors to deliver a filmmaker’s vision in stunning 3D HFR quality. Gearhouse Broadcast Serves Up Barclays ATP World Tour Tennis Finals with Hitachi Cameras

Watford, England – “In the short time since we took delivery, the Hitachi broadcast cameras have proved themselves to be reliable, versatile and sophisticated, so we are looking forward to what our team can achieve with them at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals,” said Kevin Moorhouse, Gearhouse Broadcast’s Chief Operating Officer at the start of the ATP World Tour showpiece finale in London’s 02 Arena where the company will exclusively use Hitachi high definition cameras to televise the tennis tournament.

At the tournament, Gearhouse Broadcast provides all technical, crewing and production facilities for its client, Tennis Properties Limited (TPL), which operates the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournaments. It will use 12 HD-SK1200 high-end multi-format 1080p/3G production cameras as well as two channels of Hitachi’s new SK-HD1500 HD Supermotion system camera to equip its production team.

Within its production system, which is provided as a Fly-away facility, the role played by the production cameras is massive. Hence Gearhouse Broadcast’s decision earlier this year to make a major capital investment in the new Hitachi cameras marked a strategic milestone for the company.

“Out of the box, we have found the Hitachi cameras to be versatile and reliable – in the first month we took 22 of our HD-SK 1200 cameras and two Supermotion SK-HD 1500 slo-mo cameras to equip the team that televised the ATP World Tour tennis event in Cincinnati,” remarked Kevin Moorhouse. “Once there, we confirmed what we already knew – the Hitachi cameras performed outstandingly in this demanding production environment. In a wide range of different lighting conditions in Cincinnati we enjoyed excellent picture quality and where impressed by the cameras signal to noise performance.”

During the Barclay’s ATP World Tour Finals, Gearhouse Broadcast’s team of audio, video, and communications specialists will be constantly on hand to support the production team and ensure all facilities and broadcast equipment run smoothly. This year, they will be joined by a Hitachi support engineering team that will help support the event as well as gaining valuable user feedback, which the company will use in its on-going camera development programme.

“Through major sporting events such as this, we can build our reputation as a leading supplier of 3G and future broadcast camera technology,” commented Paddy Roache, Director and General Manager of Hitachi Kokusai Electric Europe. “We are developing a close strategic partnership with Gearhouse Broadcast and we are very pleased to support their international broadcast operations.”

Australian Open tennis tournament

Following hot on the heels of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Gearhouse Broadcast has announced its intention to use Hitachi cameras to televise the Australian Open Tennis Tournament in Melbourne next January. The company will provide broadcast services for host broadcaster Channel 7, as well as bespoke support to international broadcasters, ESPN, the Tennis Channel and Tennis Australia.

In Melbourne, Gearhouse Broadcast will install 55 SK-HD1200 high-end multi-format 1080p/3G production cameras as well as seven channels of Hitachi’s new SK-HD 1500 HD Supermotion system camera. The cameras will provide coverage of the event’s seven main show courts at Melbourne Park, split between the iconic Rod Laver Arena and the newer Hisense Arena.

In addition to the Hitachi SK-HD1200 3G production cameras and SK-HD1500 6G super motion cameras, Gearhouse Broadcast will construct a Fly-away TV broadcast facility complete with all technical, crewing and production resources to create a sophisticated and multi-faceted broadcast workflow at the tournament.

Disney Chooses Christie MicroTiles For World Premiere Of “Electric Holiday” Window Display At Barneys New York

The world of high fashion comes to life in brilliant colors as multiple configurations of 425 Christie MicroTiles light up the windows of Barneys New York flagship store at 660 Madison Avenue, for their “Electric Holiday” display. A partnership between The Walt Disney Company, Barneys New York, and Christie, “Electric Holiday” is a multimedia presentation highlighted by a digitally-animated, moving art short featuring Disney characters Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Daisy Duck, as they strut the runway in original designer clothes. The short is the highlight of the high tech light show, accompanied by an original score by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino.

Following the world premiere on November 14, the eight-minute art short will continue to loop throughout the day on the Christie MicroTiles. The window displays will be up until January 3, 2013. Visit www.christiedigital.com/electricholiday to learn more about the display and if visiting over the holidays, post your photos on our wall at www.facebook.com/christiedigital.

“We are thrilled to be working with the experts at Christie on Disney Electric Holiday Windows at Barneys New York. Disney and Barneys wanted to create a visually stunning window display unlike any other and the Christie MicroTiles – with their high resolution, shallow depth, virtually seamless canvas and true-to-life image quality – made that possible. Utilizing 565 square feet of MicroTiles and 50 million pixels we are able to create a brilliant light and video show that will light up Madison Ave throughout the Holidays,” remarked Lylle Breier, SVP World Wide Special Events, Walt Disney Studios.

Christie MicroTiles Light Up Barneys New York Windows With Disney's 'Electric Holiday' Display

“‘Electric Holiday’ is a stellar combination of state-of-the art animation, lights, music, and fashion that will encompass eight windows of Barneys New York’s Madison Avenue store and represents one of the most complex combinations of shapes, resolution, size and depth of field ever used with the Christie MicroTiles,” said Sean James, vice president, Managed Services, Christie. “From the realization of the high-concept moving art short to the multi-layered arrangement of MicroTiles, it is a triumph of technical, creative and artistic vision never seen before on a holiday window display.”

Christie’s Managed Services team provided technical consultation at every stage of the installation, from concept finalization, to pre-staging, to on-site set-up, expanding on its long history of collaboration with Disney. Christie projection technologies have powered some of Disney’s most famous world premiere events, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “High School Musical”. Each window will feature an array of Christie MicroTiles in a staggered, multi-layer set-up of various shapes and depths, surrounded by bright meshes of lights that will be synchronized with the music.

Right Technology at the Right Place
The shallow depth of the display windows presented an especially daunting challenge, eliminating technology that required substantial space. Flat panels were considered, but their thick bezels significantly distracted from the display, which needed to appear nearly seamless.

Christie MicroTiles were the answer. Lightweight and shallow rear projection modules approximately 16” by 12”, they are less than a foot deep and fit perfectly in the store windows. More importantly, they have a nearly invisible 1mm gap between the tiles for seamless images and can be scaled to any size, shape and orientation, forming a digital canvas of the highest brightness and resolution. As well, with a viewing angle of 180 degrees, every view from the street offers “the best seat in the house”, regardless of where one is standing.

The Best and the Brightest
Harnessing the strengths of both DLP projection and LED technology, Christie MicroTiles offer substantially brighter images and a much wider color palette than conventional flat panel LCD and plasma displays. The result is a digital canvas composed of 425 MicroTiles in a combination of portrait and landscape modes, generating the equivalent of a 600 square foot image spread across 2,275 square feet of building. The complex design of the display includes:

• 565 square feet of Christie MicroTiles digital canvas
• 50 million pixels of resolution
• 15 simultaneous HD video streams
• 476 square feet of Traxon Mesh
• 600 feet of A-Deco Pixel strings
• five d3 Media Servers

“’Electric Holiday’ is truly a collaboration of some of the ‘best of the best’ in the world,” continued Sean James. “Achieving such a technological and creative triumph required a true partnership of trust among all the contributors. It represents the best in fashion from Barneys New York, the best in Entertainment from Disney, and the best in visual technology from Christie.”

VP of Christie’s Entertainment Solutions group, Craig Sholder added: “Christie and Disney share a long and successful history of collaboration, staging some of the industry’s most memorable multimedia events. Our latest partnership for ‘Electric Holiday’ continues in that tradition of success. We look forward to Christie technology, the Disney magic, and Barneys’ sense of fashion thrilling shoppers from around the world during the holiday season.”

Cobalt Digital CCW Plans Include Loudness Processing & Monitoring Over IP Demonstrations & MADI Card-Based Solutions

CALM COMPLIANCE DRIVES INTEREST IN INNOVATIVE, COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVES

Urbana, IL – With the deadline for CALM compliance looming, Cobalt Digital (www.CobaltDigital.com) has announced plans to highlight its award-winning easy-to-implement, baseband and IP/ASI solutions for loudness management, measurement and record systems at CCW 2012 to be held in New York on November 14-15. The manufacturer of 3G/HD/SD-SDI conversion gear will demonstrate winning LMNTS™, an exciting breakthrough in comprehensive multi-channel, transport-based loudness processing, and SpotCheck™, an innovative transport stream compliance monitor. Also on display will be Cobalt’s new MADI card-based series of baseband audio routing solutions for mobile environments, production companies, or any application involving multi-vehicle audio signal transport.

SpotCheck – Audio Loudness Measurement and Recorded Data Logging SystemCobalt’s SpotCheck®, a transport stream compliance monitor that takes the guesswork out of loudness measurement and logging, provides a easy-to-implement path to CALM compliance and maintenance. SpotCheck monitors an IP, ASI, or a transmitted over-the-air MPEG stream at the transmit (emission) encode point, and provides easy-to-use, convenient, long-term access to loudness records for all programming initiated from a broadcasting facility.

Segments can be searched via the intuitive display of loudness plots along with date/time-stamped thumbnails of the actual corresponding programming, or can optionally be queried and correlated using a database relationship with the facility as-run automation list. SpotCheck readily pinpoints all segments that are outside of CALM compliance providing documentary proof should an erroneous complaint appear. Ethernet control enables integration with facility IT providing long-term logging/thumbnail storage.

Requiring no breakout from the MPEG stream and not affecting the emission stream in any way, SpotCheck provides an easily integrated, facility-based, powerful solution for loudness records and compliance interrogation and verification.

LMNTS (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams)Winner of both TV Technology’s STAR and Broadcast Engineering’s Pick Hit awards at NAB 2012, LMNTS ™ (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams) represents a quantum leap in multi-stream loudness processing by offering an economic, consistent solution that’s easy to integrate.

LMNTS uses LINEAR ACOUSTIC® Aeromax™ technology and performs automatic loudness processing across many transport streams making it ideal for MVPDs and MSOs where a large number of diverse programming sources must be simultaneously controlled. It operates at the MPEG IP transport layer to provide a practical loudness management solution without the need or complexity of external codecs transferring between baseband and MPEG external interfaces.

Available in both IP and ASI versions, LMNTS extracts and decodes audio codec packets from the program stream, performs high-quality PCM loudness processing, and then re-encodes and re-packets the audio within its stream. Physically, all data connections to LMNTS are via GigE IP or ASI interfaces using an industry-standard IT hardware platform with no intermediary breakouts.

MADI CARDS – IDEAL FOR MULTI-VEHICLE AUDIO SIGNAL TRANSPORT
