Martin Audio MLA Compact Impresses At NYC and D.C. Demos

Martin Audio MLA Compact Demo Team

Martin Audio recently made a significant impression on leading theatrical sound designers, acoustic consultants, audio engineers and event production management at exclusive demonstrations for its award-winning MLA Compact loudspeaker system in New York City and Washington D.C.

The New York demo was held in the Grand Ballroom, Manhattan Center Studios, while the Washington D.C. demo took place in the Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University.

Both provided a unique opportunity for attendees to learn more about MLA Compact’s groundbreaking cellular drive technology while experiencing the exceptional coverage, dynamic audio quality and clarity of speech the system is known for in person.

Hosted by Martin Audio U.S. Director of Operations Rob Hofkamp, the demonstrations featured a detailed technical presentation by Research and Development Director Jason Baird and a live demonstration of the system including unique optimization techniques around hard avoid and non-audience areas. Over 100 people attended the shows and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Enthusiastic attendees came from as far away as Paraguay and Austria.

Layla Davias & Frank Portalatin

Commenting on the demos, Hofkamp said, “It was a pleasure to do these demos and receive such positive feedback on our presentation and the MLA Compact. The attendees also enjoyed the exceptional live acoustic performances from singer Layla Davias & guitarist Frank Portalatin, alongside full-bore metal recordings from Rammstein in excess of 110dB. Special thanks also to Jim Risgin of OSA and Mike Scarfe of MHA for their support of the NYC and Washington DC demos respectively.”

CCW 2013: Digital Nirvana to Show Live Stream and Broadcast Monitoring Software, Plus Content Repurposing Solution

Newark, CA – Digital Nirvana’s live stream media monitoring solution, broadcast monitoring software, and content repurposing system for multi-platform distribution will be front and center at the upcoming Content & Communications World Expo (CCW). Being held from November 13-14th at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, CCW is an annual convention focused on media and entertainment technology that includes HDWorld, SATCON and the Production + Post conferences.

Digital Nirvana will exhibit in Booth #1257 at the show.

“We’re very excited about CCW 2013,” said Hiren Hindocha, president and CEO of Digital Nirvana. “It’s a dynamic show that grows in popularity each year. It’s the perfect venue to present innovative technology. We’ve got a unique set of products that offer the capabilities and cost savings customers need now. We anticipate a very positive reception at this show next month.”

AnyStream IQ, the industry’s first live stream media monitoring solution, will be showcased within Digital Nirvana’s CCW booth. This cloud-based software-as-a-service helps broadcasters record, log and monitor live streamed media, validate ad runs, prove web captioning compliance, and cut clips for easy sharing. AnyStream IQ is designed specifically for the new streamed media monitoring requirements of broadcasters, content creators, aggregators and distributors.

Because it’s a cloud-based subscription service, there is no hardware or software to install. Users just specify the URL of the stream, and AnyStream IQ records the streams, extracts the closed captions (if any), and provides a browser-based interface to search the recorded streams. With its Cut/Clip feature, users can easily mark in and out points on the video and share the clip for either compliance or proof of airing purposes. AnyStream IQ complements a station’s current, in-house broadcast compliance logging system.

In addition to AnyStream IQ, Digital Nirvana offers an innovative solution for traditional broadcast monitoring. Monitor IQ is the only broadcast monitoring system that provides automatic ad detection, a director’s audio track, as well as an advanced metadata harvester™capability. Monitor IQ combines the functionality of content recording (HD and SD in full resolution), content searching, retrieval and repurposing, Web publishing, signal monitoring, air-check logging, archiving, ad verification and tracking, and competitive analysis while offering the scalability that broadcasters need.

The latest software includes several features that are a direct result of customer feedback. Among the new, customer-suggested features are: flexible content archiving, real-time newscast exporting, and automatic extraction of Program Guide data from the broadcast stream.

Because the platform is based on open web services (REST) API’s, Digital Nirvana’s software can be easily integrated with third party products and can scale from one to multiple servers and from one to hundreds of channels. All Digital Nirvana solutions are web enabled, so users can access the software through any standard web browser without ActiveX component.

The company will also feature its MediaProTM content repurposing system for multi-platform distribution, which offers a low-cost way to repurpose HD clips from cable and broadcast. This new solution records encrypted cable feeds in full HD and is ideal for news and sports directors who frequently repurpose content from cable channels. For the broadcast engineer, it eliminates the need to maintain multiple set top boxes, frees up valuable rack space, and removes the cost of multiple DVRs.

MediaPro IQ allows users to easily edit, clip and publish live or recorded content in real-time. Search is based on keywords, program titles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption, as-run logs, traffic logs, alarm and discrepancy logs and time/date or channel filters.

Singing Wells Records, Archives and Shares Traditional African Music with HARMAN’s AKG Microphones

Working to raise awareness and manage traditional East African music for future generations to listen, refer to and take pride in, not-for-profit group Singing Wells travels throughout the continent to capture beautiful melodies of the people of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and others. With a studio pair of HARMAN’s AKG C414 XLS reference recording microphones, Singing Wells captures the sounds of local musicians and offers young artists an opportunity to collaborate and incorporate traditional music into their own work.

Beginning in 2011, with a successful pilot recording in the coastal province of Kenya, Singing Wells (a collaboration between UK-based charity Abubilla Music Foundation and Ketebul Music) delivers engineers to help with audio and video recording during performances.

“The time we spend in the field must be used productively, so being able to set up quickly and capture as many high-quality recordings as possible was an important factor when considering microphones,” stated Andy Patterson, Singing Wells. “I’ve used AKG throughout my entire career for vocals, guitars, overheads and ambients in various studios and they have never disappointed.”

A matched pair of AKG C414 XLS is used on a stand to record in the field and have been featured on every recording Singing Wells has developed. From the vocals to the percussion and even the performers’ stomping feet, C414 beautifully captures the rhythm, soul and heart of the performers.

“The C414’s produce a reliable image and balance of the sound, which we complement with extra lapel and spot mics.” Patterson continued. “We are confident that in the event of failure of the other microphones, we will have an accurate stereo recording from the main pair of AKG C414 mics as a fallback if necessary. In such differing outdoor environments, I was worried we might suffer equipment failures, but the C414’s have never let us down.”

Singing Wells pays a gratuity to all artists for their recording time and in the event any money is made from the recordings, royalties are also paid.

“We see ourselves not just as archivists and seed collectors, but as cultivators and seed planters, helping to conserve and grow this magical type of performance,“ said Patterson. “The next stage in our project is to try and raise the profile of Singing Wells and the musicians we have recorded. We’ve worked with amazing artists, and anyone in any culture can surely appreciate and respect their passion.”

Snapped on the River Music Propels Forward with HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression Series

Production Company Snapped on the River Music recently invested in a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 1 console for use in the company’s support of live music productions. Joe Michaels, President of Snapped on the River Music, is a seasoned veteran in FOH and live production, and naturally sought a device that could mirror his decades of experience.

The Soundcraft Si Expression 1 is a versatile board that combines power and performance with a compact form factor. “I record the majority of my music in multiple studios,” Michaels said. “This little Soundcraft console allows me to travel without hassle between locations, and yet bears an amazing resemblance to its bigger counterparts due to the quality of the sound that it produces. Sixteen inputs are more than enough for my needs.”

Besides the mic inputs, the Soundcraft Si Expression Series comes fully loaded with all the features that artists and producers need, including but not limited to analog style digital controls, 66 processing channels, BSS® GEQ on every bus and the famous Lexicon FX processors.

When asked why he preferred the Soundcraft Si Expression over competitive consoles, Michaels replied, “The sound from this console is absolutely superior to others in its price range. I love the pre-amps and the Lexicon effects, and everything is so easy to use. Unlike other brands, which sound overly mechanical, the Si Expression sounds sweet, warm and happy.”

The company currently uses the console for local and national shows, while accommodating studio projects as well. The Si Expression 1 is truly a well-rounded console that can be deployed anywhere with minimal set up time. It gives ease-of-use a whole new meaning with controls that are digital, but feel like analog, due to its 1 Control = 1 Function feature.

Michaels added, “There is nothing in the digital realm that is both inexpensive and comfortable to record with. This is the first console I have bought that provides all that plus unbelievable results equivalent to $10,000 counterparts.”

Masque Sound’s Custom Audio Equipment Package Docks at New York City’s Vineyard Theatre for New Musical, The Landing

TheLanding_Frankie Seratch and Paul Anthony Stewart - Photos by Carol Rosegg

When The Landing, the first collaboration between legendary theater composer John Kander and gifted playwright Greg Pierce, arrived at New York’s Vineyard Theatre on October 3rd, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was on board to provide sound designer Nevin Steinberg with a custom audio equipment package for the new musical.

A beautiful and haunting new musical, The Landing comprises three thematically connected tales of desire, love and loss. Starring Tony- and Emmy Award-winner David Hyde Pierce, along with Julia Murney, Paul Anthony Stewart and Frankie Seratch, and directed by Tony Award-winner Walter Bobbie, The Landing is the recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award.

The Landing_Julia Murney and David Hyde Pierce - Photos by Carol Rosegg

In designing the sound for The Landing, Steinberg wanted to maintain a very natural feel. “The Vineyard is a very small, intimate theater, and the play itself is a four-character musical with a four-piece orchestra, so my hope was to create an unobtrusive amplification system,” he says. “Of course, speaker selection was very important. The speakers I chose for this production supply a very diffuse amplification. It’s just a little bit unfocused, and I find that in a small space that tends to work pretty well.”

Steinberg employed several speakers from L-ACOUSTICS, including the company’s 112Ps and 108As. “These L-ACOUSTICS models provide a very pleasing sound and a very wide dispersion pattern both horizontally and vertically,” he adds. “I knew that they would work well for this project, so I was very specific about what I wanted. As always, Masque Sound was happy to fulfill this request. We’ve worked on various projects throughout the years, and they’ve always been very supportive and attentive to the needs of the production and also to me, the designer. I really value my relationship with everyone there.”

One of the main challenges that Steinberg faced focused on where to put the musicians, since the Vineyard Theatre has no dedicated orchestra pit. To overcome this, Steinberg split the orchestra into two halves and placed them in the balconies on the house left and right side of the audience. He positioned the percussionist and piano player/conductor on one side and the woodwind and cello players on the other. While this is often not the preferred setup as it can make communication difficult, in the case of The Landing, it suited the style of the production very well. Masque Sound was able to assist this unconventional setup by providing each musician with an audio and video monitor, so that each player could clearly see the conductor and have his and her own audio mix.

Masque Sound’s custom audio equipment package also included an AVID SC-48 compact digital console, which Steinberg likes for its great routing and effects options. The orchestra is reinforced using DPA and Neumann microphones. Because the actors are continuously onstage throughout the show, each performer is double mic’d with a combination of DPA and Sennheiser wireless microphones. Masque Sound also provided frequency coordination for the 10 channels of wireless in use.

“One of the nice things about Masque Sound is that when there is a challenge or a budgetary issue, they are very quick to help solve the problem,” notes Steinberg. “They always offer good solutions, and having them as the rental shop on my projects allows me to focus on other issues and not have to worry about anything related to the equipment. They consistently do a wonderful job.”

The Landing had its world premiere on October 3rd and is slated to run through November 24th at the Vineyard Theatre, located on 108 East 15th Street in downtown Manhattan in the heart of historic Union Square.

Christie’s Premium Cinema Solutions Wow ShowEast Audiences with 4K Laser Projector, Christie Duo, Christie Vive Audio and Professional Services

Christie® today announced its ShowEast presence, reinforcing its position as the industry-leading, one-stop shop for all manner of exhibitors – art houses, multiplexes, drive-in and custom cinemas. All these exhibitors across the world turn to Christie when sourcing impressive technologies and unparalleled support and services with which to immerse their audiences in a premium cinema experience.

Complete Christie Vive Audio System

“Christie is the perfect choice for all their cinema needs, including projection and audio solutions, lobby displays and professional services,” said Craig Sholder, vice president of Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “Specific to ShowEast, of which we are a sponsor, exhibitors who were not able to take in our laser projection demos in Burbank, Beijing or Amsterdam over the past 12 months are in for a visual extravaganza, as we’ve brought one of our laser prototypes to ShowEast. As well, we will delight their auditory senses with the combination of Dolby® Atmos™ and Christie® Vive Audio™ systems.”

Specifically, on Wednesday October 23 at 9.30am in the AMC 19 auditorium, the Christie and Dolby 4K laser projection and audio technology demonstration will set new standards for image and sound presentation. Christie’s prototype 4K laser projector will be fronted by a RealD XL Cinema System and accompanied by Christie Vive Audio speakers and amplifiers configured for Dolby Atmos – a new audio solution that revolutionizes the experience of sound in entertainment – to deliver a premium cinema experience.

Christie leads the industry in the development of cinema laser projectors, having announced in August the supply and installation of the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema. Exhibitors will finally have the capability to show movies in 3D projected at 14 foot-lamberts, the standard brightness level for 2D presentations, but virtually impossible to achieve with a single projector for 3D on all but the smallest screens.

In the AMC 17 auditorium, Christie has installed two Christie Solaria CP4230 4K projectors in a
Christie® Duo™ configuration, fronted by the RealD XL-DP Cinema System and connected to a
Dolby Atmos system. Again, this configuration allows movies in 3D to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, a brightness level typical of 2D presentations but seldom achieved with 3D screenings.

Christie SKA-3D Cinema Processor

The combination of two Christie Solaria projectors and the Christie Duo integration kit is significantly less expensive than other branded ‘big screen’ industry solutions. With lower upfront costs, and no ongoing revenue sharing, Christie Duo is the global solution for creating an affordable, premium large screen movie experience. The RealD XL-DP Cinema System is a pair of matched left- and right-eye polarizing filters featuring a patented XL light-recovery technology. It was designed specifically to be used with dual DLP Cinema® projector installations having larger screens, typically greater than 65 feet wide (20 meters).

Christie’s Booth Showcases Choices for Exhibitors
Visitors to the Christie booth #915 will have the opportunity to experience the firm’s cornerstone digital cinema offerings, whose scope encompasses new formats and technologies, backed by turnkey service and support for all of an exhibitor’s operations.

On the product front, visitors can view and hear the merits of the Christie® Solaria® One, Christie Duo, Christie IMB™ and Christie Vive Audio offerings, the latter including the latest LA3, LA3C and LA3S suite of speakers.

A complete projection solution for screens up to 35 feet, the Christie Solaria One comes with a zoom lens, custom-designed Xenon lamp, and a Christie Integrated Media Block (IMB) with its own easy-to-operate Screen Management Software (SMS). The Solaria One is brightest in its class, since it projects 8000 lumens in the DCI color space, 9000 for alternative content and in its Solaria One+ variation, projects 9000 lumens in the DCI color space and 10,000 lumens for alternative content.

Also on display will be the long-awaited Christie® SKA-3D cinema processor, which makes alternative content – such as preshow advertising and content from Blu-ray Disc players, gaming consoles, satellite receivers, computers and multiple 2D and 3D sources – look and sound as spectacular as feature presentations. This powerful audio and video processor can extract the latest, high-quality, lossless audio from HDMI signals, such as Dolby TrueHD® and DTS-HD Master Audio®, for integrating into cinema audio systems. Christie SKA-3D is now shipping in North America and will be available globally next month.

Christie’s Managed Services Exhibits Service Solutions for Cinema
Christie’s Managed Services offer a wide range of options for managing cinema equipment including projection/audio systems and lobby digital signage. Exhibitors partner with Christie at every stage –from system design to staging and testing, onsite maintenance, remote monitoring and transparent real-time reporting.

A Christie® WeatherAll FHD551-W LCD outdoor display with multimedia will highlight eye-catching, in-lobby digital signage displays, including Allure Global Solutions’ digital box office, showing the latest movie trailers, as well as Managed Services’ expertise in designing, building, deploying and supporting a digital signage network that’s right for exhibitors.

Through video on a Christie FHD461-X HD LCD panel, attendees will experience Christie’s state-of-the-art Network Operations Center (NOC), which monitors and services more than 110,000 remote devices for studio and exhibition customers in more than 2,500 locations in North America and several locations globally including Australia, China, Mexico and Russia. The NOC’s combination of around-the-clock remote monitoring and services help to safeguard customers’ visual technology displays.

The Managed Services team will also have video demonstration of their customized turnkey boothless projection lift system as part of a complete customized solution.

Flexible Financing for the Home Stretch Digital Cinema Conversions, Courtesy of Scrabble
For independent theatres that still need to convert to digital cinema, Christie has established a joint venture with Scrabble Ventures LLC. This venture helps exhibitors finance, over time, the purchase of a Christie digital cinema projector, and has already helped many community theatres make the move to digital, including Viva Cinemas, Villagio Cinemas and the Totem & Roxy Cinemas. Scrabble representatives will be at their booth, #918, across from the Christie booth, to assist exhibitors in understanding their options to convert to digital cinema. ABS Celebrates Media Technology Expo Success in Seattle, Portland

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced the 2nd Annual Media Technology Expo (MTE) was successful in its Seattle debut and had continued success in Portland, Ore. Both sites attracted hundreds of attendees earlier this month, and the company is already making plans to present the event again in2014.

MTE began in Seattle on Oct. 1 at Fremont Studios, then relocated to Left Bank Annex in Portland two days later. Both locations included a full schedule of free educational seminars and an exhibit hall with more than 50 exhibitors. “I appreciated meeting so many vendors in one place,” said Jon Rauch, production administrator, Bremerton Kitsap Access Television in Bremerton, Wash. “Sometimes I have questions about new products that I just can’t find answers to online. Talking to a vendor in person solves that.”

Jerry Eichten, executive director, MCM Television in McMinnville, Ore., agreed the show was a good opportunity to connect with product representatives. “It helped our facility planning as we gathered valuable information about items we expect to purchase in coming months,” he added.

The exhibit hall featured a wide range of technology, including cameras, lenses, integrated production systems, shared storage and archive solutions, media asset management, media monitoring, and more. Educational seminars covered technical topics including 4K, wireless microphones, and streaming video workflows. The Seattle event also hosted meetings for the Washington Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (WATOA).

“MTE is always a great opportunity for us to share technology with our regional customers and the professional audio and video community at large,” explained Arco Groenenberg, executive vice president and general manager, ABS. “We were very pleased with the turnout in Seattle and plan to keep MTE as an annual event in both cities. Both locations attracted attendees from every segment of the professional video marketplace, and the feedback we received was very encouraging.”

“With technology changing so rapidly, education is more important than ever, but not everyone can afford to attend the major industry trade shows,” said Mark Siegel, president, ABS. “MTE provides hands-on product demonstrations and a free conference program so video professionals in the Pacific Northwest can check out the latest gear and stay current with industry trends.”

About ABS:

Based in SeaTac, WA, ABS (Advanced Broadcast Solutions) delivers customized, technologically superior solutions for broadcast, corporate, house of worship, entertainment, government, and educational facilities – from design and integration to installation and support services. Digital Nirvana CEO to Speak at SMPTE 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition

Session will focus on the importance of live stream monitoring

Newark, CA – At the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers’ (SMPTE) 2013 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, Hiren Hindocha, Digital Nirvana’s CEO, will give a presentation on the importance of live stream monitoring. The conference takes place October 22-24 in Hollywood, California.

Mr. Hindocha is one of the speakers in the session titled, “Evolving Technology for Broadcast Facilities – Part 2,” which takes place on October 23rd from 11-12:30. Mr. Hindocha’s lecture will focus on why live stream media monitoring is essential for today’s broadcasters and the ways it can be monitored.

As live streaming continues to grow in popularity, reliable live stream monitoring becomes more and more crucial. In the phases of the live stream workflow, many things can go wrong and compromise the user experience, yet broadcasters may not even be aware of workflow failure unless they’re monitoring and recording their live stream programming.

The benefits of live stream monitoring go far beyond quality control and analysis. Live stream monitoring, logging and recording also helps with compliance and ad run verification. New FCC web captioning mandates make it necessary for broadcasters to monitor and record their live streams to prove compliance. Additionally, online advertisers now demand proof that their ad campaigns ran as scheduled. The easiest way to prove ad runs is to monitor and record the live stream.

While networks are equipped with the necessary tools to monitor traditional broadcasts, they’re lacking the same for streamed media. Currently, when broadcasters do monitor streamed content, they do so with a labor-intensive, manual approach. The solution lies in a cloud-based, automated, scalable system that can reliably monitor the live streamed programming of broadcasters. Mr. Hindocha’s SMPTE 2013 presentation will delve deeper into these points and highlight the key advantages and methods of performing live stream monitoring today.

SMPTE 2013 is the premier annual event for motion imaging and media technology, production, operations and the allied arts and sciences. The three-day conference brings together decision makers from motion picture studios, broadcast and distribution networks, production and post-production community, software companies, systems integrators and others leading the evolving motion imaging industry. To find out more about the conference, visit www.smpte2013.org.
