Game Creek Video Trusts PESA for Routing Needs at Super Bowl XLVIII

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of professional audio and video connectivity, today announced Game Creek Video, an HD mobile production company based in Hudson, N.H., will use PESA video and audio routers for FOX’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, Feb. 2.

Jason Taubman, Game Creek vice president of design and new technologies, said 75 percent of the company’s fleet is in the New York area to cover the Super Bowl for various clients. The entire truck compound at the game will be connected through PESA video and distributed audio routing systems, he said.

FX, the five-truck production system, which includes five 53-foot expando trucks, is in place at the stadium for the FOX game broadcast. It includes a PESA Cheetah 512×1024 digital video router with embedding/de-embedding, along with a DRS 2048×2048 distributed audio router that supports analog, AES and MADI.

Liberty, on location at MetLife for FOX pre-game programming, includes a 53-foot production unit and a 53-foot graphics and support unit. The main truck features a Cheetah 384×720 digital video router, as well as a DRS 1536×1536 distributed audio router with analog, AES, and MADI I/O. “The whole world has not gone digital,” Taubman explained. “We need a variety of connection methods.”

Northstar, another 53-foot expando, was used on Jan. 28 for Super Bowl Media Day coverage at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., then moved to MetLife for FOX Sports 1 coverage. The truck includes a Cheetah 288×576 digital video router, plus a DRS 704×576 distributed audio router with analog and AES I/O.

The game will be produced in 720p HD, with 55 cameras and 24 six-channel EVS replay systems, plus frame sync sources, 4K composites, graphics, and a “host of new toys” that FOX will reveal during the broadcast, Taubman said. “It’s a pretty straightforward crosspoint matrix,” he noted, “we just have a huge capacity needed.”

Cirque du Soleil Relaunches Varekai as an Arena Show using BlackTrax

Streaming realtime tracking data keeps the lights on the performers

The Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai, which has been touring the world since 2002, returned to Montreal, Quebec in December 2013 for its re-launch as Arena Shows. The production team proposed to lighting designer, Nol van Genuchten the deployment of the BlackTrax realtime tracking solution from CAST BlackTrax Ltd for moving light tracking of performers.

Improving production efficiency

“As lighting designer for the very first edition of Varekai, it’s great to be working on it again as it evolves. With the new arena tour, Varekai is hosted at a different location each week and presents its own lighting challenges allowing me to adapt the lighting to ‘the arena’ of each new environment,” said van Genuchten.

“We introduced BlackTrax as an operational efficiency and cost saving tool as well as a way of calibrating lighting highlights to track performers on the stage area. BlackTrax works by accurately tracking people and objects using a proprietary infra-red sensor and a LED beacon that is attached to a performer giving positional information for X, Y, and Z coordinates.

“Using BlackTrax we placed a tracker and beacon and designated certain fixtures to track certain performers throughout the show. At each venue of the Arena tour, BlackTrax quickly calibrates moving lights making sure that the performer and high-res light beam control is used, and that the beam of light is kept at minimal width,” added van Genuchten.

BlackTrax enhances creativity

As well as significant recurring cost savings, BlackTrax became interesting as it gave van Genuchten and Varekai more creative control with lighting.

“With BlackTrax, I had a lot more freedom to create and place highlights on performers within the imagery and doing so in a way that I couldn’t have done with a traditional follow spot.”

FiberPlex MADI SFP Passes Optical to Avid During NFL Pro Bowl Sunday

It was a double pass for optical fiber at Sunday’s NFL Pro Bowl game at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, where copper cabling took a beating due to excessive moisture buildup from the rain.

“The issue with copper wasn’t noise for a change, it was water,” said Jeff Kang with Custom Audio, Kaneohe, Hawaii, which has been providing sound reinforcement for Pro Bowl for over 10 years. Fortunately, this year, Kang had contacted FiberPlex Technologies about a MADI-to-optic conversion box for his Avid Profile live audio console in order to run optical fiber across the stadium, and thereby bypass the problems associated with a copper run.

The FiberPlex FOI-6010 conversion box with MADI SFP/SFP+ (small form-factor pluggable module) on one end and multimode fiber SFP/SFP+ on the other makes it possible to run a fiber snake between the Avid FOH rack and a main stage rack about 650 feet away, something Kang wishes he had been able to do with a secondary stage rack 350 feet up field. The secondary stage rack connected through copper cabling was glitchy due to a steady drizzle of rain the day of the game.

“The problem was that it (copper snake) would constantly switch between primary and backup because of the condensation,” he said, adding that the optical run was unaffected by weather or noise – which was good, because he didn’t have a backup system. “That’s how much trust I put in these fiber systems,” commented Kang, who has two FiberPlex LightViper audio snakes that he uses for a variety of venues, including use as a 330-foot optical snake during the Pro Bowl game.

For Pro Bowl 2014, FiberPlex’s MADI SFP/SFP+ easily handled Avid’s modified MADI protocol for bidirectional 48×48 digital audio channels into multimode optical fiber supporting separate wireless mics, multitrack recordings, live band, plus a number of announcers and other sources that add to the mix of a typical NFL game. The remaining channels of the 64×64 bidirectional MADI capability are used for controlling mic preamps, metering, and for reading data on the Avid stage rack down field. (This is part of Avid’s modified use of the MADI protocol.)

Custom Audio is one of a growing number of sound reinforcement firms now using optical snakes for live mixing and other applications that require transporting media error-free and transparently over long distances. Setup requires only a few strands of fiber for the copper equivalent of a 40-pair, 500-pound snake, which is why Custom Audio’s crew was able to dismantle the system in record time after the Pro Bowl game. “My crew looked at me and said, ‘We got out of here two hours faster than we normally do,’” commented Kang.
