Christie Lights up “A New York Holiday” at Barneys New York

The “Empire State” meets state-of-the-art display technology from Christie® for a spectacular, fully immersive visitor experience this holiday season at the Barneys New York flagship store in Manhattan. Barneys and Christie have partnered again to bring back the traditional family shopping experience in a “bricks and mortar” setting, creating magical windows and an in-store gallery through the use of visual technologies. Inspired by music icon and native New Yorker Shawn “JAY Z” Carter, visual artist Joanie Lemercier and Barneys’ creative director Dennis Freedman, “A New York Holiday” is a series of unique windows facing Madison Avenue and an interactive in-store gallery brought to life by the latest generation of Christie digital display technologies. “A New York Holiday” experience is the ultimate demonstration of what happens when creative retail merchandising meets Christie displays and the company’s Managed Services’ solutions and technical ingenuity.

“A New York Holiday” will premiere November 20th, benefiting the Shawn Carter Foundation, a New York-based charity which awards post-secondary scholarships to students facing socio-economic hardships. Working with artist Joanie Lemercier and Mr. Carter, Barneys will utilize a wide range of Christie display technology, including projectors, Christie® MicroTiles® and Christie HD flat panel monitors, to create dazzling, multimedia events that completely envelop the customers in one-of-a-kind interactive experiences.

The third floor of the retailers’ Madison Avenue Flagship has been transformed into the BNY SCC Gallery, an immersive 1,200-square-foot space with a seamless 360-degree projection that utilizes projection mapping, exclusive content, lights, and movement, to transport customers into the world of New York. A 70-foot long “hall” with floor projection will guide visitors from the 3rd floor elevator to the Gallery. The BNY SCC Gallery Space will showcase limited edition products designed by Mr. Carter in collaboration with various designers which will be available for purchase.

MADISON AVENUE WINDOWS

Floating City
The retailer’s iconic Madison Avenue windows will mesmerize passersby and customers with moving content that demonstrates how light and shadow are experienced in New York City, incorporating the theme colors of black, white and gold. Among the highlights are a “floating city” projected upon a 16-foot-tall “rock” wall, which houses the viewing area for the projection mapped experience, and includes twinkling stars in a night sky and a slow-moving sunrise revealing the shimmering floating city – enhanced by a visual program that incorporates architectural language, changing geographical landscapes and climate (snow, rain) – all through dazzling 3D mapping technology.

Mirrors, Icicles and 3D lights
A large, abstract hanging resembling a rock or icicle formation will be covered in thousands of fragmented mirrors. With Christie projection mapping washing light over the formation to create a light show on the object itself, it will be reflected into the room as well as onto the window and finally the street.

Among the technologies used will be the Christie HD14K-M projector, Christie LW720, Christie LWU420, and Christie HD flat panel displays, including the new Christie WeatherAll flat panel.

A traditional favorite during the holidays will have a modern new twist, with a window housing the “BNY NYC Sleigh Ride” featuring a rotating cast of improvisational performers from Upright Citizens Brigade outfitted in modern Santa costumes who will take children on a virtual “sleigh ride” through an abstracted New York City. Through the use of experiential screens, the occupants will feel like they are up in the air and flying through New York. Christie WeatherAll flat panels on the outside of the window will show images of the children and “Santa” as they take the Sleigh Ride.

Christie display technologies will be featured in select Barneys regional flagship locations in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, where Christie HD flat panels will greet visitors and provide content to highlight the Shawn “JAY Z” Carter collection within that store.

Crabby Joe’s Makes A Bold Statement With 165” 3×3 Videowall Installed By Advanced

The owners of the newly renovated Crabby Joe’s at 276 Dundas St. in London, Ontario knew they needed to go big with their AV system to draw guests fromlocal competition. A videowall was their top choice for displaying major events and multiple events at once, so they went to the AV professionals at Advanced to design and install the biggest videowall that would fit.

According to Advanced General Manager of Systems Integration Omar Prashad, the installation gives Crabby Joe’s a sophisticated multi-display solution that is simple to control.

“At our initial meeting Crabby Joe’s owner Howard Pennell told us that he wanted something that would blow his guests away as soon as they walk through the door,” Prashad said. “We determined that the best solution was to build a 3×3 video wall that would allow them to show a single video feed or all six available video feeds at once.

“There was enough room for us to create a 165” videowall composed of nine 55-inch HD Orion display panels, and we installed a simple-to-use Crestron system to give them fast, easy control over which video feed plays on which display. We configured the videowall to allow for all nine panels to show a single feed, or to show the main feed on the four upper-left most displays while each of the remaining five displays can show the other five independent video feeds.”

To ensure the installation went according to plan and that the customer would be 100 percent satisfied with the result, the team at Advanced installed, configured and calibrated the videowall at their warehouse before the real on-site installation even began.

“Monitors need to be color calibrated,” Prashad said, “and LED LCD technology tends to work through most of its color shift in the first 10 hours. We like to get every installation right the first time, so we rig up each videowall we build in our warehouse and make sure everything is working and calibrated before the customer ever sees it. The last thing we want is to start hanging panels in the restaurant and find that one of them is defective. This pre-installation testing process allows us to sort out issues so the customer doesn’t have to.”
Pennell knew that not every AV company can pull off this type of installation. After deciding he wanted a videowall for the new restaurant’s grand re-opening, he researched companies in the area that specialize in large, complex AV systems, and found that Advanced had the experience and expertise he was looking for.

“I wanted the guest experience to be unforgettable, and I wanted the videowall to make a statement to our guests. Advanced delivered everything I could have hoped for, and I hope to work with them again in the future,” Pennell said. He added that while it wasn’t the lowest-cost option, the final effect of the videowall can’t be underestimated.
“The cost of the videowall was worth the effect that it has on passersby and guests once they enter the restaurant,” he said. “We could have simply hung a bunch of TVs on the wall, but this system has as much value as a marketing tool as an actual video display. London has the highest concentration of restaurants in Ontario, so we’re always looking for anything we can do or provide that guests can’t get elsewhere. The ‘WOW” factor when you see this videowall is amazing, and it really is the best place in town for people to catch all their favorite sports. People see it when they walk by our window, and then they bring their friends the next time they come in. Plus it’s much easier to use and stay organized with the Crestron system than having nine more separate TVs.”

Specifically, on Wednesday October 23 at 9.30am in the AMC 19 auditorium, the Christie and Dolby 4K laser projection and audio technology demonstration will set new standards for image and sound presentation. Christie’s prototype 4K laser projector will be fronted by a RealD XL Cinema System and accompanied by Christie Vive Audio speakers and amplifiers configured for Dolby Atmos – a new audio solution that revolutionizes the experience of sound in entertainment – to deliver a premium cinema experience.

Christie leads the industry in the development of cinema laser projectors, having announced in August the supply and installation of the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema. Exhibitors will finally have the capability to show movies in 3D projected at 14 foot-lamberts, the standard brightness level for 2D presentations, but virtually impossible to achieve with a single projector for 3D on all but the smallest screens.

In the AMC 17 auditorium, Christie has installed two Christie Solaria CP4230 4K projectors in a
Christie® Duo™ configuration, fronted by the RealD XL-DP Cinema System and connected to a
Dolby Atmos system. Again, this configuration allows movies in 3D to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, a brightness level typical of 2D presentations but seldom achieved with 3D screenings.

The combination of two Christie Solaria projectors and the Christie Duo integration kit is significantly less expensive than other branded ‘big screen’ industry solutions. With lower upfront costs, and no ongoing revenue sharing, Christie Duo is the global solution for creating an affordable, premium large screen movie experience. The RealD XL-DP Cinema System is a pair of matched left- and right-eye polarizing filters featuring a patented XL light-recovery technology. It was designed specifically to be used with dual DLP Cinema® projector installations having larger screens, typically greater than 65 feet wide (20 meters).
