FOR-A’s FT-ONE 4K Camera Awarded 2013 Government Video Salute, Used for NASA Space Launch

Cypress, CA – FOR-A’s FT-ONE full 4K variable frame rate camera was awarded a 2013 Government Video Salute Award. Presented by Government Video magazine, the awards honor the 10 most innovative products on the Government Video Expo show floor. GV Expo was held last month at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

In its GV Expo booth, FOR-A demoed the FT-ONE 4K super slow motion camera with its new 4K extraction system, the ZE-ONE. The company showed high-speed footage from the FT-ONE taken during NASA’s recent launch of the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft on a 10-month mission to explore Mar’s climate history. Capable of recording up to 900 frames per second (fps), the FT-ONE captured stunning 4K footage of the event with a FUJINON Premier 4K+ PL Cine zoom – the 75-400mm T2.8-T3.8 (HK5.3×75).

During his GV Expo keynote presentation, Rodney Grubbs, Program Manager at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, noted the FT-ONE’s performance in his discussion about 4K and NASA’s search for new technology.

“FOR-A is honored to have the FT-ONE recognized as one of the best products at GV Expo, an event where so many great technologies are shown,” said Hiro Tanoue, FOR-A Corporation of America’s President. “The FT-ONE is ideal in many different applications, from sports and broadcast events to rocket launches. We look forward to seeing innovative, new ways the camera will be used in the future.”

In Government Video’s announcement of award winners, the FT-ONE was described as follows: “If you saw the FT-ONE 4K Variable Speed Camera video that FOR-A showed continuously at GV Expo 2013, you would immediately know why the camera was chosen. Its stunning resolution and hypnotically smooth ultra-slow-motion turned a blast from a tank’s cannon into kinetic art.”

The FT-ONE employs FOR-A’s high-sensitivity CMOS color sensor, “FT1-CMOS,” and plays back full 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels). One output channel can provide QFHD (four 1080p 3G-SDI) outputs, while the other output channel provides down-converted HD-SDI for live viewing and play back. The FT-ONE captures images as uncompressed raw data on the system’s internal memory, which has a recording capacity of 9.4 seconds. This data is then stored on one of two hot-swappable SSD cartridges, each of which is capable of storing 84 seconds of full 4K resolution images at 900 fps.

Columbus Consolidated Government TV Builds New Control Room around Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – When Georgia’s Columbus Consolidated Government opened its new City Service Center in June, it helped address parking issues for citizens and more than doubled the capacity of the council chambers. For Columbus Consolidated Government TV, its local government channel, relocation to the new building meant a chance to upgrade equipment that had not changed in more than a decade. The new control room is anchored by a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 2000 integrated production system.

Located on the second floor, the control room is positioned between the council chambers and CCG-TV studio, with large observation windows in both connecting walls. With three wired drops in different areas of the City Service Center, as well as one at a new aquatic center across the street, the station can connect a camera, have it feed into the Granite, and go live with a press conference very quickly.

CCG-TV had been using an aging NewTek system, but Michael King, CCG-TV station manager, was ready for a change. “When I had the opportunity to upgrade, I immediately knew I was going to get a Broadcast Pix switcher,” he said. “We were behind the times, so we decided to update what we had. Broadcast Pix is the main catalyst behind everything that’s going on.”

The new studio includes two talk show sets, which are used for a variety of programs. CCG-TV produces about 14 shows a month, in addition to coverage of four weekly council meetings, committee meetings, press conferences, educational videos, and community event coverage. King has one part-time and one full-time employee, but sometimes borrows staff members from other departments to help produce programming. The station has multiple field cameras, two dedicated studio cameras, and two edit suites, plus an additional edit station in the control room.

To avoid bandwidth issues, CCG-TV has its own wireless network, and can use iPixPanel, Broadcast Pix’s iPad-based virtual control panel, to switch a show from anywhere in the building. “That is another good feature that we have with the Broadcast Pix,” King added.

During meetings, four new Panasonic HD PTZ cameras provide coverage of 10 council members, as well as other city officials and the public. King said the Granite is used to control all the cameras during a meeting, and camera presets are used frequently to simplify production.

CCG-TV uses many of Granite’s built-in workflow tools, including Inscriber CG and Fluent-View, its customizable multi-view. With Fluent Watch-Folders, each show has its own folder for clips, graphics, and other interstitials. “You don’t have to shuffle through a lot of stuff you don’t need,” King explained. “We do nine different programs. It keeps everything simple.”

About Broadcast Pix The leader in live video production systems with end-to-end integration, Broadcast Pix was founded in 2002 and has customers in more than 110 countries. Its Video Control Centers™ combine an integrated switcher, clip server, CG, and external control software with patented control panels, unique touch-screens, and exceptional displays. Systems range from compact systems controlled by touch-screen or voice automation to large sophisticated control panels. Extron XTP DTP 24 Twisted Pair Cable Receives HDBaseT Recommendation

Extron Electronics is pleased to announce that Extron XTP DTP 24 Shielded Twisted Pair Cable has been independently tested in an HDBaseT™ Alliance Recognized Testing Facility and verified to exceed performance requirements for recommendation by the Alliance. The HDBaseT Alliance’s Cable Recommendation Program helps AV installers to select cables that are engineered for optimum signal transmission within a twisted pair infrastructure. Extron XTP DTP 24 cable is specifically engineered to improve performance and signal path reliability with Extron XTP Systems, DTP Systems, and HDBaseT applications. The cable is available in both Plenum and Non-Plenum versions, and is certified to 475 MHz bandwidth at distances up to 330 feet (100 meters).

“When Extron got into the AV cable business many years ago, we quickly determined that off-the-shelf bulk cable didn’t meet our standards for performance, reliability, and durability, so we design all of our cables in-house,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “XTP DTP 24 cable is engineered specifically for digital video applications to provide integrators with absolute confidence in signal integrity throughout the largest distribution systems. While primarily intended for use with Extron XTP Systems and DTP Series products, the XTP DTP 24 cable can be used in any HDBaseT application for an additional measure of performance and reliability.”

Extron XTP DTP 24 cable is performance-optimized, 24 AWG shielded twisted pair cable specifically engineered to Extron’s exacting standards of performance. The cable utilizes an SF/UTP Shielded Foil/Unshielded Twisted Pair design for superior performance in digital video and audio distribution system applications and features 24 AWG solid copper conductors within overall braid and foil shields. Both Non-Plenum and Plenum-rated versions are available in spools of 1,000 feet (305 meters). To ensure end-to-end cable infrastructure performance, a line of matching shielded RJ-45 plugs, punch down jacks, and couplers is also available.

HPA Tech Retreat Celebrates 20 Years of Inquiry and Illumination

Industry Thought Leaders and Technology Mavens Head Back to Palm Springs for Thoughtful Exploration of an Industry in Transition

(Los Angeles, CA) For the past twenty years, the Hollywood Post Alliance(r) (HPA) Tech Retreat(r) has gathered a veritable who’s who in engineering, technology, creativity, and strategic business together for a structured yet informal meeting of the minds; where top industry leaders engaged in all aspects of production, distribution, post production, film, television, web and related endeavors, gather in an environment conducive to the exchange of knowledge and information. This year’s 20th Anniversary confab promises all of that and more from February 17-21, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells near Palm Springs, CA.

The Tech Retreat offers attendees the chance to explore the opportunities and the complexities facing an industry in transition, and to investigate new solutions and technologies that impact its many constituents.

The HPA Tech Retreat offers lively conference sessions, networking events and technology demonstrations to an engaged audience of participants and panelists that hail from a pool of the top technical, creative, business and hands-on experts. Topics will take the Tech Retreat audience from the nitty gritty to the very precipice.

For a full schedule, visit http://bit.ly/1cwt7B2. On Monday, February 17th, the event opens for early registration and a pre-Retreat course titled Physics, Psychophysics, and Vision for Advanced Motion Imaging from Charles Poynton and John Watkinson. Tuesday launches the HPA Tech Retreat, with the HPA Supersession: The New Normal is Anything But, focusing on the impact of new distribution platforms in production and post. Wednesday through Friday mornings feature breakfast roundtables where any industry relevant topic goes. The HPA Demo Room opens on Tuesday with demos and cocktails and is a hotbed of new products and technologies that feature curated and expert-demos which illustrate the latest developments. Wednesday focuses on the consumer experience and impact, and Thursday production and post. The Tech Retreat concludes Friday morning, with highlights and an emphasis on engineering. The entire event features many opportunities for one-on-one discussion with industry innovators, technology experts, business executives and other top professionals.

Mark Schubin, Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE Fellow has been working in television since 1967, writing about it since 1972, and chairing the HPA Tech Retreat program since 1997, commented on the engaging presentations set for next month. “We are dealing with fundamental changes in the very nature of our industry, from changing methodologies – broadcast, cable, DVD, DVR, for example- to the previously unthinkable, such as giving fans in a stadium access to their own instant replays, letting social media shape programming, and all of those things that lay beyond. This is a challenging but expansive time. For example, at the Tech Retreat, we’ll feature a presentation that may appear to be purely tech-focused and narrow (i.e., new display connections) but it will show how the consumer technology is powerfully driving the professional world. As always, we’ll be digging into important topics that are thought provoking, but are also important in terms of our businesses and careers, including two of the most critical issues in our industry: the change from video-specific technology to commodity information technology, and the question of what comes next on the screen, and what delivers the biggest bang for the buck?” Schubin notes, “Maybe it’s something a lot simpler than “4K.” He concludes, “And, we’re spending a day with a provocative dive into one of the most important topics there is – color.”

Leon Silverman President of the HPA noted, “This year is a significant milestone for the HPA Tech Retreat as we look back over the incredible effect that technology has had on our industry over the past 20 years. As the world of film and television became increasingly impacted by computer and digital technologies, the HPA Tech Retreat served as an important common ground for our industry to experience and drive transformative change together. Now more than ever, the Tech Retreat serves as an important bridge between so many of the rapidly changing aspects of our industry. As I do every year, I look forward to spending time with the most interesting people I know, and ones I hope to know, at the HPA Tech Retreat.”

Early bird registration pricing will end on January 10 and the Tech Retreat demo room still has a few remaining spaces left. For full information and registration visit www.hpaonline.com or call the HPA office at (213) 614-0860 or email Eileen Kramer – ekramer@hpaonline.com.
