ASHLY AMPLIFIERS PREFERRED IN THE MASKING SYSTEMS OF DYNASTY SOUND

HOUSTON, TEXAS – SEPTEMBER 2012: Leon Cortese is the owner of Dynasty Sound, a Houston, Texas-based company that specializes in providing sound masking solutions for buildings and offices both large and small. Cortese himself has been in the business for over forty years. Now his children and grandchildren work for Dynasty Sound, giving the company’s name a very literal spin. In recent years, Cortese has designed his masking systems using Ashly multi-channel amplification, often with integrated processing, citing its cost-effective pricing, bulletproof reliability, and flexible functionality, not to mention the affable Ashly staff.

“There are a few exceptions, but basically all we do is masking,” said Cortese. “Some people say that’s boring, but not to me. Every time someone says they need a masking system – which is common and becoming more common – my cash register rings!” Cortese has installed literally thousands of masking systems, and today, Dynasty Sound installs between 10,000 and 15,000 loudspeakers a year.

“In the old days, everybody had an office, which made masking much less critical than it is today,” explained Cortese. “Today, companies put people in cubicles, and all of their conversations float throughout that space. Masking serves two purposes. First, it alleviates the potential distractions caused by so many conversations, and second, it brings companies in line with privacy laws. It used to be that companies piped in music to create an ‘environment,’ but music is much more personal today than it was then. If you pipe music into an office of workers these days, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a large fraction of them hating what you’re playing.” In contrast, employees won’t argue over whether you should play pink or brown noise.

When he started out in the business, the amps that Cortese worked with were all tube-based. He has thus witnessed the tremendous technological advances that led to the modern amplifier. “There are several reasons why we only install Ashly amplifiers,” said Cortese. “First and foremost, they make one of the few eight-channel, two-rack space amplifiers that deliver greater than 125 watts per channel. Using the Ashly ne8250.70pe allows me to install twice as many loudspeakers, and I can avoid buying and installing a separate DSP by using the ne8250.70pe’s optional onboard DSP. It is a tremendously cost-effective solution.” Cortese reports that his company has installed between 400 and 500 Ashly amplifiers and that only one of them didn’t work perfectly right out of the box. “The people at Ashly are wonderful,” he said. “They are very easy to work with and are always ready to lend assistance.”

Every job is different and comes with its own idiosyncrasies and nuances, but they also share many commonalities. For example, a well-distributed masking system requires a loudspeaker for approximately every 144 feet, and except for where architectural concerns prevent it, Cortese places the loudspeakers above the hung ceiling. “Instead of pointing downward like a normal speaker, they point up,” he said. “That way the noise fires up, hits structure, and rains down like a sprinkler.”

Dynasty Sound most recently completed masking systems in the new 28-story building of Hess Oil Company in Houston. Delivering masking to every office space required 28 eight-channel Ashly ne8250.70pe amps and 10 four-channel Ashly ne4250.70pe amplifiers. “For that job, we mostly used loudspeakers that were placed in the sheetrock,” Cortese said. “With Ashly’s optional DSP tools built right into the amps, it’s very quick to install them, give them a quick EQ curve, and rock and roll.”

Now well into his 60s, Cortese shows no signs of slowing his active lifestyle, and his enthusiasm for creating functional masking systems has never been greater.

FS33 IR

Designed for use with the industry’s leading Night Vision Goggles (NVG), the FS33 IR infrared ReaLED™ projector from projectiondesign® is now shipping.

The FS33 IR is already deployed in some of the world’s top training and simulation applications for critical night-time training as well as bright and full-daylight operations.

The 2nd generation solid-state ReaLED illumination engine used in the FS33 IR projector provides users with 50% more light than any other competing LED projector further enhancing eye-limiting resolution. Even in pitch black it’s possible to locate light points from various light sources in the image thanks to its 0-100% light adjustments on the visual RGB display device. The projector’s high quality optics further increases eye-limiting resolution.

“Optics plays an important part for this projector as they are purpose designed for IR transmission”, notes Øyvind Svensen, Optics Designer at projectiondesign. “Projection lenses and optical design from projectiondesign ensure high quality imaging, enables easy colour matching, and optical alignment between channels. Additionally, the projector’s user-adjustable SRP™ Smear Reduction Processing virtually eliminates any smear or jitter.

“The FS33 IR is an ideal product for night vision simulation where a long life time, low downtime, and low cost of ownership is important. The combination of LED illumination and reliable DLP® technology ensures a lifetime of up to 100,000 hours,” adds Maria Dahl Aagaard, Product Marketing Manager at projectiondesign.

“The FS33 IR has a wide colour gamut, which gives very saturated colour and it is optimised to stimulate the different generations of Night Vision Goggles.”

A fully scalable and systems compatible projector, the FS33 IR is available in HD (1,920 x 1,080) or WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolutions.

All this is backed up by projectiondesign’s comprehensive warranty programme of up to five years.

The FS33 IR ReaLED projector is just one of the new product innovations to be demonstrated on booth #2448 at I/ITSEC 2012 between 3-6 December at Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida, USA.

The latest installment of WATCHOUT from BARTKRESA design

The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week celebrated its 25th anniversary with a poolside event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

WATCHOUT was used to manage video projections of the large predators as they swam across its 120 ft. wide poolside wall.

Bart Kresa, projection designer, BARTKRESA design has provided large-scale projections many times at the Beverly Hilton for HBO’s annual Golden Globes After Party. Those installations were notable for their intensity of colour and bold graphic themes, while this event required an equally complex but more naturalistic approach.

For this Discovery Channel event, Kresa employed eight WATCHOUT servers that blended multiple projectors.

The ability to manage the designs in layers enabled Kresa to present his hip, edgy graphics and animations.

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director at Dataton says: “Bart Kresa never fails to impress audiences and peers alike with his creative, immersive and innovative ways of using WATCHOUT, often pushing the WATCHOUT to new heights.”

WATCHOUT is supplied to events and staging projects through WATCHOUT Premium Partner for North America, Show Sage.

WATCHOUT greets visitors to Alexandria Center for Life Science, NYC

Colossal kinetic art display wows sciences and technology’s elite

Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image presentation software has been used by esteemed Niles Creative Group for a colossal 50 by 5 feet high digital video display in the foyer of The Alexandria Center for Life Science, an international hub for collaboration and innovation located the heart of New York City.

“Niles Creative Group were sought out by Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc to design a colossal kinetic art display that creates a spectacular and unexpected visual experience in the guest lobby,” says David Niles. “We designed the content delivery system and its respective technology to mirror the innovation in science and talent that the center provides.”

The impressive display is made up of 34 seamless LCD panels with content managed by Dataton WATCHOUT and servers supplied by Show Sage. Show control for the system is performed by Medialon.

“Since installation, the intuitive display has worked very well. We’ve designed the system so that it can turn itself on and off and it even changes and selects its own video content. Our expert engineers sometimes log in remotely to change content and even the client is using the system with a custom designed touchscreen interface to add local or staff information on to the WATCHOUT timeline if needed.” The actual marble wall that exists in the lobby was duplicated for the screen, so that when the display is in its passive mode it naturally blends into its surrounding environment. The overall content for the screen is abstract and artistic style and thematically centers on the “life sciences. All content was designed and created by Niles Creative Group.

“To manage the content, we’re using the conditional layer feature of WATCHOUT which allows content on different layers on the timeline to be switched on and off,” adds Niles. “WATCHOUT is packed full of features for multi-image display production and Niles Creative Group really knows how to use its full potential. The Alexandria Center is no exception,” says Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director at Dataton.
Jim Testa, President of Show Sage, the WATCHOUT Premium Partner in North America, adds, “Show Sage were on hand to provide Niles Creative with the expert local back up and support for this project and I’m pleased to say that the system has worked very well since installation, which is true testament to the flexibility and reliability of WATCHOUT.”

The Alexandria Center for Life Science – New York City is designed to foster unique and innovative collaborations among New York’s world-renowned academic and medical institutions, preeminent scientific talent, top-tier investment capital, and the broad and diverse commercial life science industry and to speed the translation of promising new life science discoveries “from bench to bedside.” It is New York’s first and only premier life science park in New York City and addresses New York’s need for state-of-the-art commercial laboratory space, allowing the city to capitalize on its unparalleled top-tier science, talent and capital.

New PreSonus Headquarters and Research Facility To Arise in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, August 2012… On August 22, 2012, PreSonus Audio Electronics, Inc., hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new high-tech headquarters and research facility. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal led the list of guests of honor, attending in recognition of PreSonus’ contributions to the state and local economy.

A leading manufacturer of digital and analog hardware and integrated software systems for the professional audio market, PreSonus has expanded from 49 employees in 2009 to more than 130 employees worldwide, including the 80 full-time employees who are overflowing its current offices on Florida Boulevard.  According to PreSonus CEO Jim Mack, PreSonus has grown its revenues by more than 50% last year and is slated to enter new product categories to continue its growth.

Designed by local architects Ritter Maher, LLC, and developed by Moniotte Investments, the new 44,000-square-foot building—located at 19151 Highland Road—will cost approximately $8.3 million including land and development.  Completion is expected in the late summer of 2013. It will easily accommodate at least 125 employees—crucial because PreSonus is continuing to grow and hire—and offers many amenities that are not available in the company’s current space.

Among the unique features of this building will be a specialized high-tech recording studio/R&D space that is being custom-designed for PreSonus’ engineering and testing teams by the award-winning Walters-Storyk Design Group of Highland, New York. The 2,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art studio will feature a control room, a 500-square-foot live-sound room, two isolation rooms, a video-production suite, five test labs as well as a separate 1,500-square-foot live-sound room.

PreSonus’ rapid growth, local hiring, and emphasis on digital engineering qualified it for LED Digital Interactive Media and Software Development tax-credits. This program supports the creation of quality digital-engineering jobs that stay in the Baton Rouge community. Historically, companies like PreSonus have usually located on the East or West Coast. However, the tax-credit program has helped make it possible for PreSonus to grow and prosper in its home city, investing these funds in new engineering staff and in research and development. Many of the new hires are highly skilled digital-hardware and software engineers residing in the Baton Rouge area.

Much of the engineering team graduated from the LSU Engineering Department, and the company was recently named to the LSU 100 Fastest Growing Tiger Businesses. PreSonus also is working with LSU in an effort to develop local design talent through the university’s outstanding engineering programs and internships.

August 22 marks the beginning of the next stage of PreSonus’ growth and its continuing contributions to high-tech employment in Baton Rouge. Look for much more to come from this vibrant company.
