It’s a first: TDC wraps Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylons in projection for Australian Naval Spectacular

Achieving the very first projection onto both sides of the epic proportions of Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House as well as onto the pylons of Sydney Harbour Bridge was by no means a small challenge for any technology company.

Australia was celebrating the first entry of the national Australian fleet into Sydney Harbour one hundred years ago and re-telling the story for The Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review. Imagination Australia was the Creative team and Producer of the event, who engaged Technical Direction Company (TDC) as their video technology partner.

An evening spectacular involved video projection that was combined with stunning fireworks launched from seven warships. There was lighting from 28 land and ship locations plus live action on board ships culminating in an aerial fly past from the Royal Australian Air Force that was enjoyed by the millions lining the foreshore.

“The spectacular was created in seven acts, from introducing Australia’s original fleet, through 100 proud years of service to Australia, current capabilities, a moment of reflection for the fallen and a finale to rival Sydney’s New Year’s Eve,” said Heath Campanaro, Project Director at Imagination Australia. “The show was a once in a lifetime project and will go down in history as one of the most inspiring, moving pieces of creativity at this kind of scale.”

We make it happen

Digital video projection onto both sides of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons was a first. To create such a visual spectacular, TDC worked for months of planning and testing with Imagination Australia to design and realise the brightest projection ever delivered.

TDC deployed a total of 56 Barco projectors including models FLM-HD20, HDF-W26 and HDQ-2K40 that were positioned at great distances and angles, including projection towers located up to 700 metres away from across Sydney Harbour. It was vital to that the projection was visible from all sides of the Harbour – which had not been done before.

TDC ensured that the content created by Imagination Australia was managed using Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and display software and 26 computer servers. The entire proceedings were synchronised by timecode and transmitted across Sydney Harbour using Reidel MediorNet fibre optic media signal distribution and processing.

“The project took months of planning and days of painstaking projector alignment and positioning to get every pixel lined up and just right across various projectors,” enthused Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC.

“Rarely does a project of this epic scale take place in Australia. Our team of projection experts did a great job and we’re very proud of what we’ve delivered,” said Michael Hassett, MD at TDC.

The TDC project team for this event were:

Project Manager: Kain Jones
Technical Manager: Olin Winton
Head Technician: Steve Cain
Projectionists: Drew Ferors, Matt Teale, Anthony Pellizzari, Isaac McKenzie
Projectionist Assist: Max Rowen, Gareth Marsh

The biggest event to happen at Sydney Harbour for years, The Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review was held from 3-11 October 2013.

Belkin Expands Award-Winning Secure KVM Portfolio with Secure Windowing KVM

New One-of-a-Kind KVM Switch Technology Ends Era of Manual Push-Button Switching Between Channels

PLAYA VISTA, CA Belkin, a trusted leader of technology solutions for office, classroom, IT infrastructure, and mobile environments, today announced the expansion of its award-winning secure KVM product line with the first-to-market Belkin Secure Windowing KVM Switch. The new switch delivers superior peripheral security for government and high security agencies by providing true data path isolation between systems and networks—the hallmark of Belkin’s Advanced Secure KVM product family.

Unlike conventional KVMs, the Belkin Secure Windowing KVM Switch requires no manual push-button switching between channels. The new switch enables simultaneous user interaction with multiple computers connected to networks with different security levels, using one mouse, one keyboard and one or two display monitors.

Traditional secure KVM switches allow users to work on only one channel or computer at a time. The new switch is the only product designed for environments in which the user needs to constantly work at and monitor multiple computers, with different security levels, simultaneously— without quality loss, latency, reduced colors, or dropped frames. Using state-of-the-art video technology, the Belkin Secure Windowing KVM allows users to fit up to four full HD sources on a single HD display.

The Windowing KVM is fully compatible with legacy (using Belkin Smart Cables) and new government systems, and is Common Criteria validated to EAL 4+ to assure the highest level of protection.

Additional security features of Belkin’s Secure Windowing KVM Switch include:

  • Advanced scaling function, allowing users to scale the video source x 1/2 and x 1/4
  • Two additional working modes: tile and scaling
  • Dual-display model, the ideal setup for high-end users
  • Easy customization of channels, colors, cursors, task bar, background, and more

“The new Secure Windowing KVM Switch brings the era of manual push-button switching between channels to an end, and makes simultaneous interaction with multiple computers a reality,” said Luis Artiz, director of product management, Business Division, Belkin International. “Like all products in Belkin’s award-winning Secure KVM portfolio, the Windowing KVM exemplifies our continued focus on improving workstation security, which pivots on true data path isolation between systems and networks. We will continue to advance our technology to meet the security requirements of government agencies, financial institutions, and other organizations that handle sensitive or confidential data on separate networks with different levels of security.”

Belkin’s Secure Windowing KVM Switch is now available through the company’s network of authorized channel partners.

Belkin delivers the necessary components for workstation security, as well as every essential accessory and peripheral device to provide a complete, efficient, productive workstation that meets the demands of government use. For more information visit:  Belkin Government.

AV, Big Data Optical Product by FiberPlex Singled Out for Award

FiberPlex CEO Buddy Oliver, center, accepts the Neutrik premierePARTNER award on behalf of the FiberPlex WDM-16 product team.

Optical fiber products are no longer toiling in obscurity. Among the heavyweights in the world of audio, video and big data transport is FiberPlex Technologies’ active wave division multiplexer, which was recognized last month for a coveted 2013 premierePARTNER Award by connectivity company Neutrik USA.

Of more than 50,000 Neutrik U.S. customers FiberPlex was singled out along with ten other professional AV equipment manufacturers for its product contribution to the growing fiber optic transport industry.  Among FiberPlex’s wide array of fiber optic products is its WDM-16 active wave division multiplexer used to convert audio, video and data signals to optical waveforms for transporting information and content over large, secure networks.

Increasingly, organizations with big data needs are networking systems through optical cable and products like WDM-16 because of fiber optics’ enormous bandwidth capacity, range, Fort Knox-like security and economies of scale. Neutrik USA makes optical connectors; FiberPlex and Neutrik USA offer optical solutions for a broad range of uses, from industrial to broadcast applications.

“FiberPlex is an important piece of the puzzle for fiber optics delivery because of its bandwidth-enhancing products, specifically the WDM-16,” says Neutrik USA Product Manager Fred Morgenstern, stating that only the most innovative companies are eligible for the premierePARTNER Award. “We consider this a very prestigious award. It is presented to less than 1% of the company’s USA customer base,” he added.

In addition to FiberPlex, Neutrik presented a 2013 premierePARTNER award (www.experience-neutrik.com) to Shure, EAW, Leprecon, Slate Media, Ashly Audio, BAE Audio, A-Designs Audio, Benchmark Media and TMB.

Unique among the winners is FiberPlex’s WDM-16, which is capable of multiplexing up to 16 3GB/s channels onto existing fiber build-outs in order to increase capacity on an OC-48 platform over just two strands of optical fiber.By multiplexing new bandwidth capability onto existing fiber infrastructure, WDM-16 effectively reduces acquisition costs to pennies on the dollar compared to the cost of installing new fiber optic runs with associated labor and conduit expenses to yield the same capacity gain.

“We feel very honored to get this award. It says to us – and to our customers – that quality and innovation matter,” says FiberPlex Technologies CEO Buddy Oliver.

FiberPlex makes a full line of fiber optic products for government agencies as well as for houses of worship, corporate facilities, broadcast applications, and K-12 and higher education. In addition to its popular WDM-16, FiberPlex offers its new FOI-6010 introduced earlier in 2013 as a universal SFP/SFP+ (small form-factor pluggable) frame that can interchange SFP modules for a variety of formats and uses, including interfacing singlemode fiber cable into existing multimode fiber build-outs.
