Haivision First to Achieve Common Criteria Certification for Video Encoders

Makito Video Encoders Support International Standard for Consistent Platform Security and Integrity

MONTREAL AND CHICAGO — August 14, 2013 — Haivision today announced that its Makito™ product line of video encoders achieved the Common Criteria certification, the international standard for information technology security. Haivision products, Makito, Makito Air, and Barracuda™, are the first video encoders to receive this certification.

Haivision’s Common Criteria certification allows customers to meet U.S. federal government and international information assurance and security requirements, such as the U.S. Department of Defense Information Assurance Certification Process (DIACAP). This certification ensures that program managers and IT staff can dramatically accelerate the time and effort required to acquire and deploy new solutions.

Led by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), a joint initiative of the U.S. Government’s National Security Agency (NSA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Common Criteria international standard ensures that products achieve a highly repeatable level of platform security and integrity.

Haivision’s Common Criteria certification bolsters the company’s strong history of supporting security requirements of U.S. federal customers, including the Certificate of Networthiness (CON) from the U.S. Army and an Authority to Operate (ATO) throughout the U.S. Air Force. In addition, the Makito and Makito Air were the first 1080p60 encoders certified by JITC, the Joint Interoperability Test Command of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Haivision’s Makito, Makito Air, and Barracuda low-latency, Common Criteria video encoders are heavily relied upon by federal and military organizations for mission-critical video applications. Makito encoders are recognized for their low-latency and high quality, HD full motion video (FMV) compression combined with Key Length Value (KLV) metadata support required by mission systems supporting both ground and airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

“Our goal is to continue to raise the bar for uncompromising security and integrity standards, delivering the most reliable solutions for our federal customers,” said Mirko Wicha, president and CEO of Haivision. “With our JITC certification and ISO achievements, Haivision has a strong reputation for delivering enterprise and military-grade solutions according to rigorous industry standards. This new Common Criteria certification continues that mission and ensures our customers have what they need to easily select and deploy solutions they can count on.”

Now listed on NIAP’s Product Compliant List (PCL), the Makito product line of video encoders were evaluated and accredited at licensed and approved evaluation facilities for conformance to the Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation (ISO Standard 15408). Certified Makito and Barracuda encoders are now shipping with firmware 2.1.1 and comply with the Common Criteria Protection Profile for Network Devices Version 1.1. The new firmware promotes consistent security practices and includes features to support platform integrity, administration auditing and event logging.

Shotoku Serves Up A Win For Tennis Championship Broadcasts

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM PROVIDES AUGMENTED REALITY FOR HIGH-PROFILE SPORTING EVENT

Staines, UK – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, recently facilitated the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) to BBC Sport for its live outside broadcasts of the Wimbledon 2013 tennis championships. Shotoku sales director James Eddershaw announced from the Company’s European headquarters in Staines, UK, that Shotoku provided BBC Sport with two TP-90VR and SX300VR Tracking Pedestal & Head systems for its temporary OB studio during its live outdoor coverage of the Lawn Tennis Championships.

AR was introduced on the first day of the tournament and continued to be used for every studio broadcast throughout the two-week tournament. The level of use and complexity of the graphics adapted as the tournament progressed, right up to the final day. In the UK alone, more than 17m viewers watched the men’s final broadcast.

It was Shotoku’s unique VR tracking technology that made transferring systems more typically found in permanent studio installations, into the temporary OB studio possible. Using highly accurate internal encoders to monitor all moving axes and combine with simple in-studio referencing technology, allowed Shotoku to drastically reduce the time required for installation and calibration.

“We are delighted to have been able to work with BBC Sport to help them deliver AR for the first time at an Outside Broadcast, especially at such a prestigious event as the Wimbledon tennis championships.” said Eddershaw. “We are particularly pleased with the reaction of the camera operators who used the equipment for the first time in an OB environment. Any changes to their normal operation came simply from working with the in-shot graphics, not the equipment.”

Shotoku’s recently introduced SX-300VR virtual tracking EFP head features precise tracking and uncompromised operation. Based on the popular SX300 EFP head, the ergonomic design with decades of extensive VR experience behind it provides a robust, reliable platform for a wide range of camera and lens configurations. The SX-300VR provides high-accuracy, real-time data output with absolutely no loss in manual performance. Like all Shotoku VR systems, the unit combines with the Serial Position Interface (SPI) for frame-synchronized high-resolution data tracking, compatible with all leading VR graphics systems. The head may be simply mounted on a tripod, or for real-time full 3D tracking, one of Shotoku’s VR pedestals such as the lightweight, 3-stage TP-90VR, used in this application. While both are typically employed for a range of studio configurations, the SX-300VR and TP-90VR proved to be robust, flexible and reliable in a challenging OB studio application.

IC Live Rings In North Carolina’s New Governor

Raleigh, NC – August 2013… For more than 170 years, North Carolina’s State Capitol building has served proudly as a centerpiece of the city of Raleigh, and a focal point of state government. This classic architectural masterpiece, its majestic columns evoking ancient Greek temples like the Parthenon, has been a gathering place for generations of events, both large and small.

With this grand building as a backdrop, Pat McCrory was recently sworn in as the 74th Governor of North Carolina. Despite the familiar setting, McCrory’s inauguration was the first to take place on the Capitol’s South Lawn, with the stage looking out down Fayetteville Street, a vibrant thoroughfare that serves as Raleigh’s ceremonial center.

With highly reflective marble buildings lining both sides of the street, the setting presented some daunting obstacles to speech intelligibility. “We were really concerned about the location,” says Allin Foulkrod, President of Creative Visions. “It was a big challenge to reduce slap off the marble buildings, while ensuring great quality sound for all the areas we needed to provide it for.”

To ensure that the attention remained squarely on Gov. McCrory, and not the sound system, Creative Visions selected the Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC Live steerable array. Two pairs of IC Live speakers were deployed on each side of the stage, creating an extremely low-profile system that delivered every word of the inauguration with complete clarity.

“We looked at a number of different speakers, and IC Live were absolutely the best solution,” says Foulkrod. “The magic of the IC Live is that they have an incredibly low profile, and they are ground-supported. It was crucial for the TV shots that the ceremony not look technology-heavy – if you fly major speaker arrays it takes away from this, for obvious reasons.”

The low-profile, tightly controlled sound, and high output of the IC Live allowed Creative Visions to fire them directly down a crowded street lined with reflective buildings, delivering sound cleanly to the audience while being almost invisible. “With IC Live, the speakers literally disappeared,” says Foulkrod. “I produced the show, but when I went back and looked at pictures I had a difficult time finding where the speakers were in the press shots. That is an amazing thing, having been in the business for 24 years, to see something vanish like that into a crowd of thousands.”

Foulkrod points out that no additional near fields or other fill speakers were required to deliver full sound coverage to the audience of thousands. “We were just shocked by the results, we were so pleased,” he says. “The sound was fantastic – crystal clear, and with beautiful articulation. The comment made by the #1 TV station in town was, ‘This was a production designed for television.’ It’s the best one they have seen in years.”

Extron Introduces Three Input Switcher with Integrated DTP Transmitter

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the DTP T USW 233, a three input switcher for sending HDMI or analog video, audio, and control up to 230 feet (70 meters) over a single CATx cable to an Extron DTP 230 receiver. It is HDCP compliant and provides two HDMI inputs, one RGBHV or component video input, and one DTP 230 twisted pair output. The analog signals are digitized to ensure a high quality digital video signal is transmitted to the DTP 230 receiver. The switcher also offers many integrator-friendly features, such as EDID Minder, auto-switching between inputs, audio input assignment, and remote powering. These features plus the low profile enclosure make the DTP T USW 233 ideal for discreet placement in lecterns, beneath tables, or in other locations.

“Integrators and consultants are often challenged to find the ideal products that meet the connectivity requirements at the conference table or lectern,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “The DTP T USW 233 combines digital and analog AV switching with twisted pair extension into one compact product that simplifies the installation and design of most installations.”

The DTP T USW 233 provides reliable switching and transmission of HDMI signals, supporting Deep Color up to 12-bit and embedded HD lossless audio formats. For simplified operation, the DTP T USW 233 can automatically switch between the digital and analog sources. In addition, the analog audio input can be assigned to any of the three video inputs, or it can be set to follow the input switch. To simplify integration of sources and displays, the switcher features two Extron-exclusive technologies: EDID Minder and Key Minder. EDID Minder manages EDID communication between the display device and input sources to ensure that the correct video formats are displayed reliably. For HDMI signals with protected content, Key Minder authenticates and maintains continuous HDCP encryption between input and output devices to ensure quick and reliable switching.

The switcher includes an RS-232 and IR insertion port, enabling simultaneous transmission of bidirectional RS-232 and IR signals from a control system using the same twisted pair cable that transmits video and audio. For added installation flexibility, a single external power supply can be used to remotely power the DTP T USW 233 transmitter or a DTP 230 receiver over the twisted pair cable. The DTP T USW 233 offers convenient control options, including front panel control, RS-232, and contact closure with tally output for easy integration into a variety of environments.
