Extron Introduces 800 Watt ENERGY STAR® Qualified Power Amplifiers

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the new XTRA™ Series XPA 4002 two channel power amplifier. This compact 1U, convection cooled amplifier delivers 400 watts rms per channel, and is available in low impedance and 70 volt versions. The XPA 4002 is an ENERGY STAR® qualified amplifier with an Extron exclusive, highly efficient, advanced Class D amplifier design. It also features patented CDRS™ – Class D Ripple Suppression technology that provides a smooth, clean audio waveform and an improvement in signal fidelity over conventional Class D amplifiers. The XPA 4002 is half the size of comparable amplifiers, conserving rack space and weighing only 9 lbs (4 kg). The Extron exclusive, high efficiency design generates very little heat and allows the amplifier to be convection cooled.

“The XPA 4002 is our newest ENERGY STAR qualified amplifier that delivers a unique combination of high power output and very efficient operation,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “It is ideal for driving high powered speaker cabinets or a large quantity of distributed speakers in large spaces such as auditoriums and houses of worship, while consuming less energy, running cooler, and taking up less space than competitive models.”

The XPA 4002 features an auto power-down feature that automatically places the amplifier into standby after a period of inactivity, and consumes 30 watts or less when idle and less than 1 watt in standby mode. It also has an ultra low inrush current draw to prevent power circuit overload that occurs when multiple amplifiers are switched on simultaneously. This feature eliminates the need for power sequencing in systems with multiple amplifiers in large centralized equipment racks, and prevents other equipment from experiencing power interruption from associated power surges. Additionally, the XPA 4002 amplifier features very low thermal dissipation under full load, which keeps racks and equipment cabinets cool.

FSR Builds a Bigger (Ceiling) Box

Woodland Park, NJ • FSR, manufacturer of audio and video switching, control products, and connectivity boxes, has announced the launch of a new ceiling box with a deeper design developed to accommodate applications requiring more internal equipment than the CB-12 and CB-22 models.

“The CB-224 is the largest unit in our popular CB Ceiling enclosure series,” commented Jan Sandri, FSR’s president. “Its capacity to support 50 pounds for a projector, and 12 pounds on each shelf makes it ideal for any venue requiring a robust ceiling mount.”

The unit is a perfect fit for conference centers, schools, meeting and training facilities, airports and museums. Its advanced deep box design has a pull-down 4 RU cage with gas-spring assisted ball-bearing slide. 2 RU of angle-adjustable rack-mounting surfaces on either end of the cage facilitate mounting and visibility of 1RU/2RU patch panels. 1-3/8” of clear space on both sides allows for wire bundles to traverse parallel to the cage after installation. Each side of the box has an edge-protected bundled cable inlet cavity, filled with flame retardant foam seal. The interior of the CB-224 is complete with 5 internal outlets, 1 external outlet, and a fan.

The CB-224 ceiling box is available in 4 versions: with or without a pole-mount for a projector, and both with or without “smart” electronics. The Smart Module brings Green Energy savings to the Ceiling Box by turning power on and off to non-critical equipment based on the current being drawn by the projector. In effect, when the projector is shut down, the non-critical devices in the ceiling box are power off as well, and when the projector is powered on, so are the other devices. This reduces the amount of power being consumed by the room when it is not in use.

The CB-224 is ETL listed and has approvals for safety (UL 60950-1) and visible smoke (UL-2043). Units are currently shipping.

Technomad and Electrocom Revitalize Stadium Audio at Historic Tacoma High Schools

BOSTON, January 5, 2012 — Two illustrious high school stadiums in the Tacoma Public Schools system enjoyed vastly improved sound for the 2011 football season, thanks to comprehensive distributed audio system upgrades at both locations.

Lynwood, Washington-based systems integration firm Electrocom managed the upgrades, installing Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers and high-powered amplifiers among other components at Stadium High School and Lincoln High School. Electrocom handpicked the systems to replace aging horn components that were in disrepair and bleeding into adjacent neighborhoods — prompting a flurry of complaints.

The stadiums’ long, rich histories are evident in their grandeur: large, bowl-shaped venue designs with concrete bleachers and expansive sideline space. This made sound improvements — especially even, venue-wide coverage — unusually challenging.

“These are not typical press box installations where we mount and blast away,” said Matt Wright, project manager at Electrocom. “We positioned narrow-dispersion loudspeakers at multiple points, with enough SPL, or sound pressure, to cover the distance of the field in some cases. We also needed a wireless amplifier solution at each stadium to remain under budget. It would have been expensive and complicated to run wires the length of the field and trench into the concrete.”

Technomad PowerChiton4 high-power amplifiers provide the wireless solution for pole-mounted loudspeakers on the visitor sidelines at each stadium. The IP66-rated amplifiers offer a waterproof design for outdoor audio, and a compact, modular form factor for greater proximity to loudspeakers. The 1600-watt amplifiers also pack plenty of power for loud stadium environments.

Wright adds that Technomad loudspeakers provide exceptional audio quality and are among the best at containing audio within the confines of a stadium or similar venue. “The end users are very happy with the audio quality,” he said. “The Technomad systems have improved intelligibility and increased audio isolation from the neighbors at both stadiums.”

Electrocom installed Berlin 9040 and 6040 narrow-dispersion loudspeakers at both stadiums. All Stadium High School loudspeakers mount to four large steel light poles — two above and behind the home side bleachers, and two above and behind the visitor side. Each home side pole supports two Berlin 9040 loudspeakers aimed toward the front row at a steep angle to cover the audience. One Berlin 6040 aims outward to cover the field.

One visitor-side pole supports two Berlin 9040 loudspeakers powered by a Technomad PowerChiton4 amplifier and RF solution to cover one end of the bleachers. A second pole supports two Berlin 9040 loudspeakers and a PowerChiton4 for the near bleachers; and a single Berlin 6040 with a dedicated PowerChiton4 amplifier to cover an extension of the bleacher away from the cluster. Allen PoleStar mounting hardware supports all loudspeakers.

A mix of Berlin 6040 and 9040 loudspeakers cover the Lincoln High School field from three locations behind the home bleachers, including the end zones for audio during track and field events. Berlin 6040s and PowerChiton4 amplifiers cover the visitor side from the front corners of the bleachers.

“These are among the largest stadiums we’ve done and there were plenty of challenges,” said Wright. “Technomad loudspeakers provide high-quality audio, high-frequency intelligibility and strong SPL along with a weatherproof design. And the PowerChiton amplifiers provided a way to get audio to difficult places without being cost-prohibitive.”
