Laser Projection Summit Kicks off NAB
Don Shaw, Ph.D. and senior director of product management, Entertainment Solutions, Christie, will participate in the “Technology Summit” on Cinema at 5:00 p.m. April 5 as part of the ‘Laser Illuminated Projectors’ panel discussion. The presentation will show how 3D light levels, color fidelity, image uniformity, viewing comfort, and a sense of immersion can be vastly improved using a 6P laser projection system, especially when combined with advanced color separation technology like Dolby 3D®, versus the conventional 3D systems found in cinemas today.

6P Laser Presentation at Christie Innovation Theater
The Christie Innovation Theater will demonstrate a 4K Christie Solaria 6P laser system using the world’s most efficient 3D technology and the industry-preferred image quality that doesn’t require a silver screen. Sure to be a show highlight, the 6P laser presentation provides a glimpse into the future of projection technology. Utilizing six specific primary colors, Christie laser projection technology brings dramatically improved 3D efficiency to projection systems and is ideal for any 3D display system.

The demonstration will use Dolby® 3D glasses specifically engineered to match the six primary laser light wavelengths and viewers will experience 3D Cinema as it was meant to be seen.

The Christie D4K2560 3-chip DLP® projector with the Christie TrueLife™ 4K platform will be showcased. When uncompromising image fidelity, brightness and resolution are needed in cinematic settings, amusement parks, casinos, or 3D visualization systems, the Christie D4K2560 is the clear choice; providing four times the resolution of 2K along with 60Hz.

A Christie broadcast set complete with Christie® MicroTiles® and content driven by the Christie Spyder X20 video processor will also be featured along with the North American debut of the Christie FHD651-T intuitive touch flat panels. AMSTERDAM (NL) / ISE 2014 — (February 4 2014): In a significant development for users of Audinate’s Dante media networking technology, Symetrix has announced that the latest version of its popular SymNet Composer software will enable complete configuration of select Dante-enabled Symetrix, Attero Tech and Stewart Audio products.
 
Settings affecting I/O levels, routing and more will be defined with SymNet Composer 2.0, which gives customers the ability to consolidate operations on a single platform where three or more were previously required.

Cirque du Soleil Relaunches Varekai as an Arena Show using BlackTrax

Streaming realtime tracking data keeps the lights on the performers

The Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai, which has been touring the world since 2002, returned to Montreal, Quebec in December 2013 for its re-launch as Arena Shows. The production team proposed to lighting designer, Nol van Genuchten the deployment of the BlackTrax realtime tracking solution from CAST BlackTrax Ltd for moving light tracking of performers.

Improving production efficiency

“As lighting designer for the very first edition of Varekai, it’s great to be working on it again as it evolves. With the new arena tour, Varekai is hosted at a different location each week and presents its own lighting challenges allowing me to adapt the lighting to ‘the arena’ of each new environment,” said van Genuchten.

“We introduced BlackTrax as an operational efficiency and cost saving tool as well as a way of calibrating lighting highlights to track performers on the stage area. BlackTrax works by accurately tracking people and objects using a proprietary infra-red sensor and a LED beacon that is attached to a performer giving positional information for X, Y, and Z coordinates.

“Using BlackTrax we placed a tracker and beacon and designated certain fixtures to track certain performers throughout the show. At each venue of the Arena tour, BlackTrax quickly calibrates moving lights making sure that the performer and high-res light beam control is used, and that the beam of light is kept at minimal width,” added van Genuchten.

BlackTrax enhances creativity

As well as significant recurring cost savings, BlackTrax became interesting as it gave van Genuchten and Varekai more creative control with lighting.

“With BlackTrax, I had a lot more freedom to create and place highlights on performers within the imagery and doing so in a way that I couldn’t have done with a traditional follow spot.”

“The BlackTrax software interface is very well developed and the physical practicality of creating trackable LEDs and beacons worked well. What’s more, BlackTrax is supported by a very good technical team at CAST that were there to assist us with any queries we had.”

Shaping a Better World: Arup Deploys Pexip Globally

Large-scale enterprise-wide videoconferencing connects professionals

Independent professional services firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, Arup have deployed the Pexip® Infinity scalable software platform worldwide. The deployment will enable Arup’s 11,000 staff across 38 countries to use high definition video, voice and data collaboration and will also be used to connect to Arup’s clients.

Pexip ensures simplicity meets functionality

“Initially, within our proof of concept for next generation virtual meeting rooms, we were evaluating bridging solutions from three different vendors. However, we found these to be more complex than needed – they also required proprietary hardware and could not achieve satisfactory interoperability and HD video integration with Microsoft® Lync. Pexip Infinity was brought in through a revised vendor list. It met our requirements for a software-only solution and we had it working globally in less than two hours. We were really impressed,” explained Chris Ellen, Unified Messaging Team Lead at Arup.

Arup were traditionally using Cisco Jabber™ but wanted to extend their mobile video portfolio by introducing Microsoft Lync. “Using Pexip Infinity means you can dial in and use the same PC or device for a video call but at increased quality. We don’t have to license additional software clients either which is an attractive value proposition,” explained Ellen.

Video conferencing for today and beyond

Arup staff are issued with a personal Virtual Meeting Room with a PIN number for security. Individual users can control their conferences and view presentations from their own mobile phone or tablet.

“Our existing video infrastructure was physically restricted by the number of hardware boxes in our network. With Pexip Infinity, there’s no restriction on the number of people that can use the system. The platform is always on and always available, which enables the team to connect instantly whenever collaboration is required in their workflow,” said Ellen.

“Unlike traditional DSP-based MCU’s, Pexip’s conferencing nodes are virtual machines that can sit on either a VMware® or Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure making use of standard server architecture. For Arup, minimal to no investment is required to start deploying the solution as we can utilize existing infrastructure. Being virtual also means conferencing capacity can be increased within minutes and the platform is inherently redundant.”

Arup intend to extend the solution to incorporate client meetings. “We can now use the Pexip WebRTC functionality for external meeting participants. In the past we had to ship a copy of Cisco Jabber™ and provision a user account. This was cumbersome for everyone involved, it introduced a delay and had a cost attached to it. With Pexip Infinity we now just email a URL and external callers can experience professional quality video via their web browser,” explained Ellen.

“As an early adopter of Infinity, we have been involved in beta testing and providing feedback directly to the Pexip development team. The openness we enjoy with Pexip is refreshing and it helps us to plan for the future. Pexip Infinity is a good strategic fit for Arup.”
