Torus Power to feature three premier power conditioning lines at Integrated Systems Europe 2014; The AVR2 Series, the new TOT Series and the RM Series are now available for international sales and distribution

TORONTO, ON, CANADA and AMSTERDAM RAI, NL (ISE 2014 Stand #5-R128) – Feb. 3, 2014 – Torus Power, a subsidiary of Plitron Manufacturing, will be showcasing a variety of its popular and versatile power conditioners at ISE 2014, including the premiere AVR2 Series, the popular and newly-expanded TOT Series, and the original RM series. Torus Power’s line of reliable, affordable toroidal isolation power conditioners provide clean, protected power to custom audio video installations of nearly any size or configuration. Used in residential and commercial applications to significantly improve sound and video quality and performance, Torus Power products are available with North American or International outlets for use in Continental Europe, UK, Asia, and Australia, and the line meets both IEC and Neutrik standards. Shelf, rack and wall mount configurations are available throughout the line for added versatility.

The AVR2 Series is Torus Power’s top-end toroidal isolation power conditioning and surge suppression solution. Designed for large-scale custom installations such as studios, consumer home theatre and audio system installations, and other mission-critical applications, the International AVR2 Series features two (2) models: the AVR2 8 CE and AVR2 16 CE. Both provide enhanced Ethernet (IP) control and monitoring functionality in addition to automatic voltage regulation, automatic reboots, versatile scheduling options, and individually addressable outlet zones. These models come in 3U and 4U chassis sizes with 5 or 8 outlets and 8A or 16A Output Current Ratings respectively, with either 220V or 240V Input Voltages, all of which readily accommodates a wide range of residential or commercial applications.

The TOT Series, now offered in two models, the TOT Mini (3A and 7A) and the TOT Max (15A), expands the Torus Power lineup to include an affordable entry-level price point that also delivers highly effective power conditioning. Employing Plitron toroidal isolation transformers and NBT noise filtering technology, the TOT Series restores incoming power to its clean original state and protects valuable systems from voltage sags, brownouts and surges. TOT also provides very low source impedance to connected devices, enabling high current delivery – up to the rated current limit – on an instantaneous basis; ensuring dynamic components are never starved for power. TOT Mini is suitable for providing Torus isolated power to components such as digital projectors, flat panels, powered speakers, media or source players, processors, and network devices. TOT Max features a larger capacity toroidal transformer and can be used with most audio systems and mid-power amplifiers.

The RM Series, Torus Power’s original line of reliable, affordable power conditioners have been providing clean, protected power to custom audio video installations for years. Available in a variety of configurations for North American and International use, RM Series models include the RM 8 CE and RM 16 CE. RM 8 CE is an 8A model and RM 16 CE is a 16A model; both are available with either 220V or 240V Input and Output Voltage, with 5 and 8 outlets, and 3U to 4U chassis sizes respectively to accommodate shelf, rack or wall mount applications. Torus Power RM Series toroidal isolation power conditioners are suited for a variety of installations from simple front-end systems to complex custom installations.

Showcasing a variety of versatile and technologically unrivaled power conditioning solutions for residential or commercial applications, Torus Power will exhibit at ISE 2014 in stand # 5-R128 with RGB Audio Visual Inc., a leading UK-based distributor of custom AV systems and components.

Cirque du Soleil Relaunches Varekai as an Arena Show using BlackTrax

Streaming realtime tracking data keeps the lights on the performers

The Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai, which has been touring the world since 2002, returned to Montreal, Quebec in December 2013 for its re-launch as Arena Shows. The production team proposed to lighting designer, Nol van Genuchten the deployment of the BlackTrax realtime tracking solution from CAST BlackTrax Ltd for moving light tracking of performers.

Improving production efficiency

“As lighting designer for the very first edition of Varekai, it’s great to be working on it again as it evolves. With the new arena tour, Varekai is hosted at a different location each week and presents its own lighting challenges allowing me to adapt the lighting to ‘the arena’ of each new environment,” said van Genuchten.

“We introduced BlackTrax as an operational efficiency and cost saving tool as well as a way of calibrating lighting highlights to track performers on the stage area. BlackTrax works by accurately tracking people and objects using a proprietary infra-red sensor and a LED beacon that is attached to a performer giving positional information for X, Y, and Z coordinates.

“Using BlackTrax we placed a tracker and beacon and designated certain fixtures to track certain performers throughout the show. At each venue of the Arena tour, BlackTrax quickly calibrates moving lights making sure that the performer and high-res light beam control is used, and that the beam of light is kept at minimal width,” added van Genuchten.

BlackTrax enhances creativity

As well as significant recurring cost savings, BlackTrax became interesting as it gave van Genuchten and Varekai more creative control with lighting.

“With BlackTrax, I had a lot more freedom to create and place highlights on performers within the imagery and doing so in a way that I couldn’t have done with a traditional follow spot.”

“The BlackTrax software interface is very well developed and the physical practicality of creating trackable LEDs and beacons worked well. What’s more, BlackTrax is supported by a very good technical team at CAST that were there to assist us with any queries we had.”

“BlackTrax is a very powerful tool for the future,” concluded van Genuchten.

Gil Densham, President and CEO of CAST Group Group said: “Did you know that in English “Varekai” means “wherever”, which also describes the renown of Cirque du Soleil for its highly creative, hugely artistic entertainment and clever leveraging of technology to consistently deliver magical results! BlackTrax is the solution that makes possible seamless, spontaneous creativity + artistry + technology – its job was to simplify. Nol and the creative team of magicians + artists used hot-wired technology to help spin a thrilling, vibrant and colorful yarn. And, we are pleased that BlackTrax played its part by streaming the critical, precise, target coordinates to lighting technology in realtime so the planned creative effects augmented the artistry.”

Shaping a Better World: Arup Deploys Pexip Globally

Large-scale enterprise-wide videoconferencing connects professionals

Independent professional services firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, Arup have deployed the Pexip® Infinity scalable software platform worldwide. The deployment will enable Arup’s 11,000 staff across 38 countries to use high definition video, voice and data collaboration and will also be used to connect to Arup’s clients.

“In Arup, we aim to introduce new, forward thinking, innovative and simple to operate technologies into our business. The deployment of Pexip Infinity will not only reinvent how our company communicates internally but will also change how we communicate with our external clients,” explained Roy Salfarlie, Head of AV, UKMEA AV Media Services at Arup.

Simen Teigre, CEO at Pexip said: “The way in which Arup have deployed our technology is testament to the simplified, interoperable and virtualized way in which our Infinity software helps people to collaborate. We look forward to enjoying a partnership with Arup for many years to come.”

Pexip ensures simplicity meets functionality

“Initially, within our proof of concept for next generation virtual meeting rooms, we were evaluating bridging solutions from three different vendors. However, we found these to be more complex than needed – they also required proprietary hardware and could not achieve satisfactory interoperability and HD video integration with Microsoft® Lync. Pexip Infinity was brought in through a revised vendor list. It met our requirements for a software-only solution and we had it working globally in less than two hours. We were really impressed,” explained Chris Ellen, Unified Messaging Team Lead at Arup.

Arup were traditionally using Cisco Jabber™ but wanted to extend their mobile video portfolio by introducing Microsoft Lync. “Using Pexip Infinity means you can dial in and use the same PC or device for a video call but at increased quality. We don’t have to license additional software clients either which is an attractive value proposition,” explained Ellen.

Video conferencing for today and beyond

Arup staff are issued with a personal Virtual Meeting Room with a PIN number for security. Individual users can control their conferences and view presentations from their own mobile phone or tablet.

“Our existing video infrastructure was physically restricted by the number of hardware boxes in our network. With Pexip Infinity, there’s no restriction on the number of people that can use the system. The platform is always on and always available, which enables the team to connect instantly whenever collaboration is required in their workflow,” said Ellen.

“Unlike traditional DSP-based MCU’s, Pexip’s conferencing nodes are virtual machines that can sit on either a VMware® or Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure making use of standard server architecture. For Arup, minimal to no investment is required to start deploying the solution as we can utilize existing infrastructure. Being virtual also means conferencing capacity can be increased within minutes and the platform is inherently redundant.”

Arup intend to extend the solution to incorporate client meetings. “We can now use the Pexip WebRTC functionality for external meeting participants. In the past we had to ship a copy of Cisco Jabber™ and provision a user account. This was cumbersome for everyone involved, it introduced a delay and had a cost attached to it. With Pexip Infinity we now just email a URL and external callers can experience professional quality video via their web browser,” explained Ellen.

“As an early adopter of Infinity, we have been involved in beta testing and providing feedback directly to the Pexip development team. The openness we enjoy with Pexip is refreshing and it helps us to plan for the future. Pexip Infinity is a good strategic fit for Arup.”

HPA Tech Retreat Celebrates 20 Years of Inquiry and Illumination

Industry Thought Leaders and Technology Mavens Head Back to Palm Springs for Thoughtful Exploration of an Industry in Transition

(Los Angeles, CA) For the past twenty years, the Hollywood Post Alliance(r) (HPA) Tech Retreat(r) has gathered a veritable who’s who in engineering, technology, creativity, and strategic business together for a structured yet informal meeting of the minds; where top industry leaders engaged in all aspects of production, distribution, post production, film, television, web and related endeavors, gather in an environment conducive to the exchange of knowledge and information. This year’s 20th Anniversary confab promises all of that and more from February 17-21, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells near Palm Springs, CA.

The Tech Retreat offers attendees the chance to explore the opportunities and the complexities facing an industry in transition, and to investigate new solutions and technologies that impact its many constituents.

The HPA Tech Retreat offers lively conference sessions, networking events and technology demonstrations to an engaged audience of participants and panelists that hail from a pool of the top technical, creative, business and hands-on experts. Topics will take the Tech Retreat audience from the nitty gritty to the very precipice.

For a full schedule, visit http://bit.ly/1cwt7B2. On Monday, February 17th, the event opens for early registration and a pre-Retreat course titled Physics, Psychophysics, and Vision for Advanced Motion Imaging from Charles Poynton and John Watkinson. Tuesday launches the HPA Tech Retreat, with the HPA Supersession: The New Normal is Anything But, focusing on the impact of new distribution platforms in production and post. Wednesday through Friday mornings feature breakfast roundtables where any industry relevant topic goes. The HPA Demo Room opens on Tuesday with demos and cocktails and is a hotbed of new products and technologies that feature curated and expert-demos which illustrate the latest developments. Wednesday focuses on the consumer experience and impact, and Thursday production and post. The Tech Retreat concludes Friday morning, with highlights and an emphasis on engineering. The entire event features many opportunities for one-on-one discussion with industry innovators, technology experts, business executives and other top professionals.

Mark Schubin, Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE Fellow has been working in television since 1967, writing about it since 1972, and chairing the HPA Tech Retreat program since 1997, commented on the engaging presentations set for next month. “We are dealing with fundamental changes in the very nature of our industry, from changing methodologies – broadcast, cable, DVD, DVR, for example- to the previously unthinkable, such as giving fans in a stadium access to their own instant replays, letting social media shape programming, and all of those things that lay beyond. This is a challenging but expansive time. For example, at the Tech Retreat, we’ll feature a presentation that may appear to be purely tech-focused and narrow (i.e., new display connections) but it will show how the consumer technology is powerfully driving the professional world. As always, we’ll be digging into important topics that are thought provoking, but are also important in terms of our businesses and careers, including two of the most critical issues in our industry: the change from video-specific technology to commodity information technology, and the question of what comes next on the screen, and what delivers the biggest bang for the buck?” Schubin notes, “Maybe it’s something a lot simpler than “4K.” He concludes, “And, we’re spending a day with a provocative dive into one of the most important topics there is – color.”

Leon Silverman President of the HPA noted, “This year is a significant milestone for the HPA Tech Retreat as we look back over the incredible effect that technology has had on our industry over the past 20 years. As the world of film and television became increasingly impacted by computer and digital technologies, the HPA Tech Retreat served as an important common ground for our industry to experience and drive transformative change together. Now more than ever, the Tech Retreat serves as an important bridge between so many of the rapidly changing aspects of our industry. As I do every year, I look forward to spending time with the most interesting people I know, and ones I hope to know, at the HPA Tech Retreat.”

Early bird registration pricing will end on January 10 and the Tech Retreat demo room still has a few remaining spaces left. For full information and registration visit www.hpaonline.com or call the HPA office at (213) 614-0860 or email Eileen Kramer – ekramer@hpaonline.com.

Working with MoMA, Christie partner Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services (MAAVS) selected eight Christie WU14K-M WUXGA DLP® projectors and one Christie HD14K-M 1080 HD DLP® projector to meet the needs of the exhibition and realize the ambitious vision of the artist.

Ten Thousand Waves premiered at the 2010 Sydney Biennial, and has been exhibited internationally to wide acclaim. The original inspiration for the 50-minute presentation was the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004, in which 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned on a flooded sandbank off the coast of northwest England. The Christie projectors will display the installation’s beautifully crafted visuals, which incorporate images of archival footage recorded by a police helicopter the night of the tragedy, accompanied by audio recordings of distress calls from the scene. With this tragedy at the center of the work, Julien poetically interweaves images of contemporary Chinese culture with its ancient myths.

Christie Delivers for MoMA and the Artist
The technology used to present Ten Thousand Waves is essential to its exhibition at MoMA. A total of nine Christie projectors will display the work onto nine doubled-sided screens ranging in sizes from 16 feet wide up to 23 feet wide, all hung at multiple levels and locations throughout the atrium. The exhibition is intended to be viewed not only from ground level, but also from the upper floors, which themselves are at various heights and angles to the display and look down on the space. These multiple perspectives encourage audiences to move through, and interact with, the sights and sounds of the installation from their personal points of view.

Eight Christie WU14K-M projectors light up eight screens of various sizes, while one Christie HD14K-M projector lights up the ninth, and largest, screen. The intricacy of these arrangements required the use of cutting-edge audio-visual display technology to deliver powerful and bright images, as well as crisp and clear sound, to create a large-scale immersive experience. The projectors also had to be exceptionally bright to overcome the challenges of the high ambient light environment.

According to Michael Wright, President of Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services, it was paramount that the state-of-the-art display technology chosen run smoothly and bring all aspects of the installation together to achieve its full visual impact. The Marron Atrium is an expansive, high ceilinged, public space where the museum has less control of ambient light and sound, requiring a technological solution that could overcome these challenges.

“We choose Christie high performance projectors because they offer the most reliability and flexibility, and always deliver the excellence our customers demand in their visual displays,” said Wright. “The installation required full design flexibility, so that they could be arranged to fit the artist’s needs within the atrium space. Since the moving images are projected from challenging angles, the projectors also needed to match the images and colors flawlessly, making the Christie M Series a perfect fit for this project. Working on such a large scale and with so many projectors, the museum used the new Christie InControl™ App to individually control and calibrate every aspect of each projector wirelessly.”

“At Christie, we help our customers create and share the world’s best visual experiences, and we proudly support the works of innovative artists such as Isaac Julien, who are experimenting with unique ways to tell their stories to the world,” said Mike Garrido, senior product manager, Business Products, Christie. “Ten Thousand Waves is a great example of how advanced visual display technology can help facilitate an artist’s creative vision, and we are thrilled to provide Christie projectors for this exciting project at MoMA.”

Part of the Christie M-Series 3-chip DLP® projector platform, the Christie WU14K-M and Christie HD14K-M offer high resolution (1920 x 1200 WUXGA and 1920 x 1080 HD respectively), and feature embedded warping, blending, and color matching capabilities for ultimate design flexibility. Drawing a maximum power of 1500W with two lamps instead of four, they are also highly efficient, with low operating costs.
