Technomad Brings Professional Sound to Cowboy Fellowship Arena

Venue attached to worship facility injects excitement into live events with new advanced audio loudspeakers and subwoofers

BOSTON, April 22, 2013 — The Cowboy Fellowship Church in southern Texas is a unique worship facility that preaches evangelism, discipleship and service — with an adjoining 2800-seat live event venue on campus. The church hosts a variety of events in the venue, from all-day rodeos and bull-riding clinics to musical performances.

The venue opened in 2012 without a professional sound system, using standard stage equipment to produce and amplify audio. The church soon hired Buster Burch as facilities administrator, who specified and installed an advanced audio system to cover the entire arena in a more consistent manner. Burch researched various options and purchased a Technomad Turnkey PA System to ensure exceptional audio quality and long-term durability in the local environment. The complete system included four loudspeakers and four subwoofers along with a complete audio headend — an unusual combination.

“I wanted to put together a system that looked good, sounded good and would last,” said Burch. “Our philosophy is that it’s worth putting extra money into something that we know will last a long time. This system isn’t just for us; it’s for future generations.”

The system is unusual in that each Technomad Berlin loudspeaker, mounted 20 feet off the ground, is accompanied by a Technomad Oslo subwoofer mounted 10 feet directly below. The Berlin and the Oslo are the most powerful loudspeaker and subwoofer models in the company’s portfolio.

“I had a real desire for bass in this venue, as bass is what suffers the most when you work outside,” said Burch. “If I am showing a video of a fireworks display, I want everyone in the stands to hear and feel that boom. The Oslo gives me exactly what we needed out of the bass at the low end. I’m very pleased.”

Burch adds that the Berlins produce plenty of power, with intelligible voice and full-range musical reproduction. He notes that the wide dispersion ensures that he can walk the entire length and width of the arena without hitting a dull spot.

“We’ve had several events, and the audience feedback is that the audio is crisp and clear and not overly loud,” said Burch. “I’ve had people tell me that they don’t hear the normal delay and bounceback common in other arenas. The system works together as one giant loudspeaker to deliver audio across the entire bleachers. I have true high-end and plenty of low-end and mid response. And the sound envelope per speaker is incredibly large.”

Typical venue events include team ropings, steer ropings, bull riding clinics, and ranch rodeos featuring men and women. Birch adds that the church plans to hold more live concerts moving forward, as well as special events such as Christmas services.

This means that the church also needed a durable sound system to ensure longevity. Burch evaluated the entire facility upon joining the staff, and quickly realized that weatherproof equipment was required. A roof provided coverage overhead, but open air surrounding the venue raised concerns. The requisite combination of durability and high quality audio ultimately led him to Technomad.

“We’re about 30 miles south of San Antonio in the town of Jourdanton, and we get a lot of dust and wind as well as some cold and condensation,” said Burch. “I like how the drain holes at the bottom of the cabinets expel condensation to keep them dry. I also used Technomad’s new stainless steel mounts, which are very strong and sturdy in addition to being weatherproof. They lock in really well and give us flexibility to accurately adjust the angle and direction of each loudspeaker.”

Burch purchased the Turnkey PA System from ProAudio.com of Grand Prairie, Texas. The complete system included a pre-wired, protective equipment rack with an audio amplifier, six-channel mixer and three microphones; as well as all required cables and connectors to expedite installation. Burch added a Mackie wireless control board for remote audio adjustments, as well as Sennheiser wireless equipment.

Barix Integrates with Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 IP Phone Systems

Solution enables IP voice paging over analog speakers via digital phone systems

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, March 25, 2013 — Conversion from analog to digital phone systems brings many benefits, from enabling voice communication on a common network to programming data applications. The transition also has its share of challenges, such as leveraging analog devices within digital voice environments. This includes enabling IP-based voice paging over existing analog speakers.

IP audio and control specialist Barix now collaborates with Enghouse Interactive, an enterprise-level communications software and services company, to eliminate this challenge in schools, hospitals, warehouses and other facilities transitioning to digital phone systems.

The solution extends the power of Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 (formerly Datapulse Progression), which enables IP voice paging in leading digital phone systems, to analog speakers using low-cost Barix IP audio hardware to receive and decode live voice. This adds functionality without forcing end users to discard speaker systems — thereby reducing costs and simplifying installations. The solution is also viable for decoding pre-recorded emergency notifications and data-centric audio applications, like bell schedules in K-12 schools.

“We’re essentially turning an analog speaker into an IP speaker with Barix,” said Dane Smith, technical services engineer, Enghouse Interactive. “It’s ideal in situations where it’s difficult or unsuitable to add phones, such as in school and hospital hallways. Instead, our customers can use existing systems by removing ceiling tiles and placing a Barix decoder between the Ethernet cable and the speaker.”

Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 were developed to enable organizations to leverage their investment in IP by delivering practical, converged business applications to Avaya IP telephones. Applications include voice paging, pre-recorded announcements, broadcast alerts and RSS feeds on IP phones for the Avaya CS1000 PBX system. The software is added to existing IP phone systems instead of requiring end users to purchase a separate paging system. Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 customers can subsequently pick up any receiver and page to single points or multiple zones; or initiate pre-recorded announcements from the IP phone or the Applications for Avaya CS 1000 web-based administration page. This enables remote activation of audio warnings in emergency situations.

Enghouse Interactive brings Barix into projects that extend IP voice paging and pre-recorded announcement capability to analog speakers. Barix Exstreamer IP decoders are shipped direct to the end user; Enghouse Interactive simply registers each device’s corresponding IP address to the network. All Barix devices are configured to receive multiple multicast streams, ensuring reliable delivery and minimal network traffic congestion.

Smith notes that the Barix interface is simple to learn and easy to use. “We investigated several IP speaker solutions, and chose the Barix Exstreamer for its simplicity and reliability,” he said. “One of the first questions asked when talking to new customers is whether they intend to send voice or pre-recorded audio announcements to IP speakers. The Exstreamers are easy to set up and once installed, listen for multicast streams on a specific port and reliably play out any messages that are sent out across those multicast addresses.”

Smith adds that more than one multicast address can be assigned to the same speaker for maximum impact. “The customer can have IT support, sales and finance as different zones, yet pages to any of the three will still go to the same speaker using Barix, which makes it so easy to deploy,” he said.

San Lorenzo High School Sounds Off With New Technomad Turnkey PA System

Bay Area systems integrator chooses Technomad for high quality, durability and ease of installation

BOSTON, March 4, 2013San Lorenzo High School, part of the San Lorenzo Unified School District in the Bay Area of California, has installed a new Technomad Turnkey PA System to electrify sports and special events in its outdoor campus stadium. The complete solution, including four weatherproof loudspeakers and a complete, pre-wired signal processing equipment rack, will deliver superior audio quality to up to 1,500 spectators come spring.

The new audio system is the first of its kind at the high school. The timing of the installation ensures the system will improve public address quality for this year’s graduation ceremony, and will otherwise inject new life into home athletic events.

“This installation represents a significant milestone for San Lorenzo High School, as it had no real PA system previously in place and was relying on outdated field horns for use during sporting events,” said Rick McKinney, owner and president of the Hayward, California-based Lloyd F. McKinney Associates, which managed the installation.

San Lorenzo High School sought a versatile, great-sounding solution that covered the entire stadium and could remain outdoors year-round. The local climate produces heavy rains and winds in the winter months, and the school wanted to avoid the costs of replacing damaged equipment.

“We knew Technomad was the perfect match for this project when we heard their requirements,” said McKinney. “We’ve worked with Technomad many times, and we knew the superior clarity, versatility and fully weatherproof design of their loudspeakers were right in line with the school’s needs. The audio is crisp and clear, and if they get soaked it won’t make a difference in sound quality.”

McKinney chose Technomad Noho weatherproof loudspeakers, noting that they generate a very broad and smooth response, with plenty of power to cover the entire field. He mounted two on the home side and two on the visitor’s side to provide more flexibility for music and band-related productions. The complete solution includes the pre-wired signal processing rack, with an amplifier and mixer; and all required cables and connectors for the loudspeaker installation.

Despite some rain delays, McKinney had the system up and running in a few weeks. “Rain softened the ground, so we had to install plywood to keep the scissor lift from sinking into the new grass,” he said. “Once secured, we quickly mounted the loudspeakers, attached the cables, plugged in the mixer and amplifier, and turned on the system. It was seamless.”

McKinney notes that the input connector for an iPod and Mp3 player in the signal processing rack is a favorite feature. He added a wireless solution for field-level iPod control for special events.

“Features like this are important for good sound quality,” he said. “We live in a highly connected, audio-rich environment, and today’s adolescents expect the same audio quality from pre-show and halftime music that they get from their iPods and Mp3 players. The Technomad system delivers on this, and the Nohos reproduce the full musical range, with plenty of high end and very good lows and mids.”

McKinney is planning another Technomad installation at Arroyo High School in the same school district this spring. In the meantime he is relishing the success of this project for good reason.

“My children and my wife were educated through the San Lorenzo Unified School District, and I attended from the fifth grade,” McKinney said. “I’m honored to have directed this installation.”

FSR’s New CORE Product Line Addresses Floor Space Challenge

COOL OVERHEAD RACK ENCLOSURES OFFER SOLUTIONS FOR CLASSROOMS, BOARDROOMS AND MEETING ROOMS

Woodland Park, NJ – FSR, manufacturer of audio and video switching, control products, and connectivity boxes, is debuting its new CORE family of products to help solve the challenges of today’s classrooms, boardrooms and meeting rooms where floor space has reached an all-time premium.

With FSR’s Cool Overhead Rack Enclosures (CORE), which consists of the Ceiling Box family of above ceiling rack enclosures, and the brand new Top Shelf wall mounted rack enclosure, the company can offer viable options to facilities which can no longer afford to devote floor space to equipment racks or credenzas.

“Let’s face it, many facilities today just don’t have the same amount of floor space any longer to devote to large equipment racks,” says Jan Sandri, president, FSR. “With our new CORE family of products, FSR has the solution. We are thrilled to be able to introduce these powerful options to the industry, which includes the Ceiling Box family and Top Shelf wall-mounted rack enclosure, that target today’s challenges of space constraints.”

The Ceiling Box family is installed in a standard 2’ x 2’ or 2’ x 4’ drop ceilings and provides from 2 ½ rack to 4 full rack spaces for equipment mounting. Optionally, the Ceiling Box family can be equipped with a projector pole mount adapter so that the projector can mount directly to the ceiling box and cables can disappear through the pole.

The newest member of the CORE family is the Top Shelf wall mounted rack. Top Shelf mounts to a wall just below the ceiling in installations without a drop ceiling or where space above the drop ceiling is limited. The Top Shelf provides four rack units of mounting space and the plastic cover allows RF and WiFi signals to pass unobstructed between the equipment and the room.

Barix Real-Time Clock Keeps Devices Ticking

Company to introduce new accessory at ISE in Amsterdam

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, December 3, 2012 — Audio over IP pioneer Barix addresses network downtime with its new Real-Time Clock accessory, ensuring that audio and control devices continue operating uninterrupted during network failures — keeping mission-critical operations for broadcast radio, streaming media, building automation and other applications on time.

The market-agnostic, self-sustaining reference clock plugs into any device with an RS232 serial port, including but not limited to Barix IP audio and control products. The Barix Real-Time Clock (RTC) maintains time, even when unpowered, for years. This allows the RTC to provide time information immediately after a device startup, independent of a network-based time reference.

“Barix devices are normally network-connected and receive the time through that connection, but what if, after a power outage, the network connection remains down?” asks Johannes G. Rietschel, CEO and founder of Barix AG. “It’s a serious concern if your operation requires time-dependent logging or control. The Barix Real-Time Clock provides that time source to maintain operations.”

Rietschel points to specific examples for streaming media and building automation. Retail businesses, for example, often operate “Store and Play” systems for in-store audio that are programmed to run time-based announcements and playlists. The Barix Real-Time Clock allows the device to work offline without network connection, playing out audio messages and time-sensitive content on time. Similarly, broadcasters streaming syndicated programs with local network IDs, jingles, ads and promos can trigger events on schedule without affecting the on-air content.

For building automation, Rietschel notes that Barix Barionet IP control devices can use the RTC to gain independence from network time references, continuing to switch lights and boilers on and off if the network goes south. This ensures that energy-saving techniques for schools, businesses and other facilities continue without disruption.

“The overarching benefit for any operation is that your devices can read the time from the RTC and run critical programs as scheduled,” he said. “It’s a low-cost accessory that can make a big difference.”

Barix will show the Real-Time Clock along with its latest one-way and two-way IP audio devices at the ISE show in Amsterdam, taking place January 29-31, 2012 at the RAI Exhibition Center (Booth #2-E64).

FSR Revolutionizes Wall Mounted Raks With Top Shelf

Woodland Park, NJ • FSR, manufacturer of audio and video switching, control products, and connectivity boxes, announces the launch of Top Shelf, a revolution in wall mounted equipment racks. Drawing on their extensive experience with UL Listed Ceiling Racks, FSR designed Top Shelf to provide an unobtrusive and secure enclosure for audio, video and network equipment. Top Shelf mounts to a wall close to the ceiling in locations without drop ceilings, or where space above the drop ceiling is limited.

Top Shelf holds up to 4 RU of equipment with multiple mounting locations for power as well as signal connections for easy installation. The unit’s steel frame ensures the equipment will be securely mounted; and a plastic cover allows wireless signals to pass in and out of the enclosure unobstructed. The cover can be painted to match the room décor, and the box can be mounted in the best location to ease wiring and visual impact.

“Top Shelf is the newest addition to our wall-mounted enclosure line of products,” says Jan Sandri, president, FSR. “With its unique ability to solve challenges many classrooms, boardrooms, schools, hospitals and more face with limited space, we are thrilled to bring this new solution to market. The unit’s ability to pack up to 4RU of AV equipment in a visually appealing housing make it a perfect fit for almost any AV environment.”
