FSR Adds 6″ and 8″ Poke-Thru Floor Boxes to SmartFit Family

New Boxes Offer High Capacity, Pleasing Aesthetics and Ease of Installation

Woodland Park, NJ – FSR, manufacturer of audio and video switching, control products, and connectivity boxes, has announced the addition of fire-rated 6” and 8” Poke-Thru floor boxes as part of its SmartFit family of products.

The easy-to-install, sturdy boxes, available in 6” and 8” sizes, present a high-capacity solution with an ultra-low profile design that eliminates the trip hazard frequently present in competitive products. The covers, available in three architectural finishes: brushed aluminum, brushed brass, and black, mix pleasing aesthetics with functionality. The entire cover door swings open 180° with two smaller cable access doors that fold down for cable egress while the cover door is secure. Each box features a variety of sub-plates that can be configured to allow the power, audio, video and data connections needed for nearly every application thus addressing the challenge of insufficient capacity.

All SmartFit poke-thru floor boxes are UL listed in Canada and the United States for fire and scrub water.

Pacific Wild Monitors Whale Behavior with Barix IP Audio Solution

Non-profit conservation organization depends on reliable, high-quality audio streams from Barix devices to study humpback whales in their natural setting off the Canadian coast

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, October 23, 2012 — Audio over IP pioneer Barix AG is well-known for supplying one-way and two-way audio solutions for broadcast radio, entertainment, in-store media, security and transportation applications. Scientific audio is a lesser-known application from Barix — but one that non-profit conservation organization Pacific Wild has found clear benefits from using.

Dedicated to protecting Canada’s Pacific coast, Pacific Wild has deployed audio monitoring stations at four points along the British Columbia shoreline to capture live sounds of humpback whales in their natural marine environment. The monitoring stations use rugged “hydrophones” — microphones designed for underwater listening and recording — to capture whale audio and other sounds of the ocean in high quality.

Barix Instreamer IP audio devices encode the captured sounds live and stream the audio 24/7 over the internet to Pacific Wild offices, allowing Pacific Wild employees, scientists and wildlife enthusiasts to study and learn from the behavioral patterns of humpback whales — and how surrounding activity such as shipping activity affects their behavior. The live stream is accessible for the public at http://pacificwild.org/site/great-bear-live/hydrophones/.

According to Rob MacKenzie, a freelance IT engineer working with Pacific Wild, the Barix solution has significantly raised live audio quality from the hydrophones. MacKenzie was brought in to “bring the technological level up a few notches” and improve the end-to-end system. The previous audio system recorded 8-bit audio at 8kHz, which made it challenging to capture clear sound. The Barix solution digitizes the hydrophone-captured audio into 16-bit MP3 for the best signal integrity and compatibility.

“I was tasked with rebuilding the entire system,” said MacKenzie. “I put up a new Linux recording system, added new monitoring systems, improved network availability and rebuilt the power systems for all the enclosures. But the Barix Instreamer has been instrumental to our research. We’re capturing everything from loud identification calls to soft back-and-forth chatter. Just being able to record those very soft sounds proves the bit depth and audio quality we get from Barix.”

MacKenzie noted that while there are a number of research stations for whale behavior in British Columbia, there has been a gap in the central coast area that Pacific Wild is now covering. Pacific Wild expects to expand to 12 sites over the next five years, using Barix to encode and stream all live audio.

“There is a lot of research going on with humpback whales, including male song and how it changes across large geographical areas,” said MacKenzie. “We can monitor how one whale will start singing a slightly different song, and how it is passed along to other whales. We’re also studying how ambient underwater noises and shipping traffic affect their behavior and ability to communicate. The Barix devices, in addition to providing audio, help us perform measurements, create graphs and understand trends related to all these sounds.”

MacKenzie adds that the Barix Instreamer has been extremely reliable, with relatively no setup process beyond assigning each device an IP address. The devices are bolted into protective, solar-powered enclosures installed off the shoreline and out in the wild, built to withstand the icy blasts of wind and year-round moisture associated with the harsh regional climate.

“The Barix encoders spit out data constantly and consistently as long as the radios are up,” he said. The complete, end-to-end network includes 802.11 microwave radios to deliver the live Barix stream from the remote locations to Pacific Wild headquarters.

“Barix devices serve scientific applications worldwide,” said Johannes Rietschel, CEO of Barix AG. “The AWI (Alfred Wegener Institute)’s PALAOA station in Antarctica has been using our devices for many years to monitor underwater nature sounds. With the Pacific Wild project, whales are now monitored both in the northern and southern hemisphere by Barix devices! These are just two examples of Barix devices in action, with thousands of installations worldwide serving their purpose with Swiss precision and bespoke reliability.”

Acoustics First’s acoustical wall fabric saves $Green$ while being Green!

For Immediate Release

Acoustical wall fabric saves $Green$ while being Green!

Acoustical wall fabric installed under chair rail

Sound Channels® acoustical wall fabric is manufactured from 100% Post-Consumer Recycled material, making this a quick ship, easy, no thought acoustic solution.

Sound Channels® is applied directly to vertical surfaces, is easy to cut and installs like wall carpet. This absorptive wall fabric is a great choice to moderate speech frequencies in any application. Great to soften sound in conference rooms, distance learning, offices, and day care facilities, this material can also be used as a base layer in home theaters, recording studios and broadcast facilities.

Not only is this economical acoustical treatment available in countless colors, it is manufactured from recycled materials, reducing environmental impact!

Sound Channels in manufactured using Eco-fi fibers. Eco-fi is a high-quality polyester fiber made from 100% certified recycled plastic bottles. It can go into any textile product such as clothing, blankets, carpets, wall coverings, auto interiors, home furnishings, and craft felt. Eco-fi can also be blended with other fibers, such as cotton or wool, for enhanced qualities.

AN EASY GUIDE: 15 bottles = 1 yard of wall covering

Why buy Eco‐fi products?
We have the capacity to keep billions of plastic bottles out of the world’s landfills each year by using post-consumer plastic bottles instead of virgin materials in the fiber manufacturing process. By doing this, we can lower harmful air emissions and save millions of barrels of oil from being used which, in turn, reduces the harmful effects of acid rain, global warming, and smog. Fabrics made from Eco-fi fiber are chemically and functionally nearly identical to those made from non-recycled fiber. The difference is that Eco-fi fiber is made without depleting the Earth’s natural resources. With properties such as strength, softness, shrinkage-resistance, and colorfastness, market applications for Eco-fi products are expanding every day.

Clovis High School Taps Technomad Turnkey PA System For Friday Night Football

BOSTON, September 24, 2012 – A Clovis, New Mexico high school is bringing more energy to its 1,500-seat outdoor campus stadium on Friday nights with a new Technomad Turnkey PA system. The Technomad system provides an all-in-one audio solution to enhance quality and coverage for all home football games, including pre-show and halftime music.

The school needed a system that would produce clear and even sound across the stadium, including visitor and home stands. The Turnkey PA system comprises four Technomad Berlin weatherproof loudspeakers, a pre-wired amplifier, a dynamic hard-wired microphone, and a six-channel mixer with front-panel iPod/mp3 inputs. The solution included all necessary cables and connectors to facilitate a quick and simple installation just in time for the 2012 football season.

The new setup replaced outdated loudspeakers damaged by time and weather. Technomad loudspeakers feature IP56-rated weatherproof designs immune to weather-related elements, allowing them to remain outdoors all year — a huge plus for Natalie Roseberry, partner and technician at Wes-Tex Audio Electronics.

“Clovis High School’s old system was pretty much useless,” said Roseberry, who performed the installation. “Some of the speakers delivered very little sound, while others were completely broken and generated no sound at all. It was clear they needed a system overhaul. We have installed Technomad loudspeakers at high school stadiums in the past, and they can remain outdoors, protected from rain, wind, and snow. You never have to worry about damage. This is just another reason we keep coming back to Technomad.”

The entire setup was flawless and took only two days, according to Roseberry. She and her team installed Technomad yoke mounts on top of the home side of the press box, and installed the amplifier and mixer in an existing equipment rack mounted in the press box. She later fastened the four Berlin loudspeakers onto the yoke mounts, facing them outward toward the field and visiting bleachers to maximize coverage.

“It was all very simple,” said Roseberry. “The flexibility of the yoke mounts allowed us to tilt the loudspeakers in this desired direction so we could ensure smooth, even audio coverage across the entire stadium.”

Roseberry followed with a series of tests that included voice intelligibility and high-volume musical reproduction. According to Roseberry, the Berlin’s unmatched combination of high volume output, broad dispersion and remarkable fidelity made it the obvious choice for the stadium’s large spectator capacity.

“I walked across the field during the tests and could not believe how crisp and sharp the audio sounded from both the CD player and the iPod,” she said. “I could hear all the instruments and a clear vocal track, which I have never heard before from speakers at a football field. The microphone was crisp, clear, and sharp sounding as well.”

Roseberry experimented further, connecting her iPhone to the Technomad system via its auxiliary port — adding that nearby maintenance staff commented on how well the system sounded.

“We’re continually impressed with their functionality,” said Roseberry. “Today’s youth expects the same great sound quality as their iPods and mp3 players. Not only does Technomad deliver on this, it allows for the easy hookup of all these devices. And the clarity of the music still comes through as intelligible and crisp.”
