Shotoku Serves Up A Win For Tennis Championship Broadcasts

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM PROVIDES AUGMENTED REALITY FOR HIGH-PROFILE SPORTING EVENT

Staines, UK – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, recently facilitated the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) to BBC Sport for its live outside broadcasts of the Wimbledon 2013 tennis championships. Shotoku sales director James Eddershaw announced from the Company’s European headquarters in Staines, UK, that Shotoku provided BBC Sport with two TP-90VR and SX300VR Tracking Pedestal & Head systems for its temporary OB studio during its live outdoor coverage of the Lawn Tennis Championships.

AR was introduced on the first day of the tournament and continued to be used for every studio broadcast throughout the two-week tournament. The level of use and complexity of the graphics adapted as the tournament progressed, right up to the final day. In the UK alone, more than 17m viewers watched the men’s final broadcast.

It was Shotoku’s unique VR tracking technology that made transferring systems more typically found in permanent studio installations, into the temporary OB studio possible. Using highly accurate internal encoders to monitor all moving axes and combine with simple in-studio referencing technology, allowed Shotoku to drastically reduce the time required for installation and calibration.

“We are delighted to have been able to work with BBC Sport to help them deliver AR for the first time at an Outside Broadcast, especially at such a prestigious event as the Wimbledon tennis championships.” said Eddershaw. “We are particularly pleased with the reaction of the camera operators who used the equipment for the first time in an OB environment. Any changes to their normal operation came simply from working with the in-shot graphics, not the equipment.”

Shotoku’s recently introduced SX-300VR virtual tracking EFP head features precise tracking and uncompromised operation. Based on the popular SX300 EFP head, the ergonomic design with decades of extensive VR experience behind it provides a robust, reliable platform for a wide range of camera and lens configurations. The SX-300VR provides high-accuracy, real-time data output with absolutely no loss in manual performance. Like all Shotoku VR systems, the unit combines with the Serial Position Interface (SPI) for frame-synchronized high-resolution data tracking, compatible with all leading VR graphics systems. The head may be simply mounted on a tripod, or for real-time full 3D tracking, one of Shotoku’s VR pedestals such as the lightweight, 3-stage TP-90VR, used in this application. While both are typically employed for a range of studio configurations, the SX-300VR and TP-90VR proved to be robust, flexible and reliable in a challenging OB studio application.

SYMETRIX ZONE MIX 761 TURN-KEY DSP MANAGES ROCK STAR MANSION-THEMED RESTAURANT IN PUNTA CANA’S HARD ROCK CAFE

PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Rolling Stone Magazine proclaimed Chef Kerry Simon to be the “Rock ‘n Roll Chef,” a distinction fitting for his latest creation: Simon Mansion and Supper Club. The establishment is part of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Beyond an artfully composed menu and spirits list, the lure of Simon Mansion and Supper Club is its unique and imaginative layout, which recreates the decadent, eccentric rooms of a rock star’s mansion. Guests can dine in the living room, the bedroom, the bathroom, the library, the studio, the patio, and, of course, the dining room. A/V integration firm Audio Diseño designed and installed a custom, high-SPL sound system for Simon Mansion and Supper Club using the cost-effective, high-fidelity Symetrix Zone Mix 761 fixed architecture, standalone digital signal processor.

Miguel González del Rey led the installation on behalf of Audio Diseño. “The purpose of the sound system at Simon Mansion and Supper Club is two-fold,” he said. “Most of the time it functions as a background music system, with noticeably higher volume than your average restaurant. At other times however, the system may be driven up to 96dB. After all, this is the Hard Rock Hotel, and this restaurant is a rock star’s mansion! Beyond the necessity of high volume and high fidelity, the style required an unobtrusive installation. Therefore, almost all of the loudspeakers and subwoofers are mounted in the ceiling.”

Inputs to the system include background music from a computer and a music streaming device, as well as two in-ceiling microphones for sensing background music. With twelve inputs, six outputs, and comprehensive processing facilities, the Symetrix Zone Mix 761 sits at the heart of the system. Its outputs feed several separate zones, including the kitchen, the dining room, the bedroom, the bathroom, and the smoking room. ElectroVoice CPS 4.5 and PA2250T amplifiers ably power a distributed array of SoundTube CM890d, CM500i, and SM590i loudspeakers and SoundTube CM1001d-T subwoofers. The restaurant staff and management can select input sources and adjust the volume from a Symetrix ARC wall panel remote.

“The Symetrix Zone Mix 761 has the right input/output count and processing facilities for a job like this,” said del Rey. “Its ambient noise-sensing algorithm is usable and natural, as are the dynamic controls that provide amplifier and loudspeaker protection. Most importantly however, the Zone Mix 761 sounds fantastic. Configuring the Symetrix ARC wall panel controllers was also easy and flexible. The client made several requests for user control, and we were easily able to accommodate all of them.”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.

VARIA Delivers Serious Performance at Comedy Club Stardome

Hoover, Alabama – August 2013… For more than 25 years, the Comedy Club Stardome has built a reputation as one of the most respected comedy showcases, not just in the state but in the entire Southeast. The club’s stage has hosted some of the biggest names in comedy, including Margaret Cho, Craig Ferguson, Lewis CK, Sinbad, and Pauly Shore, as well as a regular roster of new and innovative talent.

The room’s tiered, dinner theater style seating offers a few interesting acoustical challenges. As Patrick Sobers of Birmingham-based Media Visions explains, “it’s a fan-shaped room, with dinner theater style table seating on tiered rows. But the front section is almost at orchestra pit level; you don’t get to stage height until the third or fourth row.”

With a throw to the last row of around 60 feet, the problematic space called for a sound system that could be shaped to create the custom coverage the room needed. Media Visions recommended the Renkus-Heinz VARIA modular point source array.

The system comprises left and right arrays, each with a single VAX101-15 and VAX101-22 cabinet. Each array is topped with a VAX15S subwoofer. “The top box has a variable 60 to 90 degree coverage, and the bottom one goes from 90 to 120 degrees,” says Sobers. Additional front fill is provided by a pair of CFX41 compact coaxial speakers, with CFX81 8-inch cabinets covering rear delay and side fills. The system is powered by Lab Gruppen amps, with a Biamp Nexia handling system DSP. A PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 digital console handles Front of House duties.

Sobers quotes the club’s owner, Bruce Ayers, as saying the system “sounds absolutely awesome.”

“They’ve struggled for several years with systems that didn’t really meet their needs,” says Sobers. “VARIA enabled us to design a system that delivers consistent, full range coverage and great intelligibility to the entire room.”

Extron Introduces Three Input Switcher with Integrated DTP Transmitter

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the DTP T USW 233, a three input switcher for sending HDMI or analog video, audio, and control up to 230 feet (70 meters) over a single CATx cable to an Extron DTP 230 receiver. It is HDCP compliant and provides two HDMI inputs, one RGBHV or component video input, and one DTP 230 twisted pair output. The analog signals are digitized to ensure a high quality digital video signal is transmitted to the DTP 230 receiver. The switcher also offers many integrator-friendly features, such as EDID Minder, auto-switching between inputs, audio input assignment, and remote powering. These features plus the low profile enclosure make the DTP T USW 233 ideal for discreet placement in lecterns, beneath tables, or in other locations.

“Integrators and consultants are often challenged to find the ideal products that meet the connectivity requirements at the conference table or lectern,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “The DTP T USW 233 combines digital and analog AV switching with twisted pair extension into one compact product that simplifies the installation and design of most installations.”

The DTP T USW 233 provides reliable switching and transmission of HDMI signals, supporting Deep Color up to 12-bit and embedded HD lossless audio formats. For simplified operation, the DTP T USW 233 can automatically switch between the digital and analog sources. In addition, the analog audio input can be assigned to any of the three video inputs, or it can be set to follow the input switch. To simplify integration of sources and displays, the switcher features two Extron-exclusive technologies: EDID Minder and Key Minder. EDID Minder manages EDID communication between the display device and input sources to ensure that the correct video formats are displayed reliably. For HDMI signals with protected content, Key Minder authenticates and maintains continuous HDCP encryption between input and output devices to ensure quick and reliable switching.

The switcher includes an RS-232 and IR insertion port, enabling simultaneous transmission of bidirectional RS-232 and IR signals from a control system using the same twisted pair cable that transmits video and audio. For added installation flexibility, a single external power supply can be used to remotely power the DTP T USW 233 transmitter or a DTP 230 receiver over the twisted pair cable. The DTP T USW 233 offers convenient control options, including front panel control, RS-232, and contact closure with tally output for easy integration into a variety of environments.

Iconyx Brings Clarity to the Art of Living Foundation

Boone, NC – July 2013… Founded in 1981 by spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the Art of Living Foundation has evolved to become one of the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian and educational non-governmental organizations. Working with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Foundation offers programs dedicated to health, education, eliminating stress, and restoring human values in more than 140 countries worldwide.

One of the Foundation’s most treasured retreats is The International Center for Meditation and Well-Being, located in the lush, rolling hills of the Great Smokey Mountains. It’s an idyllic piece of Planet Earth, where visitors can immerse themselves in the grandeur of nature, while retuning their bodies and minds with yoga, meditation, and organic diet.

The retreat’s Meditation Hall is a large, multi-purpose space that is used for everything from yoga and meditation classes to dance events and performances. As Jeff Hedgecock, Project Manager for AVI-SPL in Charlotte, NC explains, the room is visually appealing but acoustically challenging.

“It’s a very large space, very bright and airy and open, with nice high ceilings,” says Hedgecock. “But when they have someone leading a yoga or mediation class, intelligibility is quite an issue. And that’s not a scenario where one wants to shout, so for people at the back of the room it’s very difficult to concentrate on the instruction being given.”

A single pair of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC16-R-II provided an ideal solution for the room’s sonic challenges. “They hold some dance events and performances there as well, so the musical performance of the Iconyx was equally critical,” says Hedgecock.

The Iconyx’s multiple steerable beams can be individually attenuated to provide uniform coverage and SPL across even the most challenging spaces. “That’s one of the things that’s great about the Iconyx – we were able to steer the beam to make the whole hall sound great,” says Hedgecock.

The design-build system is streamlined and uncomplicated. A Biamp Red One handles simple volume and source selection, with all audio routed directly to the Iconyx columns. As Hedgecock observes, aesthetics was also a consideration here.

“The fact that we were able to paint the speakers to pretty much blend into the walls was a major advantage for them,” he explains. He points to his own previous experience with Iconyx as instrumental in trying them at the Foundation. “I’ve used Iconyx on a couple of other problematic spaces, and was pretty certain it would be a good fit here.”
