Two Symetrix Jupiter 8 Turn-Key DSPs and ARC-WEB Control Technology Power Corner Entertainment

1919HOUSTON, TEXAS: Corner Entertainment is a recently-opened entertainment constellation located in Houston, Texas. It features a restaurant (Corner Table) a bar/nightclub (The Oak Bar), and a second wine and mixed drinks bar (1919). Though distinctly named, the three concepts flow together, both physically and in the vibe that unites them. That vibe is perhaps best described as high-class, but relaxed. Though the aesthetic and the quality of the libations and cuisine might justify it, Corner Entertainment is decidedly not stuffy. Houston-based integration firm LoGo Audio Video Music designed and installed Corner Entertainment’s high-performance, cost-effective audio system using two Symetrix Jupiter 8 fixed architecture standalone DSPs with smartphone control for the managers provided by Symetrix ARC-WEB.

“For small- to mid-sized installations, the Symetrix Jupiter is the only processor I’ll use,” explained Jay Gonzalez, LoGo AV’s founder and chief designer. “I’ve used a wide range of processors from different manufacturers, and I’ve experienced a surprising number of failures. When I have issues like that with a processor, I can’t use it again. It’s just too stressful! In contrast, the Symetrix Jupiter is always rock-solid and incredibly easy to work with. My programmer has had zero issues and loves that connecting with the Jupiter is as simple as plugging it in. And of course, Symetrix’ studio-grade sound quality is amazing and gives my clients a sound system to be proud of.”

Corner Entertainment’s audio system is divided into two completely separate halves: one that runs the restaurant and a second that runs the bar. Inputs to the restaurant system include a wireless microphone for events, a tie-in from a small mixer on a patio where bands set up, an iPod dock, and a Pandora music service stream. With eight inputs, one Symetrix Jupiter 8 accepts those sources and provides all of the necessary equalization, dynamics, and routing control. Crown CTS-Series 70-volt amplifiers power SoundTube SM500 loudspeakers. The Jupiter 8’s eight outputs feed eight separate zones, selected to give Gonzalez and his team maximum flexibility to tailor output levels and processing for a perfectly tuned system.

CornerTable_PatioSource selection and volume control are provided by Symetrix ARC-WEB technology. “They were excited by ARC-WEB,” said Gonzalez. “It’s cool technology that’s also very practical and, like all the Symetrix products I’ve worked with, rock-solid.” The owners and managers are set up to use ARC-WEB, but in the event that they aren’t available, LoGo Audio Video Music installed a hard-wired backup. A Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote located at the equipment rack provides redundant control.

The area that Corner Entertainment beautifully renovated to form its bar areas was constructed in 1919 (hence the name) as a sawmill to process local oak trees (hence the name) for upscale residences in Houston. Its inputs include a wireless microphone, an iPod dock, a Blu-ray player, an HDMI audio de-embedder, and a DJ tie-in from the wine bar area. Again, a Symetrix Jupiter 8 DSP handles all of the system processing, and Symetrix ARC-WEB and ARC-2e control technology allows source selection and volume control. With sixteen QSC AD-S82Hs and two QSC GPW subwoofers powered by beefy QSC PLX-3602 amplifiers, “it can get dance club crazy” in the bar areas, in Gonzalez’ enthusiastic words. A separate VIP area, dubbed “Lexington’s,” has its own Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote for separate input selection and volume control, as well as a dedicated flat-screen for presentations or screenings.

Mackie DLM Helps Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Keep Travelers Entertained

Austin, TX – October 2014… Widely regarded as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin’s buzzing local scene is heightened by the notoriety of festivals like South By Southwest, and popular shows like “Austin City Limits.”

Austin boasts literally hundreds of live music venues, but one stands out as particularly unique. With more than 10 million people passing through its gates every year, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is often the first and last live music venue visitors to the city see and hear. The audio is powered by a Mackie DLM system installed at the Main Terminal’s Asleep At the Wheel Stage at the Ray Benson Roadhouse.

“There has been music here in the airport since it opened 15 years ago,” explains Michael Pennock, who oversees the music and audio at Austin-Bergstrom Airport. “We have six venues and 23 shows a week. The Ray Benson Roadhouse is our busiest venue.”

The Roadhouse’s Asleep At the Wheel Stage features two Mackie DLM12 12-inch full-range powered loudspeakers, along with four DLM12s for stage monitoring. The entire system is connected to a Mackie DL1608 16-channel digital live sound mixer with iPad control.

The Mackie DLM12 delivers 2,000 Watts of Class D amplification, powering a custom-designed 12-inch woofer and 1.75″ HF compression driver. As Pennock points out, the extra power translates into better performance without having to push the system too hard.

“Initially, we had other speakers installed on a truss above the stage, and there was a lot more sound spilling over to the gates,” said Pennock. “With the DLM12s, we’re able to focus the sound and get better coverage with virtually no bleed. It’s been a great improvement and we get a lot of compliments from the performers on the sound.”

As Pennock observes, one of the major challenges in operating a live music venue in the middle of a busy airport is maintaining control over the sound to ensure the music does not overpower the airport’s paging system. The ability to control the 16-channel DL1608 via iPad empowered the airport’s audio crew to easily stay on top of the challenge.

“On either side of the Ray Benson Roadhouse, there are two Southwest airline gates,” says Pennock. “With the DL1608s remote iPad control, we can actually walk over to the gates while the band is playing, check volume levels with the airline personnel, and adjust from the iPad on the spot if needed.”

The DL1608 six aux sends handle more than enough monitor mixes, and support for up to 10 wireless iPad connections makes it easy for both crew and performers to dial in exactly what they need.

Besides just being a great sounding mixer, Pennock says the DL1608’s iPad integration has brought other benefits as well. “Since moving to iPad control, we not only have better communication with the airlines, we’ve got a better sounding mix, and we’re able to get just a little bit louder too. The amount of control the DLM loudspeakers and DL1608 mixer provides is an absolute blessing in this kind of application.”

Tightrope Media Systems Drives Interactive Digital Signage at Choice Hotels Headquarters

Systems integration specialist Human Circuit, Inc. networks Tightrope Carousel system across two locations, and multiple conference rooms and common areas

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, September 22, 2014
Choice Hotels, the corporate parent of several well-known hotel chains in the United States, recently relocated its Maryland headquarters to the northern Washington, DC suburb of Rockville. The company occupies six floors of a newly built 10-story building, with a second corporate location in Phoenix, Arizona. With various conference spaces and thoroughfares to communicate across, Choice Hotels turned to systems integrator Human Circuit, Inc. to design a complete professional AV system with a dynamic and interactive digital signage network from Tightrope Media Systems.

Tightrope’s Carousel solution was selected for its interactive capabilities and ease of use, allowing Choice Hotels to customize outputs depending on the nature of the message for each location. The network serves three main corporate communication purposes: interactive wayfinding, historical education, and general information for visitors and personnel. The open nature of Carousel has also made it easy to incorporate business operations, such as Outlook integration for real-time schedule of meetings and events.

“We work with a number of signage companies and representatives for many different manufacturers,” said Kevin Filano, systems design engineer, Human Circuit, Inc. “Tightrope was an ideal choice for this project because Carousel is highly customizable, which was important given the targeted content across different locations. Their layouts are non-cluttered and elegantly designed, which works great for a corporate environment. Tightrope makes sure the end user can display the right amount of information without making it look too busy, while retaining a smooth and professional look.”

The main business operation is centered on the fourth floor, and is naturally the most visible part of the network. The main conference center and several reconfigurable meeting rooms rotate a variety of engaging content, but the interactive elements of the network are spread throughout the building. The wayfinding displays are found at elevator lobbies and stairwells along a staircase spanning all six floors. Visitors can view a floor map, daily schedule and page through an alphabetical staff directory to pinpoint floor, room and other pertinent information. The historical education displays also incorporate interactive elements, engaging both visitors and staff.

“Choice Hotels added an interactive museum area to play out video clips that educate on the history of the company,” said Filano. “A lot of thought went into the layout, color scheme and playout of these interactive elements for both the historical and wayfinding displays. We worked very closely with Tightrope to achieve that. Their programming services were instrumental in bringing everything together on time.”

According to Filano, the installation process was unusual as his team was working in tandem with general contractors and architects as the building was raised. This had the benefit of cleanly integrating the entire technology infrastructure, including the digital signage, into the overall architecture. However, there was no downtime to create punch lists and program systems, which made Tightrope’s professional services that much more critical to the signage network’s success.

“Normally, the contractor completes 90 percent of the job before we even come on site, but we were pulling cables and hanging displays while they were raising walls,” said Filano. “We had enough to manage on the AV installation side, so we took advantage of their services to enable the custom functionality of the various outputs, and assist with signage network configuration.”

The overall Carousel architecture for Choice Hotels is clean and network-friendly, using a virtual server cluster with intelligent software to drive content instead of a central computer. The robust network now extends to the Phoenix corporate location, with similar content created, managed and driven from the Rockville headquarters, where Carousel’s remote capabilities also enable network-wide troubleshooting from a central location. The scalable Carousel backbone ensures that Choice Hotels can expand to additional displays at the Phoenix location without significantly driving up costs, labor or operational complexity.

“One of the biggest benefits of Carousel is ease of use and learning curve, which is important as the network scales,” said Filano. “Choice Hotels has already had a handful of people move around in the company that were previously operating Carousel. With a number of different operators taking over the system, they have had no issues with those transitions.”

NEW YORK CITY’S EXCLUSIVE UNION LEAGUE CLUB UPGRADES TO ASHLY

Union_League_Club_NYCNEW YORK, NEW YORK: The Union League Club of New York City was founded by Union loyalists during the Civil War and has grown since then to become one of the city’s most exclusive clubs, where the public-minded members of New York’s upper class meet away from the bustle of urban life. Its elegant clubhouse on East 32nd Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan thus serves as an oasis, and the Union League recently refurbished many of its rooms to add modern audio/visual technology where appropriate. Based on its functionality and rock-solid reliability, A/V integration firm Audio Production Services (Amawalk, New York) specified an Ashly ne24.24M Protea™ DSP Matrix Processor and an Ashly ne4250.70 Network Four-Channel Amplifier for the Union League Club’s new system.

Although most of the clubhouse areas provide a refuge from technology, club members requested video and audio in one of the large lounge spaces, the nearby coffee bar, and some ancillary lounge spaces. Inputs to the new system are many and include all manner of video feeds, wireless microphones for events, and iPod® connectivity. Those inputs feed into an Ashly ne24.24M matrix processor, which handles all of the routing, mixing and equalization. Audio Production Services biased the modular I/O of the ne24.24M to accommodate the huge number of inputs, reserving just four outputs to feed a four-channel Ashly ne4250.70 amplifier. Those four amplifier channels power 70-volt RCF ceiling speakers in four separate zones.

“I’ve used Ashly products on many previous installations,” said Simon Nathan, president of Audio Production Services. “They are very flexible and easy to work with. In addition, they are reliable, which was critical for the Union League clubhouse. Ashly’s Protea processing worked well with Key Digital’s user interface technology and allowed us to give the staff an iPad that could control the new A/V system. In all, it was a straightforward design and an easy installation, and the client is happy with its sound and performance.”

ABOUT ASHLY AUDIO Ashly Audio Inc. is recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high quality & high performance signal processing equipment and power amplification for use in the commercial sound contracting and professional audio markets. The 40-year old company is headquartered in Webster, New York U.S.A.
