Classic Art Deco Theater is Reborn with Renkus-Heinz

Riverhead, NY – August 2014… On December 30, 1933, more than 2000 people attended the Suffolk Theater’s grand opening. Local media declared it “The Radio City Music Hall of Long Island.” The last remaining movie house built by architect R. Thomas Short, and the last remaining large art deco theater on Long Island, the Suffolk Theater entertained generations of moviegoers until closing its doors in 1987.

The building sat empty until 2005, when Dianne and Bob Castaldi purchased it, with a vision of creating a modern performing arts center. Recently reopened after a lengthy renovation project, the venue retains much of its interior décor and charm, while now presenting as a multi-use, state-of-the-art dinner theater with flexible seating, digital projection, and a surround sound system featuring Renkus-Heinz PNX and TRX Series loudspeakers.

The theater’s original raked seating was removed and replaced with a multi-tiered design that allows for varied configurations of tables and chairs, accommodating everything from concerts and performances to dinner theater or movie screenings.

The venue’s audio, video, and lighting systems were designed with that versatility in mind, explains systems designer Stuart J. Allyn of Irvington, NY-based A.D.R. Studios, Inc. “The goal was to provide smooth, even coverage throughout the entire audience area, with proper time domains that would have the sound emanating from the stage, regardless of the seating configuration.”

Allyn chose a pair of PNX121 two-way 12-inch loudspeakers for the main system, with two CFX218 subwoofers for low frequency reinforcement. Ten TRX62 boxes comprise the secondary surround system, as well as providing coverage to the upper and under balcony areas. The boxes were custom painted to blend seamlessly with the venue’s walls. The system was installed by Young Equipment Sales of Hauppauge, under the supervision of Charles Stursberg, Director of Audiovisual Theatrical Lighting and Theatrical Rigging Sales.

Allyn points to pattern control as a major factor in selecting the Renkus-Heinz system. “The TRX62 is my favorite over- and under-balcony system,” he says. “Their dispersion is exceptionally wide, particularly for a box with such a small footprint. The documentation on their coverage patterns is exceptionally true and reliable. Their trapezoidal arrays really do array beautifully.”

Coverage is pointless without great sound, of course. “Renkus-Heinz voices their boxes with a real belief in the human voice,” says Allyn. “When I hear vocals coming out of these boxes, they sound like they should even before I touch an EQ. That’s very important to me. Intelligibility, warmth, depth, character — that’s what the human voice is all about, and it translates to the instruments in the orchestra. If you get human voices to just sound right, you have done your work. And the Renkus-Heinz boxes do that beautifully.“

Belushi’s Comedy Club Installs PreSonus StudioLive AI Series System

Fort Myers, FL – August 2014… In a career that spans three decades, actor Jim Belushi has appeared in countless movies and television shows, including his hit ABC comedy According to Jim. What many fans may not know is that he has achieved success in another comedic role: that of club owner. The Comedy Bar, Belushi’s club in Chicago, is a popular spot for both tourists and locals alike.

Recently, Belushi got a chance to reprise his role as club owner when his cousin, Chris Karakosta, approached him about becoming a partner in a new restaurant he was opening in Fort Myers, Florida.

“I’d always liked the [Fort Myers] area,” says Belushi. “Then Chris told me the best part: The restaurant was opening in what used to be one of the biggest Irish pubs he’d ever seen. Two floors!” Soon after, Belushi’s Comedy Club, Fort Myers, opened its doors on the second floor above the Tilted Kilt restaurant.

Belushi is also a singer and musician with a demanding ear for superior live sound. His group The Sacred Hearts is the official house band for the House of Blues chain. Not surprisingly, as Belushi’s Comedy Club took shape as a venue where both comedy and live music would be performed, Belushi’s musical heritage influenced his demand that the club have the highest quality audio system anywhere — one versatile enough to handle live comedy, as well as musical performances.

To meet those demands, the club turned to Cape Coral, Florida, consultants Creative Sound and Lighting Solutions. After speaking with the owners regarding their live-sound requirements, Creative Sound and Lighting owner Tony Flammia recommended a PreSonus StudioLive™ AI-series Active Integration™ system for the house sound, including two StudioLive 328AI loudspeakers for the mains, one StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer, and a StudioLive 16.4.2AI 16-channel digital mixing system as the hub for sound throughout the venue.

“Because the 328AI is such a nice slim box, it doesn’t need a lot of space,” says Flammia. “We took the 328s and mounted them sideways and then rotated the horn, rotated the center.”

The StudioLive 16.4.2AI mixer enabled Flammia to set up various zones within the venue and time-align the system to seamlessly integrate them. “The unique thing about this installation is they’ve got the mains, ceiling speakers, a VIP room, and an outdoor area,” says Flammia. “We’ve time-aligned all the different areas of the venue to work alongside the mains. Everything is three milliseconds behind the mains. Your brain tells you that the source is coming from the stage. As the [sound from the] mains comes out, you don’t hear any reflections, even in the bathrooms. All the subgroups are actually set up as zones. The DSP inside the StudioLive AI-series mixer enables us to achieve this level of control.”

The StudioLive 16.4.2AI mixer’s wireless networking capabilities enable Belushi’s house engineer and guest engineers for the venue’s live bands to move around the facility while controlling all setup, tuning, and monitoring functions of the venue’s sound components using an iPad® or laptop. “The really cool thing about this project is the fact that when there is a comedy act, the sound guys literally are sitting there with their iPad,” says Flammia. “They have control over the background music for intros and outros and full control over the comedian’s vocal, and they can actually bring the main speakers up or down, the ceiling speakers, the VIP room, even the bathroom speakers. And because of the time-delay setup, it sounds like one source throughout the entire building.”

If the initial reviews of Belushi’s Comedy Club are any indication, the multi-talented performer has another hit on his hands, with the help of PreSonus’ StudioLive AI Active Integration system. Flammia concludes, “The system sounds great. It is punchy. Aesthetically there is no other speaker that we could have done this installation with that offers the same effect within that price range.”

Seattle’s Iconic Comet Tavern is Reborn with Mackie DLM Series Sound

Seattle, WA – July 2014… Since 1935, the Comet Tavern has been a fixture of Seattle’s storied Pike/Pine corridor. The well-worn wood bar of this venerable Capitol Hill pub has bent the elbows of generations of locals and visitors, and its stage has played host to multiple decades of Seattle music and culture.

When the Comet was shuttered late last year, many long-time Seattle residents feared it was another nail in the coffin of what local entrepreneur Dave Meinert refers to as the city’s “black hole of gentrification.” But thanks to Meinert and partner Jason Lajeunesse, the Comet has opened its doors once again. The landmark pub’s atmosphere remains relatively unchanged, though the club has added a food menu, and the old sound system has been replaced with a new distributed system featuring Mackie’s DLM Series loudspeakers.

As Lajeunesse explains, the new owners placed a high priority on continuing the Comet’s legacy. “The Comet has always served as a living room and gathering place for a lot of the local community, including musicians, artists, writers, actors, and other creative people,” he says. “We had the opportunity to step in and restore the club, and in doing so we knew we really wanted to pay homage to its history, including games, pool, and hosting live music. It was important to us that the Comet still resonates as a cultural gathering place for the community, and I think we’ve embraced that. It’s still a neighborhood living room.”

The Comet’s new sound system, designed and installed by Kelly Berry of Seattle-based K Berry and Associates, includes ten Mackie DLM8 full range powered loudspeakers. “We’ve configured the system into three zones, covering the bar, balcony, and main seating area,” Berry explains. “It gave us a really great distribution of sound. Right out of the box, it sounded great.” A pair of DLM12S powered subwoofers provide more than enough low end for the room. “The system was really easy to install, too,” Berry adds. “The SWM300 wall mount bracket made it a breeze.”

Versatility was an essential demand for the new sound system, and the DLM Series more than delivered. “We’re open from noon to 2:00 AM, seven days a week,” Lajeunesse explains. “We needed a system that could deliver great sound and consistent coverage 14 hours a day, at times when there are only eight people in the room, and when there are 250. With the new system, we’re able to consistently bring up the volume as needed, as the room fills up, without ever being too loud for one single person or table.”

Lajeunesse says the new DLM system has upgraded the Comet’s sound without affecting the club’s personality. “We were really pleased with the DLM8,” he concludes. “The speakers provided us with all the coverage we needed, but they’re low profile enough that we were able to tuck them into corners and areas where they didn’t interfere with the look and the vibe we were after.”

Shotoku Makes Gains With El Financiero ׀ Bloomberg TV

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM DELIVERS AUGMENTED REALITY SOLUTION FOR FINANCIAL NEWS BROADCASTER IN MEXICO CITY

Mexico City – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, has announced the recent installation of its highly regarded Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for a Virtual Studio at El Financiero|Bloomberg TV, a station based in Mexico City that broadcasts, through an alliance with Bloomberg NY, both worldwide and local financial-based programming to Mexico and Central America. It is used for augmented reality and virtual elements matched to the real studio.

“They don’t use a traditional lower third or a bumper to show some sponsored section of the news show,” explains Angélica Elizalde, sales executive and specialist in graphic solutions for Comtelsat. “Instead, they use the logo of the sponsor in augmented reality during the whole section — which is way more spectacular, since the anchor is interacting with the virtual element. Also, the anchors can present statistics and schemes that come out right from the floor of the studio — which is a simpler and more creative way to present the information to the audiences. And those graphics can get sponsored, too.”

“We knew the brand from other installations and knew it was a reliable and very stable system,” says Granada. “We were quite impressed because of the length of the crane and the possibilities it has for live production; and also by the fact that no other vendor has a product with the same quality, accuracy and level of service we are used to receive from Shotoku.”

The Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for Virtual Studio offers a unique set of VR features coupled with a sturdy twin arm structure that provides vibration-free, high performance with a single operator. The VR Dolly Crane System allows any studio to be easily transformed into a virtual environment without the need for targets on the ceiling, floors, or walls, or infrared sensors. They can make a very large range of movements without worrying about undesired bumping; plus they just need one operator to manage the whole system (nevertheless, they often use two people just to make sure, but most of the time is just one). Also, unlike some other systems, Shotoku guarantees that there won’t be any delay or loss on the receiving of the mechanical tracking data.”

Granada adds, “I have been a user for a few years, but I never worked with a crane system, so this was a challenge. Nevertheless, the system has proved to be as reliable as all other Shotoku products I know. Once you get to know it, it is fairly simple and straightforward to use. Overall, it’s easy to manage, it’s accurate and the final result is always impressive.”

Extron Now Shipping Five Input Audio Expansion Processor with AEC and Dante

Yamaha YCATS Training Moves Toward Future In Networking

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Training Sessions (YCATS) is moving in a new direction with their console training programs. This year, YCATS has created two new console classes in order to eliminate the repetition between the CL, QL, M7CL and LS9 seminars as these consoles share many of the same software features. The new classes will initially be held at HB Live during the first week of August, HB Live is sponsoring a CL/QL Series Essentials Class in North Haven, CT and ATR/Treehouse is sponsoring the same class in Warwick, RI.

In addition to the new Console Operation Levels, YCATS is adding “Digital Sound Reinforcement – Dante” and “CL/QL Series Essentials”. “DSR – Dante” is a one-day class covering design and use of Dante networks with Yamaha products as well as several third party products (i.e. Shure ULX-D and Aviom D800). “CL/QL Series Essentials” is a class for those who have been trained on the M7CL and LS9 and covers all new features with the CL and QL consoles and the set up of Dante networks.

Four Join Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems “A” Team

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) has announced the appointment of four industry notables to positions on the marketing and technical teams.

Steve Armstrong spent close to 20 years as an independent rep in the Northwest and Northern California representing many top lines including Dolby Lake, L-Acoustics, and NEXO. He also held the position of North American Director of Sales at JBL for 12 years in 1994. Previously, Steve was tour director for two major product roll outs and involved in the design and installation of several major installations, most notably, Bayside Church in Roseville, CA; Herbst Theater and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. In his new position as Speaker Systems Application Engineer at YCAS, he will support the NEXO product line as well as Yamaha branded speaker systems.

Chad Cooper began his career at Capitol Records in the A&R department during college. He then worked for the Walt Disney Company at the Disneyland Resort for the past 28 years as both a Live Sound Engineer/Technician and Manager, mixing upwards of ten thousand shows in his career at Disney, then becoming a manager in the technical services department in charge of the flagship Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park. As Applications Manager, Chad is responsible for YCAS Technical Support.

Patrick Killianey joined YCAS as Network Systems Applications Engineer in late 2013 with over 15 years of experience in Pro Audio, Automation, and Commercial Sound. Working with TASCAM, AMX and M-Audio, Patrick was involved in product development, market expansion, and customer education initiatives. He also spent seven years operating his own business – South Coast Logic – providing system design, project management, and automation programming services for premiere dealers across the country. Patrick’s focus at YCAS is on the mass transition towards networked audio, acting as an internal champion and an educator to the industry.

Marcel Mauceri has been appointed to the position of NUAGE Technical Marketing Specialist. His music and audio experience range from live performance, songwriting, and recording to audio post-production work for independent feature films. Prior to joining YCAS, Marcel held multiple positions over fourteen years, including Echo Digital Audio, a research and development company located in Santa Barbara, CA. where he managed global sales, interfaced with clients as the go–to tech person, and was a contributor to Echo product development and OEM projects for Mackie and Gibson guitar.
