NUAGE is a complete, flexible system that allows engineers to choose and combine components to perfectly match individual application and workflow requirements.

NUAGE is the first truly networkable recording system consisting of hardware work surface components, sleek interface, comprehensive visual feedback, networkable audio interface units, and a software-based digital audio workstation. It offers advanced processing capabilities and superior sonic quality. The Yamaha control surface features a combination of fader and main control units allowing for various system configurations, and the core of NUAGE is Steinberg’s award winning Nuendo digital audio workstation software. Coupled with the power of Dante, this advanced production system provides mix engineers a truly synergistic studio solution. Dante audio networking provides unrestricted system design and expandability both in the studio and in situations where audio is to be shared with live mixing systems.

A Dante Accelerator audio interface card can be installed in the computer running the Nuendo DAW to provide extra-low latency multi-channel audio data transfer capacity, advantageous when communicating with NUAGE I/O units. A secondary port can be used to provide redundant connections for failsafe reliability.

NUAGE provides intuitive operation and visual organization for enhanced
efficiency. Any 24� monitor can be used with the system. The system incorporates the computer LCD displays for “Extensive Console View� channel strip extension, customizable Nuendo shortcuts that can be freely assigned to numerous User Assignable Keys, Touch Slider functionality for instant channel navigation, touch sensitive faders and encoders, Channel Name Display, and Channel Color Bar. A precision jog wheel supports accurate, error-free editing on the master section.

NUAGE modular architecture and network audio interface enable broad system flexibility. Two types of control surface units can be used individually or in combination, according to system needs. Three types of high-end audio interfaces are available, used individually or in combination for up to 128 channels. 16-channel analog, 16-channel digital, and 8-channel analog + 8-channel digital can be controlled at once with two encoders per channel, or all encoders can be mapped to one or two highlighted channels in the Channel Setting Mode. NUAGE I/O also features advanced JetPLLâ„¢ jitter reduction technology for extremely low jitter and superior AD/DA resolution.

NUAGE benefits lead to uncompromised product quality and include 32-bit/192 kHz support for superior sonic quality (Nuendo 6 supports sampling rates up to 384 kHz). Advanced audio interface DSP hardware offers “True Integrated Monitoring� for ultra-low-latency monitoring. The DSP surround processing capabilities provide all the essentials for state-of-the-art surround sound including speaker/level display adjustments and base management. The power of native system processing allows a large number of plug-ins to be used simultaneously across multiple channels/tracks. Nuendo Syncstation provides sample-accurate synchronization for audio and video.

The system’s space-saving keyboard/mouse editing capabilities as well as compact rack-mount dimensions round out the unique NUAGE system.

A basic NUAGE system starts at a targeted MSRP of $18,000 and has an expected availability of second quarter of 2013.

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced that effective January 2013, Yamaha CL Series Digital Mixing Consoles and NEXO powered TD controllers equipped with NXDT104 Dante network cards will offer a new level of integration and control. Together, Yamaha and NEXO are developing this integration to allow NXAMP discovery and patching operations, currently requiring a computer running the Dante Controller software application, to be executed directly from the touch screen display of CL Series Consoles. The new advancement will be available with CL Series firmware update V1.5.

The NXAMP Powered TD Controller was initially developed by engineers from both companies combining years of expertise to create the NXDT104 Dante network card announced in March 2012. The card allows for Dante network protocol compatibility between CL consoles and NXAMPs and enables the console to communicate directly with the amplifier via the Dante network.

Woodland Park, NJ– FSR, a Passaic County-based manufacturer, has rallied behind fellow New Jerseyans in the wake of Sandy to provide relief for the superstorm’s victims.

Accompanied by a team of FSR volunteers, company president, Jan Sandri arrived at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Highlands, NJ on Friday, November 9 in vehicles packed with food, paper products, cleaning supplies, clothing and checks.

“Highlands is a small town adjacent to Sandy Hook with a permanent population of 5,000,� said Sandri. “The homes are primary residences, not vacation houses. The town was hit with 13.5’ of water, even before the storm surge came through. These people are our neighbors and have lost so much. It’s a very good feeling to be lending a helping hand.�

Sandri noted that Church volunteers helped unload the supplies as dozens of other cars lined up to drop off diapers, food and other urgently needed products.

“While outside I noticed a truck from Florida Power and Light (FPL) and questioned the driver about his trip,� continued Sandri. “He explained that he was from Texas but was using a FPL vehicle because his own hadn’t arrived yet. It’s wonderful to see the cooperation and help pouring into New Jersey.�

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY: Church of the Savior is a growing mid-size church nestled amid the bluegrass of Lexington, Kentucky. In order to support increased programming, the church raised funds to build an annex comprised of three high-tech classrooms anchored by an equally-high-tech foyer area. Kentucky-based Pro Sound & Lights designed a forward-thinking A/V system for the new space, but requests from the church’s knowledgeable liaison threw a wrench into the plans at the eleventh hour. Additional processing and amplifier channels would be needed, and Pro Sound & Lights’ systems engineer Chris Naughton accommodated the requested additions without going over budget by calling on an eight-channel Ashly ne8250.pe amplifier with optional onboard Protea(tm) DSP processing.

“All three rooms can be combined into one larger room, with all of the technology routed appropriately,” explained Naughton. “It’s functionally similar to a small conference center. Moreover, the foyer area – which will have a little coffeehouse and plenty of comfy places to hang out – can be used as a fourth classroom, so we included all of the A/V infrastructure there as well.” Naughton already had a processor and amplifier ordered when he received a call from Dave Grosz, Media engineer, for the media communications department at Asbury University and a member of Church of the Savior. “Dave knows his stuff. He’s behind one of the leading telecommunications programs in the country,” said Naughton. “He felt the new classrooms would be better served with JBL Control-series full-range loudspeakers paired with JBL Control-series subwoofers.”

At first, Naughton imagined that the easy fix would be to order a second four-channel amp to power the subwoofers, one per zone. But while he was revising the layout he realized that the processor on order had only six outputs. He needed eight outputs to do the crossovers. “That’s when I began to panic,” he laughed. “Contracts were signed, we were good to go, and now this! Money was very tight, and so I needed to find a solution that would not only work, but would work for not a lot more money than we had already committed to.”

Naughton did some research and realized that the Ashly ne8250.pe was the cost-effective solution that the project now cried out for. Within its two-rack unit frame, it offers eight 250-watt amplifier channels plus an on-board Protea digital matrix mixer & processor. He could keep the original processor, which was inextricably linked to the Extron control system to which the church had already agreed. Only four of its outputs, one per zone, would feed the Ashly ne8250.pe, which would supply the necessary crossover processing, along with modest delay and equalization. “No other manufacturer has a quality solution that is as affordable as the Ashly ne8250.pe,” said Naughton. “Despite the inclusion of the processing power, the ne8250.pe was still less expensive than two of the original four-channel amplifiers, which had no processing at all. In addition, Ashly’s shipping time was phenomenal. I received the unit two or three days after I ordered it. That gave me enough time to have the two original amplifiers rerouted back to the manufacturer!”

DIFFUSING / SCATTERING SOUND: Sound Diffusion Explained

Acoustics First has just released another in a series of videos to help explain acoustical principles using simple, easy to understand video demonstrations. This latest demonstration tackles the mystery of acoustic sound diffusion. Using an array of ping pong balls to represent sound visually, this video simply demonstrates what occurs when sound strikes the surface of an acoustic diffuser. First, you will see what happens when sound hits a flat reflective surface with no acoustical treatment. The balls all bounce at the same time and in the same direction. This represents what happens to the sound when it hits a flat reflective surface like a wall. Then you see what happens when sound hits an acoustic sound diffuser. You will immediately notice the energy of the wave of balls is scattered in all different directions as well as deflected at different time intervals. Diffusers, disperse or scatter the sound like crowd control, preserving the sound to maintain sound clarity without destructive interference. This is the basic principle behind acoustic sound diffusion.
