St. Joseph Fullerton Hosts Traditional and Contemporary Mass with Community

Founded in 1850 by German immigrants, St. Joseph Fullerton is a Roman Catholic church located just north of Baltimore in Perry Hall, Maryland. St. Joseph’s current building, an octagonal structure with around-the-sanctuary seating, and imaginative décor has impressed parishioners and visitors for more than 40 years.

St. Joseph’s original sound system used ceiling loudspeakers to cover the sanctuary and had been augmented with loudspeakers in the organ chamber. However, coverage was uneven in many locations and very poor in the back of the church.

Through a referral from another church, St. Joseph’s contacted Mike Flaherty of Nelson White Systems in Baltimore. Flaherty recommended a system based on Community’s Entasys column line arrays. He had used Entasys in other church sound systems and knew they would provide smooth coverage throughout the sanctuary and project sound evenly all the way to the rear while minimizing unwanted reflections from the ceiling and floor.

Flaherty chose left and right double-stacked Entasys to cover the central areas of the sanctuary supplemented by a pair of single Entasys to cover the far left and right. He added two Community VLF212 Subwoofers to supplement the system’s low-frequency performance for the church’s weekly contemporary mass. And, he chose Community’s dSPEC Networked Loudspeaker Processor to provide system equalization.

Since Flaherty had not used Entasys in a semi-circular sanctuary like St. Joseph’s, he asked Community’s Technical Applications Group to review his design. Community’s analysis showed that the design would achieve its goals of even coverage and uniform sound levels throughout the church.
Completed in late spring of 2013, St. Joseph’s new sound system includes Crown amplifiers and a Shure automatic mixer so that operation can be “hands off” for most services. For the weekly contemporary mass, Flaherty provided a special dSPEC input with a compressor section to manage the level. Musical groups can connect their own mixers to this input.

At the church’s request, Community custom-painted the Entasys columns to a color chosen to complement the carpet and trim. Flaherty says the church is very pleased with the results. “They’ve gotten nothing but complements about the appearance and the sound,” he said. “Those people who were sitting in the dead spots from the old system can finally hear everything.” Flaherty was also impressed with the musicality of the system. “The spoken word clarity is excellent,” he said, “and the subs add a pleasing low-frequency warmth to the contemporary service.”

Esteemed Cleveland Church Opens a New Chapter with VARIA

Cleveland, OH – August 2013… Roots run deep at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, a cornerstone of Cleveland community and worship since 1931. Over the years, the church’s pulpit has played host to such luminaries as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

But this congregation with a strong sense of tradition is equally forward-thinking. The church’s 1,500-seat sanctuary, constructed in 1954, recently underwent an in-depth renovation, enhancing sound and vision with the addition of HD cameras, a switcher, and large-scale video screens, as well as a new Renkus-Heinz VARIA modular point source loudspeaker system.

As Tom George, Director of Installations for installer Eighth Day Sound, explains, the sound reinforcement aspect of the project presented some unique challenges. “Although the exterior of the building has a peaked roof, the sanctuary’s ceiling is flat, and relatively low – only around 25 feet in height. So going with a traditional line array would have created line-of-sight issues. Moreover, we were faced with a 400-pound weight restriction, which made the design even more problematic.”

With a need to ensure musicality for both its traditional gospel choir and plugged-in bands, as well as high intelligibility for all spoken aspects of the program, VARIA’s feature set seemed a good fit for the large, acoustically challenging space. With VARIA’s modular and flexible enclosures, Eighth Day could create a system to deliver the coverage of a traditional line array, but using fewer cabinets, thereby decreasing weight, visual impact, and cost.

The flown system consists of six VAX 101-7/6 (7.5 degree), two VAX101-22/69, and two VAX101-22 912 VARIA loudspeakers. The result is powerful, even coverage across the congregation’s main floor and balcony, from the front rows to the rear wall 100 feet away.

“When we listened to the box, we were convinced,” says George. “VARIA met the challenge – it delivered the coverage we needed, along with the power and performance. It looks great, and it sounds great.”

Olivet’s recent improvements mark Phase One of their in-depth renovation, with improved lighting and Web streaming next on the agenda. Through it all, elevating the live sound experience has been key for the Cleveland church.

PixelFLEX LED Panels Brighten Sunday Service

Thousands crowded into Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis recently for a Sunday service not soon to be forgotten. PixelFLEX LED Curtains adorned the church stage with a vivid, bright and high-quality video screen celebrating the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, adding a more lifelike feel to the service.

Flexible in all directions, PixelFLEX LED Curtains are able to bend and shape around structures for a more creative display, which is why Tony Morris, director of Technical Services for Bellevue, decided to utilize the panels for the performance backdrop.

“The flexibility really provides many advantages over the hard, inflexible panels,” said Morris. “Install and tear-down is extremely easy. Additionally, the rigging hardware on the top is simple to attach to the truss and the interconnection between the panels is all very straightforward.”

The production team cleared out the 75 ft. deep and 130 ft. wide stage, which usually has a 65 piece orchestra and a 200 voice choir, to have a clean slate for creating the atmosphere desired. The panels (20mm- 5 Panels) were used as a backdrop flown from a truss to enhance colors behind the singers, small band and pastor presenting during service that morning. The church’s stage has a trim height of about 45 ft. above the stage and the crew trimmed out the panels at 25 ft.

Videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection – PixelFLEX LED Curtains are available from low resolution to high resolution, allowing users to demonstrate simple effects or elaborate videos. The high caliber visual components of the curtains come with equally impressive customer service assistance and without the need for an extensive budget.

Pleased with the overall ease of set-up and tear-down, as well as the accessibility of the product, Morris said they are looking at additional ways of using PixelFLEX in the future.

“It’s amazing just how bright those things are,” said Morris. “We plan to try to incorporate the PixelFLEX panels in more elaborate productions moving forward to maximize the worship experience for our congregation.”

Bellevue Baptist Church, founded in 1903 and based out of Memphis, Tenn., is led by Pastor Dr. Steve Gaines and provides in church services as well as podcasts and television services for its members.
