ICONYX Brings Clarity To Landmark Massachusetts Buddhist Temple

Raynham, MA – December 2014…  In the late 1990s, a group of Theravada Buddhist faithful in the Boston area came together with the goal of forming a temple and meditation center. The community hunted for nearly a decade to find a suitable facility, locating briefly in Boston, Braintree, Quincy, Waltham, and Watertown. Finally, in April 2006, a 55-acre property was purchased in Raynham, and construction began on Wat Nawamintararachutis. The NMR Buddhist Meditation Center, as it is known locally, has grown to become the largest Thai Buddhist temple outside of Thailand, and a destination for Buddhists across the United States and the world.

The complex features six main buildings, including a multi-purpose hall used for spoken word presentations, musical performances, and other events. As Michael Waitt, Project Manager for Chicopee, MA-based systems installers Valley Communications Systems, explains, the hall presented a number of acoustical challenges. “It’s a large, open room, about 50 feet square, with a 20 foot ceiling, tiered granite floors, and a glass wall across the back,” says Waitt. “Needless to say, it’s a very reflective environment, and the acoustics don’t lend themselves to good spoken word intelligibility.”

The room called for a system that could address the challenges of this very reflective environment, while being as visually unobtrusive as possible within the ornately appointed space.

The system, designed by Brian Masiello of Acentech, features a pair of ICONYX IC24R-II digitally steered arrays mounted to either side of the small stage area, providing uniform coverage across the entire room. “There really isn’t an audience area, per se,” Waitt observes, “so our main objective was to steer the sound into the center of the hall, and direct it away from the walls and windows.”

Waitt reports that temple officials have been exceptionally pleased with the system. “The IC24 columns blend in so well with the décor, they are barely noticeable, and coverage is consistent to every corner of the room.”

Event Enterprises Supplements NEXO M28 Arsenal, Adds Yamaha QL5 and DSRs

Event Grant Cambridge NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Event Enterprises is a full-service production company focusing on meeting their customers needs with utmost professionalism and the highest quality of service. With offices in Cincinnati, OH and Bellevue, KY, the company maintains a vast inventory of industry-standard, current event production equipment, coupled with an extensive dealer network and affiliations. The company recently took delivery of 12 NEXO STM M28 speakers to augment their existing NEXO box count, which has grown to 80.

“We were looking to increase our PA inventory to accommodate the demand of multiple festivals/stages/jobs happening simultaneously and were looking to dive into something with a little hotter output and farther throw than the NEXO GEO S12, states Grant Cambridge, Managing Director, Event Enterprises. The M28s could provide us with that need and seemed to make logistical sense for most of our applications. Financially, they also allowed us to make a comfortable initial investment into the STM franchise with the ability to “add on” and grow the rig with the additions of any B112s or M46s in the future. Our maiden voyage with the new boxes was a country show with headliners Dustin Lynch and Frankie Ballard, and out of the box, both front of house guest engineers enjoyed their day with them.”

Event upped their Yamaha DSR speaker inventory to 24, utilizing the DSRs for a variety of applications. “While the DSRs do see a lot of smaller “speaker on stick” gigs as well as corporate applications, we use them just as frequently for wedges as mains, Cambridge says. We do so many 5k, 10k, half/full marathon events where we line up the streets at the start and finish lines that the DSRs work perfectly for. We recently did a half marathon event earlier this month based around Veterans Day, and on a very cold Saturday morning we deployed DSRs down the start/finish line for 400 ft., and in 18 degree temperatures, they worked flawlessly for five hours in the elements.”

Cambridge said the Yamaha QL5 digital audio console was purchased primarily for the company’s rental inventory and in-house engineers to utilize in the field. “We have all taken a liking to Yamaha digital desks at our company and thought this was a nice “next step” for us, having gotten a lot of miles out of LS9s and M7s, notes Cambridge. Because of our familiarity with the Yamaha OS and internal workings within their digital desks and the direct functionality with the Dante network, we thought this would be a wise investment moving forward. The QL was put to use the minute it arrived, both by our own guys’ use well as fulfilling rider requests.”

Matrox PowerDesk Desktop Management Software Turns 20

Robust, field-proven application gives professional users of Matrox multi-display hardware practical, stable, easy-to-use configuration tools

Matrox® Graphics Inc. today announced the 20th anniversary of its core desktop management software Matrox PowerDesk™ that lets users of Matrox graphics cards, external multi-display adapters and display wall products easily configure and manage multi-monitor setups. The latest products to include PowerDesk are the new Matrox C-Series cards — C420, the world’s fastest fanless quad-output card, and C680, a high-performance six-head card with board-to-board framelock.

PowerDesk_2_front_screenshot_475pix

PowerDesk is designed to provide superior stability and ease of use. It includes a comprehensive set of tools to control a wide array of configurations including stretched or independent desktops, clone mode, pivot, bezel management, and edge overlap. Advanced features such as drag & drop functionality and unattended install simplify multi-display configuration management and shorten set-up times for single- and multi-system deployments. A PowerDesk API is available to third-party software developers and OEMs who wish to incorporate PowerDesk features into their own applications.

“In the early 90s Matrox led the industry by inventing the first graphics processor capable of supporting multiple monitors, addressing a major productivity hurdle by expanding the amount of information that could be viewed at one time. With that innovation came another major breakthrough, Matrox PowerDesk desktop management software, which let users easily customize their multi-display setups,” said David Chiappini, VP R&D, Matrox Graphics Inc. “That software has evolved into a formidable asset over time and is an important component sought by IT administrators, AV integrators and industrial system builders when upgrading corporate PCs, installing display walls and specifying multi-display cards.”

“Matrox has long supported professional users with superior hardware, premium technical assistance, long product life cycles and the easy-to-use PowerDesk software,” said Caroline Injoyan, business development manager, Matrox Graphics Inc. “When we had the new C-Series line of multi-display graphics card on the drawing board, it was clear that the hardware had to strike the perfect balance between video output density, performance and power consumption; and that the Matrox PowerDesk software had to be implemented so that customers will continue to benefit from the exceptional stability, usability and versatility they rely on.”

Paragon 360 Completes Total Audio Overhaul at Enid, Oklahoma’s Emmanuel Baptist Church With HARMAN’s Crown Amplifiers, BSS Audio Processing and JBL Loudspeakers

HARMAN_EmmanuelBaptistENID, Oklahoma – Since its founding in the early 1980s, Emmanuel Baptist Church has grown into a strong congregation that hosts three worship services on Sundays alone and activities that serve a broad range of adults, youth, students and other groups in the community. The church was overdue for an A/V/L system renovation and turned to Springfield, Missouri integrator, Paragon 360 for an upgraded audio system featuring HARMAN’s Crown, BSS Audio and JBL components to meet the needs of its contemporary worship environment.

“This project was a full renovation with a major architectural redesign of the entire worship center. It involved new audio, acoustics, lighting, staging and video systems as well as new scenic elements custom designed for the church,” said Mark Coble, Audio/Acoustics Design and Commissioning specialist at Paragon 360. For this project, Coble and his design/build team needed to satisfy the requirements of three distinct groups: those attending traditional services with a choir; a more blended worship experience with praise singers and a band; and a modern, contemporary worship service.

Coble also noted that Emmanuel Baptist Church’s pastor likes to deliver passionate sermons and wanted to get his voice down to a whisper and still be heard by all the church’s congregants. “Before the update, he felt like he had to yell at times to get everyone to hear him.” In addition, Coble noted that the system had to be more than just a “house PA” – it needed to have the capabilities of a concert sound rig. “The church hosts touring artists and didn’t want to have to deal with them bringing in their own gear. They needed a system that would have a large input count and deliver the high SPL that is often required for these performances.”

Before undertaking the project, church officials had asked Coble specifically about JBL and Crown based on their previous positive experiences in other venues. “We of course were well familiar with the capabilities of HARMAN gear and have had a lot of success with it. Since this had to be a really dynamic PA, I knew that JBL VERTEC® line arrays and Crown amps would be the perfect fit for this application.”

Paragon 360 deployed eight VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements and a VT4883 dual-12-inch subcompact arrayable subwoofer in three main flown clusters each at the left, center and right of the auditorium. Two JBL STX828S subwoofers were placed in custom subwoofer enclosures located in the face of the stage and four AC28/26 compact 2-way loudspeakers serve as overhead monitors for the choir. Nine AC25 ultra-compact loudspeakers deliver under-balcony fill and four STX812M 12-inch stage monitors cover the pulpit/stage area.

Seven Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers power the main line arrays and subwoofers. Two Crown DCi Series 4|600 amplifiers drive the under-balcony and monitor loudspeakers, with a DCi 2|600 amp handling the choir monitors. The amps and speakers are networked using a BSS BLU-160 Soundweb London Signal Processor with BLU link in conjunction with a BLU-BOB break-out box output expander.

“Once we knew that we were going with JBL VERTEC, the Crown I-Tech HD amps were a natural fit,” Coble stated. “We knew they would deliver the kind of horsepower the installation required and we wanted to take advantage of the amps’ built-in VERTEC factory presets to optimize the system.”

In addition to the new audio system, Coble and his crew also did a significant amount of work adding the necessary acoustical treatments to optimize the sound of the sanctuary.

“The rig sounds great and everyone is really happy with the performance,” Coble concluded. “We truly realized our goal of transforming the space for a new generation of churchgoers.”

NEW HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH BELIEVES IN ASHLY

New_Hope_Baptist_InteriorGRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – NOVEMBER 2014: Founded in 1934 by a small collection of the faithful who opened up their living rooms every Sunday in the bustling Michigan town of Grand Rapids, New Hope Baptist Church has grown to a congregation of over 800 active members. To better accommodate its members, the church recently underwent a comprehensive renovation of its 750-seat sanctuary and associated overflow and ancillary use rooms. A new sound system centered on Ashly Audio processing, amplification, and user control is a centerpiece of the project and gives New Hope congregants exceptional intelligibility for spoken word, along with musical transcendence for the New Hope band and praise choir. Critically, the Ashly gear came in at a price point that allowed the church to meet its needs reliably, without breaking the project’s budget. Pro Audio Inc., of nearby Grandville, Michigan designed and installed the system for New Hope Baptist Church.

“The performance of Ashly gear is top-notch and yet its cost is very reasonable,” said Ken Reinecke, owner of Pro Audio Inc. “That’s a rare combination. In terms of sound quality, Ashly’s processing and amplification is transparent. What goes in is what comes out, plus whatever dynamics or equalization I’ve dialed in. And the gear can run at 96kHz for super critical situations. Programming Ashly’s Protea DSP platform is straightforward. I just drag and drop whatever processing I need, and drag appropriate inputs to appropriate outputs. Linking groups is also handy. Ashly gear is also tremendously reliable – it basically never breaks or fails.” Because space at New Hope Baptist Church was at a premium, it also helped that Reinecke could fit all of the system’s processing and amplification in just six rack spaces.

A new Soundcraft Si Performer 3 console serves as the user interface in the sanctuary itself. From there, an Ashly ne8800 8×8 Network DSP Protea™ Processor handles all of the loudspeaker settings for the sanctuary’s new JBL VRX928LA eight-inch, two-way line array system with JBL 915S subs. The stereo line array is powered by a single Ashly nXe 3.04 network four-channel amplifier rated at 3,000W per channel, providing ample power to the main sanctuary system. Additionally, output from the console feeds an Ashly Pema 8250 combination 8×8 Matrix Protea processor and eight-channel 250-Watt amplifier. The Pema 8250 takes additional inputs, such as wall jacks for microphones or music players that are located in the narthex and other out rooms. The versatile eight-channel Pema 8250 handles all of the audio routing, signal processing, and amplification for New Hope Baptist’s two nurseries, its nursing room, the bathrooms, and the narthex.

Four Ashly WR-5 programmable wall-mounted remote controls located strategically around the out rooms provide customized, intuitive control of those inputs, as well as of the sound from the sanctuary. “The nice thing about that arrangement is that folks can make changes in all those rooms without bothering the sound tech,” said Reinecke. “While the main system is controlled entirely from the Soundcraft console, the church staff can use the mic inputs and the Ashly WR-5 remote controls to play music or have a standalone PA for meetings and small events in those out rooms.”

ABOUT ASHLY AUDIO Ashly Audio Inc. is recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high quality & high performance signal processing equipment and power amplification for use in the commercial sound contracting and professional audio markets. The 40-year old company is headquartered in Webster, New York U.S.A.
