Florida Baptist Church Converts (A/D) with Symetrix

OCALA, FLORIDA – AUGUST 2014: The sound system at Trinity Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida is quite sophisticated for a sanctuary that seats approximately 800 congregants. It delivers left-center-right imaging to nearly every seat from multiple loudspeaker positions, including six time-delayed left-center-right zones that cover the areas farthest from the pulpit. This system was installed by Pro Sound & Video in 2004 and although the loudspeakers and amplifiers have held up well, the original DSP processing system that performed the complex routing and filtering did not. Florida-based Pro Sound & Video, Inc. replaced the original processing system with two Symetrix Radius 12×8 Dante™ network audio DSPs and augmented their sixteen combined outputs with two SymNet xOut 12 audio output expansion boxes. All of the units network seamlessly via Dante and replace all of the old analog processing, with plenty of processing power to spare for improvements.

“The system at Trinity Baptist is really nice with almost every seat getting a left-center-right experience,” said Michael Frazee, project manager with Pro Sound & Video. “However, the old processing system was based on a system of five digital processors that were cross wired with analog and AES patches to share various signals between the processors. This worked well for a long time, but one of the main processors went bad, and since the original components are out of production, it became clear that a new system would be required. To say the least, the Symetrix new generation of open architecture, Dante networking processors would afford us a considerable amount of signal handling flexibility to handle the complex processing tasks required for the multi-zone LCR system.”

The required processing includes equalization, distribution, and crossovers for the various speaker zones, which are comprised of the main house system, distributed LCR systems, stage monitors, and additional recording and general distribution mixes. Two Radius 12×8 DSP and two xOut 12 audio output expansion units form one integrated processing network via Dante with 24 inputs and 40 outputs. Programming the system, despite its complexity, was straightforward using Symetrix’ Composer software. “Circumstances in this case necessitated my involvement at the programming level. The Composer software was very predictable, but when I ran into a few snags, I contacted the tech staff at Symetrix, and they were very helpful in resolving programming issues.”

Coeur d’Alene Church of the Nazarene Elevates Its Sound System With HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers and Soundcraft Digital Consoles

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d’Alene Church of the Nazarene has served its parishioners since 1941, with roots going back to the first group of Nazarenes who congregated in the region in 1912. Like many houses of worship, the church had been making do with an inadequate, practically antiquated sound system until it brought in Spokane, Washington’s Hoffman Pro Systems and HARMAN Professional for an audio revival.

“The sanctuary literally had two wall-mounted speaker boxes to provide coverage to the entire main floor, balcony, under balcony and the church’s extended side wings,” said Hoffman Pro Systems general manager Dave Kenagy. “To say it was insufficient for the church’s current needs, which include providing sound for a full praise band, would be an understatement.”

Not so for the current system, specified by designer/installer David Lewis which features a Soundcraft Si Expression 3 digital console, Crown XTi 2 Series amplifiers, JBL VRX Series and additional loudspeakers, dbx PMC16 Personal Monitor Controllers and AKG K240 MKII headphones.

The Soundcraft Si Expression 3 has a MADI card installed and provides 32 inputs from the floor as well as local inputs at front of house for playback from various audio sources. A Soundcraft Stagebox is located at the front of the pulpit/stage area, linked to the console via a HARMAN BLU-Link card. Two dbx PMC16 Personal Monitor Controllers connected to the front of house via Cat6 cable enable the drummer and guitar/bass player to control and balance their own individual monitor levels, which Kenagy notes helps to keep the overall stage volume lower and easier to mix.

The Si Expression 3 handles the front of house and all monitor mixes. “The church volunteer staff had to make the move from their old analog console to digital,” noted Kenagy. “Although they’re not audio professionals, the board’s straightforward control layout and ability to store and recall snapshots made it easy for them.”

Three JBL VRX 932LA-1 Constant Curvature loudspeakers and two VRX918S subwoofers are hung as the main center cluster. Two VRX928LA loudspeakers are used for balcony fill, with three AC18/26 wall-mountable loudspeakers employed for under-balcony fill. Two AC18/95 wall-mountable loudspeakers are used for front side fill where the seating wraps around the front corners of the stage. In addition, an AC26 compact loudspeaker is mounted on stage and aimed back at the choir area. The loudspeakers are powered by a total of five Crown XTi 6002, XTi 4002 and XTi 1002 amplifiers.

Lewis noted that the Coeur d’Alene Church of the Nazarene is “extremely happy with the new system. Aside from the fact that it’s a night and day difference from their old setup sonically, for the first time it enables the church to mix the praise band the way they should be heard and it gives the pastor and the speakers the freedom of wireless movement.”

Another benefit which was unforeseen by Lewis and the church’s staff: the sound quality is so clear throughout the entire sanctuary that fewer people are using the church’s assistive hearing devices.

Since that time, PNTA has expanded staff and capabilities to provide a wealth of services for customers nationally. Employee-owned since 2008, the Company has increased its services to include audio, video, and lighting. As part of its recent growth, PNTA has joined the Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. dealer network adding the new Yamaha QL Digital Audio Console to their ever-growing Yamaha arsenal.

With an expert technical services staff, PNTA installs and repairs equipment and supports both non-profit and private customers through their Event Services Department providing production requirements for events of all sizes. Masters at their craft, the Event Services staff enriches the company with backgrounds in systems design, lighting design, sound design, set design, stage management, equipment repair, event design and production, and graphic arts and design.
PNTA is located in a 20,000 square-foot facility near downtown Seattle. The facility notably includes a sizeable brick and mortar retail store supporting its dealer activity for leading entertainment and live production manufacturers, now including Yamaha Commercial Audio products. The company has an active walk-in customer business seeking to buy lighting, audio, video, staging and special effects, drapery and decorative fabrics, as well as an extensive assortment of consumables.

“We did an exhaustive internal review of what audio vendor we needed to strategically add to best accelerate our market progress in growing our overall audio business, states Dave Vaught, Event Services Production Manager at PNTA. We were particularly interested in broadening our offering in professional products appealing to our client base. We focused those efforts initially in audio control and sound reproduction as we needed more tools for sale, rental, and event services support. With the substantial market position and reputation of Yamaha and its many new and highly regarded products recently introduced, the answer became clear. We are happy to have become a Yamaha dealer and integrator of Yamaha’s Commercial Audio Systems products.”

Vaught said that PNTA wanted to add consoles that they expected to see high rental demand from for both existing customers and customers travelling into the state of Washington. “With the announcement of the QL Series, we found a very forward-thinking technological capability in a footprint that was easily transportable while being exceedingly powerful. The expandability of the QL Series clinched our choice and buying depth at key levels. Based on our client history, every need we could think of could be answered by some or all of the features of Yamaha QL desks. We were impressed with a number of the features, including onboard recording, signal and effect processing, auto-mixing, and iPad integration.” For rentals and event services, PNTA also invested in a speaker line extension, moving into the Yamaha DXR and DXS Speaker Series.

“While our company size has grown along with the expanded services we now offer, PNTA retains what we started with when we first opened our doors—a dedication to meeting the needs of our valued customers and finding creative solutions to tough problems,” states Richard Carlson, President. “By adding Yamaha products to our product line, we can now offer the ultimate in quality and reliability to our audio customers. Yamaha consoles are specified on many riders and fill rental needs as well as being versatile for our production needs.”
