CLEAR-COM LAUNCHES FREESPEAK II™ DECT-BASED DUPLEX WIRELESS INTERCOM SYSTEM

At IBC 2014 Clear-Com® will announce the launch of FreeSpeak II™ wireless intercom system, an enhanced DECT-based offering that operates in multiple license-free DECT bands from 1.897-1.933GHz. FreeSpeak II delivers improved roaming capability for reliable wireless connections, superior digital ‘Clear-Com Sound’ for clear intelligibility and ultimate audio comfort, and innovative intercom features that make it a high performance wireless option.
The system is ideal for deployment across large-scale, multi-zone production areas typically required in live events, broadcast and sports production.

More Users, Same Flexibility

FreeSpeak II allows large numbers of wireless beltpack users to simultaneously roam across an expansive production area without compromising on performance. Similar to
its predecessor, FreeSpeak II can be implemented as a standalone base station wireless
system or as an integrated wireless solution within Eclipse HX matrices, known
as FreeSpeak II Integra. When using the base station, up to 20 full-duplex wireless
beltpacks can be connected; in an integrated matrix setup, as many as 50
full-duplex wireless beltpacks can be used at the same time by strategically
placing 10 or more distributed remote antennas to create an expansive coverage
zone. These beltpack users are then able to directly communicate with any other
remote or local matrix panel or other wireless or wired beltpack user who is on
the Eclipse HX Matrix System network.

New Hardware, Better Experience

FreeSpeak II leverages the existing base station from its predecessor that has been updated to work with the new beltpacks and new active antennas. All-new five-channel,
full-duplex FS II-BP wireless beltpack was uniquely designed for the rigorous
demands of large-scale operations and continuous communication use. Ergonomically
positioned controls, intuitive operation and rugged housing make the beltpack
ideal for extended use under harsh conditions. Beltpacks are IP-65 rated for
water and dust resistance for mobile productions. The Li-Ion battery for the
beltpack can last over 18 hours on a full charge. Beltpack operations including
battery health, RF status and Antenna link can be monitored in real-time via
the base station or Eclipse HX version 7.6 software.

The newly-designed Active Antenna provides the cellular roaming capability that keeps wireless users connected to the base station or to the Integra Solution. Enhancements to
the antenna systems now offer a much improved wireless performance and thereby
delivering a reliable wireless connection for mobile intercom users. Locally-powered
Antennas can be positioned up to 3,200ft away, or 800ft away when centrally
powered from the base station. Five way Antenna Splitters extend the base station
to create an expansive coverage area with up to 10 antennas.

Crystal-clear Sound, Ultimate Audio Comfort

FreeSpeak II beltpack users can continue enjoying the highly-intelligible and digitally-clear “Clear-Com Sound at 7kHz “commentator” audio bandwidth. This level of sound
quality offers excellent audio experience and reduces the strain on the user’s ears after extended usage.

Simon Browne, Director of Product Management, Clear-Com, said, “FreeSpeak is a proven duplex wireless solution for large-scale, multi-zone production areas. The introduction of the redesigned FreeSpeak II Beltpack and Antenna provides rugged and ergonomic operation, together with greatly improved radio and audio clarity that will delight our wireless users.”

The FreeSpeak II family of products, together with a wide range of other Clear-Com solutions, will be available for demonstration on Stand 10.D29 at IBC 2014.

Shotoku Makes Gains With El Financiero ׀ Bloomberg TV

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM DELIVERS AUGMENTED REALITY SOLUTION FOR FINANCIAL NEWS BROADCASTER IN MEXICO CITY

Mexico City – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, has announced the recent installation of its highly regarded Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for a Virtual Studio at El Financiero|Bloomberg TV, a station based in Mexico City that broadcasts, through an alliance with Bloomberg NY, both worldwide and local financial-based programming to Mexico and Central America. The sale was facilitated through long-time Shotoku dealer Comtelsat, based in Mexico City with offices in US, Brazil and Central America, to help the station deliver stunning graphics and visuals to viewers.

According to Ricardo Granada, IT & TV support manager, El Financiero|Bloomberg TV, the station is using the TK-53LVR system, alongside a Vizrt Virtual Studio solution, Grass Valley LDX camera dedicated to the Shotoku system, and a Kayak production switcher, as an augmented reality system, for the graphics and statistics, as well as logos of the station’s sponsors in some sections. It is used for augmented reality and virtual elements matched to the real studio.

“They don’t use a traditional lower third or a bumper to show some sponsored section of the news show,” explains Angélica Elizalde, sales executive and specialist in graphic solutions for Comtelsat. “Instead, they use the logo of the sponsor in augmented reality during the whole section — which is way more spectacular, since the anchor is interacting with the virtual element. Also, the anchors can present statistics and schemes that come out right from the floor of the studio — which is a simpler and more creative way to present the information to the audiences. And those graphics can get sponsored, too.”

“We knew the brand from other installations and knew it was a reliable and very stable system,” says Granada. “We were quite impressed because of the length of the crane and the possibilities it has for live production; and also by the fact that no other vendor has a product with the same quality, accuracy and level of service we are used to receive from Shotoku.”

The Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for Virtual Studio offers a unique set of VR features coupled with a sturdy twin arm structure that provides vibration-free, high performance with a single operator. The VR Dolly Crane System allows any studio to be easily transformed into a virtual environment without the need for targets on the ceiling, floors, or walls, or infrared sensors. Reliable, accurate and immediate VR data, including pan/tilt, zoom, focus and X/Y camera date is sent to the graphic computer via an RS422 cable. A Pan Bar control unit maximizes optimal pan & tilt operation. The TK-53LVR also features Shotoku’s unique SPi-Touch 2 point calibration system for quick set-up.

“We’ve been dealers for Shotoku for a number of years, and we have always preferred the system because of its reliability and accuracy in the mechanical tracking data –it’s just the best,” adds Elizalde. “They can have a 360-degree tracking of virtual elements; the arm of the crane is totally vibration free (no matter the length of it, which is quite large). They can make a very large range of movements without worrying about undesired bumping; plus they just need one operator to manage the whole system (nevertheless, they often use two people just to make sure, but most of the time is just one). Also, unlike some other systems, Shotoku guarantees that there won’t be any delay or loss on the receiving of the mechanical tracking data.”

Granada adds, “I have been a user for a few years, but I never worked with a crane system, so this was a challenge. Nevertheless, the system has proved to be as reliable as all other Shotoku products I know. Once you get to know it, it is fairly simple and straightforward to use. Overall, it’s easy to manage, it’s accurate and the final result is always impressive.”

FOR-A Switcher Meets Growing Technical Demands for First Baptist Church Oviedo

Cypress, CA – Established in the 1800s, First Baptist Oviedo is a longstanding Florida-based house of worship that has drastically altered its use of technology in recent years. In 2009, First Baptist Oviedo built a 2,700-seat worship center. Since that time, the church has delivered its message to a wider audience through live streaming, sermon archiving, and the production of podcasts on its website, as well as through its weekly shows on local television.

Recently, the church was in the market for a new video switcher to help run its productions more efficiently. Orlando-based video equipment specialist Encore Broadcast recommended the house of worship look at FOR-A’s HVS-390HS video switcher. Pleased with what they saw, the church purchased the HVS-390HS and began using the unit earlier this year in February. First Baptist Oviedo has been impressed with how the switcher has improved operations in its HD facility.
“We came from having a small switcher with only eight inputs. Our technological demands have rapidly grown with the production of our live broadcasts, and we needed a new switcher that could handle that,” said Josh Felix, the church’s director of technical arts. “We narrowed it down to two choices: FOR-A’s HVS-390HS and Ross Video’s Carbonite. Both switchers met our minimum requirements – each were 2 M/E units with full HD-SDI capabilities. However, a few features of FOR-A’s switcher stood out to us, one being its built-in color corrector on four channels, which has been huge for us. Another perk of the HVS-390HS is its built-in scalers, which allows us to easily scale SD images to HD.”

First Baptist Oviedo has two Sunday services, both of which have the same pastor and message, but each take on their own style. The earlier service is more traditional, led by the choir and orchestra, while the later service takes on a more contemporary approach with a live band providing music. The services are shown on local programming, one of which is broadcast live, while the church’s other television show broadcasts a sermon that took place the previous week.

Felix reports that the HVS-390HS switcher offers several useful features right out of the box, without requiring additional hardware. The church’s video production team enjoys the switcher’s Web browser interface, which allows them to control and manipulate the board remotely. They also appreciate the HVS-390HS switcher’s remote panel options. Video operators can have a mix for its broadcast television productions, and another setup for the church’s image magnification, allowing them to easily show the audience at home something different than what the audience at the church sees on its video screens.

“We design our video systems around FOR-A switchers because they’re reliable and offer excellent cost efficiency and functionality,” explained Jeff Cameron, Sales Engineer at Encore Broadcast. “FOR-A also consistently offers great support and training to its customers. The HVS-390HS has proven itself to be user friendly for the church’s volunteer staff, and has enhanced the house of worship’s video production capabilities.”

“Our goal every Sunday morning is to create a distraction-free worship environment through our equipment set up,” explained Felix. “With better quality video production gear like our HVS-390HS, we’re able to eliminate any technical distractions for our members, and this is critical to us. Even more so, technology allows our gospel to expand beyond our doors, reaching the world. I look at our FOR-A switcher as an infrastructure upgrade, and one of the main functions that help our video production run smoothly. I’m confident that the HVS-390HS will carry our church’s productions for many years down the line.”

Yamaha YCATS Training Moves Toward Future In Networking

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Training Sessions (YCATS) is moving in a new direction with their console training programs. This year, YCATS has created two new console classes in order to eliminate the repetition between the CL, QL, M7CL and LS9 seminars as these consoles share many of the same software features. The new classes will initially be held at HB Live during the first week of August, HB Live is sponsoring a CL/QL Series Essentials Class in North Haven, CT and ATR/Treehouse is sponsoring the same class in Warwick, RI.

HB Live, a division of HB Communications will host new sessions Tuesday, August 5th between 8:30 – 5:00 pm at 60 Dodge Avenue, North Haven, CT. For more information, call 800-331-1804. Registration details below.

ATR/Treehouse sessions will be held Thursday, August 7th between 8:30 am – 5:00 pm at the Ocean State Theater, 1245 Jefferson Blvd, Warwick, RI. Complementary breakfast and lunch will be served. For more info, contact ATR/Treehouse at 401-751-3121. Registration details below.

“The new YCATS training direction will be much for efficient and streamlined for our customers,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “We are improving the YCATS programs for networking and acknowledge that our end user customers operate different Yamaha digital consoles from time to time with many common paradigms between the various models that enables us to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our training programs.”

Console Operation – Level 1 is for those with little or no familiarity with Yamaha live sound consoles. Console Operation – Level 2, is more of an intermediate to advanced class designed for those familiar with the basic functions of Yamaha digital consoles. This new training format will allow YCATS more efficiency in terms of customer time. It will also reinforce that the software of Yamaha digital consoles is the same, and a user familiar with one should have no problem operating another. Right now, the largest demand is for training on CL, QL, M7CL and LS9; all sharing similar software.

In addition to the new Console Operation Levels, YCATS is adding “Digital Sound Reinforcement – Dante” and “CL/QL Series Essentials”. “DSR – Dante” is a one-day class covering design and use of Dante networks with Yamaha products as well as several third party products (i.e. Shure ULX-D and Aviom D800). “CL/QL Series Essentials” is a class for those who have been trained on the M7CL and LS9 and covers all new features with the CL and QL consoles and the set up of Dante networks.

For an end user looking for more in depth information on a particular console, YCATS has produced an online video series that can be used as a reference. New videos and webinars are on the docket for later this year.
