Opera Universitaria Goes High-Class with IC Live

Trento, Italy – April, 2014… The Opera Universitaria di Trento recently completed construction of its new student union, a modern building that is home to housing and financial offices, as well as fitness facilities including one of the country’s largest climbing walls. It also houses a new, 240-seat performing arts theater, equipped with an extensive audio, video and lighting installation by Trento-based AV installers A&T Multimedia Srl.

The multipurpose space required a sound system versatile enough to deliver the power and full-range performance needed for live events, while also providing highly intelligible sound for conferences and training sessions. A&T Multimedia’s chosen solution —Iconyx IC Live digitally steerable line arrays from Renkus-Heinz.

The system, provided by Adeo Group, SpA, comprises four ICL-FR arrays, with four ICL215S-FR subwoofers for LF reinforcement. The ICL-FR arrays are directly mounted on the backstage handrails using a specially designed bracket created by A&T Multimedia’s Giorgio Sartorelli, which supports the loudspeaker by its own weight without bolts or screws and enables the speakers to tilt and rotate as required.

The IC Live’s digitally controlled beam steering enables the sound to be focused directly on the audience areas, while aimed away from the walls and other reflective surfaces. RHAON, the Renkus-Heinz Audio Operations Network, provides a full set of remote control and supervision functions, along with the ability to store up to ten preset configurations in memory.

“This is a top-class installation, and the theater has been designed to host everything from lectures to high-level concerts,” says A&T Multimedia’s Alessandro Baron. “We needed a system that could deliver exceptional sound levels and performance for live events, as well as superior intelligibility for spoken word lectures, but was also visually low-profile enough to not interfere with the theater’s design. The only real solution was the IC Live.”

3G Productions Supports Marc Anthony In The Round At Barclays Center

Marc Anthony recently capped off a series of successful engagements at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, the Mohegan Sun Arena and Prudential Center with a triumphant Valentine’s Day weekend performance in the round at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

After successfully providing audio for the first three venues, 3G Productions was faced with the task of ensuring even coverage for Anthony and his 15-piece orchestra performing in the round from a revolving stage in the cavernous arena.

Asked about the challenges, 3G Crew Chief Will Taylor explained, “the biggest was taking the tour from a typical end stage configuration with 70 boxes to over 128 enclosures in the round. We used d&b J-Series during the tour and for Barclays, we flew four hangs of 14 for the longer throws at the ends of the arena and four hangs of 18 for the sides to get the vertical coverage we needed because the building is so tall, over 110 feet to the top seats. We also had 16 d&b J-sub and 8 J-Infra subwoofers that we combined with the barricades because the concert was sold out and we didn’t have the real estate to put them where we normally would.”

“The show sounded great,” Taylor continues, “but we had so many amps for the 360 degree coverage, we needed about 150 ft. of cable bridge to get from one end of the arena to the other with upwards of 400 ft. cable runs per cluster. But even with all of the musicians, background singers, boxes, cable, inputs and additional techs, the client was very happy with the coverage and how the show turned out.”

In this case, the client was Production Supervisor Roly Garbalosa who oversaw the tour for Marc Anthony and CMN (Cardenas Marketing Network). Roly was also fully aware of the challenge: “This was Marc’s first U.S. performance in the round with an orchestra that included 3 trombones, 2 trumpets, 3 percussionists, 3 background vocalists, keyboard, bass, guitar and piano rotating 360 degrees back and forth all night. Besides the eight J-Series hangs, we had 8 sidefill points hung with 3 d&b Q10s each because Marc relies heavily on those, especially for this situation.”

“I’ve known 3G Productions for a long time and typically they do a great show and are very professional. The key to this concert was the advance planning which we needed because we were hanging over 100 points on the same day. We came in at 5am, marked the floors, started working a six and were still polishing details at doors.

“As it turned out, the show sounded amazing and everyone really enjoyed it, including Marc. He brought us in after the show––which is rare––and gave us all high fives. He loved the sound and had a lot of fun.”

The overall system for this massive undertaking also included “racks and racks” of d&b D12 and D80 amps for house and monitors; d&b M2, M4 and Q1 speakers and B2 subwoofers for monitors; a DiGiCo SD7 for Front of House and SD10 for Monitors; Shure PSM 900 and Sennheiser G2 in-ear monitors; Shure, Sennheiser and Audix wired mics, and Shure Axient and Sennheiser 5200 wireless mics.

In addition to Marc Anthony’s Front of House/Band Engineer Jose Rivera and Monitor Engineer Eric “Pyle” Ramey; the 3G Productions crew included System Engineer/Crew Chief Will Taylor, Assistant Engineer Jon Daly, Monitor systems tech Joe “Big Joe” Ramos, and stage technicians Kevin Fuller, Robert “Boy” Valdez, and Jimmy Ibanez.

Summing up the show, Jose Rivera added: “It sounded a lot better than I expected. I’ve worked the room different times––never in the round––and it’s challenging from a coverage standpoint because it’s very high and steep. We wanted to make sure everyone who pays for a ticket enjoys the show. We went in with a very large rig and 3G made sure their pre-design work was done and we had the right amount of boxes to cover the room correctly.

“I had the opportunity to walk the room and the coverage sounded really good. Before we selected a vendor, we narrowed it down to two speaker systems and we’re happy we chose d&b.

Marc was ecstatic,” Rivera concludes. “There aren’t too many shows where he has the opportunity to listen to the band during soundcheck from the audience. For this show, he came in early to familiarize himself with the stage because he hadn’t done one in 360. And when I turned on the PA he was blown away and really impressed with the sound. He was comfortable and happy knowing the people were going to enjoy the show because the reinforcement represented what he and the band were going to do on stage.”

Martin Audio recently opened new MLA facilities including production and assembly areas, quality control and testing, along with additional warehousing.

Designed for MLA, MLA Compact and the new MLA Mini, the facilities will provide a space worthy of this premier system series and further improve Martin Audio’s overall service to its customers.

Since the introduction of MLA in 2010, the system has won multiple awards for innovation and has taken the market by storm. With the international success stretching around the globe from the US to UK and Japan, and now with the introduction of MLA Mini set to further popularize the technology, it was a necessity to develop these new facilities.

Importantly, the principles of 5S were introduced as an integral part of the new development. 5S originated in Japan and stands for the Japanese words seiri (tidiness), seiton (orderliness), seiso (cleanliness), seiketsu (standardization), and shitsuke (discipline), principles that lead to improved efficiency, service and safety.

Challenging Texas Chapel Gets Help from Iconyx

Tyler, TX – March 2014… The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul opened its doors last year after a lengthy construction project, rewarding this east Texas town with a brand new 13,000 square foot main building, along with a new softball field. The 650 seat sanctuary is a beautiful, classically designed structure with a high peaked roof and plenty of ornate wood, marble, and glass.

“It’s a really impressive architectural design, and the acoustics are ideal for their choir and organ,” explains Jason Brantley, CEO of Longview, TX-based Sound Logic Integrations. “But it’s not so good for the band or for intelligibility.”

The Sound Logic crew was brought in to design the audio for the new building, opting for a system centered around Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers. A pair of IC16-R-II columns mounted on either side of the proscenium covers the entire room.

“We originally specified some acoustical treatment to cut down the reverberance a bit,” says Brantley. “But the budget for sound absorption was cut halfway through the project, and we ended up with about a quarter of the treatment we had planned for. That’s where the Iconyx really saved the day.”

Brantley says the ability to tightly focus the sound toward the seating areas, and away from walls, windows, and other reflective surfaces, was critical to the success of the audio system design. “The band and the choir are not on stage — they’re in a choir pocket that’s stage left. The Iconyx enabled us to take the first beam and push it right past where the choir mic is hung, to eliminate any feedback issues. That kind of precision is something we could have only done with the Iconyx.”

ARC-Productions First Belgian Company To Back MLA Platform

Belgian pro audio and lighting specialists ARC-Productions have confirmed the purchase of 16-enclosure Martin Audio MLA Compact and Mini PA rigs, the first company in that country to do so.

Based near Ghent in Flanders, Marc De Baets’ sales and rental company has a long history with Martin Audio dating back to the purchase of a W8 Compact in 2001. He has subsequently invested in WT2, LE1200 and 1500s, WS 218X subs and W8LC.

“His complete speaker inventory has been made up of Martin Audio for many years,” confirms Steven Kemland of FACE, the manufacturer’s Belgian distributor, who serviced the recent order.

Marc De Baets had been operating under his own name before setting up ARC-Productions at the end of 2008 and had been in conversation with Kemland about the MLA from its inception. “The first time I heard the MLA was on the Summerfestival in Antwerp three ago,” he remembers. “I was particularly impressed with the MLX subs, not only the output but also the weight.

“The biggest advance of the MLA system is the even coverage, making it a great tool to counter undesired noise pollution, a very hot topic in Belgium. The compact size and weight, requiring less truck space, were other advantages.” Marc was also present at the MLA Compact European launch in London last year.

Steven Kemland takes up the story. “Marc first heard the MLA Mini in our demo room. The full MLA system is too big for a mid-range company but with MLA Compact and MLA Mini—supplemented by some DD6 and XD12 or DD12 cabinets—it is possible to manage any job between 100 and 10,000 capacity.”

De Baets had initially planned to buy only the MLA Mini version to run alongside his existing W8LC, but after considering the importance of the sound pollution problem in Belgium, he opted for a complete change and purchased 16 x MLA Mini and 16 x MLA Compact, with four MSX subs planned for next year. Meanwhile the system will be run with ARC-Productions’ WS218X subs.

Delivery is planned for the beginning of April, with system training in Belgium and the system will make its major debut at Leiepop Festival in early May before going on to do other festival work (as well as servicing ARC-Productions’ other busy work program).

Adds Steven Kemland, “Having conducted a lot of MLA demos, which have really got the market talking, it is important to have followed this up with our first system sale in Belgium. This investment is a big step up for ARC-Productions and gives them the opportunity for growth.”

In summary Marc De Baets promises this is just the start of his adventure into the world of MLA. “I really believe in this new technology,” he concludes.

Iconyx Tames a Timeless Chamber

Dobbs Ferry, NY – March 2014…  Overlooking the Hudson River just minutes away from Manhattan, Mercy College was founded in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy. In 1961 it became a four-year college offering baccalaureate degrees. The school’s stellar reputation draws students from all over the country, and Mercy College was featured in the book “Cool Colleges” as one of the most exciting schools in the United States.

The Rotunda is an important focus for all Mercy students and is a popular multi-purpose activity center. The historic structure was a former house of worship, and carries with it both the decor and the sonic character of a majestic old cathedral. Its soaring brick walls, stained glass windows and high, rounded shape and domed ceiling create a natural reverberance that makes even normal conversation nearly impossible.

Leo Garrison of Metro Sound Pros elaborates, “Picture a circle, with 50 ft stone walls, eight pillars and a massive video wall. The space is a natural reverb chamber.” Depending on the event, a podium can be set up in any part of the room, creating an even greater challenge — designing a system that could achieve audio clarity amid this ever changing footprint.

Metro Sound Pros designed a solution utilizing a creative application of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Series IC7-II manually steered column arrays. Four pairs of columns are mounted at 90 degrees from each other, providing selectable coverage from any direction. The Iconyx steered beam technology enables the sound to be focused on the audience, and away from the walls, windows, and other problematic surfaces.

As Garrison explains, while the assignment was to deliver coverage and intelligibility, the building’s landmark status meant that aesthetics trumped all else. “Protecting the room’s historic architecture was of utmost importance,” he states. “The profile of the IC7s are so small and slim, they just blend right in.”

Garrison concludes, “With a project like this one, we always face a balance between the need to preserve the natural beauty of the architecture, and the need to create a space that is functional. The integration of the Iconyx series into the Mercy College Rotunda gave us the performance and intelligibility we needed, while maintaining the building’s classic aesthetics. They were a great choice.”

The winners were presented with the awards at a special ceremony and party held during Musikmesse/Prolight + Sound on Thursday, March 13th, 2014.

Martin Audio Names Robin Dibble As Applications Engineer

To support the company’s consistent sales growth and further their credentials within the install space, Martin Audio has recruited the experienced Robin Dibble to the new position of Applications Engineer.

Dibble has a distinguished reputation within the industry having recently been the Head of Audio Engineering at RaceTech in London, and previously Project Engineer at Glantre Engineering in Reading. He is also a member of the Audio Engineering Society and an accredited technician in the Institute of Acoustics.
