‘KK’ Tan Strengthens Renkus-Heinz APAC Support Team

Singapore, April 2012…   Renkus-Heinz has announced an important addition to its APAC international application support team, Singaporean national Tan Kheng Keong (‘KK’).

Technically trained and fluent in Chinese and English, KK joins the company from Renkus-Heinz’s Singapore distributor, Electro-Acoustics Systems, where he was part of the technical team involved in the execution of several major projects including the new Singapore Supreme Court, National Institute of Education, Resorts World Sentosa, and Universal Studios Singapore. Before this he worked both as project and design engineer for an engineering company and an audio consultancy firm.

KK will be offering system design assistance, commissioning support and more, focusing on supporting the company’s Asian/Pacific Rim customers.

He comments: “At EAS, my role was as an internal system consultant: design, commissioning and troubleshooting, all highly technical. My relationship with Renkus-Heinz goes back to when I was consulting over 11 years ago. I was impressed with their loudspeakers and specified them on numerous projects, so I’m already familiar with the products and their ethos.

“The future here is about moving more into digital technology and live sound. The new IC2 system, for example, is just right for concerts. Audio and IT are coming together and at Renkus-Heinz, convergence is happening quickly, and for me it’s natural, having been exposed to IT from a young age. I’m very excited about the future here.”

Iconyx Blends Right in at First United Methodist

Conway, SC, March 2012…  The bell tower of First United Methodist Church has been a landmark in this coastal city’s historic downtown since the early 1960s. In recent years Conway has undergone something of a revitalization, and First United Methodist is no exception. The 600-seat Georgian-style sanctuary was recently treated to an extensive renovation that included everything from foundation repair and new flooring to an elevator and a new, state-of-the-art sound system featuring Iconyx digitally steered column arrays from Renkus-Heinz.

Audio Engineer David Clyburn of Roebuck, SC-based MusiCraft explains the selection of the Iconyx IC16-R systems. “The sanctuary is a beautiful, large, rectangular space with high ceilings and tall windows,” he says. “Even before the renovation, we measured the reverb time at more than three seconds, and that was before they expanded the space to accommodate their new pipe organ. They also removed the carpet and put in hardwood floors. We knew right away we would have to remove their traditional cluster loudspeakers and go for a more focused line array type system.

After researching all the options, Iconyx was the clear choice, says Clyburn. “The Iconyx’s steered array technology enabled us to focus the sound onto the seating areas and away from the walls and floor,” he explains. “We were able to replace an entire cluster of multiple cabinets with two small IC16 cabinets. The sound is nicely focused, and the intelligibility issues the building has long endured are a thing of the past.” The system also includes a Yamaha LS9 digital console, with a Yamaha DM8 processor connected via Cobranet. A pair of Renkus-Heinz IC7 mechanically steered columns are installed in the choir loft as monitors.

The building’s landmark status meant that aesthetics was also a major consideration. Here too, Iconyx fit the bill. “With such an extensive renovation, they were very clear on their desire for the sound system to be as unobtrusive as possible,” says Clyburn. “The Iconyx cabinets, mounted on the vertical columns, blended in perfectly. Everyone was really pleased with the way it looks, and we’re getting great compliments on the sound quality.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Expands VTX Line Array Series With S28 and G28 Subwoofers at Prolight & Sound 2012

FRANKFURT, Germany – At Prolight & Sound 2012, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is expanding its revolutionary next-generation VTX Line Array Series with the addition of two subwoofer models, the VTX S28 and VTX G28.

“In January, JBL introduced the first product in the VTX Series—the V25—and the new S28 and G28 subwoofers provide system technicians with a wealth of configuration options and unprecedented performance,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “These new models truly represent a breakthrough in subwoofer design.”

The VTX S28 and G28 are dual 18-inch subwoofers, each employing two 2269H 18″ transducers featuring Differential Drive® technology with two voice coils, two neodymium magnets and extremely high peak-to peak excursion capabilities to deliver world-class, extended low-frequency performance. Both models are reverse cardioid-arrayable.

The VTX S28 can be suspended or ground-stacked and is cardioid-arrayable in either configuration for improved rear rejection. Compatible with VTX V25 suspension, the S28 can be suspended at the top of V25 arrays to extend the effective low-frequency line length, providing improved vertical pattern control combined with improved rear rejection when used in cardioid mode.

Alternatively, S28 arrays (cardioid or front-firing) can be suspended beside or behind V25 arrays. For theatrical sound design, the S28 can be suspended in the middle of flown V25 arrays to facilitate balcony and floor coverage by allowing improved under-balcony penetration. Larger cardioid configurations are also effective where S28 is suspended or ground-stacked in multiple cardioid blocks, each block consisting of three enclosures.

The VTX G28 is ground-stackable, but with a practical form factor for convenient stacking and additional enclosure volume, plus port tuning that delivers true sub performance down to 22 Hz @ -10 dB.

Like all JBL Professional products, the VTX subwoofers are comprehensively tested in JBL’s power testing facilities. Unique in the industry, during the design phase JBL power testing submits each component and system to 100 hours of continuous, high level input, ensuring that your system will deliver extraordinary sound even after years of hard use and thousands of hours of performance.

Like all VTX Series models, the S28 and G28 feature Crown Audio VRack DSP and amplification. VRack is a rugged touring rack fitted with three Crown I-Tech HD Series power amplifiers, power input panel, and custom-engineered input/output panels that is available in two configurations: VRack

12000 and VRack 4 x 3500 are loaded with three IT 12000HD and three IT 4 x 3500HD amplifiers, respectively.

Apart from the performance advantage of a standard package ensuring that VTX Series enclosures are optimally powered and processed, VRack ensures compatibility for cross rental between VTX Network Partners. Since VRack is supplied with all components installed and internally connected, there is also no need for laborious rack building; no chance that a component might be improperly connected; and a dramatically lower chance of connection failure.

VTX’s patented S.A.F.E. suspension system is streamlined for speed and efficiency with improved hardware for faster setup with fewer pinning operations and greater security. A custom-designed protective cover and dolly makes transport easy and the suspension process fast, efficient and safe. Vertical Transporters will be available allowing for transport of four V25 enclosures or three S28 enclosures in either front-firing or cardioid mode.
