Story Sound Sets New HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays on Wide Tour of Duty

NORTHRIDGE, California – Netherlands-based production company Story Sound BV has upgraded its inventory and become an early investor in HARMAN’s JBL VTX line array series. The company, headed by Michael Story, has purchased 24 V25 line array elements and 26 S28 arrayable subwoofers, plus a variety of Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers. This is largely to accommodate the increasing amount of theater work the company is now supporting with sound design and reinforcement.

Discussing the purchase, Michael Story said, “We made this investment to spread our business a bit more. We handle 14 theater tours every season and want to win more festival work-both indoors and outdoors.”

At the same time, the company has substantially upgraded its JBL VERTEC(r) stock of VT4886 subcompact line array elements and VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers-with all JBL equipment supplied by HARMAN Professional’s territorial distributor, AudioXL.

Over the years, Story Sound has adopted most generations of JBL’s large-format enclosures dating back to the HLA, and this new VTX rig will complement existing VERTEC VT4887A, VT4886 and now VTX in the inventory.

Michael Story is excited about the wide range of projects for which the new VTX series is destined. “We have a very broad package of work ahead,” he confirmed. This includes Shrek The Musical, currently in London’s West End, which will transfer to Amsterdam’s RAI Theater later this summer. Other work will include projects such as magician Hans Klok, circus tours and Daddy Cool, the musical based on Boney M’s music.

Michael Story first heard the new VTX at the PLASA Show in London last September, deciding on the spot to replace some of his older JBL inventory. “It wasn’t only the new waveguide and D2 driver that impressed me-but the new JBL team, headed by Paul Bauman [Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional],” he said. “We know JBL is the only company capable of developing its own components on so many levels to create such a line array. We have supported them for many years, and this latest generation has a very high output.”

Story Sound first deployed VTX (powered with Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers) at a small festival in the company’s hometown of Alphen, for which Story Sound built new rigging towers to create greater efficiency.

It was then ready for a higher profile outing at the Liberation Festival in Almere in early May. “There were a number of famous bands playing and they were flabbergasted by the sound,” Story reported. “They were able to compare the output from the different stages and hear the amazing sound pressure of the VTX. The waveguide is way better than anything we have experienced and it couples so much better. The phase coherency is noticeable and the twin 15-inch woofers provide double the power of other systems.”

“It’s looking very positive for us-and for the VTX,” Story concluded. “There are already a lot of people talking about this new system.”

Australia’s JPJ Audio Invests In HARMAN’s Crown Audio VRACK For Live Sound Applications

ELKHART, Indiana – JPJ Audio today announced it has taken delivery of 26 HARMAN Crown Audio VRACKs, an amplifier management rack system solution. The VRACK features three built-in Crown I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers, providing an easy-to-configure, plug-and-play solution that eliminates the need to build amplifier racks.

Designed to work in conjunction with JBL VERTEC(r), VRX, and AE series loudspeakers, the system’s modular design is highly scalable and is designed to meet the needs of both small and large sound systems.

“We purchased the Crown VRACKs and replaced all our existing amplifiers that were driving our JBL VERTEC line arrays,” explained Jim Straw, CEO at JPJ Audio. “It gives us a new, lightweight packaged amplifier solution as well as access to the new JBL V5 VERTEC presets. It was the way other companies around the world were heading and so we decided to push VERTEC forward again and change the amplifiers. The decision to purchase was driven primarily by the presets.”

“The VRACK will help to set the standard for VERTEC systems everywhere in the world,” added Straw. “VRack ensures an optimum power match for all VERTEC models combined with uncompromised sound quality. Given its versatility, it can be used on VERTEC one day and then a monitor rack the next day.”

As soon as JPJ Audio’s VRACKs arrived they were put to work on the Lenny Kravitz Black & White tour mixed by Laurie Quigley. The PA system consisted of JBL VERTECs; 12 deep on the mains and nine deep on the sides with 12 subs a side and eight subs in the center. The JBL VERTEC was driven by 12 VRACKs, six a side situated behind the subs on side left and stage right.

Laurie stated that he was very happy with the JBL VERTEC on the new racks especially once the programs were written so that he could control different bands in groups.

“The VRACKs worked really well on the Australian tour and I was extremely happy with the sound quality,” he added. “The VRACKs are very versatile; you can do whatever you want with regards to turning certain amps up or down. We had a good sound system, good crew, good company. The gear is only as good as the company that preps it and only as good as the crew that puts it in the air.”

Martin Audio OmniLine Transforms Sound For United Church of Christ

Middletown, MD––When the United Church of Christ was damaged by fire, they took advantage of the situation and called in Audio-Video Group of Frederick, Maryland to redesign and upgrade their sound system as part of the renovation.

Fortunately, the church sanctuary hadn’t been too badly damaged, with the chancel and the area above it requiring the repairs that mostly involved new wiring. Asked about the challenges of installing the new sound system, Audio-Video Group’s President Eric Johnson says, “The church specified that no acoustical treatment was to be added, and since it was an acoustically challenging space because of the surrounding balcony and hard plaster ceiling and walls, the excessive reverberation was surely going to hamper intelligibility. The new system had to be designed around, and to directly combat this issue.”

“The previous sound system was built into the ceiling and the coverage was not that great. When they saw this opportunity to undertake a new sound system that would provide better coverage, speech and music reproduction, they pounced on it.”

Having a client used to speakers that were hidden from view and therefore wary of any audio system hanging from the ceiling into the sanctuary was also challenging. As Audio-Video Group’s Chief Engineer Stephen Bon explains, “Martin Audio’s OmniLine system was our first choice simply in terms of its minimal footprint and aesthetic appeal, which were very important to the Church.

“It also provided the solution to cover the main level seating under and out from the balcony and the balcony itself with full range sound,” adds Bon. “So the coverage pattern with a small, visually unobtrusive speaker was a key factor in choosing OmniLine. We’d used the system in the past and knew it was ideally suited for this project.”

The installed system consists of a single hang from the ceiling with 8 OmniLine enclosures and a Martin Audio AQ212 sub above the hang in the enclosure covered with a grille cloth opening that originally housed the audio system.

Audio-Video Group redid 90% of the audio system with new digital signal processing, amplification, speakers and additional wireless. The audio was converted from predominantly a speech, manual mixer only system to more of a performance-based combination automatic/manual setup.

System components included a Biamp Audia Flex DSP (14-In x 10-Out) for auto-mixing speech mics and all signal processing; a Lab Gruppen C28.4 four-channel amplifier; Biamp MCA-8050 eight-channel amplifier; four Shure ULX-series wireless systems and a Marantz PMD580 solid-state recorder.

Asked about the new system, Johnson points out, “The audio quality is as different as night and day. There’s a drastic difference in terms of intelligibility with smooth, even coverage even from the balcony down through the main seating area in the sanctuary.

“Now it works well for speech and music,” adds Bon. “The Church has moved into a more contemporary music program with acoustic instruments and the musical reproduction is fantastic for both. They wanted full fidelity and even coverage up to moderate levels, and that’s exactly what they have.”

The United Church of Christ’s sound operator Paul Fink is also enthusiastic about the change: “OmniLine speakers are an incredible improvement over the old system. The ability to place them in the active space and aim the sound output directly to the congregation while reducing the bounce effects has made the biggest difference. As to the quality of sound from the speakers, there is no real comparison to the old system. I have occasionally driven them to the limits of my hearing with no sound degradation at all.”

Describing the overall impact of the Church’s new audio system, Johnson concludes, “Intelligibility is the predominant characteristic of the OmniLine system. Looking at the entire congregation from the youngest to the oldest member, we were concerned that everyone would be able to understand the spoken word and OmniLine passed with flying colors.”

ELKHART, Indiana – New York now has a new world-class casino: Resorts World, the first entertainment destination of its kind located within the five boroughs. Resorts World boasts more than 2,200 slot machines and assorted electronic table games, numerous restaurants and entertainment facilities – and a casino-wide networked audio system featuring more than 130 BSS Audio devices, 50 Crown CTs Series amplifiers and hundreds of JBL loudspeakers.

Commercial and residential systems contractor The Integration Factory of Rockledge, FL handled the installation of the system, which is used for background music, paging and announcements. The system is built around four BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-800 Signal Processors, four BLU-320 I/O Expanders, 10 BLU-32 I/O Expanders, nine BLU-80 Signal Processors (all with CobraNet(tm)), eight BLU-8v2 Programmable Zone Controllers, 39 Analog Input Cards, 49 Analog Output Cards, a Digital Input Card and two Digital Output Cards. Amplification is provided by 34 Crown CTs 4200A and 17 CTs 1200 power amplifiers.

“We chose the Soundweb London components because of their networking capabilities, proven performance in many previous installations and their ability to interface with the Crown amps via HiQnet System Architect(tm). The Soundweb London components also operate perfectly with the control system the client wanted, and the HiQnet London Architect drag-and-drop programming interface really speeds up the setup and configuration process,” said Carlos Gonzalez, Senior Manager, The Integration Factory.

The system employs an extensive complement of JBL loudspeakers including 428 Control(r) Contractor 26C/T and 410 Control 226C/T in-ceiling speakers, 22 Control 47L/P low-profile in-ceiling models, 108 Control 67P/T pendant speakers and a pair of LSR2328P monitors.

“In a system as complex as this one, we knew we had to have components that worked together seamlessly and flawlessly,” added Gonzalez. “There are more than 36 zones in the property.”

Australian Rock Legend Cold Chisel Benefits From HARMAN’s new JBL VERTEC(r) V5 Presets

NORTHRIDGE, California – After legendary Australian rock band Cold Chisel rapturously received industry accolades for best-of arena shows of last year, the band recently played at the Festival Hall in Melbourne where sound engineer Greg Rosman utilized the venue’s in-house HARMAN JBL VERTEC(r) line array system, installed by JPJ Audio. For these shows, Rosman had a powerful new weapon in his arsenal: JBL V5 VERTEC presets courtesy of the new Crown VRack, a complete power amplifier and digital signal processing management rack system solution. The VRack features three built-in Crown I-Tech IT 12000HD amplifiers, immediately providing an easy-to-configure, plug-and-play solution that eliminates the need to build amplifier racks.

“The VRacks have made a big difference to the sound of VERTEC,” commented Rosman. “They allow us access to the new JBL VERTEC V5 presets and with V5 it’s like having a new VERTEC system all over again!”

Sound Works Productions Supports Northwestern’s PhilFest

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Big Daddy Love and Paper Thick Walls performed at the Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) 2012 Philfest held in mid-May. The annual bluegrass concert, co-sponsored by A&O Productions and Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED), is held in memory of Phil Semmer, a SEED member who passed away while studying abroad. The event raises money for the Rocky Mountain Institute; an organization that researches more effective use of resources and that Semmer aspired to join after graduation.

Sound Works Productions of Frankfort, Illinois, not only staffed the event (Eric Lindholm at Front of House, Daniel Nickleski at Monitors and Kevin Flasza as Stage Tech), but also provided a NEXO GEO S line array for the main PA along with a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console for FOH and LS9-32 for monitors.

The NEXO GEO S12 was configured as eight GEO S1210s, two GEO S1230s for mains, two PS10s used for front fills, four RS18 Ray Subs, and three 4×4 NXAmps.
