Starlight Theatre’s Sound Shines with L-ACOUSTICS

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Seating nearly 8,000 patrons, Starlight Theatre has been a staple of Kansas City’s performing arts community since it first opened in 1950. Hosting a full calendar of Broadway plays and musicals each summer season – not to mention numerous concerts, corporate events, weddings and fundraisers – many classic productions have trod the boards of the large open-air venue over the years, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Oliver!, Hair, Camelot, Sweet Charity and West Side Story.

As to be expected, Starlight, which is operated by the not-for-profit Starlight Theatre Association, has been through a few sound systems in its time, with the last one holding out for the past 14 seasons. But none of them have ever been able to deliver the critical combination of the intelligibility needed for theatrical dialog with the full-range frequency response necessary for music. Until this year, that is. A new L-ACOUSTICS KARA Modular WST line source sound system was installed over the winter and is already taking Starlight’s 2014 season to new heights.

The new L-ACOUSTICS house system, designed by Dallas-based Idibri (formerly Acoustic Dimensions) and installed by Clair Brothers Audio Systems’ Nashville office, consists of a total of 48 KARA line array modules divided into three hangs of 16 each, positioned left, center and right along a steel framework above the proscenium stage. Flanking either side of the center hang and the outside of the left and right arrays are flown arrays of six SB18 subwoofers accompanied by eight ground-stacked SB28 subwoofers split between the left and right sides of the stage floor. Proscenium fills are handled by two ARCS WIDE and two ARCS FOCUS, one each per side, while six tiny 5XT coaxial loudspeakers and three larger 8XT enclosures comprise the front-fill complement. A total of 16 LA8 amplified controllers power the entire system.

“We put a lot of effort into choosing the new sound system,” states Justin White, Starlight Theatre Director of Operations and Theater Plant, noting the winnowing process began with five systems that Idibri Project Manager Ryan Knox suggested Starlight investigate. This field was eventually narrowed down to three finalists, for whom Idibri arranged a demo that let dozens of Starlight staffers, board members, donors and city officials listen to audio systems in the venue itself and do an A-B-C comparison using the same program material.

Three 8XT enclosures deliver the center front-fill

They emphasized the key criteria of intelligibility and music reproduction, as well as other areas of importance, such as the ability of the system components to endure outdoor use throughout what Barb Schulte, Starlight’s Director of Communications and Outreach, euphemized as Kansas City’s “challenging weather environment, especially in summertime.” And, says White, it became clear very shortly who the winner would be. “After as little as ten minutes for some individuals in attendance, it was unanimous: everyone loved the way the L-ACOUSTICS system sounded.”

Kent Andel, Production Manager for the theatre, says he was a fan of the previous system because of the warmth of its sound, but says that the new system exceeds its performance in a number of ways. “The intelligibility we need for diction and dialog are all there,” he says. “At the same time, it works for music. So the L-ACOUSTICS system won hands down.” This is especially impressive when considering that the compact modular KARA system went head-to-head with systems looking much bigger on paper.

The new L-ACOUSTICS line source array system was first used in late May for Starlight’s Blue Star Awards, a Tony Awards-style program to recognize metro area high school musical theatre talent. All of the system’s critical parameters were on the line, and it performed flawlessly. It will get an even more vigorous workout for the season’s first Broadway musical when The Wizard of Oz comes to Starlight in mid-June.

But even between those shows, the L-ACOUSTICS system is showing its versatility; it’s already been divided into three mini arrays – each with two SB18s, six KARA modules and all four ARCS enclosures – and used indoors in the Jeannette and Jerome Cohen Community Stage that’s part of the Starlight Theatre complex for off-season private events, receptions and parties. “In addition to sounding great, it’s also a very flexible system,” White says. “It’s as loud as we needed it to be, super clear, flexible and just a great choice for us.”

Martin Audio Strengthens Growth With Strategic New Hires

As part of an ongoing process of preparing for the next wave of growth, Martin Audio has recently made several strategic new hires.

First, Bash Akhtar has joined Martin Audio as Operations Director. He has previously served as Operations and Manufacturing Director of RLC Callender, Smiths Detection, and Harmonic Inc. Bash has earned a Fellowship in Manufacturing Management from Cranfield University and is a Manufacturing Systems Engineer from the University of Hertfordshire.

David Morbey has joined as the company’s first dedicated Product Manager. He has previously served as Global Product Marketing Manager at D&M Professional.

Astana State Auditorium Goes Big with Renkus-Heinz

Astana, Kazakhstan – June 2014… Designated as the country’s official capital in 1997, Astana is Kazakhstan’s second largest city, and the world’s second coldest capital. Despite its less than balmy climes, Astana has experienced a boom in development in recent years, with millions invested in parks, government buildings, and cultural centers.

One of the most impressive of the city’s newest structures is Astana State Auditorium, a striking structure designed by renowned architects Studio Nicoletti that has been labeled the “Flower of the Steppe” for its petal-like walls that enclose an indoor plaza that is home to restaurants, shops, exhibition halls, two cinemas, and a 3500 seat auditorium that is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The auditorium’s interior is as dramatic as the building itself. The room’s unique fan shaped wood ceiling panels create a flexible acoustic signature that can accommodate a wide variety of events, from classical music to rock, pop, cinema, and spoken word. As Alessandro Baroni of A&T Media explains, the project was not without its challenges.

“The most important consideration was to achieve a consistent sound coverage across the entire auditorium,” says Baroni. “It’s a very unique design, with multiple levels of seating and an upper balcony that wraps around behind the stage area. The sound system needed to be flexible to adapt to a wide range of performnce material and a wide range of seating configurations.”

The system comprises a main array of 16 Renkus-Heinz PN102LR line array loudspeakers, along with a secondary array of five more PN102LR boxes to cover the upper balcony behind the stage. A center cluster of nine PN212 subwoofers provides ample low frequency reinforcement, and four ST9 cabinets cover lateral fill. The very front rows are covered by seven SGGX42 boxes mounted on the lip of the stage. For even more versatility, the main array can be hoisted up into the ceiling when not in use, and a second complete system comprising 12 IC Live ICL-R digitally steered column arrays on custom brackets can be put into play.

“The Renkus-Heinz systems were a good choice for this project, because the beam steering and built in DSP enabled us to configure the system to cover all the seating, at multiple levels and locations,” Baroni concludes.

A pair of Yamaha M7CL-48 consoles are installed at Front of House and stageside Monitor positions. And four Symetrix Solus 8 units handle system DSP.  Everything is connected via a network of Ethersound, RHAON, and CobraNet.

Video is equally versatile, implementing a dual stack of two Christie Roadie HD+30K DLP projectors for an exceptionally brilliant and high definition picture. “We ran into several challenges,” Baroni reports. “We had too much heat buildup in the rack with two projectors, so we had to work out how to insulate the rack to keep it cool and keep the fan noise down. And we had to design a mounting system that was steady enough to hold the machines so the two images would stay perfectly aligned, pixel-by-pixel, to not lose image quality and definition.” Four Sony BRC3000 HD cams cover the room, with a Panasonic AV-hs400 video console at the helm. There’s even an interpretation system that can provide subtitles in eight different languages.

Not surprisingly, the project also included some logistical challenges. “Of course, it was a challenge to be working in Astana, 6000 km (3700 miles) away from our headquarters in Italy,” says Baroni. “And the winter climate was very severe. And with such a big project, the scheduling and coordinating of different phases and crews is always a bit difficult. But we worked it all out in the end, and the result is nothing short of fantastic.”

Nomad Sound Adds New NEXO STM, Yamaha CLs to Arsenal

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Nomad Sound of Austin, Texas recently purchased a new NEXO STM line array and Yamaha CL1, 3, 5 digital audio consoles to complement their rental arsenal. Since 2005, Nomad Sound has been supplying regional music festivals and several touring clients with world-class equipment along with very experienced technicians. The sound company recently had the opportunity to support a Willie Nelson show followed by Psychfest, both in Austin, multiple festivals, and South by Southwest, putting the STM to successful, but rigorous tests.

Regarding the purchase of the STM, Damon Lange, principal owner of Nomad said “we had realized a 4-way system was the right move to make, having grown our NEXO GEO S12 rig up to 48 boxes, we were looking at our options. When I heard there was an STM demo scheduled at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, I went down with Joel Hume, one of our lead engineers, and we spent two days listening and examining the rig. Once I heard the system and the clarity at 350+ feet as well as examined the rigging and listened to a small ground stacked rig, it was simply a matter of figuring out what configuration to start with.” Lange decided on a 48-box rig with 18 M46′s, 18 B112′s, and 12 S118′s, powered by four NUAR amp racks.

Nomad also added three Yamaha CL digital consoles to its inventory as well. “We started with a CL3 and a single Rio 32 input/output box and then added a CL5 and CL1. We have four Rio’s at this point, and the consoles are cased using Rock Hard captive leveling rigs. They’ve made a really slick console case that a single person can “table” the desk with one hand! We’ve had no issues with rider acceptability of the CL consoles, and anyone familiar with M7CL or PM5D can pretty much jump right in on the CL. The Premium Rack plug-ins are really amazing, and while we all have our favorites, mine is the Dynamic EQ, which feels pretty familiar if you’ve ever used the BSS901 to solve problems.”

For Willie Nelson’s show and Psychfest, the rig consisted of a 9 pair-per-side STM boxes over 12 STM subs on the main stage of both shows and 6 per-side S1210 rigs on the additional B and C Stages for the festival. These shows were followed up with two back-to-back gigs where the STM was ground-stacked three high over four subs for a festival at the historic Pearl Brewery in San Antonio as part of the Echale Concert Series, where Nomad also supplied a Yamaha CL5 at FOH and CL1 for monitors. The next day, Nomad used the STM as part of a three-stage festival in Austin for Fiesta Gardens with three NEXO rigs: STM ground stack on main stage and GEO S12 rigs on B and C stages. Again, the sound company brought in Yamaha CL consoles for FOH and monitors on B and C stages. For South By Southwest, Nomad added a NEXO S118 sub package.

“Nothing but positive feedback all around, Lange says. Everyone was really pleased as to how easy it was to get their mix right where they wanted it. One engineer mentioned how refreshing it was not to have to worry about the system at all. This was our game plan from the get-go; to provide a system where guest engineers can show up, mix, and leave happy without ever having to worry about system tuning/ tweaks. The festival scenarios with flown and ground-stacked systems, plus GEO S12 rigs complimenting as fills and side-stage rigs, really showcase how versatile and flexible the new NEXO STM rig is.”

ACE Provides Chang Jiang International Music Festival With Top-Tier Sound Featuring HARMAN’s JBL Professional VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers

ZHENJIANG, China – Located on the Yangtze River, the city of Zhenjiang recently hosted the 2014 Chang Jiang International Music Festival, where 90,000 music enthusiasts enjoyed performances over the course of three days by well-known musicians such as Nile Rodgers, Wu Bai, Melody Chiang, and many more. Gracing the outdoor stages with world-class equipment from HARMAN’s JBL, Crown and Soundcraft, HARMAN distributor ACE placed an emphasis on audio clarity and power.

The Chang Jiang International Music Festival featured three separate stages: the Yangtze River stage, which catered to artists from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; the Jinshan stage, which welcomed global American and European artists; and the Rock Stage, which was specifically set up for domestic rock bands.

The PA system at the Yangtze Stage featured 24 JBL VTX V25 line array elements, a combination of 12 VTX S28 and G28 subwoofers, 16 STX812M loudspeakers as stage monitors, eight VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array loudspeakers as front and side fills. The system was powered by 32 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD, eight I-Tech 6000 and two sets of I-Tech 4×3500 HD amplifiers. The Jinshan Stage featured 24 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements as the main PA, 16 VT4880 subwoofers and eight VT4888 loudspeakers as front fills and side fills. This system was powered by 24 Crown I-Tech 12000 HD, eight I-Tech 6000 and two sets of I-Tech 4×3500 HD amplifiers. Two Soundcraft Vi6 consoles were used to manage the sound at these stages.

“Installers tend to like VTX and VERTEC systems for these types of events, because they have the capacity to put out high volumes of power and high levels of clarity in an outdoor environment,” said Ben Lui, VP of ACE. “Also, the PA system is able to power through a huge amount of performances day and night in very hot weather conditions. The combination of JBL and Crown makes this possible, without additional guesswork.”

The on-site technical staff was impressed by not only the PA system, but also by the Soundcraft consoles, which were able to manage the sounds from the various styles of bands originating from different parts of the world.

“The audio engineers from the bands as well as some of the audio instructors were blown away by the fidelity of our VTX system,” said Lui. “The high frequencies were incredibly accurate, while the low ones packed a hard punch. The entire integrated system performed perfectly without any failure and zero distortion.”

Martin Audio MLA Compact Takes Control At Sun Valley Community Church


The Tempe campus of Sun Valley Community Church recently installed a Martin Audio MLA Compact loudspeaker system as a key component in a significant upgrade of its technical capabilities.

According to Eric Johnson, Technical Director for Sun Valley, “Sun Valley Tempe merged with Bethany Church two and a half years ago and we inherited a large campus and an auditorium with technical capabilities that were deficient by today’s standards. The audio system was old and primarily designed for natural speech, orchestra and choir reinforcement in an acoustic setting. That, plus the building is a complex geometrical design, basically a five-sided pentagon with a seven-sided auditorium that’s about 160 degrees wide, has a raked floor, many complex angles and no parallel surfaces. Needless to say, this presented a real challenge when it came to choosing a new loudspeaker system.

“The original system had worked for many years,” Johnson continues, “but changing times, culture and styles made us realize that it no longer served our purposes for electric rock and roll style music. We decided on a major renovation that involved changing the seating from traditional pews to modern theatre style seats and going from a totally carpeted floor to carpeting only in the aisles. We also reduced the size of the stage, pulling back the downstage edge by about twelve feet in addition to upgrading the lighting and audio system.

“And there was a real concern as to whether or not we could put in a system that would adequately reinforce rock and roll without overwhelming the live-sounding room. So we discussed acoustically treating the room, which would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, or completely tearing down the ceiling and remodeling the room from the inside which wasn’t feasible either.”

Fortunately, Johnson was aware of the Martin Audio MLA system having first heard it several years ago during a demo at Comerica Theater in downtown Phoenix. “I had an idea of what the technology was about,” he points out, “but I was really impressed with what I heard. The possibility of MLA and the MLA Compact system specifically, led us to realize that the technology would allow us to precisely control the audio output and put the energy onto the seats while keeping it off the ceilings and walls. So that’s the direction we decided to pursue.”

The installed system for the 1300-seat auditorium consists of nine MLA Compact enclosures per side in left-right hangs with seven Martin Audio DSX subs in bunkers arranged in arc formation along the downstage edge. Two WT3 speakers for extreme left and right outfill and six DD6 speakers for front fill complete the system with Martin Audio MA3.0 and MA2.8Q amplifiers and a Merlin Processor that manages the outfills and front fills, as well as communications between the speakers. The rest of the setup currently includes a Soundcraft MH2 40-channel Desk at FOH Sennheiser Evolution Series wireless and DPA microphones.

Johnson adds that the installation team, which included Ed Crippen from Clark, the system integration company, Jon Hunsacker and Kevin Hull from SVCC and Sean Stinson’s ream of riggers from Clearwing, had to bring in a considerable amount of additional power to accommodate the new lights and audio system since the building was already over capacity for electrical service.

Completed in the first week of April, the system debuted on Palm Sunday and according to Eric, “it was an overwhelming success. Ed Crippen was there for the whole weekend, which included rehearsals and the first service. He was taking measurements for the service and one of the things we discovered during the sermon was that real-time intelligibility readings were off the charts. He had never seen intelligibility readings that high. The first time our pastor Chad Moore who uses hearing aids, stepped on the stage and spoke through the microphone he said, ‘I can finally hear myself.’

“There was a band playing that averaged between 95dB and 104dB with subs which was clear and not too loud. With the MLA Compact, the musicians can now focus on the nuances and subtleties of their music that can finally be heard without overwhelming the space. I even had to adjust the drummer’s toms because we could hear them rattling against the support post.

“When we went to the portion with just the pastor speaking downstage, we averaged 72dB over a ten minute window,” Eric confirms. “Not only was it loud enough, it was incredibly clear and you felt as if he was talking right in front of you at 72dB. It’s unheard of to put a message out at that volume and not suffer any fatigue because it’s not loud enough. We’re still talking about that one!”

Johnson notes that the overall process of assembling the system took the better portion of a year and required that he put the installer and speaker company together because “Clark was not a Martin Audio dealer and I wanted MLA Compact in the building. Ed and I attended an MLA training class in Las Vegas and that’s when he really lit up and got what the system was all about. It turned out to be a full-fledged collaboration between Sun Valley, Clark and Martin Audio.”

Summing up about the impact of MLA Compact on Sun Valley, Johnson concludes, “One notable thing that happened on the first Sunday we used system is that the doors from the worship center out to the lobby are usually opened up when it’s time to come in the room, but it was a nice day so the exterior doors from the lobby out to the patio were also open. One person commented that the reason he came in was that when the music started, he could hear our worship leader as clear as a bell all the way out onto the patio, which we could never do before the MLA Compact.”

Wuhu Shimao Riviera Garden Theatre Gets the Renkus-Heinz Treatment

Wuhu City, Anhui Province, China – June 2014…Covering nearly 11 km (7 mi) along the Southeast bank of the Yangtze River, the Wuhu Shimao Riviera Garden has added a new landmark to the city’s skyline. The project combines luxury residential buildings, an international five-star hotel complex, and a host of other amenities including the new Riverside Cultural Square Cultural Arts Center.

The Cultural Arts Center’s crown jewel is the Riviera Garden Theatre, a 1200-seat auditorium that includes a main floor and balcony, as well as 64 luxury seats in the balcony VIP area and a convertible orchestra pit. Created by the Zhejiang Institute of Architectural Design, the multi-purpose venue boasts a wide and varied range of performances and programs, from opera and theater to spoken word and cinema.

With a high-profile and a diverse agenda, the sound system design for the venue needed to encompass both exquisite performance and versatility. Consulting firm Institute of Acoustics of Tongii University worked with the Shanghai branch of contractors Beijing Sebang Huayi Stage Technology Co., Ltd, to create a system based around Renkus-Heinz PNX and STX Series loudspeakers.

The main system is comprised of left, right, and center clusters of three PNX151T loudspeakers covering medium and long throw, with STX7 cabinets handling left and right house coverage. Low frequency reinforcement is provided by a pair of DRS18-2B direct radiating subwoofers. Onstage monitoring is courtesy of four TRX121T two-way complex conic systems. A Yamaha M7CL 48-channel digital console is installed at Front of House. The system is powered by QSC amplification, with a pair of Biamp processors handling system processing.

CAH/Tico of Hong Kong and Beijing provided the equipment for the project. As CAH’s JY Hui explains, the project presented a few challenges. “The theater’s design did not create the most perfect acoustical environment,” says Hui. “Fortunately, we were able to work with the consultants to create EASE predictions and determine the optimal system design well in advance. We also encountered some logistical problems, because the architects did not reserve enough space to install the speakers. Of course, this added to the challenge.”

HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Array Loudspeakers Are the Unsung Heroes in “Sing My Song”

BEIJING, China – Music reality show “Sing My Song” is aired by CCTV3 and recently became a ratings winner in China. With a live audience of 300 people, the popularity of the show is largely attributed to its emphasis on original songs created by independent artists. To complement the ambitious direction of the show, HARMAN’s JBL VTX V25 line array loudspeakers were installed at the show’s live studio to enable the singers to showcase their original pieces of music.

Amidst many musical talent shows that focus on the contestants’ ability to sing cover songs, “Sing My Song” appeals to the artists’ creativity, rekindling the life and spirit of original compositions. The powerful, yet pure-sounding JBL VTX Series loudspeakers are the perfect choice for this program, as they deliver even coverage throughout the studio.

The main PA system features two groups of 10 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array loudspeakers each that are suspended and cover three sides of the stage. Beneath the stage are three groups of four JBL VTX S28 subwoofers each. Thanks to the JBL VTX LAC (Line Array Calculator) Software, each projected area of the loudspeakers is taken into consideration to calculate the energy output of each loudspeaker.

Thirty-two Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers power the loudspeakers, and the entire system is connected using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software, for the convenience of uploading the configurations for all the equipment during installation and sound debugging during live shows.

OXNARD, California — Bolstering its commitment to both the permanent installation and touring markets, L-ACOUSTICS announces the strategic appointment of three new employees to its US team: David Brooks, André Pichette, and Chris “Sully” Sullivan. The announcement comes from Laurent Vaissié, General Manager, L-ACOUSTICS US.

Having served as Applications Engineer for L-ACOUSTICS’ worldwide headquarters in Marcoussis, France for the past nine years, David Brooks has now joined the Oxnard, California office as Applications Engineer, Touring Liaison, USA. With 30 years of experience to his credit – including running monitor mixes for N’Sync, among many other artists – Brooks is now tasked with providing additional support for touring clients, liaising with production and sound companies, and facilitating education for FOH and system engineers.

André Pichette, who most recently served as Director of Integration and Operations at Solotech Las Vegas since 2010, comes to L-ACOUSTICS as Head of Applications, Install, USA. Similarly bringing three decades of audio experience to his new role with the loudspeaker manufacturer, Pichette has performed audio design and engineering work for numerous Cirque du Soleil productions, Olympic Games, and high-profile tours like Billy Joel and Elton John, Backstreet Boys, and Barenaked Ladies over his career.

The new position of Application Engineer, East Coast, USA has now been filled by Chris “Sully” Sullivan, who previously served as Optimization Engineer for Elite Multimedia in addition to mixing touring FOH sound for Gary Allan, Luke Bryan, Joe Nichols, Jaci Velasquez, and Point of Grace. Involved with live sound for almost 30 years as well, Sully takes charge of L-ACOUSTICS’ first technical support position based on the East Coast for increased support and future development in the Northeast.

Pennsylvania Church Upgrades with Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Morris Light & Sound (Nashville) recently completed an audio upgrade at the King Street Church in Chambersburg, PA consisting of a NEXO GEO S12 line array (five GEO S12s per side and two RS18 Ray Subs flown in the center) along with a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console at front of house, and two Rio 3224-D input/output located in an amp rack behind the stage.

“Given the traditional architecture and diverse worship styles at King Street, we needed to provide a system that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also met performance requirements for the various services at the church, states Danny Rosenbalm, Vice President – Integration, Morris Light & Sound. The NEXO GEOS12s were a great choice for this application as they provide exceptional coverage and strong full range music reproduction, all while keeping the spoken word and vocal clarity of paramount importance.”

With a congregation of approximately 2,000, King Street Church seats 550 in the sanctuary and 725 in the Baker Center, a separate contemporary worship space. Three service styles are held each Sunday: traditional, contemporary, and a blended service. The contemporary and blended services have anywhere from six to ten musicians and vocalists as part of the praise band.

“The tech team had heard the NEXO and Yamaha systems at many conferences and training sessions, states John Petrarca (Audio Install Project Coordinator, King Street Church). Since the church is made up mostly of volunteers and house audio duties are shared, we needed a system that was up to date and able to make transitions from one service style to the next. The system also allows for future growth, from video production to multi-site possibilities.”

Rosenbalm also said the Yamaha CL5 was a natural choice for the FOH console since church engineers were already familiar with the CentraLogic platform on the M7CL. “The console provides them the ability to mix twice the number of channels, adds new dynamics and EQ plug-ins via the Premium Rack, and employs Dante protocol for device connectivity. Utilizing Dante networking significantly cleaned up the signal path from the existing traditional copper snake. It also gave the church the ability to connect multiple venues on campus as well as provide broadcast with new recording possibilities. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the results from Yamaha/NEXO system.”

“Having a system that has a high level of performance especially with vocal clarity was crucial, states Tyler Roberts, Media and Production Coordinator at King Street Church. The system also had to be volunteer friendly, and by installing a Yamaha solution that includes the CL5 console and NEXO speaker system, we successfully completed our goals. In addition, the Dante infrastructure provides additional flexibility and allows us to integrate both venues together while helping to facilitate future growth.”
