HARMAN Audio System Highlights Major Sound Upgrade at Historic Lerner Theatre

Vista AV recently upgraded the audio system at the historic Lerner Theatre with components from HARMAN’s AKG, Crown, JBL and Soundcraft.

ELKHART, Indiana — In a major overhaul of the 87-year-old Lerner Theatre in Elkhart, Indiana, audio integrator Vista AV recently completed a sound upgrade featuring components from HARMAN’s AKG, Crown, JBL and Soundcraft. The renovation added 6,000 square feet of meeting space, seating capacity and an expanded moveable stage.

The main theater area is outfitted with 20 JBL VERTEC® VT4887ADP-DA compact powered line array elements outfitted with JBL DrivePack® technology Crown-designed amplifier modules, as well as four SRX712M and six VRX915M stage monitors powered by Crown amplifiers. The existing theatre system was also supplemented with two JBL SRX718 powered subwoofers and three JBL AC18/26 compact loudspeakers. A host of AKG microphones including the D5, D40, P5, and P6 have also been added to the upgraded house system, while a Soundcraft Vi4 digital console was installed to handle both front of house and monitor mixing.

“This was a challenging installation because we were dealing with an existing historic structure that was not at all accommodating to modern technology,” stated Cyril Oake, Project Manager for Vista AV.

“Using the built-in Crown amplifier modules with the VT4887ADP-DA speakers allowed for fast rigging of the arrays and combination of the DP module and the JBL speakers not only provided a clean professional look for the install, but sonically met the needs of the facility,” added David Glass, Systems Designer for Vista AV.

The multipurpose room at Lerner Theatre includes 36 Control 26CT small-format ceiling speakers
powered by Crown CTs 4200 series amplifiers as well as a dedicated AKG WMS450 wireless microphone system.

“Quite a few of the other digital consoles have a long learning curve to get to know even the simplest of functions. With the Vi4’s Vistonics™ control interface, anyone who is familiar with an analog console can make adjustments. For a venue like the Lerner Theater this is a must because of the variety of acts that will be coming and going all the time. Sometimes even the simplest of things makes a difference. The smaller footprint of the Vi4 takes up less room in the auditorium so less seating area needs to be given up for the production location,” stated Glass.

Canalis Nightclub Opens In Vietnam With JBL Loudspeaker System and Other HARMAN Brand Products

NORTHRIDGE, California – Situated in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, the luxurious Canalis nightclub enjoyed a spectacular mid-May opening, which saw appearances by top Vietnamese singers, Ho Ngoc Ha, Dam Vinh Hung and Duong Trieu Vu.

The 400-person capacity dance and live music club, run by an entrepreneur with three other venues in Vietnam’s largest city, has benefitted from a USD $500,000 makeover, and a new HARMAN’s JBL loudspeaker system, installed by local distributor, Basao Investment—forming part of a complete end-to-end system.

The company was awarded the contract for consultancy and installation following a competitive tender, and Basao’s technical support manager, Do Thanh Danh, worked closely with the owner and his technical team to deliver the solution. To provide the desired coverage, Canalis Bar’s main stage has been equipped with eight JBL AM7315/64 high power 3-way loudspeakers, four JBL AL7115 single 15-inch low-frequency speakers and six JBL ASB6128 subwoofers at both stage left and right, with four JBL SRX715F speakers acting as delays at the rear.

Powering the main stage system are four Crown CTs1200, six MA5000i and six MA 9000i amplifiers. The delays are powered by a further MA 5000i with a dbx DriveRack 260 processor and BSS FDS-336T Minidrive speaker management system, fed from a Soundcraft GB2/16 mixer.

The GB2, in turn, takes playback feeds from a CD DJ, and other outboard dynamics include a Lexicon MX400 reverb/FX processor, BSS Opal FCS-966 EQ and dbx 1046 Quad Compressor/Limiter. Basao Investment has also specified an AKG wireless system in the shape of two channels of WMS 450 Vocal Set D5 True Diversity Wireless System.
All of this adds up to a fully optimized system, which has surpassed the expectations of the owner.
“He is delighted because out of his four clubs the sound quality in Canalis surpasses everywhere else,” states Do Thanh Danh.

Firehouse Productions Delivers Dynamic Sound With HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays For iHeartRadio Event

Firehouse Productions supplied a JBL VERTEC line array system for the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Firehouse Productions recently provided sound for some of the biggest names in music at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, sponsored by Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio social media networking outlet. With performances by Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and many others, Firehouse deployed HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line arrays to match the dynamic range of performers in the MGM Grand Arena.

The audio system included two main left-right arrays of 17 JBL VERTEC VT4889 fullsize line array elements each, accompanied by two flown arrays of 12 VT4880A fullsize subwoofers. Side coverage was provided by JBL VT4888 midsize line array elements, and JBL VT4887 compact line array elements provided the front fills. Firehouse also provided two ground-stacked columns of three VT4889 loudspeakers each, on top of three VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers each. Crown I-Tech IT1200HD amplifiers powered the entire system using the new VERTEC V5 DSP settings.

Large events like the iHeartRadio Music Festival pose a variety of unique challenges, particularly when they feature so many different artists. “With a show this size, there are different rehearsals taking place at different times, all with information and settings that need to be conveyed back to the main system,” said Mark Dittmar, Lead Design & Integration Engineer at Firehouse Productions.

With so many variables, the VERTEC line arrays were extremely easy to set up—one of the main reasons why Firehouse continues to rely on VERTEC for major events and a significant factor in the success of the iHeartRadio event. “Everything went as well as we could have hoped, Clear Channel and MGM Grand were happy and we were even five minutes ahead of schedule on every change-over,” Dittmar said. “You can always gauge how a multi-band show is going depending on that; we were always ready to go with no delays, as smooth as could be.”

Dittmar went on to rave about the new V5 presets software upgrade for the VERTEC system. “They are stunning and the high end is much smoother,” he noted. ”The V5 presets solve all kinds of midrange issues, and the low-end response is amazing. The manager of the building even said that you could hear it blasting two blocks away—an impressive volume that had never been reached before. Some acts used the entire system, pushing all the amps to the max level, and even when touching the limit it sounded linear and smooth. It’s always nice when you don’t have to worry about pushing a system too hard and can just let it fly. It’s great to have the performance upgrade without having to buy new equipment. The software upgrade was done in a half-hour and we were ready to go. It’s simply an amazing value to anyone who uses VERTEC.”

Eastern Star Church Opens Northwest Campus

BUENA PARK, Calif.—CSD, Inc. of Fort Wayne, Indiana recently completed a design/build project for the new Northwest Campus of Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis. The church began its history in 1920 with a congregation of 12, and now, three campuses later, has grown to a congregation of over 25,000. The new location was required to fill the need for a larger worship space to accommodate the growing congregation. It also provides a presence for Eastern Star Church on the west side of the city.

“We were chosen as the church’s design/build partner for audio, video and lighting, including systems for the sanctuary as well as significant performance systems in auxiliary spaces such as a chapel, conference rooms, youth and the children’s area,” states Doug Hood, Owner/President, CSD.

A major undertaking, the 3,000-seat contemporary gospel northwest campus features a choir, band, praise team and for most sermons, has 120 members located on the stage. Its new audio system is centered around a NEXO GEO S12 line array consisting of 14 GEO S1210s and 27 GEO S1230s all in white, Yamaha PM5D-RH digital audio console at front of house, and M7CL-48 used for monitors.

“We always stay on top of new products from manufacturers, and since CSD and Eastern Star Church were looking for a high output, yet, small format speaker system that could keep up with the high-energy worship style of the church, we knew the NEXO system would be a perfect fit,” says Hood.

Hood noted that Yamaha consoles were chosen for this location, as was the case with the first two Eastern Star Church campuses, and that console familiarity by church staff members plays a large part. “Another deciding factor for us was the similarity in the M7CL experience as compared to the PM5D. We felt it was important for volunteers to be able to move from monitors to FOH with as little change as possible.

Additional audio system components include 12 NEXO PS15s and four PS10s, NEXO Alpha Subs, eight 4×4 NXAMPs, and one 4×1 NXAMP. CSD also installed DLP 10K Digital Projectors, a Panasonic PTZ Cam System, and ETC and Leprecon lighting systems. Two Yamaha P3500S amps, two P7000S amps, Aviom Personal Mixing, Aviom Digital Snake, and Worx Audio speakers are used in perimeter rooms.
