Wu-Jin’s New Phoenix Valley Cultural Center Spreads its Wings with Renkus-Heinz

Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China – May, 2014 – On a busy thoroughfare in Changzhou’s Wujin District, the aptly named Phoenix Valley Cultural Center stretches its wings over more than 156,000 square feet. The vast complex is the largest and most modern of its kind, an urban nexus that is home to four cinemas, sports and dance halls, art galleries and an early childhood education center, as well as a retail hub, children’s playgrounds, and a public square with canals and gardens.

The complex’s crown jewel is The Grand Theater. Seating just over 1,000 across two floors, the Grand Theater shifts the typical theater paradigm into something just as unique as it is state-of-the-art. The venue’s classic stage can host a wide range of events, from musical to theatrical, and 17 projectors can transform the stage, as well as the walls of the auditorium, into an Omni-Max style theater.

Audio for the Theater needed to be equally versatile, able to accommodate a variety of events, from drama, live shows and TV to meetings, conferences and multi-media reporting. The main system, designed by prominent consulting firm Shanghai LeDian Audio Equipment Co., Ltd., comprises left,  right, and center hangs of 14 Renkus-Heinz STLA/9 line array loudspeakers in all. Eight SGX41 four-inch loudspeakers are mounted on the orchestra rail for front fill, with six TRX81 boxes providing rear fill, and four DRS18-2B subwoofers adding low end reinforcement. Onstage monitoring is handled by a combination of PNX151T, TRX121/9, and CF81 cabinets.

For cinema presentations, a surround system is installed comprising 20 TRX81/12 boxes, along with three STX7/64 cabinets mounted up top for sound effects. Onstage effects are provided by a single STX5M2 loudspeaker and STX5 subwoofer.

Adjacent to the Grand Theater is The Small Theater, a 200+ seat auditorium designed for meetings, multimedia conferences, runway shows, small performances and other cultural activities. Shanghai LeDian selected left and right arrays of three Renkus-Heinz STX4 cabinets as the Small Theater’s main system, with four CFX81 boxes for front fill and a pair of DRS18-2B subs.

SALINA, Kansas — For the past 35 years, the 7,500-seat multipurpose Bicentennial Center Arena in Salina, Kansas has hosted everything from concerts, theatre, circuses and civic events to rodeos, basketball, roller derby and home games for the local Salina Bombers, champions of the Professional Indoor Football League. But while the venue has undergone a number of changes over the years, the original sound system remained in place until Parkway Communications recently installed a new L-ACOUSTICS ARCS WIDE and ARCS FOCUS loudspeaker rig – aka “WIFO” – for the city-owned venue, which is managed by Philadelphia-based Global Spectrum. more

27 Years Of MerleFest Support: SE Systems Relies On Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held the last weekend of April in Wilkesboro, N.C., this year’s MerleFest included over 125 artists with area roots such as Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard. The Festival is named for famed guitarist the late Doc Watson’s, after his late son, Merle, also a gifted musician. For 27 years, SE Systems of Greensboro, N.C. has provided audio production for MerleFest, and supporting their efforts this year, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. provided four CL5 digital audio consoles to add to the inventory, which already included a lot of Yamaha-NEXO gear.

Two Yamaha CL5s were used for front of house and monitors at both the Americana Stage and the Hillside Stage. “All worked flawless and sounded great,” states Bryan Smith of SE Systems. “At the Walker Center and the Chris Austin Stage, we used four Yamaha PM5D’s at FOH and Monitors. At the Creekside Stage, we used our NEXO GEO D sound system with GEO Subs. On the main Watson Stage, SE Systems provided NEXO 45-N monitors with NEXO NXAMP 4×4 power amps. In the video/recording trailer, a Yamaha O1V 96i Digital Mixing Console was used to route to the DVR’s and converters.”

“This year, a new stage was added to our production, Smith says. It was a small courtyard style stage called The Plaza used for smaller, local acts. We only needed to cover audio in a small area, so we decided to use eight Yamaha DSR 112’s active speakers, four for mains and four for monitors. No subs were required for this stage. The DSR system sounded awesome and it projected just like we expected; the bass was strong, but not overpowering, and a perfect match for this stage.”

“The Yamaha CL5 is a great-sounding, and versatile console that was perfect for use on the Americana Stage at MerleFest 2014, states Melissa Joplin Higley, who mixed front of house. The console, Dante networking and Rio input/output boxes performed consistently. I found the CL5 to offer more flexibility and horsepower, and the Premium Rack Effects are a tremendous advantage.”

Higley said she used much of the CL5’s onboard processing. “I particularly enjoyed the Custom Fader Banks, especially since we used a festival patch; it was great to have each band’s input list consolidated on one page for easy access to channels, and we were able to quickly and easily adapt to many different scenarios, including hosting guest engineers, patching artist stage snakes into our Rio’s, running ears from FOH, etc.”

Jeff Neubauer mixed monitors at the Hillside Stage using a CL5. “I enjoyed the custom page feature that allowed me to just choose the channels that we were using out of the Festival page for each act. The ease of Dante to route audio between consoles was also a nice feature, and I also liked the ability to recall parts and pieces of show files.”

KAMAS, Utah – Leading regional sound company Atkinson Sound recently bolstered its audio system inventory with HARMAN’s new JBL VTX V20 line array loudspeakers and Crown I-Tech HD 4×3500 amplifiers. The company will be using its new system for a variety of events beginning in May.

Founded in 1980 by Hoyt Atkinson, the company has evolved its business from a small provider of DJ systems to one of the region’s most successful sound contractors, providing rental and production services for concerts, festivals, corporate events and more, while also growing a strong systems integration department. A longtime JBL customer, Atkinson Sound’s investment in JBL has grown in parallel. “We have been a JBL company many years, starting with an SR-X system before graduating to HLA, and in more recent years to VERTEC® line arrays,” Atkinson said.

After seeing the new VTX V20 system at the Winter NAMM 2014 show, Hoyt Atkinson knew it was time to once again upgrade with JBL. “The high frequency in the V20 is just astounding and there is nothing else that compares to what the D2 driver is providing in a box of that size,” he said.

Atkinson Sound has purchased 24 VTX V20 line array loudspeakers, 12 VTX F12 multi-purpose loudspeakers, six VTX G28 subwoofers and 12 VTX S25 subwoofers. The systems will be configured and controlled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software.

The VTX V20 loudspeaker features a true 3-way system design with proprietary D2 Dual Diaphragm Dual Voice Coil compression driver and Differential Drive™ low frequency transducer technology along with patent-pending ultra-linear motor technology employed for midrange components. In keeping with the philosophy of the VTX Series, the VTX V20 has extremely high power density with each line array element featuring two 2261H 10-inch Differential Drive woofers, four 2164H 4-inch ultra-linear midrange transducers and three of the new small-format D2415K Dual Drivers.

Atkinson Sound expects to use the new VTX system for a variety of events throughout the western United States in the coming spring and summer months. “We love VERTEC and we saw it as a giant step forward for JBL when they introduced the VERTEC Series, and our adoption of VERTEC won a lot of jobs for us,” Atkinson noted. “Now, we see another leap forward with VTX and although we considered loudspeaker systems from competitive brands, nothing matched what VTX has to offer. It’s also a very rider-friendly loudspeaker, which gives us an advantage.”

Tech Works Brings IC Live to the Party

Las Vegas, NV – May 2014…Tech Works, a leading Las Vegas-based sound and production company, just took delivery of new Renkus-Heinz IC Live digitally steerable loudspeakers, and in fact, has already deployed them successfully on several shows.

“We strive to provide our clients with the very best audio experience, and the IC Live is a fantastic sounding system,” states Tom Bourke, general manager of Tech Works. “It provides a tremendous amount of output from a very compact footprint, while the digital steering allows us to focus audio on the audience and not all over the room.”

The Tech Works IC Live package is comprised of ICL-R full-range modules and IC215S dual-15-inch bandpass subwoofers that can be combined into six different configurations.

“The scalability and flexibility of the system is fantastic, and allows us to configure a rig for a wide variety of events, from small to large,” Bourke notes. “Our clients love the sound, and they also love the look and profile of the slim columns.”

CRAS Sets Broadcast Audio Students on the Right Track with HARMAN Studer Vista Consoles and JBL Professional LSR6300 Studio Monitors

GILBERT, Arizona – Located in the Arizona desert, the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS) is an oasis for aspiring audio professionals. Established in 1980, CRAS offers a comprehensive educational program designed to prepare students for the fast-paced, challenging world of audio recording and sound engineering. Recently, CRAS expanded its Master Recording Program to include a Broadcast Audio segment, and outfitted its facilities with world-class HARMAN equipment that includes Studer Vista digital consoles and JBL Professional LSR6300 Series studio monitors.

The Broadcast Audio segment focuses on the opportunities and workflows and technologies that are specific to live television broadcast. Students will work out of the CRAS Broadcast audio production room as well as the CRAS mobile production trailer and work hands-on with the Studer broadcast audio mixing consoles. “Our program has always required students to study onsite for 30 weeks and then go on a mandatory internship, but we expanded that to six more weeks in our program and that includes the new Broadcast Audio phase,” said Robert Brock, Digital Department Director at CRAS. “We want our students to understand the requirements of working in broadcast production—being able to focus while working under a director and handling the pressure that comes with live broadcast.”

Brock noted a need at the educational level to raise awareness of opportunities in the broadcast industry. “The problem is a lot of people haven’t had the exposure to audio for broadcast, so there’s kind of a feeling within the broadcast industry that there isn’t a passion for audio,” Brock said. “We want to make our students aware of the numerous opportunities that exist for audio engineers in broadcast.”

While in the development stages of the Broadcast Audio segment, CRAS found an ideal partner in Studer. “We never want to do anything halfway when it comes to technology, because we want to serve the students but also want to show the industry how committed we are. A lot of manufacturers offer educational discounts and that’s fine, but we really wanted an educational partner and something that was mutually beneficial to the manufacturer and to our students. And this is where Studer really stepped up, they really understood that we wanted a partner that had some vision of their own.”

This vision led to the creation of StuderBroadcastAcademy.com, developed in partnership between Studer and CRAS. The training program is available to professional engineers but also provides the basis of the curriculum at CRAS. Students can operate a Vista 9 console in the audio production room, a Vista 5 in the mobile broadcast unit, or get training online at StuderBroadcastAcademy.com using the Studer Virtual Vista software.

“When you sit behind the Vista 9 or the 5, the user interface with Vistonics™ displays makes it really intuitive once you have it set up and configured,” Brock added. “It’s very easy to take a student who knows very little about consoles and explain just a few things and they can navigate the system, which isn’t true of all consoles out there.”

In addition, CRAS outfitted its studios with two 5.1 surround sound systems consisting of JBL LSR6325 studio monitors with LSR6312S studio monitor subwoofers. “I was at JBL’s headquarters in Northridge, California and [JBL Professional’s Senior Manager, Recording & Broadcast] Peter Chaikin showed us the LSR6325 monitors and we really liked them,” Brock noted. “They were the right form factor and sound really great. What I really like is as a system when coupled with the sub, they sound better than anything else out there. As a singular system, it jibes together really well.”

CRAS worked closely with veteran audio engineer Fred Aldous and other professionals to help CRAS devise the approach of the Broadcast Audio segment. “Fred has been working with our instructors once a week to get them up to speed on everything, and in the meantime we’ve reached out to NASCAR, the NFL and other organizations to get connected with some A1 engineers in the field. We’re really trying to connect closely with the industry,” Brock said.

Imperial Russian Ballet Gets Royal Sound with Renkus-Heinz

Ljubljana, Slovenia – April 2014… In the heart of Slovenia’s capital city, Park Tivoli is a lush urban oasis that is home to the renowned International Center of Graphic Arts, as well as the Museum of Contemporary History. The Park is also home to Hala Tivoli, one of the region’s largest sporting and event halls.

Recently, the Hala Tivoli’s 4500 seat basketball venue hosted a performance of Labodje Jezero (Swan Lake) by the acclaimed Imperial Russian Ballet, drawing a full house and numerous national and international dignitaries. Audio for the event was provided by leading tour providers Akustika Pirman, who brought in a system based on Renkus-Heinz PN-Series line array loudspeakers. As Systems Engineer Metod Komatar explains, the system was exactly what was needed for the venue.

“The Hala Tivoli actually has pretty good acoustics for a sporting arena, and it’s possible to get a reasonably good sound in the room,” says Komatar. “The biggest challenge is the height of the left and right seating areas, and how to cover it consistently using a relatively small number of loudspeakers.”

The main system, designed by Komatar and director Joze Pirman, comprises four flown arrays — two left and two right — each with six PN102 line array cabinets. Six DRS18-2B subwoofers covered low frequency reinforcement. Four TRX151 full range cabinets provide front fill for the first few rows, with two more TRX151 boxes onstage as side fills for the artists. The system was powered by Crown and lab.gruppen amplification, with a Xilica XD4080 unit for system DSP.

“We have used Renkus-Heinz systems for many years, because they always fulfill our needs perfectly, through many different types of events,” adds Komatar. “The PN102 line arrays deliver a nice wide dispersion that enabled us to consistently cover a large area with a small number of speakers. The Renkus-Heinz system proved itself once again, with a very natural sound and plenty of headroom, which is critical for classical music.”

Great Sound Is In the Can At Pepsi Center With HARMAN’s BSS Audio, Crown and JBL Professional

DENVER, Colorado — Known to Denver denizens as “The Can,” the 20,000-plus capacity Pepsi Center is home of the NBA Denver Nuggets, NHL Colorado Avalanche and the National Lacrosse League Colorado Mammoth, and is also host to concerts and special events. The arena opened in 1999 and has been in continuous use since then – including its original sound system. When the Pepsi Center decided to upgrade to a massive new state-of-the-art scoreboard in 2013, management determined it would also be a good time to replace the venue’s audio system from top to bottom.
Colorado Springs, Colorado sound contractor LVW Electronics and Dallas, Texas system designer Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc. (WJHW) had installed the original system and were retained to perform the upgrade, using HARMAN BSS Audio, Crown, and JBL components.

LVW CEO Rusty Griffith pointed out, “The fact that both firms had a history with the venue made us the logical choice – we were under a tight timetable on this project and were given seven weeks to complete a job that would usually take over three months.” LVW was given the go-ahead in spring 2013 and Griffith and his crew had to be finished in time for the start of the Pepsi Center’s fall line-up. “We worked day and night all summer long.”

LVW and WJHW chose a JBL loudspeaker system comprised of six columns of 10 JBL VLA901-MF-16 line array loudspeakers, hung around the perimeter of the arena. The VLA901-MF-16 was chosen for its ability to provide high-volume sound reinforcement at throw distances beyond the reach of traditional loudspeaker designs. Each loudspeaker is equipped with dual 15-inch woofers, dual 8-inch cone midrange compression drivers and three 1.5-inch high-frequency compression drivers. In addition, four JBL ASB6128V dual 18-inch subwoofers are hung directly behind the each of the 10 main line arrays. The loudspeakers and subs are powered by 44 Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers, plus 11 Crown CTs 2000 amps to drive additional loudspeakers at the back of the arena.

“JBL’s VLA line has been a strong choice for us in arenas for the past few years. The overall sound quality is excellent and they provide higher output and increased intelligibility,” explained Mark Graham, Associate for WJHW. “We paired the VLA loudspeakers with the 4-channel Crown amplifiers, which we chose based on previous successes and the overall strong reliability reputation of the I-Tech HD line.”

The system is networked using four BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-806 signal processors and six BLU-326 I/O expanders, both Dante-enabled products. Control for the entire Pepsi Center audio system is provided by HARMAN’s HiQnet Audio Architect™ software, a common control platform for all devices from microphone to loudspeaker. “Using Audio Architect was a big deal,” Graham noted, “considering how new the software was at the time we did this installation. It paid off though – it’s a great way to control the system and its audio management capabilities are extensive. The venue’s ownership was very pleased when he saw we had the capability to put everything onto one software platform.”

“This installation turned out to be fantastic in terms of equal coverage to every area of the arena,” said Griffith. “The performance of the VLA loudspeakers and the subwoofers is so consistent that there’s very little seat-to-seat variation. The Pepsi Center project turned out to be one of the best examples of this I have heard.”

In addition to performance, one of the main benefits of choosing HARMAN according to Griffith was the support LVW and WJHW received from the company throughout the project. “We looked at various manufacturers’ solutions. I’ve always liked JBL and the HARMAN product line for its excellent sound quality and solid engineering and the support they provide – especially on this project, given the time crunch we were under – is second to none.”

In addition to its capability as a full stand-alone sound reinforcement system, the new system is designed so it can be used along with a tour sound system for concerts and other events. If a band or a convention comes to town and their rental system doesn’t have enough coverage, they can readily connect to the Pepsi Center system to supplement the audio.
