4) Floor Monitor: With their clean lines, high-performance components and dedicated V5 processing, F-Series loudspeakers are perfectly suited for demanding tour sound stage monitoring requirements.
5) Firehouse: The F Series is a design collaboration between JBL Professional and the world-renowned Firehouse Productions of Red Hook, New York. Essentially, the VTX F Series is a premium transducer upgrade of a tried-and-tested design that has always delivered for Firehouse Productions and its most demanding tour sound clients.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Introduces VRX Line Array Calculator at Winter NAMM 2014

ANAHEIM, California – HARMAN’s JBL Professional is announcing the VRX Line Array Calculator (LAC) for its popular and widely used VRX Constant Curvature Series loudspeakers. The VRX LAC offers an accurate and easy-to-learn design tool that allows configuration of VRX systems prior to deployment.

“Since JBL introduced the first VRX loudspeakers, they have been used in virtually every imaginable environment, from theaters to houses of worship, sports facilities to schools, as portable or permanent sound reinforcement systems,” said Jon Sager, Senior Manager, Market Development, Installed Sound, JBL Professional. “The VRX Line Array Calculator will provide an effective sound design and simulation tool that builds on the successful heritage of JBL’s VTX and VERTEC® Line Array Calculator software.”

With the VRX LAC, up to four audience planes can be modeled. Adding ground-level seating, multiple balconies, stage areas and rear wall boundaries is simple. In addition, quick calculation of optimal array angles and gain shading offers smooth front to rear audience coverage. Visual display of rigging details on a separate “Array Configuration” page shows size, weight, and rigging parameters with built-in working load limit (WLL) design factor safety warnings.

The VRX LAC also enables two separate arrays to be used simultaneously. Adding a second rear delay array with the proper angles and relative volume is now easily accomplished. Moreover, ground-supported stand mount and subwoofer stacked arrays can be modeled just as they are used with the VRX products. Dual angle pole mount socket selectors show down tilt angles for increased aiming flexibility, while single point hang array angles can now be easily checked ahead of time.

The VRX LAC includes a quick start help file that can get any VRX user up to speed and using the VRX LAC in under an hour. VRX User Guides (for both passive and powered systems) are bundled with the VRX LAC for quick reference to specific questions that may come up when using VRX loudspeakers.

Delicate And Martin Audio MLA Support Black Crowes

The Black Crowes celebrated a successful tour of outdoor venues with a joyous December concert reunion finale at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Like the tour, the concert featured the Tedeschi Trucks band and The London Souls, with Delicate Productions of San Francisco supporting with a Martin Audio MLA loudspeaker system.

According to Smoother Smyth of Delicate, the tour included sheds ranging from 3,000 to 18,000-capacity with Black Crowes FOH Engineer Bob Coke “over the moon about the MLA system.” Setup for the tour included 11 MLA and one MLD (downfill) per side, 8 MLA Compact per side, and 12 ground-stacked MLX subwoofers.

After the initial summer tour, the Black Crowes continued to tour using local promoter-supplied systems in the fall. But because Delicate and Martin Audio MLA had worked out so well for the band during the summer, the Crowes decided to bring both back for the finale.

The challenge for Delicate was to completely rebuild the disassembled system from scratch so that it was identical to the original touring rig and get it up to San Francisco for an 8:00am load-in and 2:00pm soundcheck with no rehearsal time. As Smoother concludes, “it required a maximum effort on our part, but was well worth it because we were getting a lot of comments the next day about how amazing it sounded. The Graham auditorium is known as a very lively room and MLA allowed us to contain and control the audio really well. It turned out to be a slam-dunk.”

Bob Coke, contacted in France where he lives and works, also had positive comments: “I was initially skeptical about the MLA system. But during my first experience with the MLA Compact at a circular bull fighting arena in the south of France––an acoustically difficult venue––I was truly amazed by the sound quality, color and coverage. An hour before doors we were told that certain sections of the seated area would be vacant. The system tech, Andy Davies, reprogrammed the venue coverage to exclude that section in five minutes. I walked the section and was amazed to hear the difference. It’s what convinced me that the theory behind the MLA system was accurate and reliable. To be able to reprogram where the sound is being sent in a venue without having to physically change how the system is flown is quite remarkable.

“We were touring with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and The London Souls,” Bob continues. ”Each band had their own FOH engineer with different criteria for the system color, but the three of us agreed that the system sounded great. In the mornings when we were loading in the system, we would often hear from the local crews or local sound technicians that the MLA was the best sounding system they had yet heard in their venue. For the size and punch it can’t be beat. It’s also easy to set up and take down.”

Asked about mixing the final concert, he concludes, “The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is a really decent 7000-seater. I mixed the band for their final show LOUD––louder than the first two acts and the system as well as the venue behaved really well acoustically at that level. I was impressed by the sound of the Tedeschi Trucks band and London Souls, and how sweet the system sounded at their levels. There were a lot of people who stopped by after the show to pay tribute to the sound. The best compliment is when people talk about how great the show was––it’s a sign I’ve done my job well and that people have experienced the music in a direct way without having it ‘filtered’ through a bad sounding system or being distracted by room acoustics or a bad mix.”

Christie Lights Up TCL Chinese Theatres as Official 4K Digital Projection Partner, with Christie Duo Anchoring State-of-the-Art 932-Seat Auditorium

Christie®, a world leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual displays, announced that it is the official 4K digital projection partner of TCL Chinese Theatres for the renovated TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, with the acclaimed 4K Christie® Duo™ two-projector system anchoring that theater’s 932-seat auditorium and lighting up its massive screen.

Christie digital cinema projectors have also been installed exclusively at the adjacent TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, making the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame a “walk with Christie.” TCL Chinese Theatres reopened to the public on September 15, following extensive renovations, with the world premiere of the remastered “The Wizard of Oz: An IMAX 3D Experience.”

Front of TCL Chinese Theatres

The installation of the 4K Christie Duo solution at TCL Chinese Theatres is among the highlights of the extensive, multi-million dollar renovation that have helped the famous landmark make the move to digital. The reopened theater features the brightest 2D and 3D 4K-resolution images in the industry, with the auditorium playing host to a wide range of high-profile events, from world premieres and gala performances, to some of the entertainment industry’s most glamorous celebrations and awards shows.

“The TCL Chinese Theatres is an iconic institution that has played a significant role in the legends and traditions of the entertainment history worldwide,” noted Alwyn Hight Kushner, president and chief operating officer for TCL Chinese Theatres. “The TCL Chinese Theatres’ multi-million renovation efforts included a respectful acknowledgement of the theater’s history, while bringing it into the digital age, thanks to our digital cinema partners, which include Christie. We are also pleased that Christie projection systems are lighting up our TCL Chinese 6 Theatres’ screens nearby. For us, Christie was the clear solution for our non-IMAX 2D and 3D showings.”

Craig Sholder, vice president of Entertainment Solutions at Christie, noted that “The TCL Chinese Theatres is part of American history, as is Christie, with our record of more than 80 years service to the cinema exhibition industry. As the official 4K digital projection partner, Christie is proud to ensure that all the content shown at the TCL Chinese Theatres is always thrilling, magical and memorable – the way movies are meant to be.”

The Christie Duo two-projection system, selected and installed through Christie integration partner Southern California Cinetech Services, offers twice the brightness of conventional systems for enhanced 3D, 4K resolution and High Frame Rate (HFR) screenings, enabling TCL Chinese Theatres to deliver an enhanced movie-viewing experience. It features an innovative design that perfectly aligns every pixel on the giant screen for optimal 2D and 3D screenings.

Jim Dukes, Christie senior product manager, noted that the massive screen at TCL Chinese Theatres is an excellent canvas for demonstrating the enormous power and brightness of the total solution that Christie Duo and two Christie Solaria® CP4230 projectors deliver.

“Large screens such as the one at the TCL Chinese Theatres present a challenge to most dual projection systems when it comes to the convergence of the image, which must be perfectly aligned to ensure the sharpest results possible. The Christie Duo’s configuration options solve that challenge by making image convergence quick, easy and consistent,” said Dukes. “Since its introduction, the Christie Duo has been highly acclaimed for addressing the biggest issue faced by exhibitors when screening 3D movies: that is, the delivery of ample brightness to the screen to make the experience memorable.”

Dukes also observed that the dominance of the Christie brand in theaters is also reflected in the exclusive use of Christie digital projection systems in the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres nearby.

“Christie digital projectors are used by leading exhibitors around the globe and are found in more digital cinema installations than any other brand,” he said.
