DPA Microphones Makes Incognito’s Percussion Sound Crisp and Clear

Joao Caetano Incognito 1

Jazz Funk band Incognito celebrates its 35th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion the band was recently filmed at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire for a live convert DVD.

To ensure that the sound was as a tight as possible, Incognito’s percussionist Joao Caetano took along his own selection of DPA microphones including four d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and a stereo pair of d:dicate™ 4011A cardioid microphones, which were used as overheads for the recording.

“Normally I use d:dicate™ 4011A Cardioid microphones for studio work and rely on the d:vote 4099 Instruments Microphones for live performance. But on this occasion we were recording audio for a DVD so I supplemented the line-up with the d:dicate 4011As because I wanted to capture the best sound possible. Our front of house engineer, Chris Lewis, was very happy that I had brought them out of the studio for the task. He always insists that I use my DPAs on all our gigs.”

25-year-old Caetano is a fully fledged member of Incognito having joined Jean Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick’s band in 2010. Originally from Macau, he came to the UK to study Music at Chichester University. Since graduating he has worked as a professional percussionist in the UK and has also composed and recorded music for television. Alongside his Incognito projects, Caetano has also worked and performed with the likes of Chaka Khan, Leona Lewis, Jessie J, Dionne Bromfield, Mario Biondi.

“Although I am primarily a percussionist, I am also very melodic because I studied violin for 12 years and guitar while I was at university,” he says. “I incorporate an awareness of other instruments into my work and I do like to capture the best sound possible, both in the studio and on the live stage. This is the main reason why I invested in my own selection of DPA microphones – in my opinion they are the best microphones in the world. They wipe the floor with everything else.”

Incognito tours every year and 2014 is no exception. The band are currently performing at various venues around Europe and Caetano takes his trusted d:votes with him wherever he goes.

“I use them on my congas and bongos because they deliver a really crisp, clear sound,” he explains. “They are very reliable and, of course, very portable because they are so small. I love the fact that they are well engineered and that they can be used on a range of instruments thanks to the clips that DPA has designed for them. Everything about them is good – even down to the cables and the case they come in. Compared to other microphones, they are streets ahead and once you have tried them you never go back to anything else.”

Joao Caetano is also working on a solo album project and says this will be recorded with DPA microphones because he wants it to sound ‘beautiful’.

“I’m playing guitar on this album and I’m definitely using my d:dicate 4011A microphones to capture that,” he says. “I have also been recommending DPA microphones to other musicians that I work with and am more than happy to point them in the direction of DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network, who were a great help when I was buying my own microphones.”

DJ Ravidrums Performs At Telemundo’s Third Annual Premios Tu Mundo Show With HARMAN’s AKG Microphones

AKG_DJRavidrumsMIAMI, Florida – Dubbed the ‘One-Man Wrecking Machine’, DJ/drummer DJ Ravidrums (Jakhotia) recently performed at the Telemundo’s Third Annual Premios Tu Mundo (Your World) Awards in Miami’s American Airlines Arena, which featured top Latin American and Spanish artists such as Yandel, Lucero, Juanes, Los Tucanes de Tijuana and David Bisbal. Having developed a transparent touchscreen DJ interface in collaboration with Virtual DJ Software—the Dream Screen 3000—the unique talents of this DJ/drummer were delivered to the audience with HARMAN’s AKG microphones.

Jakhotia combines his drumming skills with an interest in modern DJ applications, such as digital turntables. During the primetime show, his setup featured the Dream Screen 3000 with customized surrounding drums, situated on a separate platform in front of the main stage.

Jakhotia used 10 AKG C518M microphones on all the tom drums, two AKG C451B microphones on the overheads and an AKG D40 microphone on the snare.

“The show was about big giant Brazilian Samba sounds, consisting of percussion, electronics and proper acoustics,” said Jakhotia. “Getting the acoustics to meet the electronics takes a lot of work, but the AKG C518 microphones helped me do all that and generate a more powerful presence.”

As Jakhotia delivered an audiovisual spectacle in the middle of the arena, the AKG microphones held their own and delivered more than just world-class sound. “In this age it’s all about ease of use and reliability, which these microphones definitely have,” Jakhotia said. “Even after hitting them with my drumsticks many times, they never fail.”

In addition to the Awards event, he also uses an AKG D12 microphone for the kick drum for some shows, and AKG C414 microphones at his home studio.

“I just love the C414’s, as they’ve always been legendary and made me fall in love with AKG ever since I was a kid,” said Jakhotia. “The punch and clarity is there, making the electronics sound beefy and the acoustics sound complete. It’s challenging but thanks to AKG, I can always find the right balance.”

Point Source Audio SERIES8 Microphones Chosen by Chase Oaks Texas Mega-Church

Audio engineer and leadership team select PSA’s low-profile mics after extensive evaluation.

Chase Oaks' Senior Pastor Jeff Jones relies on Point Source Audio’s CO-8WD headset microphone to deliver to his congregation

Point Source Audio (PSA), an innovator of the original and one-of-a-kind “Unbreakable Boom” miniature microphones, announced that its SERIES8 miniature microphones have been adopted by the three campuses of Chase Oaks Church of Plano, Texas—serving greater Plano’s population of 720,000.

SERIES8 headset mics are well-suited to the church community, particularly those with large congregations and physical dimensions to match. Chase Oaks’ expansive campuses made servicing their microphones a growing challenge and expense. “Our old headsets were continually snapping. It was very frustrating,” recounts Chase Oak’s Audio Engineer Kevin Sanchez before discovering Point Source Audio’s SERIES8 and its unique “Unbreakable Boom”. “The help I received from PSA’s customer support CHAT just blew me away,” Kevin added, “every question I asked came back with a ‘yes’ and a ‘here’s how you can do it.’”

The SERIES8 collection of headset, earworn and lavalier microphones is Point Source Audio’s next generation of miniature microphones. Its flagship 360° bendable boom feature is one of four features the company touts to be unique in combination with their mics’ IP57 waterproof rating against water, sweat and makeup; 148 dB max SPL; and interchangeable X-connectors for swapping wireless terminations.

Sanchez was wowed by Point Source Audio’s miniature headset that was both bendable and waterproof. After purchasing the CO-8WD through his trusted dealer, Rat Sound Systems in Camarillo, California, he verified the boom didn’t break after bending it 90° and after wearing for 30 minutes, it passed the comfort challenge. But the definitive factor for Sanchez and the leadership team was the headset mic’s performance quality. “I was shocked at how much gain I could get before feedback and the clarity of the headset,” remarked Sanchez.

Chase Oaks Church joins other distinguished venues such as Universal Studios, the Kravis Center, and Shiki Theater Company Tokyo to have compared and chosen Point Source Audio’s SERIES8 microphone. With an MSRP starting at $389, Point Source Audio’s SERIES8 miniature microphones are available for purchase at a number of resellers and distributors worldwide. Apple Invites Larry Fishman To Speak At Special Employee Presentation

Cupertino, CA––With products such as iPhone, iTunes, MacBook, iMac and more, Apple Inc. is well known for beautiful design and seamless product integration. But where does Apple turn when looking for inspiration to help keep their ideas fresh?

Larry Fishman founder and President of Fishman, designer and manufacturer of pickups, amplification and other products for acoustic and electric musicians, was recently invited to speak to Apple designers, engineers and product managers.

Fishman delivered a presentation entitled “Inspiring Tools for Musicians: A Confluence of Engineering and Art” to a standing-room only audience. Not surprisingly, almost all in attendance raised their hand when asked by Mr. Fishman, “How many of you are engineers?” When asked the second question, “How many of you are musicians?” an equal number responded.

Fishman continues, “At that point I knew I was among friends. My own background with a Mechanical Engineering degree and years as a performing bassist has allowed me to seamlessly move between creative endeavors. Sometimes I’m playing my bass; sometimes I’m ‘playing’ my computer CAD system; at all times I’m creating.”

Mr. Fishman took the audience through his concept of creativity and how the engineering arts relate to and co-exist with the “fine” arts in terms of individuals and companies. He went on to explain how the Fishman culture of inspiration, rejecting institutional bias and “untying knots” has helped build an award winning, profitable and acknowledged leader in the MI industry over the last 33 years.

In addition to the lecture, music was used to reinforce key points and illustrate the end results of Mr. Fishman’s process. Performances featuring musicians Greg Koch, Roscoe Beck and Ritchie Fliegler were woven throughout the program.

Specific products were included such as Fishman’s first pickup design for upright bass along with his early relationship with guitar makers, which ultimately led to the development of the industry-standard Matrix pickup. Fishman spoke of his experience creating Parker Guitars with Ken Parker, and many of the challenges he faced with a radical new design that challenged the sensibilities of the conservative guitar market. Aura Acoustic Imaging Technology, Loudbox acoustic amplifiers and Fluence Multi-Voice electric guitar pickups were also used as examples to illustrate the Fishman creative technology process. Of particular interest to the Apple audience was the TriplePlay Wireless MIDI Guitar Controller and how it integrates with iOS and OS X software.

Fishman concludes, “At this point, Apple’s mark on product technology and design are indisputable. That they would invite me to speak to them as a peer is quite an honor. Being given the opportunity to share my views on product development to a receptive audience at Apple was an amazingly inspiring and humbling experience.

“Also, the fact that many of the attendees stayed and chatted well after the presentation was over definitely made my day. We could really relate to each other, as in ‘if you’re a computer company why are you making a phone?’ It’s not that much different from our expansion into digital processing, electric guitar pickups and amps. Ultimately, we all agreed the object is to bring value, something truly unique to people.”

Earthworks FlexMics Capture Beatification Ceremony Conducted by Pope Francis in South Korea

Milford, NH – Earthworks FlexMic™ podium microphones were recently used in a Beatification Ceremony conducted by Pope Francis in Seoul, Korea on August 16. The ceremony was held at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul, with nearly one million people in attendance and 20 percent of South Korea’s population tuning in to watch the historic event on television.

Sung Jun Park, Director of Engineering for Art Mix, selected six FMR500/HC 19 inch Earthworks podium microphones for the ceremony.

Park commented on some of the benefits that the Earthworks FlexMics provide. “The sensitivity and dynamic range are good. Additionally, their gain before feedback is definitely superior to the other microphones.”

Park also noted the response of the ceremony’s organizers to the sound quality the FMR500/HCs delivered. “The Vatican was satisfied, since the FMR500/HCs have a high quality sound.”

In addition to the overall sound quality, the FMR500/HCs also provided aesthetic benefits for an event being broadcast on television. “The microphone’s head is small. So, it did not hide the Pope’s face.”

For this particular ceremony, Park utilized J-Series and Q Series loudspeakers from d&b audiotechnik, a DIGICO SD-8 console and six Earthworks FMR500/HC podium microphones.

Rock Band Squint Records Extraordinary Kickstarter Album With HARMAN’s AKG Microphones and Headphones

AUSTIN, Texas – Taking advantage of new opportunities in the music industry, alternative rock band Squint recently transitioned from touring across the nation to recording an album funded through Kickstarter. Despite the shift in priorities, the band always relies on HARMAN’s AKG microphones and headphones to produce the reference sound they aim for.

Squint used to perform over 200 nights per year, building a considerable following in the process. Hoping to keep up with its audience in the digital era, the band turned to studio recording projects to put out more quality content. It is a daring move that succeeded, thanks to crowd funding and reliable equipment.

“Over the last couple years, people’s attention spans have become shorter, moving to the next thing quicker,” said Dane Adrian, lead vocalist for Squint. “We lost touring, our mainstream income, but thanks to our fans on Kickstarter, and AKG microphones and headphones, we were able to bounce back and make better music in the studio.”

Thanks to the overall quality and endurance of AKG equipment, Squint employs it on the road and in the studio. Adrian used an AKG WMS4000 wireless system with a D5 microphone on the road, while the rest of the band used the C414 and the D40 microphones for guitars, the C451E microphone for the overhead drums and the D12 microphone for the bass drum in the studio and during live performances.

“As for the headphones, I love the AKG K171 MK2s, because its sound is so true,” said Adrian. “It sounds clean and clear, and that is why I consider them my reference sound for both the studio and home.”

Transitional phases for well-established artists are intimidating to say the least, and when asked how Squint managed to adopt new practices without losing its fan base, there was only one word that came to mind: loyalty.

“Ten years ago, I didn’t consider myself a rock star, but when I reached out to AKG, they listened. No matter how far I was from home, I’ve been well taken care of,” said Adrian. “It was clear that AKG was a brand that I would like to be loyal to, in the same way our fans have been loyal to us throughout the entire process. Just like our fans, AKG cares about the connection with artists, and the music they want to make.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets premier audio, visual, infotainment and integrated control solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets. With leading brands including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson ®, the Company is admired by audiophiles, musicians and the entertainment venues where they perform. 100 Free DPA Microphones – How Do You Wear Yours?

As part of an exciting competition that begins today (September 1 2014), DPA is giving 100 lucky people the chance to win its d:screet™ Necklace Microphones, which were launched earlier this year.

The competition, running on DPA’s Facebook page and website, asks contestants to come up with ingenious ideas for how and where to use the d:screet™ Necklace Microphone. Five microphones will be awarded to the five most liked submissions on Facebook, while the remaining 95 will be given to the people who, in DPA’s opinion, come up with the best, most creative and most original ideas. An example can be found at this YouTube video, created by DPA Microphones: http://bit.ly/1ll1KBQ

This unique plug-and-play microphone solution from DPA is ideally suited to situations where mounting and consistent audio output are the primary requirements. By housing a legendary d:screet 4061 Omnidirectional Miniature Capsule in a soft rubber necklace, DPA has created a microphone that anyone can use. There is no need to worry about attaching it to clothing because the only fitting skill this microphone requires is the ability to do up a necklace catch.

“We are extremely excited about this product and want to share our excitement with the rest of the world,” says DPA’s CEO Christian Poulsen. “These new microphones are clearly meeting a need because they can be mounted and removed quickly, and several times, by untrained talent without a sound expert nearby. We are well aware that they are perfect for reality show settings as they have already been used for the Danish adaptation of Big Brother. But we think there are plenty of other situations where their simplicity, audio quality and size make them ideal. We hope that people entering our competition will use their imagination to come up with some really ingenious ideas to surprise and amuse us.”

DPA’s competition also has a second phase, which will be open to those who win one of the initial 100 necklace microphones. Once winners get their microphones, all they have to do is document their idea by sending the company a picture or a video. The two best entries will win a grand prize – a choice of DPA Microphones up to a value of 1,000 EUR (list price).

Entry to this competition is via the DPA website or DPA’s Facebook page. All ideas need to be submitted by September 28, 2014 and the 100 initial winners will be announced on October 1, 2014. Contestants can win multiple necklace microphones, but only one microphone will be awarded per idea.

Entry to phase two of the competition will open after October 1, with the two ultimate winners announced on November 10, 2014. The first grand prize will go to the most liked picture or video on Facebook, while the second will go to the application idea that DPA perceives to be the best and most well documented.

DPA Helps Ivan Rutherford Bring Broadway to Hong Kong

Internationally acclaimed artist Ivan Rutherford turned to DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Microphone to help him give a truly emotional performance during a recent one-off show in Hong Kong.

The actor and singer, who has performed the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables over 2,000 times on Broadway, was looking for a microphone that could deliver exceptional sound quality and clarity through a large venue sound system. He also wanted a hand held microphone so that he could move freely on stage while he sang a series of Broadway hits dating from the 1930s to the present day. DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone fitted the bill perfectly. Rutherford used the microphone in a wireless configuration with a Sennheiser Wireless System, which made movement possible and allowed him to deliver a vocal performance that was memorable for the audience.

“I had never used a DPA microphone before and I was very pleased with the experience,” Rutherford says. “I was impressed with the intensity of the sound and the mobility it allowed onstage, which gave me great freedom to make unobstructed connections with my audience. I also enjoyed the feel and weight of the microphone in my hand, and found that it helped give me the necessary confidence for a one man performance. I would very much enjoy working with a DPA mic again.”

Rutherford’s show, entitled A Taste of Broadway, took place at the Academic Community Hall in Hong Kong. Mr. Clarence Chang, from Jazz World Live Series that organized the concert, says: “The only instrument on stage was a grand piano, which was also miked with DPA – a matched pair of d:dicate™ 4011A Cardiod Microphones in A-B configuration to capture the main piano signal and d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones in a stereo piano kit configuration to provide additional percussive effect from the hammers. This proved to be a very successful formula because the piano sounded fantastic – really crisp and lively, yet with all the body and warmth one would expect from a top of the range instrument.”

Ken Kimura, DPA’s General Manager for the APAC region, and Ricky Wan, from DPA’s Hong Kong distributor Digital Media Technology, were on hand to ensure the optimal microphone set up.

“The d:facto Vocal Microphone in a wireless configuration was a perfect match for Ivan Rutherford as it enabled him to move freely, while capturing every nuance of his voice,” Kimura says. “When you have a two hour show that only consists of a singer and grand piano, you really need that artist to be super talented and to have a great voice. Ivan Rutherford had both of these attributes in abundance and gave a fantastic performance.”
