The West Ocean String Quartet Choose DPA Microphones

The West Ocean String Quartet, winner of The Irish Times/The Ticket’s Trad CD of the Year 2013 for their album An Indigo Sky, are now using DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to capture their unique sound.

The West Ocean String Quarter recently appeared at Ceiliúradh (Celebration), a special evening of music, spoken word and dance which was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall to mark the historic occasion of the first State Visit to the UK by the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins. For this concert, which was watched and heard by millions globally, the Quartet played several traditional Irish pieces, arranged by Neil Martin who not only plays in the quartet but also writes and arranges most of their music. During the London show they were joined by singer Eimear Quinn and actor Fiona Shaw, ending with a powerhouse performance alongside the all-star house band, and Army bands and pipers from both Ireland and the UK.

Formed in 1999, the West Ocean String Quartet’s vision, eclectic repertoire and style have won them global praise. Their music lies somewhere between the worlds of classical and traditional music. Disregarding rules and boundaries, they have found for themselves a unique voice, and have collaborated with many leading artists, both on stage and in the studio, including Christy Moore, Mary Black, Liam O’Flynn, Matt Molloy, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill and Brian Kennedy.

Rick Camp Brings Earthworks WL40V Capsule on the Road with Jennifer Lopez

Milford, NH – With a career spanning 30 years and a roster that includes Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Burt Bacharach, The Isley Brothers, Baby Face, Anita Baker, and Kelly Clarkson, FOH Engineer Rick Camp has certainly been around the block. And in 2011, Camp added Jennifer Lopez to his impressive roster. Now Camp is taking the Earthworks WL40V wireless microphone capsule on the road with Jennifer as she tours the globe.

Camp first learned about the Earthworks WL40V capsule from a friend, Tim Kidwell, who does sound for Frankie Beverly and Maze. “Tim showed me how well the WL40V rejected sound.” recalls Camp. “During a performance Frankie would always turn around and walk straight toward the drum set, and his stage volume was always incredibly loud. The Earthworks capsule just rejected all of the sound from the drums.”

About a year later, Camp had an opportunity to use the WL40V capsule himself on Jennifer’s Sony DWX Digital Wireless. “I am an endorser of Sony wireless microphones, and in talking with my rep from Sony, he told me how the new Sony DWX series wireless mics were designed to use interchangeable mic capsules,” explains Camp. “He mentioned that one of the interchangeable capsules was the Earthworks WL40V. I told him that I had actually heard one of the Earthworks mic capsules in action, and that I wanted to try it.”

“The thing that impresses me with the WL40V is that the pickup pattern is really tight, which rejects all the stage noise coming in from the rear and sides,” explains Camp. “When a singer turns toward a drum set or guitar amp, it rejects all of that. The rear rejection is just great!”

“I also love the sound of the Earthworks capsule,” says Camp. “It is crystal clear and sounds like a studio mic on stage. The WL40V has a very smooth response and I love that, especially when Jennifer is on a ramp, 50 feet out in front of the PA speakers.”

Camp explains how the WL40V has improved Jennifer’s performance. “The WL40V capsule is incredible and there is nothing that I don’t like about it. It has made a world of difference for me, and especially with Jennifer, because she likes to work in front of the PA speakers for about half of the show, and I have no acoustic feedback problems,” explains Camp. “When she walks down the 50 foot ramp, when she faces the audience, her body blocks the speakers and when she turns around toward the stage, with the rear of the mic facing the speakers, it all works flawlessly. No matter which way she turns, I have no feedback problems when using the WL40V mic capsule. This capsule improved the performance by fifty percent, just by the rejection of all the outside elements such as side fills or wedges.”

Another challenge Camp faced during the performance? “There is a part of Jennifer’s show where she is doing a tango with some of her dancers,” says Camp. “One of the dancers holds Jennifer’s mic up to her, and she says a few words as she is spinning around and twirling. I could never dig out this little vocal, as it was so soft. However, when using the WL40V capsule, I have no trouble picking this up. It sounds just like she was standing still, singing into the microphone.”

Having had such a stellar experience with the WL40V on Jennifer’s tour, Camp is spreading the word. “I have already recommended the Earthworks WL40V capsule to other engineers,” says Camp. “I tell them that the WL40V has incredible rear rejection and a very impressive sound quality. It sounds like a studio mic on stage.”

DPA Microphones Helps Steve Browell Capture Unique Car Sounds

Recording audio for film and TV within the confines of a car is hard enough, but actually capturing the sheer range of sounds that comprise car noise is an entirely different level of challenge. This, however, is something of a specialty for freelance sound effects editor Steve Browell who uses a range of DPA microphones and a variety of techniques to achieve spectacular results.

Browell, whose recent projects have included recording sound effects for Scarlett Johansson’s latest film Under the Skin, directed by Jonathan Glazer, says: “What I love about the job is that it’s so varied. From enhancing the physical sounds on screen to bringing inanimate objects to life; from designing effects to add to the emotion of the story to recording original sounds for each film, there is always a new challenge.”

Browell’s work involves many different locations, from race-tracks to mansion houses, from anechoic chambers to scrap yards. With him go a matched pair of DPA’s d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones and a selected pair of d:screet™ 4061 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones, which were supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network. Browell also owns a pair of d:dicate 4021 Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones in an DPA X/Y setup that have been customised to fit into a Rycote windshield.

“I have always liked the sound DPA microphones capture,” he says. “When I started my career I was involved in a lot of music recording and I can remember the first time I used a pair of DPA d:dicate 4011s when they were still Brüel and Kjaer. I loved the amazingly detailed and natural sound they were able to capture; it was like hearing the sound from the live source again. From then on I have always wanted to own my own pair.”

Browell first started experimenting with car recordings when he was asked to capture car sounds for a film he was working on. “Cars are fascinating machines that create a symphony of sound,” he says. “Also I liked the physical challenge of where and how to place microphones on a moving vehicle and still get a decent sounding recording with as little vibration and wind buffeting as possible.”


He explains that much of the action in Under the Skin takes place in the interior of a Mercedes Sprinter van. “To get a really authentic sound and the right coverage I spent a day recording the van with a multi-mic setup covering different aspects of the interior, the engine and the exhaust.”

Browell has been able to hone his techniques, not to mention widen the library of different cars he has captured, with work on the Need for Speed computer game franchise. As he says, though, it’s a delicate balance between the shielding stopping wind noise and it starting to colour the source sound.

“I also had to find materials that would withstand the high temperatures and a few Rycote windshields got burnt in the process,” he explains. “The McLaren MP4 12c was particularly bad for this; on overrun you can get a flame of three foot out of the exhaust. It can also be a problem fixing the microphones onto the cars and not damaging the paint and bodywork, which is important when some of them are valued at over $1m. Each car’s shape is so different and I need to be extremely flexible with my methods to get the microphones into a sweet spot: out of the direct airflow around the car but also avoiding some of the high temperatures and trying to dampen some of the vibration.”

For the future he says he would definitely like to own more DPA microphones, but adds that remembering petrol helps, too…

Amptec and DPA Host Microphone Workshop With Balthazar

Belgium rock band Balthazar recently threw open the doors to one of their sound checks so that 45 audio engineers and musicians in Brussels could see how DPA microphones are used during the band’s live shows.

This unique workshop, organised by DPA’s Belgium distributor Amptec, was supported by Balthazar’s Front of House engineer Filip Tanghe who took part in a question and answer session with the invited audience, during which he discussed microphone and mixing techniques.

Dany Meeuwissen, Pro Audio Sales Manager at Amptec, says: “The workshop took place at the Ancienne Belgique concert hall where the band were playing a gig later that evening. After a general introduction to DPA’s microphone technology, the audience was able to listen to the band soundchecking and hear solo examples of the various DPA microphones that they use on stage. These include four d:facto™ Vocal Microphones, two d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Recording Microphones, which are used for overheads, and three d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, which are used on the snare and floor tom drums.”

Originally from Ghent and Kortrijk, Balthazar is a five-piece rock band that has been receiving fantastic reviews across Europe as the support act for Editors. The band is now touring in its own right and has made DPA microphones an integral part of its tour equipment.

“When it comes to vocal microphones, DPA’s d:facto is my first choice because it has such great resistance to feedback without sacrificing any detail,” says Filip Tanghe. “The sound it produces is very full and rounded, with no harshness at all. I find it incredibly musical.”

Tanghe engineers approximately 130 live gigs a year for Balthazar and now uses DPA microphones all the time. When Balthazar are not touring he works with Belgian singer songwriter Hannelore Bedert, who tours with an 11-piece band consisting of horns, strings, drums, guitars, keyboards and backing vocalists.

“I use DPA microphones for Hannelore’s live gigs as well and they certainly make those set-ups a lot easier,” Tanghe says.

TED2014 Speaks Up with DPA Microphones

McCune Audio, full-service technical event specialists, rely on classic 4088s and d:screet 4060s to mic guests and props for the renowned conference

VANCOUVER, APRIL 3, 2014 – Heard by thousands of people through live audiences, simulcasts, webcasts and recordings, and millions more through online video engines, the annual TED Conference requires gear that matches its prestige. With discussions that address a wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture, microphones are vital to all TED audiences. To provide the ultimate in sound quality for presenters and performers at TED2014, technical team from McCune Audio/Video, the symposium’s sound services company, relies on DPA Microphones’ classic 4088 Directional Headset Microphones and d:screet 4060 Omnidirectional Microphone.

TED2014 marks the second time that DPA Microphones is part of the audio setup for the conference. The McCune Audio team used the same selection of mics at last year’s event because of the high-quality audio of both mics and comfortable fit and feel of the 4088, each requests from production crew workers and presenters, respectively.

“For years, the post-production crew was trying to get us to reduce the amount of room acoustics we were hearing in the recordings,” says Nick Malgieri, McCune’s Head of Audio for the TED Conference. “Because of the live PA system in the room, there was a slap-back echo always happening in the voice. We really used some pretty extreme processing paths with our previous mics just to try to help us get ahead of the issues. Once we switched to DPA 4088s, the added isolation let us really scale back on the processing. The sound was so much better that the post-production crew asked us to deploy ambient mics to capture the energy of the venue. That led us to the d:screet 4060s, which we use to pick up a lot of the stage noise from the props and scenery on set, such as chalkboards during presentations, a fire organ for a pyrophone performance or a target being hit by an archer.”

The versatility of the DPA mics also plays an important role in the audio support at the TED Conference, which hosts 12 90-minute shows over the course of five days. Throughout each of these individual productions, Malgieri and his crew need to mic as many as 10 separate presenters speaking for up to 18-minute segments each. In these instances, the audio team uses the 4088s. The shows also incorporate other types of presentations, such as musical, theatrical or dance performances, or magical acts, which require the 4060s.

“The technology setup for this show is very important because of the high turnover and the way the show is actually produced,” explains Malgieri. “We are doing three shows a day, with only an hour or so to reset between them, so we need high-end gear that can keep up with the constant demand and rigorous use.”

As one of DPA’s most popular products, the 4088 is ideal for a variety of performing and vocal presentations. It is designed for acoustically demanding live performance environments, where background noise and feedback is a concern, and boasts the same open and natural sound qualities of the company’s other legendary microphones.

Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and close-miked instrument applications, the d:screet 4060 capsule is highly unobtrusive. Because of its small size, this tiny condenser mic exhibits an exceedingly accurate omnidirectional pattern, and therefore does not need to be aimed directly at the sound source to achieve quality pickup.

3G Productions Supports Marc Anthony In The Round At Barclays Center

Marc Anthony recently capped off a series of successful engagements at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, the Mohegan Sun Arena and Prudential Center with a triumphant Valentine’s Day weekend performance in the round at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

After successfully providing audio for the first three venues, 3G Productions was faced with the task of ensuring even coverage for Anthony and his 15-piece orchestra performing in the round from a revolving stage in the cavernous arena.

Asked about the challenges, 3G Crew Chief Will Taylor explained, “the biggest was taking the tour from a typical end stage configuration with 70 boxes to over 128 enclosures in the round. We used d&b J-Series during the tour and for Barclays, we flew four hangs of 14 for the longer throws at the ends of the arena and four hangs of 18 for the sides to get the vertical coverage we needed because the building is so tall, over 110 feet to the top seats. We also had 16 d&b J-sub and 8 J-Infra subwoofers that we combined with the barricades because the concert was sold out and we didn’t have the real estate to put them where we normally would.”

“The show sounded great,” Taylor continues, “but we had so many amps for the 360 degree coverage, we needed about 150 ft. of cable bridge to get from one end of the arena to the other with upwards of 400 ft. cable runs per cluster. But even with all of the musicians, background singers, boxes, cable, inputs and additional techs, the client was very happy with the coverage and how the show turned out.”

In this case, the client was Production Supervisor Roly Garbalosa who oversaw the tour for Marc Anthony and CMN (Cardenas Marketing Network). Roly was also fully aware of the challenge: “This was Marc’s first U.S. performance in the round with an orchestra that included 3 trombones, 2 trumpets, 3 percussionists, 3 background vocalists, keyboard, bass, guitar and piano rotating 360 degrees back and forth all night. Besides the eight J-Series hangs, we had 8 sidefill points hung with 3 d&b Q10s each because Marc relies heavily on those, especially for this situation.”

“I’ve known 3G Productions for a long time and typically they do a great show and are very professional. The key to this concert was the advance planning which we needed because we were hanging over 100 points on the same day. We came in at 5am, marked the floors, started working a six and were still polishing details at doors.

“As it turned out, the show sounded amazing and everyone really enjoyed it, including Marc. He brought us in after the show––which is rare––and gave us all high fives. He loved the sound and had a lot of fun.”

The overall system for this massive undertaking also included “racks and racks” of d&b D12 and D80 amps for house and monitors; d&b M2, M4 and Q1 speakers and B2 subwoofers for monitors; a DiGiCo SD7 for Front of House and SD10 for Monitors; Shure PSM 900 and Sennheiser G2 in-ear monitors; Shure, Sennheiser and Audix wired mics, and Shure Axient and Sennheiser 5200 wireless mics.

In addition to Marc Anthony’s Front of House/Band Engineer Jose Rivera and Monitor Engineer Eric “Pyle” Ramey; the 3G Productions crew included System Engineer/Crew Chief Will Taylor, Assistant Engineer Jon Daly, Monitor systems tech Joe “Big Joe” Ramos, and stage technicians Kevin Fuller, Robert “Boy” Valdez, and Jimmy Ibanez.

Summing up the show, Jose Rivera added: “It sounded a lot better than I expected. I’ve worked the room different times––never in the round––and it’s challenging from a coverage standpoint because it’s very high and steep. We wanted to make sure everyone who pays for a ticket enjoys the show. We went in with a very large rig and 3G made sure their pre-design work was done and we had the right amount of boxes to cover the room correctly.

“I had the opportunity to walk the room and the coverage sounded really good. Before we selected a vendor, we narrowed it down to two speaker systems and we’re happy we chose d&b.

Marc was ecstatic,” Rivera concludes. “There aren’t too many shows where he has the opportunity to listen to the band during soundcheck from the audience. For this show, he came in early to familiarize himself with the stage because he hadn’t done one in 360. And when I turned on the PA he was blown away and really impressed with the sound. He was comfortable and happy knowing the people were going to enjoy the show because the reinforcement represented what he and the band were going to do on stage.”
