DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Microphone Wins New Fans

ran Healey, the lead singer of UK band Travis, and Marti Pellow, the lead singer of Wet Wet Wet, are the latest in the growing list of vocalists to switch to DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone. In both cases the artists made the change on the recommendation of their live sound engineer, Tom Wiggans.

“I have no problem recommending DPA’s new d:facto microphone because I’m so impressed with the results it has delivered for Fran and Marti – and for Dougie Payne, Travis’ bass player, who is also using one for his backing vocals,” Wiggans says. “Before I tried d:facto, I had tried quite a few new vocal microphones that made big promises, but always ended up going back to the microphone that people have been using for over 40 years. However, the d:facto’s clarity and ability to capture the true sound source without extraneous background noise has made a real difference to the way I work. I now have much more time to concentrate on other details because my vocal fader is just vocal, I don’t have to deal with anywhere near as much ambient mush bleeding into the mix.”

Tom Wiggans was introduced to the microphone by Rob Ramon, product manager for DPA’s UK distributor, Sound Network.

“Rob was at one of the gigs Travis played at the Roundhouse in London, and afterwards he came backstage and introduced himself,” Wiggans said. “I was already familiar with DPA having used the company’s overhead and instrument mics. When I heard about d:facto I was keen to try one, so Rob arranged a demo. I didn’t get a chance to try it until we were in Paris a few days later. Pablo Wheeler (Travis Monitor Engineer) and I were able to do an A/B comparison with it against the mic Fran usually used. It sounded amazing – so good that after the show I realised I was going to need better reverbs. The difference was really noticeable.”

After such a positive experience, Wiggans was happy to specify two d:facto Vocal Microphones for the rest of the Travis tour, which was taking in a number of South American cities.

“I had one for Fran and one for Dougie, both of whom were delighted with the way their vocals were sounding,” Wiggans says. “We then flew straight to some Scottish shows, and unfortunately all our equipment went astray so we had to borrow stuff for a couple of shows. Thankfully, our gear arrived for the last show, and as soon as the band walked on stage and spotted we had the mics back everyone was much happier. Missing something when you don’t have it is always a good indication of how good it is.”

After completing the Travis tour, Tom Wiggans took his d:facto vocal microphones straight out on the road again – only this time with Wet Wet Wet.

“My original plan was to have Marti try the mic in rehearsal so that we could see how he got on with it, but he was having none of that,” Wiggans says. “He wanted to try it straight away so Chris Trimby (Wets Monitor Engineer) just threw him on stage with it, blind. The d:facto sounded brilliant from the off and Marti was absolutely chuffed to bits. He liked the weight and feel of it in his hand. From a performance point of view he felt it was really well balanced.”

Tom Wiggans has also been using DPA’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to capture drums and brass. These were supplied by SSE Audio Group in the UK and used on the Travis tour.

“The minute we miked up Neil Primroses’ drums with the d:vote 4099, everyone was blown away,” Wiggans says. “People were coming up to me and asking what I’d done to make the drums sound so ‘real’. All the attack that you get with acoustic drums was there – it sounded like you were standing right next to them, only through a PA. They were just as good on Wet Wet Wet’s brass section, which tends to be quite loud. Once again there was no problem with feedback or rejection.”

Both Travis and Wet Wet Wet will be playing live in coming months – Travis is off to the Far East in March/April, while Wet Wet Wet has a number of racecourse gigs lines up for the summer. For Tom Wiggans and for the lead singers, the choice of microphone is now easy.

“It will be DPA’s d:facto without any doubt,” Wiggans says. “From now on, when it comes to vocal mics, it’s always going to be my first choice.”

Petaluma, CA — Point Source Audio today announced that company President James Lamb has been tapped as the first commander of the newly-formed California State Military Reserve (CSMR) Band. Lamb, a lifelong trumpeter, composer, and arranger, earned an appointment as a Warrant Officer in the State Military Reserve in August 2013. In addition to playing trumpet and writing arrangements, Lamb will help coordinate support for California’s three National Guard Bands, based in Sacramento, Oxnard, and Los Alamitos.

The California National Guard Bands uphold a long tradition dating back 150 years of Guard bands providing music at military and civic events across the state. The bands perform a wide-ranging repertoire that requires high standards of musicianship. “The CSMR Band role is to act as a reserve to the Guard Bands, filling out the ranks as needed or providing other necessary support functions,” Lamb says.

In addition to the intensive year long course he completed at the Warrant Officer Candidate School, finishing as Honor Graduate for Academic Excellence, Lamb has a longstanding connection in his life between music and military service. He joined the Navy after attending the School of Music at California State University at Northridge, and performed in Navy bands throughout the 1980s, becoming an arranger, performer, and band leader touring the US, Asia, and Australia.

After leaving the Navy in 1991, Lamb enjoyed a career in New York City as a professional trumpeter, music director, and conductor, which took him to performances in storied venues including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. He then transitioned into work in the audio industry, first for Apogee Sound, a manufacturer of high-performance sound reinforcement loudspeaker systems, and later for Digigram, a maker of networking products for audio and video distribution for the Broadcast market. “Many of the skills that you learn from playing in bands translate well into business,” Lamb observes. “Early on you learn to listen to the people around you, to communicate, and to work well with a group. Business organizations require much the same skills.”

In 2004, Lamb founded Point Source Audio, where he continues to draw on his performer’s perspective. “My background shapes my view and understanding of the market,” he says. “It gives me an understanding of how important quality and dependability are to ensuring that a performer can give their best performance. The ultimate goal for me all along has been to put tools in the hands of performers that allow them to do their job as well as they can.”

By 2009, with Point Source Audio well established, Lamb felt it was time to give back to the military music community that had been so crucial in shaping his life and career. He stepped in as staff arranger and associate conductor with the National Guard band in Sacramento. When the state decided to form a formal reserve band, one of only three in the nation, Lamb was tapped to become its first Band Master.

The band is currently looking for qualified individuals who are interested in serving and playing with the band. “There is satisfaction in serving the community and helping the National Guard,” Lamb says. “As with all CSMR duties, we’re an all-volunteer force, the CSMR Band offers a unique way for those interested in serving a chance to apply their musical skills in a way that benefits the state and their local communities.” Qualified musicians who are interested in volunteering should contact James Lamb at jlamb@point-sourceaudio.com.

Masque Sound Turns Up the Volume for Touring Production of Musical Sensation, Rock of Ages

When the touring production of the hilarious, five-time Tony® Award-nominated 80’s musical Rock of Ages hit the road to rock its way across America for a third season, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, went along for the ride, supplying a custom audio equipment package to support Sound Designer Craig Cassidy and his team.

Set in 1987 on Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages tells the story of a small town girl who meets a big city rocker at Los Angeles’ most famous rock club, The Bourbon Room. This arena-rock love story is told through the mind blowing, face-melting hits of the greatest bands of the 80’s including, Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and more.

Recreating the heavy, arena-rocking sound that defined the big hair 80’s with a PA system that would be able to move in and out of the theatres quickly enough for the tour’s rigorous schedule was Cassidy’s biggest challenge in designing the sound. To make this happen, Cassidy collaborated with the team at Masque Sound.

“Gary Stocker at Masque Sound was instrumental in creating a tower design that would provide us with the flexibility and sound we needed for the production,” says Cassidy. “Getting the SPL of a rock concert without having the cast run around with handhelds all night long is not an easy task — Masque Sound’s support and technical services played a big part in pulling it off.”

In order to create the hard-rock sound Cassidy envisioned, Masque Sound provided a DiGiCo SD 10 Digital Console for the front of house and a DiGiCo SD 8 at the monitor console. A line array featuring Meyer Sound MICA compact high-powered curvilinear loudspeakers and Meyer Sound 600 HP subwoofers were incorporated into the towers. Masque Sound also provided the production with Sennheiser 5212 transmitters, matching 1046 receivers and coupled them with DPA 4066 omnidirectional headset mics. In addition, Masque Sound supplied its expert frequency coordination services for the over 30 channels of wireless that are being used for the show.

“I have enjoyed a long relationship with Masque Sound, and it is my shop of choice,” adds Cassidy. “I can really lean on the staff’s expertise in a lot of areas. If I run into any problems, they always have someone there who can solve it for me. They are really top notch.”

DPA Microphones Bring Added Clarity To David Gray’s Vocals

Leading singer songwriter David Gray has become the latest in a long line of vocalists to discover the benefits of DPA Microphones’ new d:facto™ Vocal Microphone.

Gray’s well-crafted songs were delivered with pristine clarity during his recent Sounding Out tour of Ireland after FOH engineer Graham Pattison introduced DPA’s d:facto II into the equipment line-up.

“I’ve been a fan of DPA microphones for some time because they deliver such great sound quality,” Pattison says. “However, this was the first time I’d had the opportunity to use the new d:facto II Vocal Microphone and I was really impressed with the results we achieved. Right from the first syllable in rehearsals I knew we were onto a winner, but it wasn’t until the first show in Ireland a few days later that I really heard the vocal clarity and exceptional quality through a large venue sound system. There were no gain or feedback issues, and even when left with a flat EQ it sounded exactly how I’m used to hearing David’s voice. The EQ I did end up using was just to help the vocal sit in well with the instrumentation.”

Pattison adds that Gray didn’t question why his microphone had been changed.

“He trusted my judgment and his own ears,” he explains. “During the two week tour we played 11 shows, and did a live streamed and filmed ‘other voices’ show and a live on air RTE radio show. Everyone was coming back to me with very positive feedback about the sound in general as well as his vocal performance.”

Pattison first began working with David Gray in 2007 and since then he has engineered all his live gigs. In 2011, Gray’s Lost and Found tour gave him the opportunity to experiment with a different technical approach and it was on that occasion that he began using DPA microphones.

“The Lost and Found tour was a more acoustic presentation of David’s songs, so we used different instrumentation,” Pattison explains. “We also added a couple of new musicians who could cover backing vocalist duties, so at times we had a five voice choir to back up David’s main vocal.”

Thanks to the acoustic nature of the show, Pattison decided that DPA microphones would be the perfect way to capture the instruments on stage. After speaking with DP’A UK distributor Sound Network about the tour’s requirements, Pattison settled on using two d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones for the double bass and cello, two d:dicate™ 4011 Recording Microphones for the acoustic guitar and mandolin, two 4023 microphones for the grand piano and one d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone for Gray’s trademark handpump harmonium.

“I chose DPA microphones for their sound quality – it really was as simple as that,” Pattison says. “DPA microphones have always been regarded as the best you can buy, so when I had an opportunity to acquire some mics for my studio and for live shows, I knew that DPA was the way I wanted to go. Apart from their exceptional sound quality, I’ve also find them extremely versatile because they can be mounted in so many different ways, including directly onto the instrument.”

Pattison says that DPA microphones are now standard on all the tours he engineers because they are so rugged and reliable.

“I did three tours last year, all with DPA, and I didn’t have any microphone failures,” he says. “Even the miniature cardioid microphone I’ve been using on David’s pump harmonium is still going strong. The build quality, particularly of the d:dicate 4011 Recording Microphones, is fantastic and no matter where in the world I ship them, they always withstand the rigors of freighting and come out of their boxes working perfectly every time.

Masque Sound Supports Billy Crystal’s Return to Broadway for Reprisal of Tony® Award-Winning Play, 700 Sundays

When Billy Crystal returned to Broadway to reprise his Tony® Award-winning play 700 Sundays, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was on hand to support Sound Designer Steve Canyon Kennedy and Associate Sound Designer Walter Trarbach with a custom audio equipment package.

700 Sundays, an autobiographical journey, is an original two-act play centered on the legendary actor’s heartfelt and often hilarious story of growing up, growing old and the undeniable power of family. Crystal plays numerous characters that have influenced who he is today, taking audiences through his youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years, and finally his adulthood. The title refers to the number of Sundays shared by Crystal and his father, Jack Crystal, who passed away when he was 15.

“Masque Sound has been the audio equipment rental provider since the show made its Broadway debut in 2004. They have been with us for two national tours as well as the show’s Australia run, so they were the obvious choice for this reprisal,” says Trarbach. “We have enjoyed our relationship with Masque Sound, and their equipment and support is always top notch.”

For 700 Sundays, Masque Sound provided a custom audio package that included an Avid VENUE Profile digital mixing console. L-Acoustics dv-DOSCs made up the line array elements for the main speaker system and a selection of speakers from Meyer Sound, EAW and d&b were utilized as fill speakers for the rest of the theater. An XTA Electronics DP428/448 Audio Management System and Meyer Sound Galileo 616 Loudspeaker Management System as well as a wireless microphone package from Sennheiser and an intercom system from Clear-Com were also included.

“In addition to the high quality gear provided by Masque Sound, the sound system worked well thanks to the hard work of our team,” says Trarbach. “Production Sound Engineer Andrew Keister and John Cooper, who handled the backstage audio, both did a wonderful job.”

700 Sundays won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event and the 2005 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance. The limited nine-week engagement will continue through January 5, 2014 at the Imperial Theatre (249 West 45th Street). HBO will be filming the play for a special that is slated to air in 2014.
