Gotham ‘Conquers’ HBO Mini-Series With Yamaha QL/Rio Assist

BUENA PARK, Calif.—HBO’s miniseries Show Me A Hero from The Wire co-creator David Simon, is based on a non-fiction book by Lisa Belkin. The six-hour mini stars Oscar Isaac as Nick Wasicsko, the youngest big-city mayor in the nation, who finds himself thrust into the center of a racial controversy when a federal court orders him to build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town, Yonkers, New York during 1988-1992. His attempt to do so tears the city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys his political future.

Gotham Sound and Communications in New York City was brought in to augment the audio production using a new Yamaha QL5 Series Digital Console and Rio1608-D input/output box. “We recreated many meetings in the City Council Chamber, during which there were large heckling crowds hurling insults at the Mayor and Council, states Frank Stettner, production sound mixer for the show. The Mayor and Council all had microphones in front of them that we wanted to make practical to cover their scripted dialog.”

The heckling crowd consists of five different scripted hecklers plus a yelling crowd. “My normal setup is an 8-channel Cooper CS 208 D mixer with its direct outs feeding an 8-input Dante device, but it would not provide me with enough inputs, says Stettner. The show’s workflow requires me to mix mono all audio sources in real time to Track 1 on a pair of Sound Devices 970 64-track digital recorders for syncing to picture for the Dailies. I record all stems used in that mix to isolated tracks for use in post-production.”

Stettner said the big council scenes got beyond both his number of inputs and his number of fingers. With 15 total speaking parts, it became necessary to expand the system so he contacted Peter Schneider at Gotham Sound who suggested the Yamaha QL and Rio as the best way to meet the scene’s needs. “It seamlessly integrated with my existing Dante based gear,” notes Stettner.

Paul Padilla, the on-location consultant from Gotham Sound, put together and installed the QL and set up the computer network that tied all parts together. “Using the Rio with the QL gave us a lot of flexibility, Padilla said. It allowed us to route audio to and from a remote room without the need to run additional cable. Interfacing the Yamaha QL with another Dante base rig made for a very pleasurable experience.”

Once Stettner rolled his cart into the room where the QL was setup after finishing some smaller scenes elsewhere in the building, the team connected the network, time code, word clock, and assigned the direct outs to the 970 inputs quickly via Dante; ready long before the lighting and camera setup was completed.

“Specifically, the workflow consists of the Yamaha Rio connected to the 12 practical, historically accurate, Shure SM57s. This was then brought via Cat5 to Gotham’s network hub, which connected my system and computer to the QL, Stettner continues. The mics were routed to the QL inputs and the 970 Iso tracks via Dante. Larry Provost, my colleague, then used the Yamaha QL to make a mono sub mix of the fixed mics following the script. I took this sub mix into my Cooper and added it to the mono Dailies mix along with the five radio mic sources I had on the scene’s protesters plus a boom mic for the crowd.”

“Augmenting the show’s main audio package with the Yamaha QL mixer has worked out rather nicely and seamlessly integrates, thanks to Dante,” notes Peter Schneider, Gotham Sound and Communications.

Stettner said the flexibility of using the Yamaha QL and Rio made what would have been a long, stressful and time-consuming cable mess in the old analog days, into a fast efficient setup. “Gotham and Yamaha make the good work we do even more possible.”

Industry Study Finds that 55% of Enterprises Plan to Implement Physical Security Locks for Laptops, Notebooks and Mobile Devices in 2015

Findings show 73 percent say that BYOD represents greater security risks for their organization, and yet 59 percent still approve the use of personal devices for business usage.

According to MarketsandMarkets, a leading research and consulting firm, has completed a new global market forecast for BYOD and enterprise mobility. The firm projects the BYOD market to nearly quadruple in size over the next four years. Currently valued at $72 billion, MarketsandMarkets expects annual growth of 26.6 percent for a projected value of $284 billion by 20191.

The survey – summarized in a new infographic at Kensington.comwhich was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2014, found that across multiple B2B vertical industries – including Education, Healthcare, Financial Services, Retail and Manufacturing – CEOs, CIOs, CSO, and IT professionals are significantly concerned with how BYOD is impacting the security of their enterprise environments. To address these concerns a number of physical security measures are being leveraged with varying adoption and as many as 55 percent report that they are considering further investments in this security area.

Among the physical security measures being used, the simplicity of using device locking mechanisms is among the most cost effective and reliable solutions an organization can put in place.

Physical security measures in use by survey respondents included:

  • 64 percent use employee training and guidelines
  • 61 percent use anti-malware and encryption
  • 55 percent have employed compliance and governance policies
  • 48 percent use data loss prevention and authentication solutions

The company’s update from its previous USB 2.0 connectivity line to the faster USB 3.0 addresses industry trends marked by slimmer laptops with fewer ports and wires; a plethora of USB equipment to connect, charge, and sync; and increased use of mobile devices. Additionally, the update includes a new 7-port USB hub and the ability to charge mobile devices.

The 4-Port Hub ensures that users can connect all of their USB peripheral desktop accessories, with each of the four ports supporting fast transfer speeds.

USB 3.0 4-Port Hub plus Charging, Model UH4000C — The UH4000C offers the same benefits found in the standard 4-Port Hub, but each of the four ports also double as chargers for mobile devices, providing a convenient way to plug in and keep device batteries topped-off. With 3 AMPs available, users can choose any of the ports to provide a fast charge for a tablet and a smartphone, or other combination of low-power devices. Charging ports are compliant with USB BC 1.2 standard and compatible with BC 1.2 devices such as iPad Air and iPad mini. (Users should check their device specs.)

USB 3.0 7-Port Hub plus Charging, Model UH7000C — This 7-Port Hub and Charger ensures that users can connect all of their peripheral desktop accessories to a laptop, as well as quickly charge their smartphone or tablet. Each of the seven ports can support USB 3.0 transfer speeds to allow for more efficient work. The ports also double as chargers with 4 AMPs available, allowing for use of any port to provide a fast charge for up to two tablets, a tablet and a smartphone, or any other combination of low-power devices.

USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter, Model UA0000E — Many newer laptops do not come with an Ethernet port, leaving users only WiFi to get connected to the Internet. This Ethernet Adapter provides a wired connectivity option with extremely fast Gigabit Ethernet transfer speeds where wireless access isn’t available or if a user has a broken internal network card.

USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter plus 3-Port Hub, Model UA3000E — The UA3000E offers the same benefits found in the standard Ethernet Adapter, but also includes three USB 3.0 ports for additional device expansion.

Each of the five new USB 3.0 Hubs and Adapters also offers the following features:

  • Lightning-fast, gigabit transfer speeds. Using USB 3.0 technology, the 4-Port and 7-Port hubs support transfer speeds up to 5 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The Ethernet Adapters offer gigabit transfer speeds (also 10 times faster than USB 2.0) and provide an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100/1000 BASE-T performance.
  • Plug and play operation. The 4-port and 7-port hubs allow users to simply plug the expansion hub into their device, with no need for an additional power source or driver downloads. The Ethernet Adapters require a one-time driver download via WiFi and subsequent installation, and then can be plugged into devices, ready to go.
  • Near universal acceptance. The adapters are all compatible with devices running Windows® 8.1/8/7/Vista/XP and Mac OS® X 10.6 or later operating systems.

Calibre LEDView scalers power big screens for Yorkshire’s fabulous ‘Grand Depart’

While more than 5 million fans lined the roads of Yorkshire for the opening weekend of the 2014 Tour de France, relatively few got close to the action itself. For those who could not, help was at hand in the form of large LED screens powered by LEDView image-scaling technology from Calibre UK.

The key screens were supplied by two companies – Lightmedia and Big TV – both of which specified Calibre’s LEDView530 as their large-display image scaler of choice for the Grand Depart.

Lightmedia supplied 19 LED screens along the route of the two opening stages from Leeds to Harrogate and from York to Sheffield, with many of them acting as the visual centrepiece for official Tour de France fan parks.
