Bauder Audio Provides Support for Record-Breaking Camp Out for Hunger Benefit

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Bauder Audio Systems, Inc. (Philadelphia) and Indre Recording and Production (Havertown, PA) provided support, once again, for WMMR Radio’s Preston & Steve Show 2012 Camp Out for Hunger benefit. A complex, around-the-clock, five-day, live remote broadcast involving VIP guests, bands, outdoor stunts, and two dozen tractor trailers gathering food from thousands of generous people, The benefit collected a record-breaking 627,678 pounds of food and over $100K in monetary donations. Featured guests hailed from the worlds of sports, music, TV, and politics.

The event takes place in a large tent installed in the parking lot of the Metroplex Shopping Center in Plymouth Meeting. Bauder provided a new Yamaha CL5 digital console for use at FOH and for bands monitor mixes along with a Yamaha M7CL digital console with a Dugan-MY16 card for broadcast. The tent PA consisted of all NEXO loudspeakers powered by NXAMP 4×4’s and 4×1’s. PS15 R2s and RS18s were used for the main PA while PS10 R2s and PS8s were used for fold back and fills. The live bands were mixed down by Indre Recording’s broadcast truck outfitted with a Yamaha DM2000 and fed back to the M7CL.

“Whenever I’m working on a NEXO PA, I tend to simply pop the presets and go, as opposed to executing the normal laborious tuning process that other “out of the box” systems require,” states Chris “Sully” Sullivan, FOH Engineer. “It’s refreshing, and certainly saves money on labor calls.” Sully also used the new Yamaha CL5 digital console and said, “Even with no formal training on the CL5, within minutes I found my hands intuitively finding all of the knobs my brain was asking for….”

12 channels of stereo play back can be used for any given live band performance, helicopter landing, or other stunt taking place during a remote Preston and Steve Show. The core of the broadcast consists of five people talking about any number of topics on the radio. “In addition to the five primary mics, I can have anywhere from two hardwired guest mics to 10 wireless mics up and all running at one time,” states Rodney Byrd, Assistant Chief Engineer, Greater Philadelphia Radio Group. “With the introduction of the Dugan card for the Yamaha M7CL console, it has changed the dynamics of how I mix the show so much that it is now on my equipment rider. The sound quality that we experienced during the week of Camp Out for Hunger sounded like we were back in our own studio. I was able to walk out front and hear the PA without having to worry about whether all of the mics were up. It is like having an A1 that you don’t have to talk to; and it just works right out of the box.”

Indre Recording and Production of Philadelphia recently installed a Yamaha DM2000 digital console in their flagship remote truck. The remote recording package now offers 96 channels of audio from the stage via fiber optic snakes and MADI integration. “The DM2000 is doing double duty, serving as the main mixing console as well as a full Pro Tools control surface for the truck’s HDIII recorder,” states Michael Comstock, Owner and Head Engineer, Indre Recording.

Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype, Salesforce.com, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work.

“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Global to the Top 100 Winners. We believe Visual Unity Mobile embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Visual Unity Mobile should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was the strongest it has ever been.”

Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration. This assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the track record and standing of start-ups relative to their peers, allowing Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list a valuable instrument of discovery and advocacy for the most promising new business models from around the world.

Visual Unity Continues To Provide Czech TV With Streaming Services For The Next Two Years

Leading broadcast and multiscreen systems integrator Visual Unity has signed a new, two year contract with Czech TV to supply the technical services needed to operate its on-line and mobile service, iVysilani.

Czech TV has won a number of awards for its internet and mobile activities, including the prestigious 2011 Kristalova Lupa Award.

“Online consumption of Czech TV content has grown enormously in past years. Ivysilani.cz is a unique platform with more than 2592 days of video,” Pavlina Kvapilova, Executive Director of Czech Television´s New Media Division. “Enhancing our streaming infrastructure towards the highest quality, stability and user comfort which is available is a key factor for us to be able to serve this interest and react on changing lifestyle habits of our public.”

The new contract, which was awarded through a public tender process, will run until December 2014. Visual Unity’s vuMedia™ integrated content management and delivery platform is already used by iVysilani for content delivery, live streaming and Video on Demand services. Under the terms of the new contract Visual Unity will deliver various enhancements to the platform and supply additional back-end encoding, streaming, transcoding and media management services.

“Visual Unity has extensive experience of designing, delivering and integrating turnkey TV systems, broadcast-IT convergent and multiscreen solutions,” says Tomas Petru, President of Visual Unity. “In recent years we have undertaken a variety of successful projects for Czech TV, including the design and build of an eight-camera High Definition Outside Broadcast vehicle and the enhancement of the broadcaster’s online and mobile services, enabling it to deliver unprecedented coverage of the recent Olympic Games in London.”

The new contract will see Visual Unity increasing Czech TV’s live streaming capacity from 60Gbps to 88Gbps in 2013 and 110Gbps in 2014, to support the broadcaster’s 12 live streaming channels. Czech TV has also asked the company to increase storage capacity for its Video on Demand archive – a service Visual Unity has been providing since 2005. The broadcaster currently has a capacity of more than 70TByte and this will be expanded to over 160TB by the end of 2014.

“To implement the terms of this new contract we have developed a number of new features for our vuMedia Content Delivery Platform that will, of course, be available to all our customers,” Tomas Petru adds.

ACCLAIMED HEAVY METAL PRODUCER, ENGINEER, AND MUSICIAN ANDY SNEAP “TOTALLY LOST” WITHOUT HIS METRIC HALO PLUG-INS

SAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA: As a founding member of pioneering thrash act Sabbat, Andy Sneap secured his place within the canon of British heavy metal at a very young age. A devastating guitarist and a talented songwriter, Sneap also showed an interest and proclivity for the critical tasks that took place on “the other side of the glass.” Indeed, he produced two of Sabbat’s successful and highly-respected albums, which, combined with a network of industry friends and a reputation for good work and dependability, earned him a steady flow of production and engineering work for his early-1990s, ADAT-centered home studio. As his prestige grew, his circle of friends and clients grew to encompass the big players in the genre, and Sneap is now credited with over one-hundred works with acts such as Exodus, Machine Head, Napalm Death, and Kreator. He received Grammy nominations for his work with Killswitch Engage and Megadeth.

Sneap is as busy as ever these days. He recently completed producing, recording, mixing, and mastering Testament’s Dark Roots of Earth and Accept’s Stalingrad from his now vastly-updated digs, Backstage Studios. At the same time, he’s active in the 2006 reformation of Sabbat and the 2008 reformation of associated act Hell, both of which keep him busy during the summer festival season. When we spoke with him, Sneap was mixing Saxon’s forthcoming release (the band’s twentieth album!) between festival dates and gearing up to mix a new one for Killswitch Engage and to record Anonamar’s latest. Metric Halo’s ChannelStrip plug-in is one of the essential tools that Sneap has relied on to deliver the kind of mixes that put big, big smiles on the faces of musicians, label executives, and fans. He recently expanded his Metric Halo palette with the Production Bundle, a comprehensive collection of Metric Halo plug-ins.

“I was turned onto Metric Halo ChannelStrip way back in the late 1990s, when I first started using Pro Tools,” said Sneap. “A friend suggested that if I liked the SSL sound, I’d like Metric Halo ChannelStrip. He was right, and it has since become absolutely essential to the way I mix. Truly, every single mix that I have completed in the last fourteen years used Metric Halo ChannelStrip. There are no exceptions.” As part of the continual upgrade of Backstage Studios, Sneap recently added an analog outboard Solid State Logic processor. “It’s great,” he said, “but there’s no way it can replace Metric Halo ChannelStrip!”

Sneap is happiest and most satisfied when he can pilot a project from start to finish, filling the roles of producer, recording engineer, mix engineer, and even mastering engineer. And because he is an accomplished guitarist, his rapport with the musicians he works with makes his sessions uniquely productive, characterized by an easy exchange of ideas and suggestions that never come off as offensive. However, Sneap also recognizes that shrinking budgets have forced many bands and labels to shoulder the recording responsibilities all on their own. As a result, more of his work is shifting to mixing and mastering only.

Associated with that shift is a greater need to “fix” aspects of the recording that don’t arrive in good condition to meld with his mixing style. Here, he is beginning to explore the world of processing possibilities embodied by the Metric Halo Production Bundle, which includes ChannelStrip 3, Character (an analog circuit modeler), HaloVerb, Multiband Dynamics, Precision DeEsser, TransientControl, and Multiband Expander. “The TransientControl has been especially useful for highlighting the ‘ring’ in Saxon’s snare sound,” he said. “And I’ve been using the Multiband Dynamics to zone in on the vocals, where some awkward and nasty stuff was happening around 2kHz.”

Although Sneap bemoans a certain lack of songwriting polish in modern metal that has strayed from the genre’s origins in the late 1970s, he’s quick to assert that modern metal’s sound is nearly ideal. “It’s true that things are becoming a bit too corrected… a bit too cut and paste,” he said. “I prefer a more raw recording, one that conveys the energy and emotion of the actual performance. But at the same time, I think that if I was turning in mixes that sounded like late 1970s albums – though a lovely retro thing to do – people would be disappointed. The power of a modern metal record stands far above those old recordings.”

And Sneap cannot fully convey that power without Metric Halo ChannelStrip. “I’ve tried every plug-in, every channel strip, and nothing can give me the smack, the front-end pop, and the warmth of Metric Halo’s classic,” he said. “I simply cannot complete a mix at a remote location without it. I would be totally lost. With the release of ChannelStrip 3, that is not a concern. The Production Bundle and all its plug-ins are authorized via iLok so I can take the software wherever I go. I’m grateful that Metric Halo continues to update ChannelStrip.”
