HARMAN’s Soundcraft® Announces ViSi iPad Remote Control for its Digital Console Range, With the Chance to Win an iPad!

FRANKFURT, Germany – Prolight & Sound 2012 marks the unveiling and preview of the new HARMAN Soundcraft® ViSi Remote iPad app, which enables a single iPad to control multiple consoles from the Soundcraft Vi Series™ and Soundcraft Si Compact range on one wireless network.

The Soundcraft ViSi Remote app allows users to roam around in a venue and not only adjust input channel levels and mutes, but also adjust aux send levels and matrix sends, and level and graphic EQ settings on bus outputs.

The app uses HARMAN’s HiQnet™ architecture to connect a network of consoles to a wireless router, which communicates with the iPad.

For even more flexibility, multiple iPads may be used on the same network, even on the same console, so that individual artists could control their own monitor sends, for example.

The Soundcraft ViSi remote is expected to hit the iTunes store at the end of April 2012, and by pre-registering on the Soundcraft website users will not only be informed immediately when the app goes live, but will be entered into a prize draw to win an Apple iPad. (conditions apply, see website for details: http://www.soundcraft.com/apps/visi-remote).

Yamaha StageMix Version 3 Takes a Bow

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced a major update for the StageMix iPad App available for Yamaha M7CL and LS9 digital consoles. StageMix Version 3 enables even greater control and ease-of-use in live sound and sound reinforcement applications such as houses of worship and performing arts centers. StageMix Version 3 makes its official debut today at ProLight+Sound in Frankfurt.

In 2010, Yamaha released the first application of the StageMix iPad App for the M7CL console, allowing engineers to quickly adjust monitor mixes from the performance position onstage or anywhere in the audience immediately hearing the effects of the adjustments. In 2011, the Company released a similar StageMix iPad App for use with the LS9 console. The StageMix App provides greater control and flexibility for both digital mixing consoles and enables the mixing engineer to freely adjust console parameters and sound levels by wireless control, rather than at the mix position.

New functions for StageMix V3 include: Mute Group Masters; Channel Naming;
Channel Pan; Send Levels in Meter Bridge; Tap Tempo; Edit Mixer Setting (i.e. IP and MAC Addresses); Bank Navigation in Long Faders mode; Selectable Input and Output Meter Positions; EQ Type I / II button in EQ screen; HPF ON button is always available in EQ screen; and DCA Faders (M7CL only).

“As we celebrate our 25th year in providing high-quality digital technology products, we continue to be at the forefront of developing high-performance products for our customers and end users,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “With input from our customers based on their needs and feedback, the combination of StageMix Version 3 with an M7CL or LS9 will provide even greater flexibility and convenience when making important and necessary mix adjustments.”

StageMix Version 3 for the M7CL or LS9 will be available in April 2012 and can be downloaded free of charge via the Apple iTunes Store.

For more information on StageMix Version 3, visit Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. at the NAB 2012 Show on April 16, booth #C2239 or via the web at www.yamahaca.com.

THE KILLS LIVE WITH METRIC HALO

philip_harvey.JPGSAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA: When The Kills went on a tidy fifteen-show tour of North America in support of Blood Pressures (Domino Records), culminating in their ten year anniversary show in New York City, they brought along trusted FOH and recording engineer Philip Harvey (Modest Mouse, White Stripes). In addition to delivering the tuneful and carefully-crafted lo-fi of The Kills to the fans who flocked to see the duo in the flesh, Harvey was also charged with the task of recording the shows. On loan from the Amsterdam Recording Company, where he serves as head engineer, Harvey crossed the ocean with his trusted Metric Halo interfaces and the confidence that they would capture the musical soul of the band’s performance night after night.

Harvey was introduced to Metric Halo gear and software during his seven-year tenure as the FOH engineer with Medeski Martin & Wood. “It was around 2000 when the folks from Metric Halo approached the band,” he explained. “They showed me the Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882, which was their top-of-the-line interface at the time. I was amazed to learn that I could reliably record twenty-four tracks with my Macintosh G3 laptop and three 2882s. The thing had something like 256 MB of RAM, and with all the processing taken care of by the Mobile I/Os, Metric Halo could always coax an incredible performance out of it.” At the same time, Metric Halo demonstrated its SpectraFoo sound analysis software to Harvey. “Since then, I’ve used all the other programs, including a few quirky iPad apps, but nothing compares to the smooth, musical performance of SpectraFoo,” he said. “I’ve come to trust the tight correspondence between the reality of what I’m hearing and its visual representation in SpectraFoo.”

Because The Kills only had a trailer for gear on this tour, Harvey had to keep his rig as light and compact as possible. A Digidesign SC48 digital console fit the bill and still afforded him plenty of flexibility. He installed a XO16 output card into the SC48 to feed sixteen channels or groups to his Metric Halo ULN-8. In addition, he tracked both the mix output from the board and a M/S pair of AKG 414s as audience microphones with his Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882. In all, he recorded twenty inputs of every performance using Metric Halo’s rock-solid MIO Console software to the custom installed internal hybrid hard drive on his 2011 MacBook Pro. After doing some experiments in rehearsals, Harvey determined that the whole rig sounded significantly better if he let the Metric Halo ULN-8 serve as the master clock.

“Since I’ve been working with Metric Halo equipment for over a decade, I’ve come to appreciate the company’s extreme commitment to ensuring that everything it sells is future-proof,” said Harvey. “It is the exact opposite of the ‘planned obsolescence’ business model that pervades the industry. I bought the MIO 2882 I use today in 2000, and then a couple of years ago they sold me a 2d card for a fraction of the price of a new interface… it increased its processing power by a factor of five! What other company is that serious? And then, of course, you have the ULN-8, which sounds absolutely amazing. Between the pre-amps, converters and clocking, I use it when recording, mixing, and mastering. It reveals things in the mix that other interfaces completely smear over.”

Harvey used the fifth input on the Metric Halo 2882 to feed an Earthworks TC40k omni-directional mic to the Metric Halo SpectraFoo sound analysis software that was constantly up and running on his MacBook Pro. “It’s all the routine stuff that SpectraFoo makes easy,” he said. “I adjusted the soundcheck mix to compensate for all the bodies present at the show. I watched for frequency buildups. I watched my volume by calibrating the volume to an SPL meter, which is a simple thing to do with SpectraFoo. I even used it to identify the precise delay time between the board and the ambient mics, which is crucial when going back to mix these live recordings.” When not on the road, Harvey uses SpectraFoo at the Amsterdam Recording Company to analyze the recording and control rooms and to deliver consistent, error-free mixes.

Harvey has logged many hours of live recording with his Metric Halo interfaces, notably, he recorded Under The Great White Northern Lights while on tour with The White Stripes in 2008. Although the fate of these particular recordings is not yet determined, it’s a good bet that they’ll find their way to fans in many forms. Recordings from previous tours have been available on The Kills’ website, on live videos, and as promotions on other websites.

Barix Announces Wi-Fi Voice Paging App for iOS Devices

New app gives iPhone, iPad users a true IP audio paging solution — without the complexity of IP

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 31, 2012Barix AG, a pioneer in IP audio, control and monitoring, brings voice paging to the iPhone and iPad via the Barix Wi-Fi Paging App — the first open-standards IP and multicast voice announcer application for mobile iOS devices.

The Barix Wi-Fi Paging App, now available in the iTunes App Store, enables zoned voice paging from iOS devices on commercial, public and residential properties. Barix’s open-standards approach turns nearly any VoIP or IP Audio receiving device into a simple IP paging/announcement system. Besides the full range of Barix IP Audio devices, many IP phones are supported, as well as third-party IP Paging gateways and speakers. A one-time configuration process ensures that users can quickly set up a paging solution for immediate and ongoing use without hassle.

“Barix is bringing more than ten years of knowledge and leadership in VoIP and IP audio devices to the smartphone universe,” said Johannes G. Rietschel, CEO and founder of Barix. “The Barix Paging App draws from our professional IP Audio and paging knowhow to make Wi-Fi paging available for millions of smartphone owners across commercial, residential, medical and professional markets.”

Ease of use is central to the Barix Paging App. Upon download, users add existing paging receivers such as IP phones, IP speakers or VoIP paging gateways in the setup part of the application. Multicast addresses can be used to set up zones with multiple receiving devices. Configurations are stored within the app or an optional location device, ensuring a one-time setup process per site. For existing Barix customers, the configuration process can automatically discover Barix IP Audio devices.

Users can assign photos to each device or zone to create clear visuals for the paging targets. Once setup is complete, users can make announcements to one, many or all configured targets by simply touching the appropriate zone icons and initiating audio with the “push-to-talk” soft-button. Real-world applications include calling the kids for dinner, making general announcements to all classrooms in a K-12 school, paging doctors in a hospital, and announcing new security measures across a large corporate campus.

All Barix VoIP-enabled IP Audio products are compatible with the Wi-Fi Paging App, including:
• Single- and multi-zone VoIP Paging Gateways (Exstreamer and Annuncicom two-way audio product families)
• The “IP Speaker without the speaker” (Exstreamer P5)
• The ruggedized Annuncicom 155 for use in harsh environments
• The Exstreamer 205, which provides up to 50W output power for high-quality music distribution applications — and now Wi-Fi Paging
• Affordable Power over Ethernet (PoE) master paging stations (Annuncicom PS1 and PS16)

More information can be found at http://www.wifi-paging.com or the Barix homepage.

Yamaha Announces Worldwide Launch of Three New Product Series

BUENA PARK, Calif.—In a one, two, three punch, Yamaha unveils to the world today three exciting new product series additions to their loudspeaker and mixer product line. At the NAMM Show, executives from Yamaha Corporation Japan and the Pro Audio & Combo Division of Yamaha Corporation of America shared in the initial announcement of the new products, a joint sales effort with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc.,

Yamaha DXR Series active loudspeakers: Comprised of four full-range models—the DXR8, DXR10, DXR12 and DXR15, deliver exceptional sound pressure levels and high-definition sound in a more compact, versatile design. High-efficiency 1100W Class-D amplifiers and Yamaha-mastered DSP, combined with an intelligent onboard mixer with flexible IN/OUT connectivity, a very functional enclosure design, makes the DXR Series ideal for front-of-house, floor-monitoring, rigged applications, and a multitude of commercial applications. The DXR is quite advanced in that it features a three-channel signal input on the speaker’s back panel enabling end users to mix their own settings as well as a unique Mixing/Link function for daisy-chaining additional powered speakers. Inputs include XLR, ¼” TRS, and RCA jacks, with signals from the inputs mixed inside the DXR unit. Each channel has its own level control and the XLR input can accept MIC/LINE sources. Each DXR cabinet features a built-in, selectable-frequency High Pass Filter (HPF) for use with a subwoofer.

The DXR speakers provide DSP-assisted EQ (Dynamic COUNTOUR) tailoring the frequency response when used as floor monitors or mains. Proprietary FIR-X filtering ensures that the DXR cabinets perform under all circumstances, even at very high levels. FIR-X tuning technology achieves a more accurate and smooth response, better clarity, and imaging than what is possible with crossovers that are currently available.

All models incorporate integrated rigging points for installation using standard rigging eyebolts, and optional U-brackets are also available for additional installation versatility. All models also feature built-in, dual-angle pole mount sockets for vertical or angled applications.

Yamaha DXS Subwoofers: Joining the new DXR series are the high-powered DXS12 and DXS15 active subwoofers that will further enhance the DXR speaker’s performance. Newly developed D-XSUB technology dynamically controls the low frequency range, and by adding BOOST mode, you’ll experience more punch in the overall sound. The new sub’s XTENDED LF mode will enhance the bottom end of the low frequency range. Ideal for commercial installation in churches, schools, regional performing arts venues, and a multitude of applications requiring high SPL, the DXR and DXS provide stunning clarity and an unsurpassed level of reliability.

“The DSR Series launched last year has been very well received by the commercial marketplace, and we have utilized every internal resource of our development team, including collaboration with NEXO, to ensure that the DXR and DSX are as well received as the popular DSR,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc.

The new Yamaha DXR Series is now available at a suggested MSRP ranging from $829 to $1,199. The DSX will be available in February with an MSRP for the DSX12 sub of $1,049 and $1,199 for the DSX15.

Yamaha MGP Mixers: Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the PM200 analog mixer and the 25th anniversary of the launch of the DMP7 digital mixer, Yamaha officially launches a premium mixer series with the debut of the new MGP12X and 16X analog mixers. These mixers are in a class by themselves. With proprietary DSP providing Ducker, Leveler, and Stereo Image functions—three very essential features in commercial installations, the MGP mixers will be a welcome addition to any school auditorium, small church, or corporate installation. The MGP Editor app for iPhone/iPod Touch will allow access to further detailed parameter editing of DSP functions of the Ducker, Leveler, REV-X and SPX effects. The app will be available free of charge on Apple iTunes.

The MGP analog sound starts with a discrete Class-A mic pre-amp with an inverted Darlington circuit design. Utilizing Yamaha’s proprietary X-pressive EQ, the MGP mixer captures the ultimate analog sound by reproducing unique frequency characteristics of sought-after classic EQ circuits. High resolution Yamaha REV X and SPX EQ effects modules are also integrated for additional processing. And, at the heart of the MGP’s compact configuration, a new and innovative approach has been taken to utilize digital technology within the MGP analog mixer by adding iPod/iPhone integration via onboard USB for direct digital playback and charging. The superb functionality of the Stereo Hybrid Channel adds warmth and musicality to the mixer’s premium analog sound.

“Our customers who prefer the ultimate in analog sound at the level of the MGP have played an important role in this mixer coming to market,” says Lopez. “The MG line and our new MGP premium mixer will continue to capitalize on our 40+ years of experience in development of renowned analog mixers combined with the impact we have made over the past 25 years in digital products.”

Each MGP has two FX sends, two AUX sends, four Group Buses and a Stereo output. The 12-channel MGP12X features six mic inputs and12 Line inputs (four Mono + four Stereo). The 16-channel MGP16X features 10 Mic inputs and 16 Line inputs (eight Mono + four Stereo). All mic inputs have individual phantom power and HPF options and each input channel features the renowned 1-knob compressor and 3–band X-pressive EQ with sweepable mid band.

The MGP mixers are housed in a rugged metal chassis with optimized internal construction for minimal noise, integrated rack ears for rack-mounting for fixed installations, and a multi-voltage, internal power supply that allows for worldwide use in any region using 100V-240V.

The new Yamaha MGP mixers will be available this spring at an MSRP of $829 for the MGP12X and $999 for the MGP16X.
