Lightware Unveils 4K Compatible TPS Wallplate Extenders with Remote Powering

wp_umx_tps_extendersLightware USA has announced the next stage of the development of the Lightware HDBaseT product line: the wallplate version of the UMX-TPS series, which will launch early 2015. They are the ideal solution for many small meeting and classroom applications or as part of a larger multi-room system when paired with a Lightware MX series Modular Matrix.

The Lightware UMX-TPS products are designed to transmit multiple video formats at resolutions up to 4K. Video, audio and control can be sent up to 170 meters at 1080p over a single CATx cable with these extenders. The WP-UMX-TPS-TX120-US model supports VGA and HDMI while the WP-UMX-TPS-TX130-US adds DisplayPort to the list of formats it supports.

The TX120 extender is designed to handle digital and analog video and audio signals, e.g. VGA, YPrPb and HDMI1.4 with analog stereo audio from local inputs or embedded 7.1 HBR audio. The TX130 model adds DP 1.1 signal support to the roster.

Analog audio and video signals are converted to digital formats in the extenders, which can transmit the audio and the video signal separately from each other. Units offer bidirectional and transparent RS-232 and Ethernet transmission and unidirectional and transparent IR transmission. The IR and RS-232 connections also support command injection from the MX series Modular Matrix. Remote powering is available through the single CAT 5e/CAT 7 cable, but a local power supply can also be used.

“The two new extenders are compatible with any of the currently available TPS receiver products and can be incorporated into the MX series modular matrices which size up to 80×80,” says Lightware USA Director of Sales, Drew Taylor. “They will ship early in 2015.”

Lightware USA has also unveiled the TPS-PI-1P1, a new remote powering solution supporting the PoE standard and providing power to a remote TPS transmitter or receiver.

Based on this new PoE technology, every TX and RX unit will be power receivers or can be fed locally by a power supply. Remote powering can be achieved by using the TPS-PI-1P1 single-port power injector unit, which is optimized for HDBaseT transmission.
The TPS-PI-1P1 can be placed anywhere in the TPS transmission chain. The incoming data stays untouched, and the signal quality is unaffected. But a 48V DC remote power is added to the signal by the device.

The unit provides unidirectional remote power only, but thanks to a 12V local output option, the other device can also be powered by the TPS-PI-1P1 if they are placed close to each other. No power supplies for the TX or RX are needed. Power for the injector itself is provided by its own power adapter, which is included. The unit has four front panel LED indicators for monitoring operations and troubleshooting.

FOH Engineer Greg Walsh Chooses DPA Microphones For Kate Bush’s Before The Dawn Shows

Kate Bush Before The Dawn Show

Greg Walsh, Sound Design and Front of House Mixing Engineer, chose a selection of DPA microphones to capture the sound of Kate Bush’s hugely successful Before the Dawn series of concerts at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.

After 35 years away from the live stage, these much anticipated concerts received high praise from reviewers and fans who frequently commented on the exceptional audio quality and the clarity of Kate’s vocals.

The decision to use DPA microphones was made following extensive testing by Greg Walsh and the production team, which included renowned audio engineer Stephen Taylor who was responsible for Kate’s vocal processing and monitor engineer Ian Newton, who sadly passed away earlier this month.

“I knew about DPA, having originally discovered Bruel and Kjaer [DPA's predecessor] in the mid-1980s,” Walsh says. “The larger capsule microphones such as the original B&K 4007 have been my first choice for acoustic guitar, drum overheads or ambient pairs for percussive and orchestral sources ever since.”

For the Hammersmith Apollo shows, Walsh specified DPA’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones for a number of instruments, including percussionist Mino Cinelu’s rig where they worked well on the Bougarabou, Djembe and Floor Tom.

“Their small profile allowed us greater positioning flexibility and the supercardiod pattern gave us tight focus on the sound source and excellent rejection,” he says.

Walsh also specified a DPA d:dicate™ 4011 Recording Microphone as a central focus mic for shakers and other hand held percussion, wireless DPA d:screet™ 4060 Miniature Omnidirectional Microphones for the accordion and tambourine, and a wireless d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphone for the djembe in the ‘minstrel’ sections of the show.

“Despite their small size the d:vote 4099s proved to be very robust and reliable. They were quiet, had excellent transient response and gave me a very workable natural sound,” Walsh says.

The Before the Dawn shows also gave Greg Walsh an opportunity to try DPA’s hand held d:facto Vocal Microphone for the first time.

“Finding a vocal microphone with a dynamic range capable of capturing the broad range of vocal performance and styles was obviously paramount,” Walsh explains, “We tested most of the available handheld microphones before deciding that the d:facto was the right choice. We opted for the wireless version, which we used with a Shure UHF-R system, and it proved to be very reliable and stable.”

In total, seven d:facto microphones were used on stage – five for the Chorus and two for Kate Bush. DPA also created a custom headset mic with a d:facto 4018V capsule that allowed Kate to perform with her hands free.

“We also used two DPA d:screet 4060 Microphones for the filmed segments of the show which were shot in a water tank at Pinewood.” Walsh says. “They were small enough to be concealed in a life jacket and were also very resilient to water ingress.”

Since completing the Before the Dawn shows, Walsh has been working on other projects, including a recent concert in Russia that involved a rock band and a 64 piece orchestra.

“I had no hesitation in specifying DPA d:vote 4099s for the orchestra, all members of which were individually mic’d,” he says. “DPA are an excellent company and provided fantastic support. I have known many of the team, in particular Ralph Dunlop and Pete Wandless, for many years and would like to thank them for their support.”

Renkus-Heinz Fits the Bill at the Aratani Theater in Little Tokyo

Los Angeles, CA – January 2015…. Located in Little Tokyo, the historic heart of the Japanese American community in Los Angeles, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) was the dream of visionary first and second-generation Japanese American pioneers to create a permanent community center where arts and culture could come alive and flourish for future generations. Since first opening its doors in 1980, the JACCC has evolved into one of the largest ethnic art and cultural centers in the U.S.

Among the JACCC’s facilities is the 880-seat Aratani Theatre. The Aratani stages a range of performances year-round, from music to dance and drama, requiring a sound system that can meet those versatile requirements. JACCC representatives were not happy with the Theater’s existing sound system, and called upon audio consultant Gerald Ishibashi to recommend a solution. After analyzing the room and considering the multi-use performance needs, Ishibashi recommended Renkus-Heinz IC2 steered array systems for front of house, and RH-Series systems for stage monitors.

“The Aratani is a nicely designed room, but their existing system was not a full range solution,” Ishibashi explains. “They’ve had continual issues with poor intelligibility and inconsistent coverage in some areas. I’ve used Renkus-Heinz products for years, and their beam steering technology is just the best there is. When the new IC2 systems were introduced, I felt it would be a great solution for the sound issues in the hall.”

For the front of house system, Ishibashi recommended a pair of IC2-FR Digitally Steerable arrays on either side of the stage. “We brought the IC2 cabinets into the room and, because the arrays are steerable, we were able to ground stack them instead of flying the arrays, which eliminated line of sight issues. Ralph Heinz came in and commissioned the system, and it sounded great. The clarity and articulation was just amazing, and it was consistent to every seat in the house.”

For stage monitors, Ishibashi recommended six 12-inch RH123 Three-Way Loudspeakers and a pair of 15-inch RH153 Three-Way Loudspeakers.

“The first test of the system was a live performance by The Association,” said Ishibashi. “Being a vocal group, I knew this concert would be a good test of both the house and monitor systems. After the show, the band members were ecstatic about the sound, both on stage and in the theater.”

A subsequent show with Jackson Browne confirmed his decision. “Jackson’s engineer has exceptionally high standards, and I could see he was initially a bit skeptical of the system,” says Ishibashi. “After the show, he made it a point to tell me how happy he was with the sound. That’s the thing with the IC2 – people are initially skeptical because they are used to a curved line array. But everybody that hears the IC2s loves them.”

Hyderabad-based Namdhari AV Adds HARMAN Professional’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers to its Inventory

NamdhariAVHYDERABAD, India – Namdhari AV is one of India’s leading audio/video rental companies, having provided sound, lighting, staging, exhibit design and other services for a number of the country’s biggest events and concerts since 1982. Continuing their commitment to providing clients with nothing less than the very best, Namdhari AV became one of the first companies in India to purchase a complete HARMAN Professional JBL VTX Series line array system, along with Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers.

Namdhari AV recently made the decision to upgrade its rental and tour sound inventory and has already had great success with JBL VERTEC® line arrays and Crown I-Tech HD amps at events like the Bharatiya General Party campaign for the 2014 Indian general election and many others. “It was only logical to make the move to a JBL VTX and Crown system after considering all options and brands,” said Gurmukh Singh, owner of Namdhari AV.

“It was apparent to us that VTX is becoming the new international standard in line arrays and we wanted to bring this standard-setting performance to India,” Singh continued. “Equally important, we knew we could rely on HARMAN Professional India unequivocally for sales, engineering and product support.”
Namdhari AV purchased 18 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array elements, 12 S28 subwoofers and six G28 ground-stackable subwoofers, along with accessory kits for transporting and covering the speakers. The company also added Crown I-Tech 12000HD Series amplifiers to power the loudspeakers and subs. “A big part of the extraordinary performance we’re getting from VTX is the implementation of the V5 presets on Crown I-Tech HD amps that optimize V25 performance,” Singh pointed out.

The VTX V25 is a true 3-way system design featuring JBL’s proprietary D2 Dual Diaphragm Dual Voice Coil compression driver, which delivers dramatically increased high-frequency sound pressure levels and power handling with greatly reduced distortion. The V25 employs two 2267H 15-inch Differential Drive woofers, four 2169H 8-inch ultra-linear midrange transducers and three 2430K D2 dual drivers. Its Radiation Boundary Integrator (RBI) waveguide provides a more seamless transition between the high-frequency and midrange drivers and its S.A.F.E. suspension system provides improved hardware that enables faster and more secure rigging.

Namdhari AV has wasted no time putting its new VTX system to the test at high-profile events like the 2014 Navratri festival in honor of Goddess Durga, which drew more than 20,000 attendees, and the HUM HAIN Umeed-e-Kashmir benefit concert.

“We are extremely happy to have brought the V25 aboard,” said Singh. “It’s more powerful, more efficient, is easy to use and install and has been totally reliable. Sonically and technically, it is a flagship product. It’s just what we need to handle bigger venues and offer even more value to our clients.”

“This is an exciting new development in the Indian pro sound market,” said Sundar Raj Thaddeus, National Sales Manager – Tour Sound, HARMAN Professional India. “We have worked with Namdhari AV for many years and their progress in the tour sound industry has been impressive to witness. Stepping up to the new JBL VTX and Crown I-Tech HD system is a logical next step in their advancement as one of the region’s leading audio providers.”

“We are excited to present these new products at ShowStoppers as they represent both our design engineering expertise and the customer feedback we take into account when developing products,” said Amy Turpie, Marketing Communications Manager, Kensington. “With the new solutions, we’ve addressed the security and data protection concerns for mobile devices as they get smaller and more compact. In addition, the new products give users greater flexibility and increased productivity through power management, and more efficiency when using multiple devices when on the road or in the office.”

The new products will be announced on January 6, 2015: http://www.kensington.com/us/us/3699/news-press-center.

More Kensington products on display at ShowStoppers and The Bellagio include:

  • Trapper Keeper and Pee-Chee Tablet Cases: Kensington has brought these iconic themes back with a modern twist for today’s tablet user. The Mead-inspired cases are designed with the images that are now synonymous with students and academics from the 1980s — from sporty athletic patterns to colorful floral and artistic prints. The universal folio provides overall protection for assorted 7” and 10” tablet models. As students rapidly adopt digital tools to complement the customary pen and paper, these cases make a perfect companion for tablets used in educational environments. Built to keep a slim profile, the case is easy to carry along with school books and slip into a backpack. A secure magnetic flap and versatile 4-corner silicone base keep the tablet snug for protection, but also allow for easy removal if needed.
  • SafeGrip™ Rugged Carry Case and Stand: Wrapping the iPad Air in a tough, padded case complete with screen protection, the SafeGrip Rugged Carry Case and Stand can withstand drops, bumps and scratches, whether being used by kids in the classroom or mobile professional. A thick, sturdy handle is perfect to help prevent drops, and also functions as a two-position stand. The built-in stylus holder means fewer fingers on the iPad Air Retina display, and less chance of spreading germs during the cold and flu season.
  • BlackBelt™ Rugged Case: The Kensington BlackBelt Series of rugged cases offers military-grade tablet protection in three degrees to cover a variety of needs, so the iPad Air or iPad mini can be used in rough environments without fear. Every model features a tough, yet lightweight band that surrounds the tablet and was designed to meet the U.S. military’s MIL-STD-810 testing protocols for all-around defense against drops and scratches. Because the iPad’s curves are particularly vulnerable to damage, the cases offer extra thick corner protection. A raised bezel preserves the iPad screen, and a clear back protector provides additional insurance against scratches. The 1st and 2nd degree cases preserve access to all iPad Air or iPad mini ports, controls and cameras, making charging and syncing easy. The 3rd degree case utilizes port covers to protect the tablet from dust and debris.
  • 48W 4-Port USB Charger: Kensington’s 48W 4-Port USB Charger allows users to power up to four tablets and smartphones on their desk at the same time using PowerWhiz™ Technology. This technology allows almost any device to be plugged into the charger because it automatically recognizes a device and gives it the fastest charge possible while remaining completely circuit safe. Users can mix and match any combination of devices into any of the four USB ports, and each port can carry up to 2.4 AMPs of power to ensure that even tablets get a speedy charge. Additionally, the charger only needs a single wall socket to charge device batteries.

In addition to showcasing its products, Kensington will host a Happy Hour on January 6 and 7 at the Da Vinci II Ballroom, 5-6 p.m. Guests are invited to come by Kensington’s “SecureBack Bar” for a beverage, followed by a swing with a golf club simulator for a chance to win prizes.

Media who are interested in attending the Happy Hour and/or who would like to arrange a meeting with Kensington staff to learn more, may contact Denise Nelson at 925.858.5198 (mobile) or dnelson@theventanagroup.com.

HARMAN Professional Powers Italian Digital Audio Training Session At Acoustic Light

HARMAN_AcousticLightPERUGIA, Italy – The main audio integrator within its local region in Italy, Acoustic Light recently completed a successful acoustic training session featuring new audio products from HARMAN Professional. By using Soundcraft consoles, JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, AKG microphones, Lexicon digital effects processors and BSS signal processors, Acoustic Light showcased the latest digital audio technology for a variety of applications.

Participants at the event included sound engineers, musicians, and other audio service providers. For the training session, Acoustic Light used a Soundcraft Vi3000 console with a Stagebox, a Soundcraft Si Expression 3 console with a Compact Stagebox and a Soundcraft MH3 console (48 channels) with an analog Stagebox.

“The Soundcraft consoles were invaluable in improving the participants’ understanding of the various audio products in the signal chain,” said Stephan Luthi, owner of Acoustic Light. Everyone obviously loved the Vi3000 and wanted to take it home, but the Si Expression also has a nice learning curve due to its simple layout. Since most people at the event were accustomed to analog consoles, being able to compare the MH3 with the digital consoles side by side definitely opened up a new world for them.”

Also featured were JBL PRX715 and SRX700 loudspeakers, Crown I-Tech 4000 amplifiers, AKG C 414 LTD and C 451 B microphones, Lexicon PCM81 and PCM91 digital effects processors, and BSS AR-133 and FCS-960 signal processors. These products allowed Luthi to explain the basic concept of audio design to the musicians while showcasing advanced features for the engineers.

“We chose these products to show participants how to properly tweak the system and position the microphones in a way that will enhance the intended sound, rather than inhibit it,” said Luthi. “Overall, everyone was impressed by the quality of the products offered in their price range.”
