Florida Baptist Church Converts (A/D) with Symetrix

OCALA, FLORIDA – AUGUST 2014: The sound system at Trinity Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida is quite sophisticated for a sanctuary that seats approximately 800 congregants. It delivers left-center-right imaging to nearly every seat from multiple loudspeaker positions, including six time-delayed left-center-right zones that cover the areas farthest from the pulpit. This system was installed by Pro Sound & Video in 2004 and although the loudspeakers and amplifiers have held up well, the original DSP processing system that performed the complex routing and filtering did not. Florida-based Pro Sound & Video, Inc. replaced the original processing system with two Symetrix Radius 12×8 Dante™ network audio DSPs and augmented their sixteen combined outputs with two SymNet xOut 12 audio output expansion boxes. All of the units network seamlessly via Dante and replace all of the old analog processing, with plenty of processing power to spare for improvements.

“The system at Trinity Baptist is really nice with almost every seat getting a left-center-right experience,” said Michael Frazee, project manager with Pro Sound & Video. “However, the old processing system was based on a system of five digital processors that were cross wired with analog and AES patches to share various signals between the processors. This worked well for a long time, but one of the main processors went bad, and since the original components are out of production, it became clear that a new system would be required. To say the least, the Symetrix new generation of open architecture, Dante networking processors would afford us a considerable amount of signal handling flexibility to handle the complex processing tasks required for the multi-zone LCR system.”

The required processing includes equalization, distribution, and crossovers for the various speaker zones, which are comprised of the main house system, distributed LCR systems, stage monitors, and additional recording and general distribution mixes. Two Radius 12×8 DSP and two xOut 12 audio output expansion units form one integrated processing network via Dante with 24 inputs and 40 outputs. Programming the system, despite its complexity, was straightforward using Symetrix’ Composer software. “Circumstances in this case necessitated my involvement at the programming level. The Composer software was very predictable, but when I ran into a few snags, I contacted the tech staff at Symetrix, and they were very helpful in resolving programming issues.”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.

BOCK AUDIO ACCURATELY CAPTURES THE CLASSIC SOUND OF A TUBE 47 IN THE MODERN BOCK 407

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – AUGUST 2014: Just as he has captured the sound of the vintage Telefunken 251 in the Bock 251 and the sound of the vintage Neumann U47 FET in the Bock iFet, studio microphone genius David Bock has now captured the sound of the vintage Neumann U47 tube microphone in the new Bock 407. As with Bock’s other products, TransAudio Group will distribute the Bock 407 in the United States. Studios and individuals who want the timeless 47 sound will find it in the Bock 407 at half the price of a vintage unit and without the reliability and serviceability issues for which vintage microphones are so horribly notorious. Indeed, David Bock gained most of his critical insights into the 47′s sound by servicing a seemingly endless parade of vintage units that marched into his shop.

“The Bock 407 has that smooth, creamy midrange you associate with a 47, along with the signature proximity effect that vocalists like Robert Plant and Frank Sinatra used so famously,” said Brad Lunde, president of TransAudio Group. “It sounds stunning. Importantly, David designed the 407 to use new ‘old stock’ materials: materials that are in current production and that replicate the properties of vintage materials that are no longer being made. The Bock 407 is affordable, consistent, reliable, and, when the time eventually comes, easily serviceable.”

The Bock 407 borrows its power supply and amplifier from the flagship Bock 507 and adds a custom k47-type capsule that David Bock tirelessly prototyped and adjusted to bring to its current perfection. The microphone has a cardioid pickup-pattern and ships with a remote power supply, a professional spider-type shock mount, and a custom twenty-foot cable that connects the microphone to the power supply. In addition to its signature “big vocal” sound (both male and female), the Bock 407 will shine a beautiful light on brass, strings, and percussion. It can also serve as the whole solution for small ensembles or simple guitar and vocal performances.

TransAudio Group is currently taking orders from dealers and suggests that interested users contact their dealers for a demonstration.

Kreative Teknik AB Illuminates Ullevi Stadium’s Iconic Pillars with HARMAN’s Martin Exterior 400 Wash Lights

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — As one of the largest arenas in the Nordic region, Sweden’s Ullevi Stadium recently completed a renovation that increased its capacity from 54,000 to 75,000 people featuring 43,000 seats with another 32,000 in standing room. Located in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, the outdoor arena was inaugurated in 1958 when the country hosted one of the world’s most prestigious soccer competitions. However, as the stadium has aged it has undergone a series of renovations, the first in 1985 when the stadium’s iconic concrete pillars on either side of the main entrance were reinforced. Further renovations in 2004 brought Swedish lighting design firm Kreative Teknik AB on board to light the pillars and recently the company retrofitted their original design with six of HARMAN’s Martin Professional Exterior 400 light fixtures.

Each pillar features three Exterior 400 fixtures mounted over 200 feet or 65 meters above the ground, shining both up and down to ensure the entire length is evenly covered. The lighting is controlled by a CueServer-system via DMX that allows for the facility manager to easily change the appearance through a simple click on the touchscreen or by a pre-programmed calendar.

Martin’s Exterior 400 now produces a much brighter and crisper light with more saturated colors when compared to the earlier models Kreative Teknik installed back in 2004. Today, the Exterior 400 line boasts a brighter light with lower power consumption of 139 W, down from the 575 W of its predecessor. Additionally, the fixture’s advanced LED technology limits downtime and maintenance costs while increasing the life span from 2,000 hours to 40,000 hours.

“Once again Martin’s fixtures were the best choice and we are extremely proud of the result of this project,” said Marcus Persson, CEO and Owner of Kreative Teknik AB. “We chose Martin because of their well-documented quality of outdoor fixtures in installations and their exceptional ability to support us with spare-part handling.”

The lighting concept was designed to allow the city’s population to know what type of event was being held inside the venue, such as blue and white washes over the pillars to signal a soccer match for the local team. The color-changing technology and rugged design of the Martin Exterior 400 made it a clear choice for Kreative Teknik.

“The technology has changed drastically since we first installed a number Martin’s Exterior 200 and 600 at the stadium,” said Persson. “Almost a decade has passed and Martin’s been a proven innovator in LED technology, energy-efficiency, RA-index and fixture design. The Exterior 400 is a great example of their ability to provide designers with advanced technology to empower their creative visions.”

HARMAN Professional Delivers Superb Sound in New Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium

BIBVEWADI, PUNE, India — The city of Pune has a new cultural attraction to be proud of – the recently completed Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium, an 850-seat facility built to host Marathi-language theatrical productions and other events. Named for the noted social reformer and writer, the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe auditorium has an understated yet striking architectural design and an elegant interior with the finest quality appointments and audio/video facilities throughout, including an audio system built around HARMAN Professional’s JBL, Crown and dbx.

Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Auditorium was built under the auspices of government agency Pune Municipal Corporation, which chose Zillion Solutions of Pune as the systems integrator thanks to the firm’s more than 25 years of experience in auditorium installations. “The time span to install the audio system was only five days,” said Pankaj Pansare, Zillion Solutions’ proprietor. “Five days for everything – from receiving the loudspeakers and components to installing, EQing and calibrating the system in time for opening night.” As if that wasn’t enough pressure for Pansare and his team, the installation was the first government project Zillion Solutions had ever undertaken.

Pansare knew he could turn to HARMAN to help him meet the tight time requirements and provide loudspeakers and products that would deliver world-class sound. “We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Zillion Solutions over the course of many successful projects,” noted Rohan Tadke, National Sales Manager, HARMAN Professional India. “They know our products offer sound quality, performance and reliability that’s second to none and we know they trust us as a valued partner to provide technical and design assistance and deliver products on time no matter what.”

HARMAN Professional India supplied 12 JBL VRX932LA-1 Constant Curvature loudspeakers, along with two VRX915S subwoofers, two SRX712M stage monitor/utility loudspeakers and 10 Control 1 wall-mountable loudspeakers. The loudspeakers are driven by seven Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers. Additional system components include a dbx DriveRack 4800 Loudspeaker Management System, dbx 234 stereo crossover and dbx 231 dual-31-band equalizer. “We needed a system that provided high-quality sound with even coverage throughout the auditorium, and was easy to operate and be totally reliable once installed,” stated Pansare.

The speakers were deployed in a somewhat unusual manner, since no fill loudspeakers were specified for the balcony by the architects. The JBL VRX932LA-1 loudspeakers were placed to cover both the main auditorium floor and the balcony, with the upper line array elements in the cluster aimed at the balcony and operated at a higher volume than the rest of the speakers via the dbx DriveRack 4800. “This combination actually works so well that we don’t miss the presence of fill loudspeakers at all,” Pansare pointed out.

The system was calibrated using HARMAN HiQnet Audio Architect™ software. Pansare noted that Audio Architect enables him to optimize a system to its full potential, and makes the process faster and easier than by any other means he’s used previously. The result was all Zillion Solutions hoped for and more. “The engineers from Pune Municipal Corporation were highly impressed with the sound quality and performance of the system and its ability to deliver even coverage and clear, intelligible audio throughout the auditorium.”

Pansare proudly noted, “Because of the hard work and dedication of our team and the support that HARMAN provided, the system was working a day earlier than we promised.”

Philadelphia Funk Authority Displays True Multitasking Skills With HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 Console

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Catering to weddings, private events, festivals, clubs and concerts in and around the tri-state area, Philadelphia Funk Authority comprises hardworking individuals whose passion is playing funk, soul and R&B music from the ‘70s to today. Since the band’s members all maintain regular jobs during the day, it opted for a HARMAN Soundcraft Si Expression 2 console to mix its shows from the stage, foregoing the need for extensive technical training on a difficult-to-use console.

Heading up the technical department for the band is Andrew Kowal, a trumpet player who has been a musician for 30 years. While taking on the responsibilities of an onstage mixer, he needed an intuitive console that allowed him and the band members to simultaneously control the sound dynamics of the show and their own performances. The Si Expression 2 was chosen for its effortless workflow, flexible outputs, and the ability to mix on the fly.

“While onstage, I can operate the console and other band members can tweak their monitor mixes, meaning that we required an intuitive solution that could keep up with our dynamic pace,” said Kowal. “Having 24 channels is very comfortable for a 9-piece band with four lead singers and three horns, but having the flexibility to mix five discrete monitors at the same time while playing music is great!”

After acquiring the Si Expression 2, the band members noticed how much less gear they needed to transport to each show. With the Si Expression 2, no longer were they required to juggle additional racks and outboard equipment, resulting in a setup time of less than an hour. Even an extra feed into a house PA system only takes a couple of minutes to set up.

“I love everything about the console, especially the FaderGlowTM feature, because it’s so nice to light up only the faders that are in effect, so I don’t need to waste time on finding the right faders,” said Kowal. “I like having instant access to the graphic EQ, filters, compressors, as it makes everything so much easier and faster. Basically, everything improved for us overnight.”

NRJ TV Finds Versatile Solution in HARMAN Studer Vista 1 Digital Console

PARIS, France – NRJ TV has recently purchased a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 digital console for its television control room. NRJ TV has a television control room and two studios to manage the production of its NRJ 12 channels, Chérie 25 and NRJ Hits. Both channels broadcast news and live shows every day.

According to Cédric Drapeau, Technical Manager, it was important to upgrade to a console that could sustain the network’s production growth. “We have a variety of programming that takes place here at NRJ 12 and Chérie 25, so we need equipment that provides a high level of versatility to meet our varying needs,” he said.

To that end, NRJ chose the Studer Vista 1 digital console, which fits perfectly into the network’s technical environment.

The audio configuration of the two studios is based on an EtherSound network, allowing for easy routing and management of signals between the two TV studios and the control table. The Vista 1 has an EtherSound connection that can control over 32 inputs and 32 outputs to perfectly interface into the network.

The Vista 1 is highly suited to broadcast applications, with an integral DSP engine of 96 channels. The Vista 1 can handle mono, stereo and 5.1 inputs with ease, and is provided with 32 mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs and eight stereo AES inputs and outputs on rear panel connections.

Patchwerk Recording Studios’ Nick Bassani Keeps On Track With HARMAN’s JBL LSR308 Studio Monitors

ATLANTA, Georgia – Patchwerk Recording Studios is one of the top recording and mastering facilities in the United States. The Atlanta studio has recorded more than 60 platinum and gold albums and worked with a who’s who of rap, hip-hop, R&B and pop artists including 50 Cent, Sean Combs, Pit Bull, Flo RIda, Jay-Z, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Kanye West and dozens of others. It’s music based on bass, and producers, artists and listeners want more and more of it, notes Patchwerk’s tracking engineer Nick Bassani, which is why he relies on HARMAN’s JBL LSR308 powered studio monitors as his go-to near-field loudspeakers.

Bassani recognizes in the urban music scene “there’s an insatiable appetite for more low-end response in the music and this creates a challenge for urban market producers and mix engineers. Many monitors and even headphones out there cater to this appetite with low-end response that’s often misleading and just plain inaccurate.”

Bassani feels the JBL LSR308 is the perfect solution to the need for for bass-accurate near-field monitors. “Accuracy and clarity tend to be expensive – but not in the case of the LSR308. They’re not ‘boomy’ or exaggerated in the bass, yet have more low-end response along with far better high-frequency extension—all the way up to 24kHz—than any other near-field I’ve used.”

The powered-bi-amplified LSR308 employs a long-throw 8-inch woofer and a 1-inch woven-composite neodymium tweeter that is mated to JBL’s exclusive Image Control Waveguide™, developed for the company’s new flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor.

“The LSR308’s wider frequency response and clarity and ability to let me ‘hear into’ the mix at lower volumes has caused me to make huge improvements in my overall mixing technique,” said Bassani. “Thanks to the exceptional definition of the woofer and tweeter and the accurate on-and off- axis coverage pattern of the waveguide, the stereo image is deep and wide and the clarity is phenomenal. I can hear reverbs and delays extremely well.” Bassani also found the LSR308 “a godsend” when its improved resolution allowed him to begin experimenting with mid-side panning in his mixes.

Bassani asks: “Suppose an artist or producer wants to be sure that what they hear in their mixing environment translates accurately to the next studio they work in, or in their car or home?” “To be honest, that’s what really sold me on the LSR308. During a project, we were tracking in a studio that had a nice vocal booth but the control room was not the best. We replaced the existing control room speakers with a pair of LSR308 monitors and I noticed an instant improvement in the transferability of my rough mixes between the studio, my home and another professional studio where I work.”

After that experience, Bassani installed the LSR308 at Patchwerk’s Studio 9000 (one of Patchwerk’s main tracking and mixing rooms) and has never looked back, saying he is “unable to part with them.” He now takes a pair of LSR308 monitors to every room on any project he’s involved with, whether it’s a small project studio or a multi-million-dollar facility. He concluded, “I know that if I get my mix sounding great on the JBL LSR308 monitors, I’ll never have anything to be worried about.”
