DPS Inc. Provides HARMAN’s Martin Lighting and Controllers for Jesus Culture’s Live Album and DVD Recording

SACRAMENTO, California — Jesus Culture, which began as a youth group at a church in northern California, has become a global movement that includes conferences, events, campus ministries, and worship curriculums dedicated to demonstrating the love and power of God. To commemorate its recent relocation from Redding, California, where it was based for 18 years, to Sacramento, the Jesus Culture band recorded ‘Unstoppable Love’, a live album and DVD, at Sacramento’s prestigious Memorial Auditorium. With the help of HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting console and fixtures, Lighting Designer Robby Kurtz was able to both successfully represent the Jesus Culture movement and showcase the importance of its relocation. California-based rental house DPS Inc., provided the lighting production equipment.

Kurtz deployed 32 of Martin’s MAC Viper Profile moving head luminaires and 26 Martin Atomic 3000 Strobe fixtures, to create a complicated design that ensured each song had its own look and, at the same time, kept the audience’s attention from being drawn to just one visual element.

The design featured 14 MAC Vipers hung from trusses above the stage with six on the stage deck and 12 additional Vipers around the audience to give the cameras aerial effects and to backlight the crowd. “The MAC Vipers were the main profiles for visual effects on the back wall and in the air,” said Kurtz. “I used gobos with a super-wide zoom setting and the light was able to cut through the other visual elements on the stage. Also, the Viper optics and speed are two of the main reasons I chose them for this event. The Zoom and Focus whips around at close to Iris speeds, which is awesome!”

Martin’s Atomic Strobe lights were also used throughout the production with additional fixtures hanging on DPS Inc.’s custom-built pipe hexagons that are suspended over the stage. “The Atomics are always a great way to help build audience energy during songs,” said Kurtz.

Kurtz also used Martin’s M6 lighting console to control the entire design. “I’ve been using the M-Series console platform since 2004 so having the M6 for this event was a perfect fit,” Kurtz said. “DPS provided 330 intelligent fixtures that spread over 25 universes and the M6 really helped me to spread out and have enough power to drive all the fixtures. The console worked like a champ and was extremely stable. With all the assignable encoders, it makes for a really fun desk that is very quick to program.”

As an avid user of Martin’s ShowDesigner software since MSD 4 Gold, Kurtz now owns the recently introduced MSD 6. “The Show Designer software is a great tool for programming offline,” said Kurtz. “I spent a couple of days building the foundation of the show at home, which saved a ton of time on-site.”

Kurtz said that the powerful combination of Martin and DPS Inc. was a critical part of capturing the essence of Jesus Culture. “The Jesus Culture band and ministry was very happy with how the event turned out and with what they have seen of the video,” he said. “The combination of Martin and DPS Inc.’s expertise resulted in an event that really represented Jesus Culture well and was true to the movement. Martin never disappoints with its new products and innovations. The quality and dependability of Martin products prove that they’ve been designed and tested for the biggest shows in the world.”

New PESA Xstream C22 Compact Streaming System Offers Flexible AV Configurations for Sharing Content

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading designer and manufacturer of professional audio and video distribution solutions, will introduce its PESA Xstream C22 compact streaming system at InfoComm 2014 (Booth C6014), which runs June 18-20 in Las Vegas, Nev. The latest addition to the PESA Xstream family of multi-channel HD IP streaming devices, the C22 includes I/O options for standalone streaming applications or as part of a larger hybrid broadcast system.

The C22 can be configured as a two port video encoder or two port decoder, orcan include one of each. It includes HDMI, coax and Ethernet (for an IP-based camera) video inputs, and optional SFP modules allow multiple configurations (fiber, HD-BNC, A-to-D, D-to-A and other SFP modules) for expanded connectivity. The C22 also supports two external audio sources, which can be synchronized to either or both video streams during an event.

With built-in genlock, video signals can be locked to an external source for glitch-free video switching in broadcast and pro AV applications. An HDMI out allows for local preview, while an integrated Web server allows full remote control, so no personnel are required on site for streaming content to a production facility.

“The PESA XStream C22 is an affordable streaming solution for so many markets, including medical or educational applications, justice and government, security and first responders, and sports and entertainment production. The dollar-to-stream value is significant, especially compared to other products that only offer one video stream,” said Chris Thomas, PESA vice president of engineering and CTO. “It’s a great standalone solution or it can be used with other routing equipment to share content between facilities.”

Multiple C22 units can be used to allow AV professionals to compress, stream and share high-quality content between locations and enable streaming in existing video distribution. The C22 is also an ideal bi-directional content sharing solution. Two C22 units can be configured with one encoder to send video and one decoder to receive video, allowing live interaction between sites.

The PESA Xstream C22 will be available this summer.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Introduces High-Humidity Grilles for Control® 10 Series Ceiling Speakers

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN’s JBL Professional is introducing the MTC-14WG and MTC-16WG high-humidity grilles for its industry-leading Control® 10 Series ceiling speakers. These grilles fit JBL’s Control 12C/T, Control 14C/T, and Control 16C/T, as well as Control 26C and 26CT. Made of an aluminum alloy material that does not rust and finished in a durable powder-coat, these grilles can extend the longevity of ceiling speakers when installed in humid environments.

The MTC-14WG and MTC-16WG address the weakest link when using ceiling speakers in high-humidity applications: a steel grille that can rust. These high-humidity grilles extend the longevity of JBL’s Control 10 Series model ceiling speakers, as their aluminum alloy material does not rust and the durable powder-coated finish prevents pitting that could otherwise occur with raw unfinished aluminum. The finish provides a nice look that matches with the speaker.

“JBL has offered weather grilles for many of our surface-mount speakers and these MTC-WG grilles are the first such products for our ceiling speakers,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Manager, Commercial Sound, JBL Professional. “With these new grilles, our ceiling speaker models can be used in high-humidity applications, such as outdoor patios, business entranceways and restrooms.”

The MTC-14WG and MTC-16WG high-humidity grilles are available in either white or black.

New Jersey Township Chooses Yamaha CIS System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Township of Evesham, New Jersey courthouse is a typical municipal courtroom. It doubles as a non-jury courtroom, as well as a council meeting room and a township meeting room. Between the court and various town meetings, there can be up to 16 microphones on at any given time. The microphones need to be fed to the live speakers and for multi-track recording purposes.

ACIR Professional of Mays Landing, New Jersey was chosen to replace the live portion of the Township’s audio system in the hope of obtaining a cleaner, clearer sound. “In addition to obtaining a better quality sound, the customer still wanted to be able to send audio via multi-track to record,” states Vice President of Sales, Bobby Harper. “Having just demoed the new Yamaha CIS (Commercial Installation Solutions) Series products, the design became obvious.”

ACIR Pro chose a Yamaha MTX5-D processor with the EiX8-8 channel extender in order to accommodate the 16 inputs required. The processor also handles the routing of multi-track and a 4-zone (mix minus) to the Yamaha XMV4280-D Dante-enabled 4-channel amplifier. Yamaha VXC8W speakers were chosen for their clarity and ease of installation. The speakers are zoned for maximum gain before feedback. With assistance from a Dugan MY-16 Auto Mixer card installed in the MTX5-D and the extensive parametric EQ capabilities on each zone output.

Harper said the volume and clarity before feedback was staggering for both courtroom and meeting pre-sets. The presets were stored in the Yamaha MTX5-D library. Recall is available from an in-wall mounted Yamaha DCP1V4S-US controller that the clerk has at his/her fingertips. “Overall Yamaha was selected because of its new all-in-one CIS solution.”

ACIR also installed a Yamaha HS Studio Monitor along with 16 Shure MX418 D/C microphones.

Litepanels Introduces ASTRA 1×1 Bi-Color Fixture

Company Raises the Bar with Next Generation LED Panel Series

(CHATSWORTH, Calif.) – Litepanels®, a Vitec Group brand and premier provider of LED lighting for the broadcast and production industries, has announced the release of its new ASTRA 1×1 Bi-Color panel. Building on the legacy of the company’s original 1×1 fixture, which revolutionized the lighting industry, the ASTRA 1×1 sets a new standard for the form and function of professional LED panels. Following the Litepanels tradition of a one square foot form factor, the ASTRA 1×1 Bi-Color offers a light output that is up to four times brighter than the company’s traditional 1×1 Bi-Color fixture, high CRI (Color Rendering Index), and user selectable active or passive cooling modes.

The innovative daylight to tungsten tunable color model is the first in the company’s new ASTRA line of panels, with additional fixtures in the series set to debut later this year. While the original Litepanels’ 1×1 series was often imitated by competitors, its quality and performance has never been duplicated. In keeping with that tradition of excellence, the development of the next generation ASTRA product line was years in the making and every design element was meticulously crafted.

“The original Litepanels 1×1 has been used on thousands of sets and shoots worldwide since hitting the marketplace,” noted Chris Marchitelli, Vice President of Marketing for Litepanels. “We’ve always known that our next generation panel would need to push the performance envelope, so we approached our new ASTRA line very thoughtfully. We took our time, drew from our wealth of experience building professional LED fixtures, and accessed the wonderful feedback we’ve gotten from our loyal customers. The time, effort, research and development we put into the ASTRA series has produced an LED panel that is truly astounding, yet highly affordable. When you put your hands on this light, you’ll see that we exceeded our own expectations.”

The ASTRA 1×1 Bi-Color panels are designed with select premium quality surface mount LEDs that are paired with custom designed TIR (total internal reflection) optics. The fixtures offer a tunable Bi-Color output, allowing users to adjust color from daylight to tungsten as needed. The high CRI LEDs have also been formulated to consistently deliver accurate color temperatures and visually pleasing color reproduction. Tightly binned LEDs and fine-tuned optics provide the new ASTRA 1×1 with higher intensity, a longer throw, and a wider effective beam spread than the company’s original 1×1 fixture. This allows the panel to compete with strong exterior light sources or illuminate a large area effectively with a single fixture.

Proper thermal management is the key to maintaining the long life and color accuracy of LED fixtures. To meet these demands, Litepanels’ ASTRA 1×1 offers both passive and active cooling modes. The passive cooling mode provides a completely silent operation, while the active cooling mode enables an ultra-quiet fan module and double light output. An internal microprocessor monitors the temperature, minimizes fan speed, delivers smooth dimming from 100 percent to zero with no noticeable color shift, and ensures a completely flicker-free performance at any frame rate or shutter angle. With the addition of an optional communications module, the brightness, color temperature and cooling mode of the fixtures are all controllable via DMX512 protocol.

Redefining the look of LED panels, the ASTRA series employs a modern, modular design. The modular-based ASTRA system currently includes a field replaceable fan module and the optional RJ45 DMX module with an LCD menu and function display. Additional wired and wireless communication modules are currently in development and will continue to be introduced to future proof the fixtures as new technologies become available. The unit’s manual controls are ergonomically designed for ease of use in the field, ensuring ready identification of dimming controls, color controls, and power status.

The new panels are produced with aluminum I-beam core construction to provide maximum durability and superior thermal management, and also feature strong, integrated aluminum accessory mounting points and lens/filter rails. The high impact, durable resin end caps feature downward angled exhaust vents carefully designed to direct air flow away from the fixture, minimizing obstructions and helping to prevent foreign materials from entering the panel.

“The ASTRA line is a very exciting addition to the Litepanels family of products,” commented Marchitelli. “We are always striving to set new standards and deliver the best in LED technology to our customers. We’ve done that with the ASTRA 1×1, which is likely the most versatile LED panel ever built. It’s both sturdy and lightweight, flexible and strong, and provides a higher output and better color than has ever been seen before. We’re especially pleased to be introducing this product at the Cine Gear Expo, as Los Angeles is where Litepanels got its start.”

The ASTRA 1×1′s extensive list of features continues in the curved yoke design with a wide tilt range, dual integrated cable guides, and a combination yoke mounted power supply with a 3-pin XLR locking power connector and optional Gold Mount(r) or V-Mount battery plates. The yoke also features a removable TVMP connector and additional 1/4-20 mounting points.

The ASTRA 1×1 Bi-Color panel will be available worldwide in the summer of 2014. For more information, visit Litepanels at www.litepanels.com or follow us on Facebook.

Nomad Sound Adds New NEXO STM, Yamaha CLs to Arsenal

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Nomad Sound of Austin, Texas recently purchased a new NEXO STM line array and Yamaha CL1, 3, 5 digital audio consoles to complement their rental arsenal. Since 2005, Nomad Sound has been supplying regional music festivals and several touring clients with world-class equipment along with very experienced technicians. The sound company recently had the opportunity to support a Willie Nelson show followed by Psychfest, both in Austin, multiple festivals, and South by Southwest, putting the STM to successful, but rigorous tests.

Regarding the purchase of the STM, Damon Lange, principal owner of Nomad said “we had realized a 4-way system was the right move to make, having grown our NEXO GEO S12 rig up to 48 boxes, we were looking at our options. When I heard there was an STM demo scheduled at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, I went down with Joel Hume, one of our lead engineers, and we spent two days listening and examining the rig. Once I heard the system and the clarity at 350+ feet as well as examined the rigging and listened to a small ground stacked rig, it was simply a matter of figuring out what configuration to start with.” Lange decided on a 48-box rig with 18 M46′s, 18 B112′s, and 12 S118′s, powered by four NUAR amp racks.

Nomad also added three Yamaha CL digital consoles to its inventory as well. “We started with a CL3 and a single Rio 32 input/output box and then added a CL5 and CL1. We have four Rio’s at this point, and the consoles are cased using Rock Hard captive leveling rigs. They’ve made a really slick console case that a single person can “table” the desk with one hand! We’ve had no issues with rider acceptability of the CL consoles, and anyone familiar with M7CL or PM5D can pretty much jump right in on the CL. The Premium Rack plug-ins are really amazing, and while we all have our favorites, mine is the Dynamic EQ, which feels pretty familiar if you’ve ever used the BSS901 to solve problems.”

For Willie Nelson’s show and Psychfest, the rig consisted of a 9 pair-per-side STM boxes over 12 STM subs on the main stage of both shows and 6 per-side S1210 rigs on the additional B and C Stages for the festival. These shows were followed up with two back-to-back gigs where the STM was ground-stacked three high over four subs for a festival at the historic Pearl Brewery in San Antonio as part of the Echale Concert Series, where Nomad also supplied a Yamaha CL5 at FOH and CL1 for monitors. The next day, Nomad used the STM as part of a three-stage festival in Austin for Fiesta Gardens with three NEXO rigs: STM ground stack on main stage and GEO S12 rigs on B and C stages. Again, the sound company brought in Yamaha CL consoles for FOH and monitors on B and C stages. For South By Southwest, Nomad added a NEXO S118 sub package.

“Nothing but positive feedback all around, Lange says. Everyone was really pleased as to how easy it was to get their mix right where they wanted it. One engineer mentioned how refreshing it was not to have to worry about the system at all. This was our game plan from the get-go; to provide a system where guest engineers can show up, mix, and leave happy without ever having to worry about system tuning/ tweaks. The festival scenarios with flown and ground-stacked systems, plus GEO S12 rigs complimenting as fills and side-stage rigs, really showcase how versatile and flexible the new NEXO STM rig is.”
