Indie Rock Band Wolf Alice Takes HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Performer 2 Console On UK Tour

LONDON, United Kingdom – Wolf Alice, an alternative indie rock band, recently bought a HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Performer 2 console for its tour throughout Scotland and England. While running the latest Si Performer V1.6 software, FOH and Monitor Engineer Andy Robinson improved the efficiency, workflow and sound reproduction of the band drastically with the new Si Performer 2 console.

This Si Performer 2 console came equipped with 24 channels and a Mini Stagebox, offering an additional 32 channels as well as a Cat5 Dual MADI card for the connection. An Si Dante card was also purchased for multi-track recording purposes, allowing the band to review its own performances between shows.

“We wanted a console with onboard reverb and effects, to eliminate a lot of the outboard gear when traveling between tour destinations,” said Robinson. “The Si Performer really shines when its recallable functions allow house engineers to recall features and settings for their specific needs. In fact, this is the best console to leave other engineers with, as it only takes them five minutes to learn how to use it for mixing a live show. The design is so simple yet effective, and that is why we use Soundcraft.”

“The new V1.6 software is great, the pre-dynamic send pick offs allow me to compress the vocals in FOH heavier. The FOH experience has been transformed, now that I can do monitors and compressors on one channel,” said Robinson.

For Wolf Alice, the main goal is to replicate the natural sound of the band’s recordings, while adding effects for the drums and vocals. Due to the space constrictions at some of the venues, the band needed a console with a small form factor that could be easily operated on the fly, while handling at least 19 channels for the four vocals, two guitars and one bass guitar. The Si Performer offers this package in an intuitive design, decreasing time needed for patching, line checks and tweaking.

“I love how great it sounds, especially when compared to other desks,” Robinson added. “I can really hear the compressors working, and they do exactly what I want them to do. Also, the EQ’s are responsive; I can hear even the slightest 3dB adjustments, giving me more control. The entire system can be tweaked offstage with the iPad app. None of the other consoles in the market can compete at this size.”

HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Array Loudspeakers Are the Unsung Heroes in “Sing My Song”

BEIJING, China – Music reality show “Sing My Song” is aired by CCTV3 and recently became a ratings winner in China. With a live audience of 300 people, the popularity of the show is largely attributed to its emphasis on original songs created by independent artists. To complement the ambitious direction of the show, HARMAN’s JBL VTX V25 line array loudspeakers were installed at the show’s live studio to enable the singers to showcase their original pieces of music.

Amidst many musical talent shows that focus on the contestants’ ability to sing cover songs, “Sing My Song” appeals to the artists’ creativity, rekindling the life and spirit of original compositions. The powerful, yet pure-sounding JBL VTX Series loudspeakers are the perfect choice for this program, as they deliver even coverage throughout the studio.

The main PA system features two groups of 10 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array loudspeakers each that are suspended and cover three sides of the stage. Beneath the stage are three groups of four JBL VTX S28 subwoofers each. Thanks to the JBL VTX LAC (Line Array Calculator) Software, each projected area of the loudspeakers is taken into consideration to calculate the energy output of each loudspeaker.

“The JBL VTX loudspeakers perform and sound amazing,” said Jin Shaogang, music and pitch instructor for the show. “The mids and highs of the V25 loudspeakers sound smooth and transparent, while the JBL S28 subwoofers pack a lot of power and add plenty of depth to the sound.” The performance of the VTX loudspeakers also sound impressive on a variety of instruments, and their world-class sound quality is able to bring entire audiences to their feet.

Thirty-two Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amplifiers power the loudspeakers, and the entire system is connected using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software, for the convenience of uploading the configurations for all the equipment during installation and sound debugging during live shows.

Four instructors Liu Huan, Yang Kun, Zhou Huajian, Cai Jianya were truly impressed by the “good songs and good sounds,” in reference to the excellent live audio quality that the JBL VTX line array loudspeakers bring to any stage.

HARMAN’s AKG Enters Red Bull Air Race World Championships 2014 with Wireless Microphone Systems

ROVINJ, Croatia – While Hannes Arch, co-architect of HARMAN’s AKG AV100 aviation headphones, was the winner of the Red Bull Air Race in Rovinj, Croatia, the moderator’s bench was left wanting for nothing with their own set of HARMAN’s AKG wireless microphones, headsets and in-ear monitoring systems. The AKG systems enabled flawless communication on and off the racecourse during the commencement and winner ceremonies.

The system at the Red Bull Air Race featured the AKG DAM+ Series gooseneck microphones, equipped with CK49 capsules for the desks, capturing the sound of live commentators and the winners of the contest. The capsule is designed to capture the best sound in any indoor and outdoor environment, honing in on voices at greater distances, and reducing pop noise at short distances. Combined with the AKG WMS4500, DHT700 and DMS700 wireless microphone systems, the announcers were well-equipped for the show.

“Red Bull wanted to bring pristine audio performance and crystal-clear communication to this competition, which is why these AKG systems were perfect solutions for the Red Bull Air Race,” said Walter Rührig, Artist & Key Customer Relations, AKG. “In an outdoor environment like this, it is essential that we provided gear like the CK49 with windscreens, to reduce wind and pop noise during interviews and live announcements. The equipment performed perfectly without hiccups, which is a testament to AKG’s reliability.”

Christie’s Book of Transformation Celebrates Projection Mapping Around World

Christie® has published and released The Book of Transformations – a ‘coffee table‘ style book that explores and celebrates how artists and technicians are using powerful projection display technologies to visually transform familiar structures and objects.
The Book of Transformations provides key visuals, core plans and technical details on scores of projection mapping projects done around the world using Christie projectors and complementary enabling technologies. It is available as a free downloadable app across multiple platforms, a PDF file and as a limited release hard copy publication.

Through more than 70 case studies, readers learn how giant office buildings, ancient temples and churches, landmark towers, bridges, performance stages and even athletic playing surfaces have been re-imagined and truly transformed using ‘light paint’ and the creative genius of event producers and artists.

Projection mapping involves creating an accurate, virtual version of a structure, and then using powerful professional-grade projectors to transform the characteristics of that structure using painted light and motion graphics.

Canada’s Parliament Hill Centre Block features Christie's projection mapping

The tablet version of The Book of Transformations includes images, embedded video and detailed narratives of how various structures and surfaces were mapped, recreated in software, and then given entirely new appearances using powerful projected light. The Book of Transformations also traces the history of the art form, provides an extensive primer on how projects are conceived and executed, and looks at the future of the technology and medium.

The free tablet app is available on Apple’s App Store for iPads and Google’s Play Store for Android tablets. A non-interactive PDF is also available free of charge, allowing all the showcases and supporting material to be readily viewed on other tablet devices, as well as PCs and laptops.

The book follows the early 2013 release of Christie’s ‘The Book of Shapes,’ which explored the projects and possibilities of the Christie’s groundbreaking Christie® MicroTiles® modular displays.

Book of Transformations – Designed To Inform and Inspire
“The feedback and marketplace demand for the Book of Shapes was extremely positive, so we started putting the plans together for this new publication even as the first one was being released,” explained Kathryn Cress, vice president, global & corporate marketing, Christie.

“With this new book, we wanted to not only inspire our partners and end-users with what’s possible using our projection technology, but also help explain the process and ingenuity behind some of the truly amazing projection mapping work we’ve seen around the world.”

Bart Kresa of Los Angeles-based BARTKRESA Design inspired the book’s title, having produced stunning visuals at events and installations on several continents. “It’s magic,” said Kresa, “when the audience doesn’t see this as being done with projection … when the audience doesn’t really know how it happens.”
Sorted by vertical categories: Celebrations & Festivals, Corporate, Government, Mega Events, Museums & Entertainment, Promotional & Branded, and Retail & Fashion, the Book of Transformations celebrates projects across several continents.

Featured projection mapping displays include iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, St. Basil’s Cathedral domes in Moscow’s Red Square and the La Scala opera house in Milan. There are also Middle East mosques and temples, grain silos along Canada’s St. Lawrence River, and an old courthouse in Chile – all brought to life with projection mapping.

The book also shows how motion graphic artists and technical producers push the boundaries of projection such as in South Korea and Singapore where water vapor has served as the digital canvas. In the U.S. and Spain, new motor vehicles have been tightly wrapped in fabric and magically transformed through multiple projections and the imagination.

The Christie Technology behind Projection Mapping
Christie’s 3-chip DLP® projectors are used around the world for projection mapping. A wide choice of resolutions and brightness levels lets users project rich, evocative displays on almost any structure or surface. Christie’s range of projectors feature up to 35,000 center lumens, and are equipped with either Xenon or mercury illumination, meeting the requirements for applications of any size and budget.

Christie Twist™ technology allows users to warp and edge-blend projected images onto irregular shapes or surfaces, and complicated multi-projector setups are made easy using camera-based systems such as Christie AutoStack™.

St. Louis Institution Installs Yamaha IF, MTX System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—In 1903, a St. Louis institution was born. The Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) has endured and thrived by remaining committed to being a premier athletic, social, and dining club for business, professional and civic leaders, and families in the St. Louis area.” Today, the MAC is recognized as one of the top private clubs in the United States.

The landmark building recently upgraded its audio-visual system in the Missouri Room, its main ballroom, used for banquets and receptions. The room can accommodate up to 550 people. TSI-Global (St. Charles, MO) was responsible for the design and installation. “The ceiling and walls are decorated with ornate plaster relief carvings, states Steve Keller, Senior Account Manager at TSI-Global, who personally designed the system. This, along with the age of the building, offered unique challenges of finding ways to mount large projection screens and loudspeakers while maintaining the look and feel of this classically elegant room.”

As part of the new system, TSI-Global installed ten Yamaha IF2208W loudspeakers that were custom painted to match the room. The speakers are processed using the new Yamaha CIS (Commercial Installation Solution) MTX3. TSI installed four DCP1v4S units to control six audio sources (three wall plate inputs, two Sennheiser wireless microphones, and a DVD player). “Two controllers are on the first floor and two controllers are in the balcony with duplicate controls so that the volume of any source can be controlled either upstairs or downstairs,” says Keller.

Keller said the Yamaha IF speakers were chosen for their wide dispersion and rotatable horns (the speakers were mounted horizontally and the horns rotated) and that the Yamaha CIS MTX3 processor is a cost-effective DSP; combined with the controllers, this set up became a simple way to control the individual source volume. “Being able to daisy chain the controllers simplified the installation as well.”

“We needed to replace an aging sound system that was overly complex and was unable to achieve adequate sound levels without feedback, states Rick Garrett, Director of Technology, Missouri Athletic Club. It was also very important to our staff and membership that any fixed installations not disturb the aesthetics of our 100 year-old grand ballroom. The new system was designed to be simple enough for use without the aid of tech support and still provide us the flexibility to accommodate very complex and elaborate audio/visual events when required.”

Garrett said all of the club’s managers, employees, and members were excited to see how well the new Yamaha speakers blended into their existing décor. “More importantly, he adds, with our new Yamaha system, we are finally able to achieve excellent volume levels and sound quality without the noise and feedback we had with our old system.”

Jesse French Wins the Chance To Convert To Prism Sound

Delicious Audio subscriber Jesse French is now the proud owner of a Prism Sound Titan audio interface after taking part in a competition that ran in a recent edition of the online newsletter ((http://audio.thedelimagazine.com/).

“I wanted to upgrade my audio interface and when I saw the competition I realised this was the perfect opportunity,” Jesse French says. “I’ve researched the company’s products and I’m very excited about winning a Titan.”

Internationally acclaimed company Prism Sound specialises in manufacturing high-quality professional digital audio equipment for the broadcast, film, music production and telecommunications sectors. The company’s product range includes the award-winning ADA-8XR precision 8-channel converter unit, which is regularly used for music and film soundtrack projects by clients such as EMI Abbey Road, BBC, Sony, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney.

Prism Sound’s family of audio interfaces includes Orpheus, Lyra (I and II), Atlas and Titan, which was launched to huge critical acclaim at the AES Convention in New York in October 2013. This multi-channel interface offers recording professionals ultimate quality analogue and digital I/O for Mac or Windows PC at sample rates up to 192kHz via a simple USB interface. Titan has eight analogue inputs, eight analogue outputs and S/PDIF and TOSLINK optical digital I/O ports. The optical ports can also be used for ADAT, giving Titan a maximum capability of 18 concurrent input and output channels plus dual stereo headphones. The unit also features Prism Sound’s new MDIO interface miniature expansion slot, which can be used to expand its connectivity, for example by adding a direct connection to Pro Tools|HDX systems.

For Jesse French, the opportunity to own a Prism Sound audio interface couldn’t come at a better time as he is soon to graduate from Hampshire College in Massachusetts where he has been studying music performance and production.

“I am currently working on my thesis, which is on alternative ways to distribute music online,” he explains. “I also play in a band – Young Tricksters (http://youngtricksters.bandcamp.com/) – and I plan on continuing to play out and record after a graduate.”

Prior to acquiring his Titan, Jesse was using a low end 8-channel interface and running Logic. The ability to record 16 channels means that he can now upgrade his recording set up.

“When I heard I’d won the competition, it took a while to sink in,” he says. “I didn’t really believe it until the unit arrived and now I’m really excited to own it and want to say a big thank you to everyone at Prism Sound and Delicious Audio who made this possible.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional CBT 70J-1 Column Loudspeaker and CBT 70JE-1 Extension Box Receive THX Approval

NORTHRIDGE, California – Making its world-class CBT column loudspeakers available for even more cinemas around the world, HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced that its CBT 70J-1 column loudspeaker and CBT 70JE-1 extension box are now THX approved. This enables exhibitors to include CBT 70J-1 loudspeakers in their THX-certified theaters.

“The CBT 70J-1 was developed for a variety of applications where high-quality sound and low visual profile are priorities and we have seen considerable adoption of this product in cinema environments,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Manager, Commercial Sound, JBL Professional. “Now, with THX approval, even more moviegoers can enjoy the sonic benefits of the CBT 70J-1!”

The CBT 70J-1 is a high-power, 2-way line array system consisting of 16 high-frequency drivers and four high-power low-frequency drivers, all in a fully co-axial column loudspeaker, featuring JBL’s patented CBT Constant Beamwidth beam control circuitry. The vertical coverage of the loudspeaker is asymmetrical, sending more sound toward the far seats of the auditorium than the near seats. When used as surround speakers, this technological breakthrough provides a much wider “sweet spot” where the audience hears a similar amount of both left and right surround speakers.

The 2-foot height of the column array controls the sound as well as a 2-foot tall horn would, so this asymmetrical coverage takes place throughout a wide bandwidth of the operational range of the speaker. In addition, the CBT 70J-1 covers a very wide horizontal angle of 150 degrees, allowing the even coverage of more seats. The small frontal profile makes it visually unobtrusive and the bracket allows for both vertical tilt and horizontal swivel aiming. The CBT 70JE-1 extension box can be added to the CBT 70J-1, doubling the low-frequency output capability and extending the pattern control of the system down to a lower frequency.

Major cinema exhibitors have installed the CBT70J-1 and the CBT70J-1 + CBTJE in the past several years as surround systems. These systems provide complete even coverage for each seat throughout the auditoriums at high SPL levels.

“We are very pleased that THX has certified the CBT70J-1 + JE,” said Charles Goodsell, Senior
Manager, Cinema, JBL Professional. “Movie theaters throughout the world are already employing these systems and we are glad they will now be able to be installed in THX-certified auditoriums.”
