Gotham ‘Conquers’ HBO Mini-Series With Yamaha QL/Rio Assist

Paul_Padilla Larry Provost Yamaha QL5

BUENA PARK, Calif.—HBO’s miniseries Show Me A Hero from The Wire co-creator David Simon, is based on a non-fiction book by Lisa Belkin. The six-hour mini stars Oscar Isaac as Nick Wasicsko, the youngest big-city mayor in the nation, who finds himself thrust into the center of a racial controversy when a federal court orders him to build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town, Yonkers, New York during 1988-1992. His attempt to do so tears the city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys his political future.

Gotham Sound and Communications in New York City was brought in to augment the audio production using a new Yamaha QL5 Series Digital Console and Rio1608-D input/output box. “We recreated many meetings in the City Council Chamber, during which there were large heckling crowds hurling insults at the Mayor and Council, states Frank Stettner, production sound mixer for the show. The Mayor and Council all had microphones in front of them that we wanted to make practical to cover their scripted dialog.”

The heckling crowd consists of five different scripted hecklers plus a yelling crowd. “My normal setup is an 8-channel Cooper CS 208 D mixer with its direct outs feeding an 8-input Dante device, but it would not provide me with enough inputs, says Stettner. The show’s workflow requires me to mix mono all audio sources in real time to Track 1 on a pair of Sound Devices 970 64-track digital recorders for syncing to picture for the Dailies. I record all stems used in that mix to isolated tracks for use in post-production.”

Stettner said the big council scenes got beyond both his number of inputs and his number of fingers. With 15 total speaking parts, it became necessary to expand the system so he contacted Peter Schneider at Gotham Sound who suggested the Yamaha QL and Rio as the best way to meet the scene’s needs. “It seamlessly integrated with my existing Dante based gear,” notes Stettner.

Paul Padilla, the on-location consultant from Gotham Sound, put together and installed the QL and set up the computer network that tied all parts together. “Using the Rio with the QL gave us a lot of flexibility, Padilla said. It allowed us to route audio to and from a remote room without the need to run additional cable. Interfacing the Yamaha QL with another Dante base rig made for a very pleasurable experience.”

Once Stettner rolled his cart into the room where the QL was setup after finishing some smaller scenes elsewhere in the building, the team connected the network, time code, word clock, and assigned the direct outs to the 970 inputs quickly via Dante; ready long before the lighting and camera setup was completed.

“Specifically, the workflow consists of the Yamaha Rio connected to the 12 practical, historically accurate, Shure SM57s. This was then brought via Cat5 to Gotham’s network hub, which connected my system and computer to the QL, Stettner continues. The mics were routed to the QL inputs and the 970 Iso tracks via Dante. Larry Provost, my colleague, then used the Yamaha QL to make a mono sub mix of the fixed mics following the script. I took this sub mix into my Cooper and added it to the mono Dailies mix along with the five radio mic sources I had on the scene’s protesters plus a boom mic for the crowd.”

“Augmenting the show’s main audio package with the Yamaha QL mixer has worked out rather nicely and seamlessly integrates, thanks to Dante,” notes Peter Schneider, Gotham Sound and Communications.

Stettner said the flexibility of using the Yamaha QL and Rio made what would have been a long, stressful and time-consuming cable mess in the old analog days, into a fast efficient setup. “Gotham and Yamaha make the good work we do even more possible.”

Show Me a Hero will air on HBO during 2015.

Arch Enemy Finds an Ally in HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6 Digital Console

Scraft_ArchEnemyHALMSTAD, Sweden – Bringing its unique brand of melodic death metal to its fans across the Atlantic Ocean, Swedish band Arch Enemy is currently touring North America with a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital console at front of house.

According to Hagen Weigel, Arch Enemy’s FOH engineer, Arch Enemy’s shows are dynamic and full of energy and theatrics. “Arch Enemy is a band that has beautiful melodies arranged around very intricate drumming, which is mixed with heavy shredding guitars and spiced up with brutal growling to form a nice mélange that feels like a kick in the face,” he said.

While “melodic death metal” might seem like an oxymoron, it is in fact a popular sub-genre that is nonetheless quite challenging to mix. “There are heavily distorted guitars that are also wide, open, and melodic which mix with very fast double kick drum playing,” Weigel noted. “Frequency differentiation is key to the mix—getting all of the instruments to sit and work around each other. I need to have clarity and separation and still be able to put [lead singer] Alissa’s voice out in front. I’m always looking for the result to be something that is beautiful and brutal at the same time.”

In his search for a digital console for this tour, Weigel placed a priority on reliability. “You can have the best-sounding, most feature-packed desk, but when it crashes in front of 30,000 people at a festival none of that matters,” he said. “What Soundcraft has done with the Vi6 is create an incredibly stable, ergonomic console that still has all of the features that I am looking for.”

Those features, in turn, are multiple. “In order to fulfill my vision of what the Arch Enemy sound should be I need really good dynamics—fast responding gates, compressors that are smooth and predictable in behavior, EQs that are responsive and accepts boosts well, and effects engines that are able to give me reverbs that range from ‘80s plate sounds to modern large reverbs,” Weigel added.

For all these reasons, Weigel chose the Vi6, which he noted has performed flawlessly to this point. “From metal to orchestral and symphonic music, Vi consoles are able to translate the vision you have for your mix in your head to the PA,” he noted. “It is incredibly reliable and consistent and sounds beautiful.”

Lastly, Weigel notes the Vi6’s intuitive user interface is icing on the cake. “The whole concept of having a dedicated touchscreen for every eight channels is great,” he said. “The fader bank, all angled really steep, gives a very nice feel of having a perfect overview and also puts every single parameter in reach, all the time. I don’t have to step through menus and sub-menus, it’s all right there. In my opinion the Vi interface is probably the fastest interface there is to work on.”

Event Enterprises Supplements NEXO M28 Arsenal, Adds Yamaha QL5 and DSRs

Event Grant Cambridge NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Event Enterprises is a full-service production company focusing on meeting their customers needs with utmost professionalism and the highest quality of service. With offices in Cincinnati, OH and Bellevue, KY, the company maintains a vast inventory of industry-standard, current event production equipment, coupled with an extensive dealer network and affiliations. The company recently took delivery of 12 NEXO STM M28 speakers to augment their existing NEXO box count, which has grown to 80.

“We were looking to increase our PA inventory to accommodate the demand of multiple festivals/stages/jobs happening simultaneously and were looking to dive into something with a little hotter output and farther throw than the NEXO GEO S12, states Grant Cambridge, Managing Director, Event Enterprises. The M28s could provide us with that need and seemed to make logistical sense for most of our applications. Financially, they also allowed us to make a comfortable initial investment into the STM franchise with the ability to “add on” and grow the rig with the additions of any B112s or M46s in the future. Our maiden voyage with the new boxes was a country show with headliners Dustin Lynch and Frankie Ballard, and out of the box, both front of house guest engineers enjoyed their day with them.”

Event upped their Yamaha DSR speaker inventory to 24, utilizing the DSRs for a variety of applications. “While the DSRs do see a lot of smaller “speaker on stick” gigs as well as corporate applications, we use them just as frequently for wedges as mains, Cambridge says. We do so many 5k, 10k, half/full marathon events where we line up the streets at the start and finish lines that the DSRs work perfectly for. We recently did a half marathon event earlier this month based around Veterans Day, and on a very cold Saturday morning we deployed DSRs down the start/finish line for 400 ft., and in 18 degree temperatures, they worked flawlessly for five hours in the elements.”

Cambridge said the Yamaha QL5 digital audio console was purchased primarily for the company’s rental inventory and in-house engineers to utilize in the field. “We have all taken a liking to Yamaha digital desks at our company and thought this was a nice “next step” for us, having gotten a lot of miles out of LS9s and M7s, notes Cambridge. Because of our familiarity with the Yamaha OS and internal workings within their digital desks and the direct functionality with the Dante network, we thought this would be a wise investment moving forward. The QL was put to use the minute it arrived, both by our own guys’ use well as fulfilling rider requests.”

Nitin Sawhney Transcends With Martin Audio MLA At Albert Hall

Nitin Sawhney_1

After working with RG Jones’ Martin Audio Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) at Glastonbury Festival, as well as the smaller MLA Compact at other events, David McEwan’s vision was to use it at the holy grail of London venues, the Royal Albert Hall.

As the long term recording and live engineer for Nitin Sawhney, the opportunity came when this British Indian musician, orchestral composer and producer announced his return to the famous London venue for performances from his forthcoming album Dystopian Dream and a selection of material from his first nine albums.

McEwan approached John Carroll, MD of RG Jones Sound Engineering, and to his great delight, the award-winning PA was made available within the production budget.

Rarely will MLA have had so many different sounds and voices pumped through it as Sawhney moved effortlessly through different musical genres. While he performed on guitars and piano, the ensemble featured many vocalists of different tongues as well as guests such as Björk percussionist and hang player, Manu Delago, and Soumik Datta on the 19-stringed sarod. The band also included two cellists, a tabla player and drummer, and the four singers lined up across the stage included the impressive flutist, Ashwin Srinivasan.

Fellow sound engineer Steve Watson, who tragically died last year, had first introduced David McEwan to RG Jones and the MLA. “I built up a good relationship over the years and had been badgering them to let me have MLA for the Royal Albert Hall. I wondered what it would sound like after using it at Glastonbury, and it sounded amazing. It produced great imaging—there was a real presence about the vocals wherever you stood—and that’s an important part of the show. In terms of PA’s, it’s clearly the next step up.”

The design consisted of 16 x MLA elements per side with nine W8LM Mini (and two W8LMD Downfills) per side and further W8LM/W8LMD used judiciously as front and infills. Eight Martin Audio WLX subs were recessed under the stage in a splayed broadside cardioid array to create the required curve.

McEwan’s system tech was the experienced Marty Beath, who a week previously had helped optimize the MLA system deployed for the Invictus Games Closing Concert.

As production/soundcheck time at the Royal Albert Hall was compromised, Beath was able to draw on existing presets, previously used by MLA tech Mark Edwards, enabling them to notch out sound spillage at the stage and up to the top tribune, where there was no audience present.

Nitin Sawhney_2

Supporting the production was RG Jones’ Jack Bowcher, who has worked many times with McEwan, and was in charge of the stage. He, too, knew the rig would be rock solid.

“MLA again produced amazing clarity, particularly at front of house, which was impressive considering the nature of the event. The detail you could hear in the vocals was just unbelievable.”

But the last word came from David McEwan. “This was one of my favourite experiences; everyone seemed delighted with the sound and I will want to use MLA wherever I can.”
