Emmy Award-Winning Studio Works Mouseless, Keyboardless with Yamaha NUAGE

Jereco Studios and Yamaha NUAGE

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Jereco Studios is located in Bozeman, Montana, a small town located outside of Yellowstone National Park, and home to a unique, dense film and music community. The four-time Emmy® award-winning, commercial sound recording studio offers sync-to-film ADR and voice-over recordings with remote link up via ISDN or SourceConnect. Jereco is equipped for 5.1 and 7.1 Digital Surround Sound, Dolby E, DTS, and many other formats. In addition, the studio provides a full line of quality live sound reinforcement services and equipment rental packages.

Jeremiah Slovarp, producer/engineer and President of Jereco Studios, has been working up until now on a Yamaha 02R96v2. In early 2013, he began searching for a new, modern work surface. “Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems had posted its first NUAGE photos and articles on their web site, and I knew this system was what I was looking for,” states Slovarp. I admit, I miss the old console, but am moving ahead with the new Yamaha NUAGE. The 02R96 still works after almost 14 years, which is a real testament to Yamaha’s design and build quality.”

“In the fall of 2013, the Club Cubase newsletter announced NUAGE would be on display with technical and sales team members from Yamaha present at Poll Sound in Salt Lake, Utah, Slovarp says. It was too late for me to book a flight, so I drove the seven hours from Bozeman to Salt Lake the night before so I could be the first one at Poll Sound the following morning. I was met on demo day by the Poll Sound staff and Yamaha’s Chris Hinson and Randy Weitzel. Because I was early that morning, I had the console to myself for a good two hours while Chris and the Poll Sound staff took turns showing me around and answering questions.”

JeremiahMixingNuage

Before he left Montana, Slovarp packed up a few projects to use as workflow samples on the demo NUAGE at Poll Sound. “I think this was a great experiment and gave me the opportunity to work on the console with my own work and workflow preferences. I was particularly impressed that Chris was taking notes on my hiccups and recommendations, and passed those notes on to the NUAGE development team, some of which have shown up in the latest software updates. The integration of my existing workflow into a new platform that felt so much like my natural workspace in Nuendo really was seamless. The deep integration and control of the DAW on the console is truly complete and unique.”

Slovarp has been using Nuendo 2 since 2002, keeping up with every revision and update. He said the most important thing he appreciates about NUAGE is that it has enabled him to put down the keyboard and mouse. “I feel like I can get back to mixing, pushing faders, turning knobs, and just working on a creative console. After an eight or ten hour day, my hands would be in pain from all the manual movements I had to make being dependent on mouse editing and clicking. With the advent of all the cool and amazing new digital DAW based mixing tools and equipment, I think the industry, in general, has regressed from the art of mixing and working with consoles and large format hardware. But with NUAGE, I appreciate the deliberate move Yamaha has made to enable engineers to get back to mixing and editing as an art form.”

Linear to Offer Exclusive Preview of Z-Wave Enabled Light Bulb and Other Home Control Products at CES Unveiled

The largest manufacturer of Z-Wave enabled products will highlight its growing suite of home control solutions and offer a sneak peek of the Z-Wave Dimmable LED Light Bulb, available in early 2015.

New York, NY – November 11, 2014 – Linear LLC, a Nortek company (NASDAQ: NTK) and a leader in the security and home control markets, will show a preview of its newest Z-Wave product, the Z-Wave Dimmable LED Light Bulb at CES Unveiled New York. The instant-on, screw-in bulb provides soft-white illumination equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent bulb and provides one of the simplest and most affordable intelligent lighting solutions available, from the world’s largest manufacturer of Z-Wave products – according to the Z-Wave Alliance.

The new smart bulb is remotely controllable from any Z-Wave hub or controller, consumes only nine watts of energy, and has an estimated lifespan of 25,000 hours. The soft white LED light bulb is dimmable to 100 levels and offers a practical lighting solution for DIY and professional installers who want to bring intelligent lighting anywhere a light socket exists. Just like with other Z-Wave lighting solutions, Linear LED smart bulb users can program lifestyle scenes and trigger the bulb on or off when other events or associated devices are activated. This new product also acts as a repeater to strengthen the Z-Wave mesh network.

“Our Z-Wave Dimmable LED Bulb clears a major roadblock for lighting control adoption, the need to install high voltage switches,” said Linear senior vice president of product and market development, Duane Paulson. “The smart bulb is the easiest Z-Wave lighting control solution to install, operate and manage, it has the smoothest dimming feature on the market today, and it offers practical applications in nearly every room in a home.”

In addition to the smart bulb, Linear manufactures a wide array of other Z-Wave enabled home control products, including: three-way and regular light switches, thermostats, doorbells, key fobs, door/window contacts, dimmer modules and wall outlets; all of which will be on display at CES Unveiled. Linear will also showcase its UL-certified Z-Wave Garage Door Operator Remote Controller, which has been widely adopted through popular platforms such as Lowe’s Iris, Nexia, Staples Connect and more.

Paulson continued, “With our full line of security, access control and lighting solutions, customers can now build a fully-integrated home control system using Linear products.”

Linear’s 2GIG home control platform serves the needs of more homeowners than any other installed home control platform in the world. Linear and their parent Nortek have global reach, which includes distribution and market share in every continent across a range of channels, supported by smart-tech development and manufacturing centers across Asia, North America and Europe. Linear will continue to develop innovation in integrated systems and IoT connected products, state-of-the-art product ID design and high volume manufacturing.

RMB Audio Eliminates Reflections With MLA Compact

NC State Fair 2014_3

Raleigh, NC––Tasked with providing audio for 11 concerts in a row at Dorton Arena featuring artists ranging from Vanilla Ice to comedy artist James Gregory, country stalwart Trace Adkins, Gospel luminary Tamela Mann and Christian Rock’s Newsboys, RMB Audio already faced a daunting assignment at this year’s NC State Fair.

Factor in the arena’s demanding acoustic environment, and the task became even more challenging. As RMB’s Systems Engineer Roger Dennis drily points out, “It’s got everything you want; concrete, glass, steel, and hard wooden seats. Plus the arena’s an oval, so it’s reflections galore.”

Fortunately, the RMB Audio team came equipped with a Martin Audio MLA Compact system to better control the sound in the hall and eliminate reflections. “The MLA Compact system allowed us to stop the coverage just before it hits the glass in the rear and on the sides of the room,” Roger specifies. “The system’s output control is really precise. It made our job a lot easier while improving the sound quality for all of the acts and the audience.”

NC State Fair 2014_1

The actual system consisted of a main hang with 12 MLA Compact enclosures per side, a side hang with 8 MLA Compacts per side, and 6 Martin Audio W8LMD (downfill) as lip fill. Ample low end was provided by 12 DSX subs ground-stacked in two rows of 6 standing on end with the two outer enclosures slightly angled out.

Asked about the MLA Compact’s other attributes, Roger points out the enclosure’s lighter weight and wider dispersion, but the main advantage is still its output control capability.

“It used to be when you had someone speaking into a microphone in the arena, the reflections would kill all speech intelligibility. With MLA, that’s not a problem. When we first brought it into Dorton three years ago it was quite a shock. Now that we’ve switched to MLA’s for outfill to kill the reflections coming off the glass, the clarity for spoken word has continued to improve dramatically.

“Everyone was pleased with the system, adds Dennis, “especially Newsboys FOH Engineer John O’Neal who was very impressed with what we could do with the rig because he’s been in Dorton before with an older system. One of his last comments to me during this show was ‘everything from 300Hz and above is completely clear. We could hear everything.’ John and I walked the entire venue during the soundcheck as did several engineers who put their head right next to the glass, and they said it sounded exactly the same as it did down at the mix position.

“That’s one of the key things the MLA does that other systems don’t. It optimizes for the audience, not the room. The quality of the coverage is consistent from the front of the stage all the way to the back of the arena.”

NC State Fair 2014_4

Summing up, Roger adds, “We’re going to UNC Memorial Hall on the campus of University of North Carolina, a 1600 seat proscenium theater with a really prominent balcony face that is a problem in terms of generating reflections back onto the stage. The MLA Compact allows us to steer around that balcony; we can just slice that section out of the vertical coverage. We’ve been able to make it so accurate that you can literally stand up out of a seat and you’re out of the coverage. It’s really amazing.”

7. 50 Channel Transcoding IP Video Playout Server with Scheduling — IP Grooming Server™ 50ch 1TB
8. SDI/HD-SDI to IP Live Streaming Appliance — MultiStreamer DIG/IP™

1. Revamped Media Server — Atlas Media Server
Designed for IPTV operators, telcos, mobile operators, broadcasters, and Over The Top (OTT) video providers, the powerful Atlas Media Server provides grooming and VOD (video on demand) options in three different sizes.

The system ingests MPEG-2, H.264, and/or H.265/HEVC live streams over IP, then “grooms” the streams by adding wrappers such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, or RTMP, plus subtitles for closed captions or multiple languages. It outputs the live streams and simultaneously stores the streams as VOD files.

2. UDP Video Packet Recovery Technology — Winner of the Society of Broadcast Engineers Technology Award for 2014 — DOZERbox II IP IP
DVEO’s patent pending “DOZER” technology enables reliable high quality video delivery over public internet or so-so private lines. The DOZERbox II IP IP is a compact end-to-end Error Correcting Router for smoothing UDP traffic over the public internet, with built-in packet recovery algorithms for alleviation of packet loss and resultant video freezes. It does not add jitter or noise, and does not increase bandwidth consumption like FEC. It is perfect for delivering critical video over congested public backbones.

The technology is also available as a software license — the Media Dozer: LIC™, or in a one RU system — the DOZER Racks IP IP™. The DOZERbox II IP IP is the winner of the prestigious Society of Broadcast Engineers Technology Award for 2014.

3. Mobile Cellular Modem Encoder for H.264 HD Streaming from HD-SDI Cameras — Mobile Backpack: H.264/HD-SDI Kit
The Mobile Backpack: H.264/HD-SDI Kit is a lightweight (about 8.6 lbs./3.9 kg.) H.264 backpack encoder for streaming HD-SDI, SDI, or HDMI video via live wireless video and data transmission, using bonded 3G and 4G mobile network connections. It bundles up to eight mobile network channels from one or more operators into a single broadband channel.

Streaming media production professionals will use this system for electronic news gathering and streaming live video from events. The system ships with a matching decoder and a custom made backpack.

4. 120 Channel Adaptive Optimized Transcoder for OTT and Multi Screen Services –Brutus V IP/IP: TELCO
The enterprise class Brutus IV IP/IP: TELCO is a real time Adaptive Optimized Transcoder with 48 Cores — ideal for simple transcoding or grooming at headends for OTT or Multiscreen services. It transcodes up to 120 SD streams, or 40 720p HD streams, or 30 1080i/p HD streams from MPEG-2 to H.264 or vice-versa. The system is suitable for IPTV, OTT, mobile TV, broadcast, and Telco TV, or as a transcoder/reformatter for RTSP IP Cameras. The Brutus supports Flash, HLS, RTMP, HTTP, Smooth, and Live streaming and works well with Wowza®, Adobe® Flash® and RealNetworks® Servers.

5. IP to SDI/HD-SDI Video and Audio Decoder — D-Streamer IP/DIG
The D-Streamer IP/DIG is a real time H.264 or MPEG-2 decoder that receives IP transport streams and decodes them to SDI or HD-SDI, or optional HDMI. Streaming media content providers use DVEO’s MultiStreamer DIG/IP to encode SDI or HD-SDI to H.264 IP, then decode the IP streams with the D-Streamer IP/DIG. The Linux® based system is available in three versions — a single input channel, two input channels, or 1-8 input channels. It is perfect for receiving and professionally decoding “poor” video from IP cameras, remote sites, content delivery networks (CDNs), or IPTV compatible appliances or players. The system works with Teradek, Nanocaster, Minicaster, Axis IP Cameras, and other streaming appliances.

6. Ad Inserter for Mobile Multi Screen Video Delivery and for OTT — Ad Serter IP/ASI/SDI
The Ad Serter IP/ASI/SDI is a broadcast quality playout server with Ad and EAS (Emergency Alert System) capabilities. It inserts or overlays video clips, graphical ads, logos, scrolling text, and RSS news feeds — anywhere on live or stored video content, on a schedule, or via signaling like SCTE 35 signals from EAS generators. Graphics, logos, and text can be static, blinking, or rotating.

The system adds messages to one to four IPTV SD channels, or to one to four targeted SD cable or on-air channels or sub channels. (An option for 1 HD and 3 SD channels is available.) Three versions are available: DVB-ASI, IP, or SDI.

7. 50 Channel Transcoding IP Video Playout Server with Scheduling — IP Grooming Server 50ch 1TB
The IP Grooming Server 50ch 1TB is a file playout server for scheduled continuous streaming. It stores various file types, then “grooms” them by transcoding the streams to H.264 and/or scaling the video to different resolutions. It also adds various “wrappers” such as HLS, RTMP, etc.

With the IP Grooming Server, users can create their own 50 “streaming” web channels with 50 different movies or content, playing on a preset schedule. The Linux® based system is a great video hosting playout server for ISPs, corporate websites, schools, hotels, and digital signage.

8. SDI/HD-SDI to IP Live Streaming Appliance — MultiStreamer DIG/IP
The latest version of DVEO’s real time MultiStreamer DIG/IP live streaming webcasting encoder receives one, two, or four SDI or HD-SDI inputs (from cameras, editing systems, or video servers) and multiple IP inputs. It creates multiple simultaneous high, medium, and low bitrate IP streams and sends them to iPads, iPhones, content delivery networks (CDNs), and remote video capture devices. Each stream can have several proxies with different “wrappers” such as HLS, RTMP, etc. The broadcast quality system features schedulable input — it can receive input at a specified date and time — and ships with one terabyte of local storage.

The MultiStreamer is also available with other video input formats — 8VSB, HDMI, Analog, DVB-ASI, HDMI, DVB-S+S2, DVB-T+T2, QAM, ISDB-T, or DVB-C.

“We are excited to be showing our leading edge products at Streaming Media West,” said Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. “Our unique streaming systems feature lots of options to meet the needs of our customers. And as always, we are very open to customizing our products.”
