HARMAN’s AKG PW45 Wireless System Band “M” Opens Frequencies To European Markets With Changes Slated For Mobile Internet Access Regulations

FRANKFURT, Germany – During Pro Light and Sound 2013, HARMAN’s AKG proudly introduces the latest version of its WMS45 wireless system with revised operating frequencies for the European market. WMS45 Band 10 operates on frequencies between 823 and 832 MHz known as the ‘duplex gap.’ This frequency range lies between the areas that will be used for upcoming high-speed Internet service for mobile devices, and will enable future proof, interference-free operation.

“In many European countries the frequency range between 823 and 832 MHz will be exclusively reserved for wireless microphones and In-ear monitoring – in Germany the range can even be used for free,” said Thomas Umbauer, product marketing manager – PPA, AKG. “Band M operates with up to 6 channels simultaneously and compatible frequencies are stored in presets.”

Designed for total ease of use, the WMS45 is ideal for basic applications including hotels, conference centers, houses of worship, schools, universities and other facilities. It’s also perfect for musicians and bands, especially those who will be travelling in different countries throughout Europe.

Perception wireless transmitters HT45 and PT45 are powered using a just one single alkaline, lithium or Ni-MH rechargeable battery, providing up to 12 hours of use with lithium batteries.

The PW45 Systems are available in a variety of configurations for live music, instrumental, sports and presentation use including handheld, headworn and lavalier mic options. Packages include the Vocal sets with a dynamic cardioids capsule, the Instrumental set, with the PT45 and an included guitar cable, the PW45 Sports set with C544 and the PW45 Presentation set with CK99.

HARMAN’s AKG Introduces Revamped Digital Automatic Microphone Mixers – DMM6 and DMM12

FRANKFURT, Germany – Adding to its family of microphone mixers, AKG proudly introduces its new line of digital automatic microphone mixers – DMM6 and DMM12. With an intuitive user interface, numerous DSP functions and high signal to noise ratio (S/N), the DMM series provides users with the highest quality in automatic mixing technology.

DMM12 offers 12 inputs, while easily adjusting the mic to line level. Its four line outputs (2x stereo) are individually assignable for each input. The stereo record outputs are individually assignable, while the headphone out port allows users to listen to each input and output individually.

DMM6 offers six inputs and two line outputs at 1x stereo.

When in use, all inputs are active, but attenuated to a level that equals the level of one “active microphone.” If two or more inputs receive relevant input signals, their amplification is increased to a level, which allows overall output to equal one “active microphone,” resulting in an absolute feedback-stable system.

Working to deter noise pickup, the DMM series senses numerous sonic activities to monitor and diminish unwanted sound. If a signal is picked up over a long period of time, the mixers understand that it may be an air conditioning unit or other unavoidable noise. When a large number of microphones pick up the same signal and all mics are active, the DMM system will recognize applause and not react. When two microphones are receiving the same signal, the mic with the slightly higher level gets priority, while the other one is attenuated.

“AKG understands the needs of the live sound professional and the updates to our line of rackable mixers underscores our goal of providing high-quality, reliable sound in all performance spaces,” stated Thomas Giczy, Business development Manager, Installed Sound, AKG. “DMM6 and DMM12 embody the technological advancements AKG delivered with its original analog 8-channel auto mixer, AS8 and its digital predecessors DMM4/2/4. DMM12 and 6 will be a tactical addition to any installed sound system to ensure proper sound.”

HARMAN’s AKG B48 L Battery Power Supply Offers More Than 20 Hours Of Condenser Mic Performance

FRANKFURT, Germany – Evolving its legendary list of recording and live sound equipment, HARMAN’s AKG launches the successor of its B18 condenser microphone battery power supply with the introduction of the B48 L. With its very low noise level, a frequency response of 20Hz – 24Hz and an inverse polarity protection feature against incorrect battery insertion, the B48 L Battery Power Supply provides users with more than 20 hours of use on only two AA batteries.

When phantom power for a condenser is unavailable from a mixer, the B48 L phantom power supplies microphones with 48V and meets the P48 phantom power standard. Additionally, B48 L’s mini-XLR audio output and included mini-XLR to mini-XLR connection cable supports a direct connection of condenser microphones to all AKG bodypack transmitters. A low battery LED light illuminates if phantom power drops below 40V.

“We’ve designed B48 L to replace our original B18, which required two expensive 9V batteries and didn’t support P48 standards,” stated Wolfgang Fritz, Product Marketing Manager – Tour Sound, AKG. “Many of our more advanced microphones, including the C414 do not allow for voltage lower than the P48 standard. Now, we can be sure to accommodate all users so their AKG microphones have proper power and provide the quality and reliability we strive to offer professionals around the world.”

Digital Rapids Expands Award-Winning StreamZ Live Encoder Family with Trio of Powerful New Models

New StreamZ Live 4000EX, 6000EX and 8000EX target live and linear multiscreen, broadcast and converged applications

April 10, 2013 — NAB Show, Las Vegas, Booth SL5624: Digital Rapids – the trusted provider of innovative media transformation and workflow solutions for bringing video to wider audiences — is unveiling powerful new models in the company’s award-winning StreamZ Live family of live encoders. Building on the superior multi-format flexibility, quality and reliability of the StreamZ Live series, the new additions include the StreamZ Live 4000EX for premium multiscreen applications; the StreamZ Live 6000EX for dedicated broadcast applications; and the StreamZ Live 8000EX for converged broadcast and multiscreen deployments.

The new StreamZ Live 4000EX multiscreen encoder combines the proven benefits of existing StreamZ Live models with increased fault-tolerant redundancy and expanded control capabilities for premium live and linear multiscreen encoding applications from IPTV and over-the-top (OTT) services to high-profile and mission-critical live streaming deployments. The StreamZ Live 4000EX features rich adaptive streaming format support for providing viewers with high-quality experiences on the broadest range of devices, from ‘smart TVs’ and desktop computers to tablets, game consoles and mobile phones.

Leveraging the flexible software architecture of the Kayak technology platform, the StreamZ Live 4000EX can be easily upgraded to support new features, formats and technologies as they emerge. Streams can be output in multiple formats simultaneously, with independent management of each output for exceptional control. Output profiles can be started, stopped and reconfigured separately without interrupting other concurrent outputs — even those from the same input.

The StreamZ Live 4000EX can be managed and controlled through an intuitive web interface, optional touchscreen front-panel controls or through a new version of the scalable Digital Rapids Broadcast Manager multi-encoder management software for multi-channel automation, scheduling, monitoring and failover. Its robust new hardware platform bolsters fault tolerance with features including redundant inputs and outputs, multiple network interfaces and redundant, hot-swappable power supplies.

Existing StreamZ Live models also continue to be available for professional live streaming and multiscreen applications not requiring the advanced redundancy and control capabilities of the 4000EX.

Convergence without Compromise

Simplifying the convergence of core television and multi-platform streaming operations now occurring within media enterprises, the StreamZ Live 8000EX integrated broadcast/multiscreen encoder combines all of the capabilities of the StreamZ Live 4000EX with robust features for the unique demands of broadcast, cable, telco and satellite television operations. Reducing complexity and costs, the StreamZ Live 8000EX features simultaneous encoding for broadcast television (H.264 or MPEG-2) and adaptive bit rate streaming for multiscreen distribution — all in a single 1RU encoder.

The new StreamZ Live 6000EX delivers the same robust, premium-quality broadcast encoding capabilities as its sibling 8000EX in a tailored configuration for dedicated broadcast, cable and satellite television applications.

All three new models offer a broad range of configuration options to match customer and project requirements. Units are available in single, dual and quad-channel input densities with input options including SDI, IP and ASI interfaces. The StreamZ Live 4000EX features IP outputs, while IP and ASI output options are available for the StreamZ Live 6000EX and 8000EX. The units are also easily field-upgradeable with expansion options including single-channel to dual-channel, SD-only to HD and more.

“The introduction of the StreamZ Live 4000EX, 6000EX and 8000EX rounds out our comprehensive range of high-quality live encoders with robust, application-tailored solutions for multiscreen, broadcast and combined deployments,” said Tony Huang, Senior Product Manager, Broadcast and Live at Digital Rapids. “The expanded resilience, redundancy and control capabilities of the new models reflect the pivotal role that live and linear multiscreen delivery now play in media organizations’ business strategies, while the StreamZ Live 8000EX directly addresses and simplifies the convergence of their multi-platform streaming initiatives into their core television operations.”

New FOR-A MXF Video Clip Servers Ideal for File-Based Ingest, Playout Applications

Cypress, CA - FOR-A Corporation of America, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, has announced two new compact MXF clip servers, the MBP-120SX and MBP-125SX, for ingest, playback, and playout applications. Ideal for file-based production workflows, the new 1 RU servers are being demonstrated at the 2013 NAB Show (C5116), which runs April 8-11 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

For ingest, the MBPs can capture files from an external XDCAM drive or network drive, convert HD/SD-SDI signals to MXF files in real time, and support up to eight channels of embedded audio (the MBP-125SX also supports for eight-channel AES audio). Multiple MBPs can also be components of a user-constructed playout system that does not require a dedicated playout server. Material can be stored on a shared NAS unit, then specified MXF files can be transferred over the network to multiple MBPs. Output from the MBPs follows the automatic program playout system. MBPs can also be combined with another video server for more advanced configurations. Clips can be added over the network, even during video recording or playback, for seamless operation.

“With built-in flash memory, the new MBP-120SX and MBP-125SX create a very stable ingest or playout environment,” said Pedro Silvestre, Sales Director, FOR-A Corporation of America. “These are very versatile servers that can be deployed in a variety of applications.”

In conjunction with FOR-A’s MediaConcierge media management system, an MBP can be incorporated into a user-constructed clip server application, providing database-driven management of video clips and playout programs. Each MBP ships with control software for standalone operation, and registered clips are instantly recognizable by thumbnail display in the control software. Optional software offers remote control of the system over the network and manages list-based clip playout.

The MBP-120SX features one HD/SD-SDI input and output, while the MBP-125SX has four outputs, two of which support time code display. DTS And Fairlight Collaborate To Deliver The Industry’s First Next-Generation 3D Audio Creation Platform To Support MDA

Sydney, Australia – DTS, Inc. (Nasdaq: DTSI), a pioneer in next generation ultra high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies, and Fairlight, a leader in audio and video post production solutions, today collaboratively announced the release of Fairlight’s new 3DAW, a 3D audio production platform with native MDA mixing and format support. Answering the industry’s demand for an open next-generation audio format, DTS worked with experts in the content creation community to create the MDA specification.

In January of this year, DTS publicly announced its intent to provide MDA to the industry as an open object-based audio authoring format, as the industry looks to avoid a format war for next-gen content creation and cinema delivery. Today, the standardization work continues to formalize the specification, while industry leaders such as Fairlight jump ahead of the curve by working with DTS to integrate MDA into their new 3DAW solution. The first of its kind, Fairlight’s 3DAW enables sound designers to truly mix object-based audio in unrestricted 3D space, monitor on any configuration, and output in DTS’ proposed future specification – MDA. Additionally, Fairlight’s 3DAW will feature the ability to mix soundtracks for DTS Neo:X, a channel-based audio solution designed to support up to an 11.1 speaker system.

“We are delighted to be working with DTS to equip our all new 3DAW production station with MDA authoring capability,” said Tino Fibaek, CTO at Fairlight. “Together, we can now offer studios a highly anticipated alternative to the closed proprietary object-based audio formats being proposed to date.”
The MDA specification is currently being proposed to international standardization committees as an alternative to todays closed proprietary solutions. MDA allows every sound element of a soundtrack to be mapped in 3D space, storing all of the spatial and behavioral information of each sound element as metadata. Mixing audio with MDA as opposed to other surround sound platforms allows a soundtrack to maintain the exact spatial characteristics of the audio as intended by the mixer. With overwhelming interest from the entertainment industry, MDA has already garnered support from major studios and networks, while content tool providers have begun developing new authoring solutions for the MDA format.

The new Fairlight 3DAW is available to the industry as a turnkey solution, based on Fairlight’s powerful Crystal Core Media processor and innovative software. It offers audio engineers with a ready-to-go, creative tool to design sound in both object-based or channel 3D mixing methods. The system provides on-screen 3D panning via a plugin, as well as extensive monitoring functions. 3DAW is able to generate a diverse range of mixes ranging from stereo, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1+2, DTS Neo:X™, as well as an object-based mix (MDA). A separate tablet control application allows for easy previewing and demonstration of audio output to verify and display the results of the creative process.

“We are extremely excited to be working with Fairlight on enabling their all new 3DAW workstations with MDA format support,” said Fred Kitson, CTO at DTS. “The industry has been clamoring for an open-platform for the creation of object-based audio to end the format wars, and MDA was created specifically to address this.”
