TDC provides core video expertise for largest-ever light festival Vivid Sydney

TDC – The Technical Direction Company is proud to be deploying the full range of its professional and technical expertise in providing core technology and services to Destination NSW for the sixth annual Vivid Sydney festival running from 23 May to 9 June.

Anthony Bastic, Vivid Light Festival Director said: “Vivid Sydney is a unique celebration of light, music and ideas that will see the centre of New South Wales’ vibrant capital transformed by a series of state-of-the-art visual and creative art installations. There are two components to Vivid Light. The first is the Light Walk, which is the public interface of Vivid Sydney. This includes numerous light installations by artists. Secondly, also forming part of the Light Walk, are projections onto some of Sydney’s most iconic buildings including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House. We are thrilled to work with TDC in bringing the artists’ vision to light.”

“This is our third year of working with Destination NSW on Vivid Sydney, providing a huge range of technologies including 3D media servers, 3D mapping, video projection equipment, projection tower infrastructure and sound installations, not to mention our highly skilled crews to manage the technology,” comments Kain Jones, Special Projects Manager at TDC. “We have used our experience of working on Vivid Sydney for the last three years to apply the insights with have learned to how to adapt and continue to make sure that the elements TDC is involved in are amazing.

“As Vivid Sydney grows, new buildings and locations are added, so initially we spend considerable time analysing which technology is best-aligned to meet the artists’ vision. We get involved from the outset in installation design, mapping the buildings to enable the designers to create content specific to the outline of those buildings. We then work on optimal locations for projector placement, media server selection, lens selection and the number of projectors required to meet specific brightness (lux) output for each installation.”

“Vivid Sydney is a great challenge for our company, the scale of this event is enormous in regard to projection technology required to bring it all together,” comments Michael Hassett, TDC’s Managing Director. “This year over 50 Barco projectors will be deployed in total, ranging from the brightest projector in the world, the HDQ-2K40 (40,000 lumens brightness) along with Barco HDF-W26 (22,000 lumens brightness) and FLM-R22+ (22,000 lumens brightness) projectors. World firsts from TDC

This year’s Vivid Sydney programme includes a number of significant technological and creative firsts.

Dichroic Dimensions

Kain Jones points to one aspect of a unique interactive installation at the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), where artist-in-residence Ross Manning has collaborated with multidisciplinary artistic collective, The Digital Shamans to give visitors the chance to projection-map the façade of the building using only their voice.

“There’ll be two microphones on a slightly raised platform. As the audience uses their voice to interact with the installation, various hidden layers of visuals and soundscapes will be revealed based on pitch,” explains Michael K Chin at The Digital Shamans. “TDC are an amazing company with the technical know how and equipment to cope with the subtleties in our work. Especially with the HD video taken of dichroic filters producing subtle gradients in tones and colour shifts, strong contrast and vivid colour. It’s been a pleasure working with TDC for the first time. They are very professional and their experience with past Vivid Sydney festivals has been invaluable.”

Gamma World

Bringing together the worlds of live performance, interaction and visual art onto the original façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art, ‘Gamma World’ combines isometric designs, old school gaming, pop up 3D books and forced perspective using 3D and animation tricks that powerfully takes the viewers on a journey through changing worlds.

Stella Carmody, Producer at Spinifex Group Sydney says: “What makes this projection so special this year is that we were able to combine our love of story-telling with the wonderfully inspiring artwork of Jess Johnson to create an abstract, engaging and playful piece of moving art on this iconic building. Hardware and projection mapping was undertaken by our good friends, large-scale projection experts, TDC.”

Urban Tree Project

If you ever find yourself wondering what grew in the CBD before monuments of glass and steel, Urban Tree Project in Vivid Sydney 2014 will show you. The CTA building in Martin Place will grow out of the ground to become a magnificent living tree within the surrounding urban environment to celebrate and reflect on Sydney’s original green landscape. Design and animation company, Ample Projects turned to TDC to provide the projection solution.

“This project had unique technical challenges, so the natural choice for us was TDC. Ample designed a complex 3D mapping solution in collaboration with the TDC team. They were highly professional, providing projection design solutions for a cylindrical architecture screen with extreme focal planes. We look forward to working with them again soon,” says Ample Creative Director, Nicholas Tory.

“The shape of the structure was great to work on. We decided that the best solution was to map the projection to the curves of the building using Coolux Pandoras Box Media Servers,” comments Pete Lynn, TDC’s Media Server Specialist. “We’re very happy with the results.”

The projections for the Urban Tree Project are synchronised with a stunning laser lighting show as is the case with TDC’s projections for the Vivid Aquatique Water Theatre installation.

Spirit of Patyegarang

Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading Indigenous performing arts organisation celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone the company presents its new production at the Sydney Opera House Patyegarang until 5 July and participates for the first time in Vivid Sydney with The spirit of Patyegarang. Projected onto the southern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The spirit of Patyegarang is a video installation marking the first Indigenous contribution to the Vivid Light Walk.

Bangarra’s Executive Director, Philipe Magid, said: “TDC is providing equipment and video expertise enabling our company to project a stunning work of art on to a section of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Through a fusion of dance movements and music soundscape and thanks to video projections supported by TDC, the important story of Patyegarang will awake and inspire with the sensations and emotions of ‘first contact’”.

Play Me

In a poetic explosion of colour, light and sound, ‘Play Me’ will transform the façade of Customs House into a series of massive ‘musical sculptures’ that are individually selected and manipulated by the audience.

“Each of these ‘sculptures’ depicts a family of musical instruments which the audience can ‘play’ in real-time using a touch screen located on a platform in front of Customs House bringing it to life in glorious torrents of ever-changing colour, light form and sound,” says Sergio Carrubba, director and projection designer at Danny Rose, the design team for this project. “We’ve worked with TDC before on the ‘Move Your Building’ exhibit at Vivid Sydney 2013. In all cases, TDC offers exceptional support during planning phases, onsite technical support and the very best in projection equipment to assist with our designs which will all be brought to life at Vivid Sydney.”

Ignatius Jones, Creative Director, Vivid Sydney, comments: “Vivid Sydney is a strange beast: on the one hand it is a major government initiative designed to drive visitation and tourist expenditure during the year’s lowest season, and on the other a celebration of the fusion of Art and Technology that is changing our world forever and for the better. As Creative Director I must split my focus between the exacting contractual and economic demands of government, and the necessity to provide cutting-edge technical solutions to all the issues of larges-scale – or should I say vast-scale – public entertainment.

Prism Sound Launches ‘Bitesize’ Webinars

The enormous success of Prism Sound’s Audio Design Workshop LIVE event at the 51st AES Conference in Helsinki has inspired the company to launch a new, free webinar series – Audio Design Workshop: Bitesize.

The Bitesize series delves deeper into the audio engineering and measurement topics already discussed in Prism Sound’s popular Wednesday Webinars series. Dataton’s seamless solution helps BP convey a sustainable image

WATCHOUT at the heart of immersive London 2012 cyclorama

The use of cutting-edge multimedia technology to entertain consumers while reinforcing brand values is gaining momentum globally, and a shining example using Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image display and presentation software platform was to be found at BP’s ‘Fuelling The Future’ showcase during the London 2012 Olympics.

In a 360-degree environment designed by KBW Design, systems integrator DJ Willrich (DJW) designed and installed the AV system according to guidelines laid down by LOCOG, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. DJW used eight Panasonic projectors to create a cyclorama with seamless edge-blending courtesy of Dataton WATCHOUT. WATCHOUT was supplied by Dataton Premium Partner, Mirage Associates.

With a timeline synchronised to a Medialon show-control system, the audience was surrounded by a shifting audio-visual landscape that brought to life BP’s key brand messaging as an Olympic sponsor – that the company is discovering and recovering energy efficiently, responsibly and safely from some of the world’s most hostile environments.

David Willrich at DJW comments: “We have used WATCHOUT many times and had no hesitation in specifying it for this project. The system’s ability to blend, warp and geometrically correct multiple video images, synchronise them to a multimedia show, and put the whole thing inside a package that can be controlled on-site by non-technical staff, is second to none.”

Ultimate in Presentation Switching Environments

Live from Daryl’s House to Yours with StudioLive

New York State, October 2012…  It’s not easy scoring a hit in today’s busy media landscape. But that’s exactly what singer-songwriter Daryl Hall has done with Live from Daryl’s House, the Webcast-turned-syndicated-TV-show on the Palladia Channel. The show, which Hall started back in 2007, has drawn critical acclaim for its eclectic mix of musical guests and genres; its unscripted, real-life moments; and its powerful, raw musical performances.

Taped at Hall’s house in rural upstate New York, the show has become a favorite among musicians and fans. There’s plenty of shop talk, working out riffs, and even a dinner break as guests hang out in the converted barn that hosts the sessions.

As Hall’s long-time engineer Peter Moshay explains, the show’s authenticity is part of the appeal – there’s nothing contrived about it. “This is really Daryl’shome,” he explains. “We come in and build the set for every show and tear it down afterward.”

Moshay mixes the show live on a PreSonus StudioLive™ 24.4.2 digital console. “Most of what I’m doing during the taping is dealing with monitor mixes,” he says. “Since the StudioLive gives me ten monitor sends, everybody gets their own monitor mix.”

As Moshay observes, the space is pretty cozy. “The room looks a lot bigger on TV than it really is,” he says. “It’s actually pretty cramped. There’s nowhere to really sit down, and once the room is filled with musicians and production people, there’s barely room to walk.”

The StudioLive is set up in an adjacent room but Moshay spends most of his time away from the desk. “I use StudioLive Remote for iPad® to get in position to hear everyone’s wedges.” Each musician also uses QMix™, enabling them to control their own mix. “It took about five minutes for the guys to figure out how to use it, and then everyone was like, ‘don’t ever change this!’ Once we started using the wireless control, there was just no way to ever go back.”

The musicians’ ability to control their monitors is great for the creative flow as well, Moshay explains. “They’re usually working out the arrangements on the fly, and being able to hear each other and communicate is huge. There’s no more shouting across the room.”

Audio is recorded live to multitrack, taking the output of the StudioLive into Alesis HD24XR hard-disk recorders. “It’s old technology but it’s what we started with five years ago,” Moshay explains. “There wasn’t room to set up a computer, and there still isn’t, so I export the tracks to a computer for editing.”

With no acoustic treatment to speak of, and a peaked ceiling that ranges from 15 to 21 feet high, there’s very little in the way of separation. “Everything in the room is wide open, and there’s no way to really duck any of the mics, because it changes the sound,” he explains. “So when I go to mix the recordings, there’s plenty of leakage across the tracks.”

And that, says Moshay, is a big part of the show’s appeal. “It’s kind of a musician’s show. A lot of musicians are familiar with the show’s sound. It sounds real, like you’re live in the room, and that’s what people like. So I do everything I can to tame the levels, but I keep all that leakage in the mix. I want people to feel like they are there in the room with us.”

The StudioLive’s Class A XMAX™ preamps are a solid part of that sound. “Because we have such a wide range of guests, every show is different,” says Moshay. “Some shows they’ll come out rocking pretty hard, other shows we’ll have lower dynamics and more ballads. The StudioLive’s sound is clean and uncolored. It can go from one extreme to the other, and it sounds great no matter what we’re doing with it.”

Prism Sound Launches Lyra – A New Audio Interface For The Studio Producer, Musician and DJ Market

Internationally renowned manufacturer Prism Sound is bringing its high performance audio technology to an even wider audience with the launch of Lyra, a brand new family of interfaces aimed at musicians, composers, project studio owners, DJs, re-mixers and other audio content producers such as radio and podcasting. It is also anticipated that high-end home audio enthusiasts will find the USB interface and stereo configuration with digital volume control an attractive package.

Lyra, which will make its debut at the 2012 AES Convention in San Francisco, is based on the award-winning and critically acclaimed Orpheus interface. With Lyra, music recording professionals can access the power and sophistication of the Orpheus audio path and clock circuitry, but in a smaller package and at a much improved price point.

“Lyra connects seamlessly with both Macs and PCs via a simple USB interface,” says Graham Boswell, Sales and Marketing Director for Prism Sound. “For recording professionals who don’t need eight channels of analogue I/O, Lyra is the perfect interface because it allows them to access Prism Sound quality in a convenient package and at an affordable price.”

Prism Sound, which plans to launch a number of different variants of Lyra, has started the ball rolling with Lyra 1 and Lyra 2. Both incorporate new ARM Cortex-based ‘Xcore’ processor design offering class-compliant USB interfacing, plus DSP and a low latency ‘console-quality’ digital mixer for foldback monitoring. Both products also have optical SPDIF capability and Lyra 2 also supports ADAT.

Lyra 1, which retails at £1,349 plus VAT, will be of particular interest to the musician and project studio market. This unit offers two analogue input channels – one for instrument/line and one for mic/line – plus two DA output channels and optical-only digital I/O. With Lyra 1, musicians can connect a guitar and a microphone through the input channels, plug into their software mixer via a simple USB connection and start laying down basic tracks in a matter of minutes.

Lyra 2, which retails at £1,849 plus VAT, takes the concept a little further by offering two AD input channels with switchable microphone, instrument or line input modes and four DA output channels. Both optical-only digital I/O and copper S/PDIF are available on this version of Lyra, which also offers wordclock In/Out enabling synchronization with other digital devices.

Both products are ergonomically designed to look as good as they sound. The front panel has a master volume control assignable to selected output channels, while the unit’s small size – just 11 inches wide – makes it very easy to transport for musicians, producers and DJs on the road. For studio use, Prism Sound can supply dedicated rack mounts as an extra.

“We know there is a market for Lyra because our customers have been demanding this product ever since we launched Orpheus,” Graham Boswell adds. “However, we are very protective of our reputation for delivering the highest possible audio quality so we were not going to bring any product to market until we were 100% convinced that it could live up to our exacting specifications. Lyra does just that, and we are very proud to introduce it.”

Lyra will start shipping in November 2012 and will be fully supported by Prism Sound’s acclaimed technical and after-sales service staff.
