Asian Million Star Uses The AKG DMS 700 To Shine Bright On Hong Kong TV

After five successful years in Taiwan, the singing extravaganza Asian Million Star premiered on Hong Kong with help from the highly versatile, frequency-agile AKG DMS 700 wireless microphone system. The wildly popular television show, which started months before the on-air premier with 5,000 aspiring singers, featured 25 contestants competing over the course of 13 episodes, with a panel of judges selecting the best vocal performers to move on to the finale.

Judges for the show included an array of respected audio and musical professionals ranging from creative composers to studio producers. With some of the most finely tuned ears in the business deciding the fate of each performer, the AKG DMS 700 system matched musical talent with sonic integrity. Not only does the clean digital audio transmission eliminate the distortion and significant noise levels that accompany other analogue systems, but it also offers 155MHz of bandwidth, which provides a more

Randy Meullier Turns To Soundcraft Vi6 For Alice Cooper “Theatre Of Deathâ€? Tour

SSE Audio provides Soundcraft platform for rock legend’s European leg.

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — When Alice Cooper embarked on his current UK and European Theatre of Death tour, his long-serving sound engineer Randy Meullier was finally able to bag his first choice digital console — the Soundcraft Vi6™.

And he says he largely has Pete Russell at the SSE Audio Group to thank. Taking over the European sound production duties from Phoenix-based Precise Corporate Staging (PCS), by the time Russell suggested that Meullier try the Soundcraft platform (with the Vistonics™ II interface), the sound man — who has been piloting the legendary rocker’s front-of-house mixes for the past seven years — had already served his baptism on the Vi6 in Norway and Cyprus.

“Earlier in this tour I did a fly-in show at the Skaanevik Festival in Norway and it was a joy to use the more

MULTI-FACETED AUDIO ENGINEER MICHAEL ROMANOWSKI USES METRIC HALO’S ULN-8 FOR MASTERING, MIXING AND RECORDING

romanowski.JPG

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: When audio engineer Michael Romanowski describes the Metric Halo Mobile I/O ULN-8 interface as the “do-everything” box, he isn’t exaggerating. In fact, the ULN-8 interface is so versatile that it has become an essential component in Romanowski’s workflow, whether he is recording on location or in the studio, mixing at home, or working in his mastering facility.

“I have two that I use at the studio, and then I have several that I use for location recording,” explains Romanowski, who was recently appointed as the Chairman of the P&E Wing of the San Francisco Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. Examples of Romanowski’s location recording projects range from Americana musician Todd Snider to the American Bach Soloists, with a wide variety of rock, jazz, pop and blues performers in between.

ASHLY BRINGS SIMPLICITY AND FUNCTIONALITY TO BECKER COLLEGE GYMNASIUM SOUND SYSTEM

becker1.JPG

LEICESTER, MASSACHUSETTS: The Leicester campus of Massachusetts’ multi-campus Becker College is the 19th oldest campus in the United States. Indeed, the great John Hancock put his John Hancock… er, signature… on its charter in 1784. Now a prestigious private school, Becker’s 1,700 students uphold its strong academic tradition, and recent years have witnessed tremendous growth in the school’s athletic program. As such, the lone 37 year-old speaker cabinet, in the equally-old Leicester Campus Gymnasium, was proving more and more inadequate, and the school was forced to rent a better system for most events. When administrators approved a modest budget for a new system, the multimedia crew and athletic directors were overjoyed to receive a fabulous sounding and remarkably easy to control system, the logic, processing, and interface of which is provided by an Ashly ne24.24M matrix processor with intuitive Ashly remote control units.

MORE HD SURROUND SOUND FROM SKY WITH SOUNDFIELD’S UPM-1 • Satellite Broadcaster Buys Eight SoundField Stereo-to-5.1 Upmix Processors

keith_lane.JPGLAS VEGAS, NEVADA: European satellite broadcaster BSkyB, better known as Sky, has purchased eight of SoundField’s stereo-to-5.1 upmix processors for live use in their studios and outside broadcast facilities. The SoundField UPM-1 is a 1U, 19-inch rack processor which can create a convincing, phase-coherent 5.1 surround panorama from stereo audio in real-time, without adding any reverb or unwanted additional phase shifts. It does this by adaptively analyzing the two-channel stereo material, separating the content into its ambient and direct components, and placing any material from the center of the original stereo mix, such as commentary or dialogue, into the center channel of the resulting 5.1 panorama. For HD broadcasters, the UPM-1 ensures that most audio can be broadcast in fold-down friendly surround sound, without obvious moments when the broadcast soundscape narrows to stereo during the transmission of older, stereo-only material.

Remote Recording uses Fairlight’s New Xynergi to Record and Edit the 2009 Latin Grammys

xynergi-workstation-w_sidecarsmall.jpg

Karen Brinton, President of Remote Recording, and her audio recording team chose Fairlight’s Xynergi to record the 2009 Latin Grammys, which took place in Las Vegas in November at Mandalay Bay.

Peter Gary, Engineer in Charge, became interested in the Xynergi after he was introduced to the system by New York-based Dale Pro Audio, which is Fairight’s exclusive dealer for northeast USA.

Gary explains: “The flexibility of the Xynergi system is really incredible. We were able to record 128 channels along with HD/SDI video for hours on end with absolutely no issues. While in record, the system was also able to backup the previous sound check (all 128 tracks plus video) onto an external hard drive. This negates any transfer time after the show, saving the clients money and having the media ready to post on any DAW system immediately.â€?

DANLEY STEPS UP TO THE PLATE AT TURNER FIELD

turner_field.JPG

ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Poised for a future playoff berth with a hopeful mixture of youth and experience, the Atlanta Braves finished the 2009 season with a respectable record and much to look forward to. But for Turner Field, built originally for the 1996 Olympics and the club’s home ever since, 2009 marked the transition from possession of a dated sound system to possession of arguably the best system in major league baseball. Assailed by the elements, the old loudspeakers were showing signs of age, replaced by over four-hundred Danley loudspeakers with full weatherproofing, as well as customized rigging and coverage patterns to fit perfectly in the old speakers’ places. Not only did Danley deliver extensive customization, it did so within an extremely short timeframe.

The original equipment had been in place for thirteen years and the loudspeakers were beginning to deteriorate. The Braves more
